I run away from my parent's room and up to mine. This is freaky. First the thing at school, now mom sobbing? Mom Is never sad. Not even with Jakob when he ignores her. I don't care what my brother thinks or does, I am getting to the bottom of this. I go to Jakob's door and pound on it. He opens it with a pissed look on his face.
"The hell you want?" he snarls at me. I was starting to get used to his man period mood swings.
"Mom wouldn't like it if she heard you," I scold him. He roles his eyes.
"Like I care. Mom can go..." then he stopped his sentence when I cut him off with a glare. "Bake cookies. Was totally telling mom to bake us cookies." he quickly covers up. I arch my eyebrow.
"Whatever. Anyway, we need to find out what the hell is happening. You don't have to help, but I am pleading with you that you will help." I tell him. He stares at me for a moment. Then he squints his eyes at me.
"You have no proof anything is going on." he retorts. I raise a brow. He was being a donkey butt. This was ridiculous, and if I didn't need him dearly, I wouldn't be putting up with him.
"Want proof? Two words: Mom's crying." I say. His eyes widen and he jumps out the door.
"I'm in!" he shouts. "Let me get my coat," he says. I smirk, that was easier than I thought.
He comes back later with his coat on. I point to him to go up the stairs. We needed to get mom and dad out of the house. I thought of something that might get them out.
"Hide in the closet," I say and push him in. He lets out a grunt and I smirk.
"MOM! DAD!" I yell.
I hear footsteps coming down the stairs frantically. What was their problem these days? Mom and dad stand panting at the bottem of the stairs with things behind their backs. Then they look around and the things seem to disappear.
"What is it?" dad asks in a panic.
"Jakob's parent teacher conference is tonight." I say.
A blank look crosses dad's face then he sides a glance at mom.
"I don't think so, they would have told me, right?" dad asks, then gets a worried look on his face. THink, Jessie, think!
"THe teacher wanted me to tell you he wanted a private conversation with you." I add. Mom looks to dad, then grabs her purse.
"Let's go, heaven knows Jake won't tell us he has problems in class," mom says, " what teacher is it, sweetie?" she asks. I put on a thinking face. WHat teacher would take most time to talk?
"I forgot. Just ask the office or something," I suggest. Mom nods and holds her hand out for dad.
"Beatrice!" dad shouts, waiting for my little sister to come. Beatrice comes bopping up the stairs.
Beatrice always confused me, more so than my parents did. For one, she didn't act like a six year old. I mean, she had no friends from school, she didn't talk to anyone, and she didn't even talk like one. SHE was smarter than a lot of people I know, even me. It was like she was a hundred years old or something. Three, I never saw her. She was always hiding somewhere in the house. Four, mom and dad never worried about her, it was like they knew she could take care of herself. I was surprised they eve thought to take her. And it wasn't like they were neglectful parents, they were really protective, and still are, over Jake and I. Weirder yet, I think she knew mom and dad's secret.
"Coming, daddy." she says and hops into his arms. Then they go out the door and are gone.
I turn around and open the door to the closet. Jake comes pouring out.
"Ouch." he says. I laugh.
"Come on, let's go!" I grab his arm and loop it around mine. His eyes light up a fraction when he realizes what I'm doing.
"WERE OFF TO FIND THE ANSWERS, THE WONDERFUL ANSWERS OF OZ!" I shout. He smiles.
"You'll find that theirs and answer for every question there is. If ever a question was!" he continues smiling.
When we were little, and he actually liked me, we did this all the time. Except the lyrics were different all the time because we mixed them up to match up with the situation.
"IF EVER OH EVER CURIOSITY WAS!"
"THERE IS A QUESTION OF OZ IS ONE BECAUSE"
"BECAUSE BECAUSE BECAUSE BECAUSE BECAUSE!"
"OF THE WONDERFUL THING CURIOUSITY DOES!"
"WE'RE OFF TO FIND THE ANSWERS, THE WONDERFUL ANSWERS OF OZ!"
We both laugh like idiots. I was kind of glad deep down that this was going on. My brother and I uniting as one to find out the truth was bringing us closer together again, and I remember why he used to be my best friend.
