JESSALYN

Mom and dad come into the room with nasty looks on their faces. I sit there while not looking at them, I never got in trouble. It was hard now to see them looking at me in so much disapproval.

"Lie to us, the nerve. I thought I raised you kids better. I expected this out of Jake, but you, Jessalyn? I couldn't be more ashamed." she carries on with dad adding a word or nod every now and then. "Why did you need us out of the house so bad that you had to lie?" she snaps. I look to Jake, but he's not much help.

"We were making a surprise for you, but you came home so fast we didn't get it done." Jake lies easily. I look at him in bewilderment, but bring back composure on my face before mom and dad get even more suspicious. Mom stares intently at Jake for a while before she breaks down.

"Alright, but next time just ask us so I don't bump into Mrs. Burgess with no reason." mom says, then she says under her breathe something along the lines of 'the nerve of some people.' Dad coughs to hide a little laughter. I smile and hug mom before she lets us go.

"Can I go on a walk?" I ask. She sits there for a second before smiling.

"Sure, honey. Be home before dinner!" she says. i smile and go out the door while hanging on to Jake. We hurry and run before mom and dad can change their minds and run until we hit Acorn Road. There, we start panting and Jake hangs onto the sign for support.

"Want to tell me why the hell we ran like three blocks?" he asks.

"We have to go to that lake dufus. Seriously, how did you pass the eighth grade?" I ask, then he sticks out his tongue at me. I mock hurt before we both laugh it off.

"What do you expect to find at the lake? A body? Which, by the way, is totally gross and senile." he starts then trails off.

"Enough! The dude in the picture looked familiar, maybe the statue will help me remember WHO it looks like." I explain to him in a voice you would use on babies. He scoffs and turns around and starts walking to the lake without me. I run up to him and bump his shoulder.

"He looked familiar to me to, I just don't get why." he whispers to me. Maybe we will find out soon. Well, I hope." I try to reassure him. That's when we stop and look up. There was a gate with barbed wire, we were at the lake.

"You know, I don't think we've been here since the drowning incident. And before that, we never came as much as other people." Jake starts.

"Remember when we asked mom and she said no over and over again." i add. A small smile graces his face.

"Yeah, then, when she finally agreed, we had to keep quiet and sneak out of the house?" he continues. I laugh.

"And then... then dad started freaking out when we got back?" I finish, start to go into an awkward silence. WE just stood there looking at the fence when Jake ran over to it.

"What do you think your doing?" I ask. He grunts and tosses a leg under and over the barbed wire.

"Getting... over... this fence." he says. He starts to jump off when he gets to the other side when his leg catches in the chain. I stifle a giggle, and unable to control myself, start laughing.

Jake looks at me annoyed. He grabs his leg and tries to hoist himself back up. He uses his other hand to grab onto the chain. He starts to get back up when he falls. His head bumps the fence again and a loud ow escapes his mouth. I sigh and start to climb up to. once I am over the fence, i grab his leg and untwist it from the chain-link fence and unhook him. he quickly falls to the ground and he growns.

"Well, here we are." I say.

The pond was huge. Frost patterns covered the top of the ice in beautiful patterns. The pond was frozen over. But, during winter, it usually was. The ice seemed really thick, too thick.

"Now what?" Jake asks.

That's a very good question, actually. But I didn't know. It would be easier if I knew exactly what we needed to find.

I turn to the left to see the statues the city had recently placed to honor the two boys. I walk up to them. They seemed to be made of bronze. One of them was Steve Wilson. I barely knew him, he never talked to anyone at school.

I turn to the other one. The unknown boy. He looked about my age. In the picture of him, which was a painted portrait, he had brown hair. I try to imagine the boy with it, but I can't. HE looked so familiar, but I couldn't figure out why.

"Does he seem familiar to you, too?" I ask Jake. He walks up beside me and takes a moment to look the statue over.

"He does, but I can't pinpoint it." he replies.\

Suddenly, a crack fills the air. I turn around to see the silhouette of a huge animal; maybe a bunny?

"What was that?" Jake asks as it runs away. I shake my head.

"No idea. Come on!" I say and start running towards the rabbit thingy.

"Jessie, wait! NO!" Jake shouts. I turn around to see him with fear in his eyes. Before I could ask what was wrong, another crack filled the air. this time it wasn't in the woods. I look down to see a crack forming in the ice.

When did I run out to the ice? I try to move, but I frozen out of shock. Jake runs to me and I reach for him. Just as he goes to grab me, I fall through.

Don't kill me!
