A/N Here's the next chapter! Sorry it took so long!
Damian slept the whole car ride to Jack's house, while the two older men sat in an uncomfortable silence. He liked Jack, and he'd been nice enough to invite them over, but a small seed of anxiety had planted itself in Jason's stomach, and part of him regretted taking Jack's offer. He seemed like a nice enough guy, dangerously attractive, and obviously kind, but Jason couldn't help feel stupid for getting in a car with a complete stranger, while Damian was unable to really do anything.
On the upside, for the first time since Damian had come back, Jason felt completely normal. He was just a man riding in a car, a child in the back seat, fresh air blowing through the passenger window. It was relaxing, it was calming, it was beautiful. They drove for about forty minutes until Jack pulled into a small driveway attached to a townhouse, a small garden withering in front.
"Well,", Jack smiled, "Home sweet home."
He parked and turned off the car before unlocking the doors. Jason got out and immediately reached for the back door to carry Damian out.
"He can sleep in my bed,", Jack offered.
"Thanks,", Jason smiled
He followed Jack to the door, and waited for him to unlock the door before walking through the threshold, but to Jason's alarm, he just pushed the door open and walked through.
"Don't worry. Nobody locks their doors here.", he laughed, answering Jason's unasked question.
The house was small, quaint, with earthy tones and furniture too old for the twenty something homeowner. Jason didn't question it though as he followed Jack to his bedroom to set Damian down.
He tucked the sleeping child into the bed, and ran his fingers through Damian's hair before following Jack back out the room and into the living room where they sat on an old sofa.
"So,", Jack smiled, "What's your story?"
A wave of panic washed over Jason, and it took him but a second to whip up something and serve it up.
"Well, it's just my brother and I,", he started, "It didn't used to be, it used to be just me, but then he got sick, and well, my family would never understand, so we left. I want to give him a fresh start, a good life."
It was all true, he just happened to leave out the part where his brother had been dead for a year and four months, and that his family protected Gotham, and that he himself had been brought back from the dead. Other than that, it passed with Jack because he smiled softly.
"That's really amazing of you, Dylan. Giving everything up to take care of your brother."
"No,", Jason shook his head, "I'm not giving anything up. I had no idea what I was doing with my life, or which direction my life was going in until him. Now I know what I have to do, and it feels right, it feels great."
Jack just smiled, "That's incredibly noble of you,"
Jason shrugged humbly, but before he could continue the disposable cellphone he'd bought on arrival began to vibrate in his pocket. Jason frowned. The only one that had his phone number was the hotel receptionist.
"Excuse me,", he smiled curtly, and answered the phone.
"Hello, Mr. Weeks, it's Jessica Hoult with 8 Motel", the receptionist spoke sweetly, "Somebody by the name of Amy Beddoes called our front desk asking if you were staying here. She didn't leave a message, and told me not to inform you, however it's our policy, so-"
She didn't have time to finish before Jason hung up on her. Jason knew very well who Amy Beddoes was, and if Oracle thought he wouldn't then she was dumber than she thought. They'd found him and Damian.
He knew for sure that Orcale knew, and if she knew there was no telling who else knew. He could feel the blood draining from his face, and the tips of his fingers went numb. Where were they going to go? If she knew they were in Saskatchewan, then all she needed to do was catch them on surveillance, and she'd find them. She could track them anywhere.
He had to think quick and move fast, but carefully.
"Dylan?", Jack called out for the fourth time, "Dylan what's wrong is everything okay?"
"I'm sorry,", Jason announced, standing up, "But I'm gonna need your car, some cash, and a razor."
"Damnit,", Oracle cursed, slamming her gloved hands down on the keyboard. She took a deep breath, and exhaled it slowly before furiously typing. A low ring rang out and it took just a second before there was a click.
"Oracle?", Nightwing's voice came through her surrounding speakers.
"I found them."
There was a sharp intake of breath from Dick's end.
"You did? You saw them?"
"No,", she sighed, "But I called almost every hotel, motel and hospital moving down from Vancouver, and got confirmation from a receptionist at a 'Motel 8' in Regina, Saskatchewan. I gave her an alias, but there's no doubt that Jason knows we're on his trail, and he'll be on the move, so we have to move quicker. I'm going to be stalking surveillance at the motel, but I can't be sure I'm going to get them, especially if Jason knows. So you need to get there now, right now."
There was silence from Dick's end, and finally : "Okay..Okay, you need to tell Bruce something, anything, and I'll get the jet and go. Keep me posted on everything, anything."
She nodded, her eyes scanning the screens in front of her.
"I will. Oracle out."
He was confused, obviously, but he did what Jason said with little to no questions. He'd given Jason fifty bucks, which is all he had on him, he gave him the keys to his car, and watched as Jason shaved his head with the razor he'd requested.
Without asking, Jason made his way into Jack's room, and began to rummage through his drawers until he found what he was looking for. A pair of khakis and a light blue plaid shirt. He changed quickly, and immediatley he wanted to crawl out of his skin. When he was dressed, he scooped Damian up and made his way towards the front door.
"If I'm not completely mistaken, I think I've been robbed,", Jack said with a nervous laugh.
"It's nothing personal,", Jason spoke, his voice serious, "You've been great, thank you for everything, and I swear, one day I'll repay you,"
Jack just shrugged, "It's nothing. It seems serious, so I just hope that you two are okay,"
Jason nodded sternly and Jack stood by the door, watching Jason tuck Damian neatly in the car and peeled out of the driveway.
When Jack was sure that they were gone, he retreated back into the house and pulled out his cellphone. He dialed a single number and waited for less than thirty seconds for the other line to pick up.
"They just left,", he spoke, his kind Canadian accent replaced by harsh Arabic, "Batman is on their trail...yes, I can confirm, Damian Wayne is alive."
A/N I'm so happy with how this is progressing! I can only hope you are as well! Kudos to 2lazy2login for figuring me out haha hope I wasn't too obvious. Please read and review! Keep an eye out for much more!
