Chapter 8: Valkyrie
23rd Floor, January 20, 2023. 10:24 PM
"D-Damn it!"
Toru Takeda, a.k.a "Bandit", was in a dire situation. This solo player had farmed by himself in the forests near town when things began go horribly wrong.
Due to his overconfidence, the brown-haired Level 29 player decided to go deeper into the woods, where the stronger, more aggressive mobs were spawning. The lad was quickly overwhelmed by several [Feral Apes], five-foot ten over-muscular primates that frequented the area.
"Graah!" he growled as he swung his [Pirate's Cutlass] again and again, felling an ape with every swing. However, two seemed to sprout to replace the ones he had killed. To make matters worse, he could see that his weapon's durability was whittling down gradually. This continued until his sword arm felt like lead. Unable to swing any more, he panted heavily as the repeated alarm that told him that his health was on the red pinged in his ear.
"Haah...haah..." he panted as he examined his surroundings. There were at least five more of those monsters and they began to encircle him with every intent of killing him then and there.
"Well, this sucks." He sighed, smiling despite the situation as he braced himself for the inevitable. He figured that if he was going to die in this god-forsaken game, he was going to do so screaming and kicking
"Come on, you bastards." He gritted his teeth, standing defiant to the end "COME ON!"
He waited for the killing blow, but alas, it never came. He cautiously opened his eyes to the [Feral Apes'] expression were one of shock before, one by one, they shattered into fragmented polygons.
"Thank goodness I arrived on time. Are you alright?"
Bandit turned to see, without any doubt in his mind, one of the more beautiful sights in his entire life; appearing before him was a girl bathed in the moonlight. Her attire consisted of a winged helmet with a visor that covered the top part of her head, though it didn't hide those sapphire blue eyes or her long golden locks, white plate armor that covered her ample chest, silver gauntlets that covered her forearms, a blue mini-skirt with a gold trim that reached until above her knees and greaves that hugged her slender legs. In her arms was a spear with a blue shaft, the way she held the weapon suggests that she knew how to use it.
What captivated him the most was that serene smile she directed at him.
"Um, are you alright, sir?"
Bandit was quick to recover his senses, not wanting to look bad in front of this girl who may have saved his life. "Y-yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for saving me-"
His eyes widened, realizing who this girl was after hearing so many stories about her. Of course, he simply dismissed them as folk tales, so he was understandably floored.
"W-wait a minute! I know you! You're-"
"I see my reputation precedes me." His savior giggled as she slung the spear on her back "But it's not safe to talk here. I'll escort you until we get to town, alright?"
Without waiting for his response, the mysterious girl took Bandit's hand, causing him to blush profusely. Mere seconds after she took out her crystal, they found themselves back in the town of Romilde.
"Uhm..." The man said to the girl as he scratched the back of his head bashfully "Thanks again, miss...?"
"You can call me Brunhilde." The girl smiled as she opened her menu "And may I have your name, sir?"
"It's Bandit, ma'am."
"Very well." She giggled as she navigated through her menu "Listen, if you ever need my help..."
At that moment, Bandit's notification alarm went off. He took a look at it to see a friend request from the very person standing before him. He turned his attention to the girl, whose smile never diminished as she finished her sentence.
"Just let me know, okay?"
"...Sure."
Unable to keep himself from smiling, Bandit chuckled as he took the time to accept her friend request. The moment he turned his attention back to Brunhilde, she was already gone.
"Hm." He sighed in dismay. He wanted to thank her properly, but wasn't given the chance to do so. Still, he smiled as he decided to look for the nearest inn, grateful to be alive.
After all, it's not every day you get saved by SAO's infamous "Valkyrie".
8:30 AM, The next morning...
"Have you heard? The Valkyrie appeared again last night!"
"For real? Where?"
"She saved a player who wandered into the forest last night, if what I've heard is correct."
"Just how strong do you think she is?"
"Do you think she's a Clearer too?"
The inn was abuzz with chatter over the latest appearance of a player shrouded in mystery. From where they were sitting, Mio and Asuna were listening to all the hubub while Ritsu a.k.a Taiga was reading the latest edition of "The Daily Argo" with Yui looking over her shoulder.
"Wow, this Valkyrie's really something, huh? Taiga mused as she looked over the article "Take a look at this; this month alone, she's appeared at five different times, each time to save a player from dying from aggressive mobs."
"Sugoi..." Yui said in awestruck wonder while reading over her shoulder.
"What else does it say about her?" asked Mio as she went behind Taiga, her curiosity piqued as well.
"Hmm..." The de facto "leader" of their troupe glossed over the article again "Not much, except that she's a solo player, a lancer and has a tendecy to disappear just as quickly as she comes."
"To be honest, that sounds like someone we all know." Asuna finally spoke, obviously thinking about a certain Black Swordsman. Mio and Taiga found themselves nodding in agreement.
"Well, I think she's cool!"
"Hm?" The other three turned to face Yui as she made that outburst "What makes you say that?" Asuna asked for them.
"Well..." The peppy brunette scrunched her brows in thought, placing a hand on her chin "It's like you said, Asu-chan; she acts like Kuro-Senpai would if someone in front of him needed help!"
The three other girls could not help but chuckle at the brunette's simple-mindedness. In Mio and Taiga's case, Yui's unbridled enthusiasm and child-like naivety reminded them of what awaited them when they got back, while it was different from Asuna; for the rapier wielder, it gave her a faint glint of hope.
Mio was about to speak more about the matter when she received a notification in her inbox. Upon opening it, she saw that it was from Klein.
"What's all this about?" The bassist asked herself as she began reading the message, wondering what the man had in mind.
Ormeon Plains, 12 NN.
"Hyaah!"
A flash of light pierced the chest of a [Highland Panther], an aggressive spawn that frequented the plains found southeast of the floor's Labyrinth. Seconds later, the creature imploded into several fractals before dissipating entirely. Two more attempted to jump on her all at once, but were cleaved in half with one clean sweep of her spear before they could reach her.
The mighty Valkyrie had decided to farm some levels and col at that particular time. As a result, she found herself in a fierce battle with several Highland Panthers under the scorching sun in these plains.
But she wasn't quite done yet, as another threatened to flank her from the side, pouncing when she thought was vulnerable. However, Brunhilde was ready for it, thrusting her spear upward to meet the attacker head on. As a result, her weapon gashed the monster on the side and caused to crash into the ground. Sensing this as her moment of opportunity, the blonde lancer yelled out a battle cry as she leaped onto her downed opponent and thrust her spear down for the finishing blow.
As the the fallen foe shattered into millions of polygons, she pulled the spear from the ground and was about to go her own way when-
"Look out!"
Reacting to the voice, Brunhilde quickly whipped around, her flowing locks following her, as a [Highland Panther] she left unattended attempted to pounce at her from behind. Before she could raise her spear in defense, a flash of light bisected the beast from the waist down, killing it instantly.
"Well, this is a surprise."
The voice that warned her came from the figure who, with sword drawn, cut down the last mob with little effort. To say that he was in all black would be an understatement; his coat, his hair and the hand guard of the sword he held in his right was as dark as midnight. To her surprise, he approached the blonde with an almost carefree smile.
"I'd have expected Valkyrie-san to be a little more aware of her surroundings." he chuckled as he stopped in front of her. Brunhilde did not question how he knew who she was. Her reputation had already grown due to her actions as of late. In fact, considering that she has heard of who HE was, she wouldn't have been surprised in the slightest.
"And it's not everyday that the infamous 'Beater-san' would come to my rescue." Brunhilde giggled as she gave Kirito a polite bow.
"You know who I am?"
"Who hasn't heard of the 1st Floor Boss Battle?" Brunhilde giggled in response to Kirito's surprised expression "I, for one, think that you're a real hero for doing what you did. Kirito-san."
"I-Is that so?" Kirito found himself getting disarmed by the Valkyrie's warm smile "Um...thanks. Though you're not exactly under the radar yourself, Valkyrie-san."
"Please, call me Brunhilde, and without honorifics if you can." The blonde giggled, her eyes twinkling with mirth under her visor "And yes, I'm well aware of the buzz I've generated over the past month. It's quite flattering actually!"
Kirito could only smile at what he was seeing. He had expected the Valkyrie to be an intimidating, no-nonsense warrior maiden kind of girl.
"Much like Asuna, anyway." he mentally noted.
Still, he was pleasantly surprised to see that the girl before him was really down to earth and nothing like he thought her to be.
"Anyway," she hefted her spear over her shoulder casually "I believe we should stop for a rest first. Then," She proceeded to open her menu and promptly sent the Black Swordsman a party invite "Perhaps you can go with me on a quest a few paces east from here? I'd like to see how Kirito-san fares in battle with my own eyes."
Normally, he would politely decline, but for some reason Kirito couldn't find it in his heart to refuse such a good-natured girl "I guess it's okay." he said with a smile as he accepted the request.
"Okay then!" Brunhilde giggled as she took a quick look into her inventory. Seconds later, she pulled out a blanket and spread it out on the flat ground "If we leave after lunch, we should probably be there by four o'clock." At that moment, she began pulling out two teacups and a pot of warm tea. She poured some on a cup, then offered it to the beleaguered Black Swordsman with a winning smile.
"In the mean time, would you like some tea?"
"Are you sure it's here, Yui?"
"Argo-chan said it would be!"
"Are you sure that Rat could be reliable?"
"She's never held out on us before." Mio reasoned as she and her friends, joined by Klein of the Fuurinkazan, a growing guild, waded through the marshes south of the Ormeon Plains, where the grass was tall and the murky waters were plentiful. The reason for their being there was information (courtesy of Argo) that there was quest that involved finding a blue gemstone in the heart of this swamp and bring it to [Roland], the NPC Blacksmith in town that starts the quest. Klein had wanted to bring his guild members as well, but they politely declined.
"After all, we'll just get the way of you and Mio-san, right?"
"Tch, I hate you guys." The scruffy katana wielder thought as he drew his katana [Ichimonji] and began cutting a swathe through the tall brushes "Still..."
He glanced behind him shortly to check on the others; he saw Mio leading the pack, the [Battle Maiden's Chestplate] a sleeveless blue top with silver armor covering her ample chest. Her [Battle Maiden's Gauntlets] covered just until her forearms, leaving the rest to bare. Lastly, her long and flowing [Battle Maiden's Skirt] was a rich dark blue, reaching right up to her knees, her feet covered by [Boots of the Wanderer]. Seeing as she had three of the same set, it gave her some bonuses in STR, DEX and VIT.
Needless to say, Klein found her current look quite captivating. Mio began to notice him staring and, in typical fashion began to grow self-conscious.
"Um, w-what is it, Klein-san?" she said as her cheeks grew red "I-is there something on my face?"
"N-nothing!" Klein immediately looked away out of embarrassment, the shade of his entire face matching her as well while he scratched his head nervously"A-Anyway, congratulations on getting the last hit bonus back at the last floor boss."
"O-oh, uhm. Thanks." Mio's flustered state of mind diminished as her lips curled into a warm smile "I don't want to take too much credit. After all, you and the rest of Fuurinkazan created the opening..."
"Oh...what are you two being buddy-buddy for?" Taiga's lips curled into a teasing smirk as she began nudging her elbow into her best friend's rib "Is our 'Dangerous Queen' feeling a little shy? It's obvious that you two-"
Poor Taiga wasn't able to finish her thought, as she found herself being throttled by the blackette swordsman. To Mio's dismay, she had become rather infamous among the Clearers as "The Dangerous Queen". Needless to say, that monikker did well to press her buttons every time Taiga mentioned it "My health, my health-!" the drummer frantically flailed her arms while Mio kept her grip tight. While Klein and Asuna sweatdropped from the savage display, Yui just took it all in stride and laughed.
"This feels like old times, doesn't it?" the peppy swordswoman giggled "All that's missing are tea and sweets from-"
Instantly, the horsing around stopped. Yui, Mio and Taiga looked down sadly, as all they were missing was one person.
Tsumugi "Mugi" Kotobuki.
Sensing their unrest, Asuna placed a comforting hand on Yui's shoulder "You haven't found her yet, huh?"
"Nope." the other girl sighed sadly "We looked around the floors and asked other people, but we haven't found any sign of her yet."
"Do you think there's a possibility that she didn't enter the game at all?" Klein spoke up, hoping to offer a small measure of comfort.
"I'm actually hoping so." Taiga spoke with concern in her tone "She wouldn't have to experience this death game if she didn't. But..."
"Mugi was the one who invited us to play this game." Mio explained for them "As such, it wouldn't make sense for her not to log-in. If only we knew her IGN..."
"We're really worried about her." Yui's expressions did nothing to hide her concern for the blonde pianist "I really hope she's okay..."
"I think she'll be fine." Asuna smiled warmly as she patted the brunette's head "After all, you three turned out okay, right?"
"I guess so..." the brunette's tone, however, didn't seem all that sure.
"We can always help you find her."
All four girls, Mio in particular, turned to Klein, who was scratching his bearded chin, look away shyly "If your friend's here, then I'm sure it'll be a matter of time before we'll find her. If you don't mind me helping, that is..."
"Actually, I don't mind at all." The raven-haired bassist's gloominess disappeared and was replaced by a warm sense of hope. Her expression changed into a small smile as she went forward and patted the man's arm "Thanks, Klein."
Unable to say anything, the scruffy man could only watch as Mio walked ahead to scout the area. He looked behind to see the others smiling as well, the chuckled to himself as he went to catch up with the "Dangerous Queen."
"Anytime, Mio. Anytime."
It took them two hours, but they finally found the said gemstone, which was situated atop a pile of grass located at the center of a shallow grove.
"There it is!" Yui grinned excitedly as she sprinted for the item, her long brown coat trailing after her like a blur.
"Hey!" Taiga called out as she followed her, though she didn't move as fast due to her low AGI and heavy full plate armor.
"Wait, you guys-!" Mio called out to them, but it was too late as they ran ahead too far to hear her. Finding that she was unable to stop them, she could only facepalm "...Idiots."
"It'll be fine." Asuna giggled as she stopped beside the other girl, clad in a red long vest that covered a white shirt and red leggings.
"Isn't it strange though?" Mio turned to see that Klein had a rather thoughtful look "Didn't Argo's info mention a special mob that spawns in this quest?"
"Now that you mentioned it, yes." The rapier wielder responded "There's supposed to be a boss-type mob that spawns here the moment we get near the gem, but..."
"It hasn't shown up yet." The blackette murmured in response while scanning her surroundings, looking for any sign of the said mob. Asuna and Klein saw this and began doing the same, observing their surroundings until...
"There!"
The strawberry blonde swordswoman pointed to a subtle movement at the other end of the pond, the murky water doing little to hide it's size.
"What the hell?!" Klein cursed aloud as he watched the underwater beast suddenly propel itself, it's massive bulk ripping the water in half.
"Where's it- Oh no." Asuna's question was immediately answered, as the mob was rushing towards Taiga and Yui, who were just about to approach the gem.
"YUI! TAIGA! WATCH OUT!"
"Eh?"
Both turned back to acknowledge Mio's frantic scream when, in a powerful gush of water, a massive crocodilian monster appeared right in front of them. It was a muscular specimen, as it's moss green scaly body looked as if it was sculpted from marble. It's giant maw had several razor sharp teeth, and it's blood-red eyes glowed menacingly as it stared at the party. It wrists were wrapped in bandages and wore dull brown leggings, wielding a stone axe in each hand. As it stood to full height, Three life bars appeared and it's display name showed up, revealing it as [Krogor, The Swamp Lord].
"W-w-what is that?!" Taiga stammered as she and Yui began to back away, both too terrified to move.
"Asuna!" Mio shouted as she drew her weapon, a katana much like Klein's. The rapier wielder nodded as she began running, counting on her superior AGI stat to reach them on time. Soon enough, Mio went on the pursuit as well.
"STUPID HUMAN! YOU DARE STEAL WHAT IS KROGOR'S?!"
Unfortunately, it looked as if they wouldn't reach them on time, as the titantic reptile raised an axe. Taiga and Yui raised hammer and sword respectively, hoping to at least sponge up most of the damage.
Luckily, neither of them had to. Even before Mio urged Asuna to move in, Klein had already rushed to their aid, his katana swinging upward to collide with [Krogor's] axe with a mighty roar.
"No way in hell..." he gritted his teeth as he exerted effort in holding the weapon at bay "ARE YOU GONNA BEAT ME!"
With one mighty push, he deflected the axe and pushed it to the side, creating an opening for the other girl's to exploit. No sooner had he shouted "SWITCH!", Asuna rammed her rapier into it's gut with a swift and brutal [Linear], causing the reptilian creature to skid onto the ground.
"Are you alright, Klein-kun?" Yui's squeaky voice chimed in worry.
"I'll live." Klein answered back while glancing at his health bar. While that deadlock chipped a good amount of his health, he had more than enough to keep on going "Are you two alright?"
"We're fine." Taiga's lips curled into a grin as she brought out her massive [Bone Breaker], a two handed mace with massive spikes protruding from it's club, to bear "Thanks, Klein. You saved our bacon there- Ow!"
Both her and Yui got bopped on the head by Mio and Asuna respectively, both having stern expressions on their faces. "That's for forgetting that there was a boss here!"
"W-we're sorry!" both genki girls apologized sheepishly.
"Look sharp, girls, he's coming back!"
All four girls whipped to see that [Krogor] was at his feet and let out a bestial roar before stomping towards his quarry.
"You're not surprising me this time!" roared Taiga as she met the sub-boss head-on. Bringing up her giant mace in defense, she braced herself and as the boss went into a frenzy, wildly swinging his axes in an attempt to pummel the brunette. Despite this, she held her ground despite her hp whittling little by little with every strike.
"C'mon, you overgrown purse!" she growled ferociously "GIVE ME ALL YOU GOT!"
"Sugoi!" Yui said in wonder, and Mio had to agree; out of all of them, Taiga had the highest STR and VIT stats, making her the ideal tank for their party. Even now, she could only stare in awe as her best friend took hit after hit and kept standing.
"Now's not the time!" The blackette said to shake Yui and herself out of their reverie "We have to back her up!"
With a nod, bot Yui and Asuna darted for the sides and flanked the giant gator while Taiga kept it busy from the front. Being the two swiftest members present, both were able to land solid hits with sword and rapier respectively and darted away before [Krogor] could react.
"Nice one, you two!" Mio called out just as Taiga deflected both axes and left an opening that Mio exploited.
"Yaaaaah!" the blackette shouted, swinging her katana upward with both hands in a diagonal arc that caused the boss to howl in pain.
"YOU'LL PAY FOR THAT!" howled [Krogor] as part of his in-game script.
"Took you long enough." Taiga panted as she took this chance to use a healing crystal, instantly refilling most of the HP lost while the rest was being restored by her [Battle Healing] skill "Was wondering if you were hiding behind a corner or something."
"...Maybe later." Mio joked as she held her weapon in front of her with both hands "But right now, we have a boss to defeat"
"Mio cracking a joke? Wonders never cease."
"Very funny." Despite herself, Mio couldn't help but smile at Taiga's retort.
"So, what's the plan?" Asuna asked as the rest of them regrouped.
"Me, Taiga and Klein will engage from the front and act as a diversion. " Mio explained the strategy while keeping her eyes locked on the giant gator "Asuna, I want you and Yui to attack it from the sides while we keep it distracted. All of you, use potions and crystals when your health is almost gone."
"Hai!" both Yui and Asuna nodded while Taiga and Klein couldn't help but smile.
"Someone's finally come out of her shell." the drummer thought with a happy heart "I guess there's some good in being in this world after all."
"It's coming around again! You know the drill, guys!"
"RIGHT!"
And so they battled as a unified front, Mio's strategy proving to be effective. The three person vanguard proved to be more than able to withstand the furious tempest of the boss' attacks while Yui and Asuna attacked like hornets, going for the sting then backing away before the opponent could react. This continued until [Krogor] was down to half of his last life bar.
"C'mon guys! We're nearing the home stretch!" Taiga roared to encourage her friends as they prepared for the final assault.
Unfortunately, [Krogor] had one last ace up his sleeve.
"I WILL CRUSH YOU!" In typical SAO boss fashion, his battle patterns changed as he neared death. In his case, the gator took a step back, creating some distance.
"What's he doing?" Klein asked the party regrouped. They kept their guard up, though, as each were seasoned enough to know that something was up.
"Don't lower your guard, even for a second!" Mio commanded as each of the kept their weapon at ready, their stance resolute in the face of this monster. It was then she began to look for any sign of a change in the boss; a strength buff or anything of the sort. Anything she can use to tell what the boss was up to when-
"Doesn't it look like it's taking a deep breath?"
Mio then saw that it indeed was taking a long breath, it's face puffing up from the wind it was exhaling. Klein, however, saw what was coming. He had played enough games to know what was going to happen next.
"It's a breath attack! Everyone, SCATTER!"
His warning, however, was a second too late; [Krogor] unleashed a powerful breath of green flames directed at the party.
"Oh crap!" Taiga growled as she attempted to step in front at the party's defense, but the power of said breath was an Area of Effect type attack, causing significant damage to her and the people she was trying to defend.
"D-damn it..." she cursed as she all their health bars hit the yellow zone.
"TAIGA, LOOK OUT!"
The drummer was not able to react as the massive croc made another frenzied attack. She attempted to guard from the front, but the beast was ready for it as it swung it's tail, which was a thick as a log, and watched as it collided with the mace user's side.
"Gwah!" She cried out in pain as she was sent soaring to the side.
"RICCHAN!" Yui called out frantically as she watched her friend's health hit the danger zone "You'll pay for that!" she roared as she took her sword in both hands and leaped head on for a [Sonic Nail], only for the beast to kick her in the gut with enough force to send her flying as well.
"Damn you!" Asuna roared as she attempted to strike with a [Linear] from behind, only for a back-hand to hit her and take her out of commission as well.
"Yui! Asuna!" Mio called out in worry just as the massive beast towered above her, it's jaw curled into a menacing grin.
"Tasty meat..." he growled savagely, the blackette's eyes widening in fear as it opened it's jaw to reveal several rows of teeth. She was unable to move, paralyzed by the old fears she had when this entire thing started. Seeing her allies crumpled before her, their life bars near zero as they struggled to get to their feet, did nothing to soothe her fears.
"I'm going to die...I'm really going to die..."
As [Krogor's] jaws widened, she could feel several teardrops trickle, her fear dominating her completely "I don't want to die!"
"I WILL SWALLOW YOU WHOLE!"
"I DON'T WANT TO DIE!"
"MIO! LOOK OUT!"
Just mere seconds before the jaws descended, Klein ran as far as his AGI can take him and tackled Mio, literally pushing her away from the jaws of death. They tumbled for a few moments before coming to a stop. At that same time, Taiga got to her feet, her health back at yellow thanks to Battle Healing, and reengaged the monster.
"I'm not done yet!" she growled as she did her best to buy Klein and Mio some time.
"Mio! Stay with me!" Klein tried to soothe her, but it was no use, the fear rooted deep in her heart had overtaken her.
"We're going to die here, Klein!" she frantically thrashed in his grasp, her eyes wild with terror "We're going to die here and there's nothing we can do!"
"Get a grip, Mio!" The scruffy man grabbed both shoulders harshly. Something he regretted doing, but knew that he had to "Weren't you the one that brought hope to the people back at that restaurant in the 2nd Floor?! The one who inspired Yui to keep fighting again?!"
"I...I..."
"You inspired me too, actually." He said with faint blush on his face "The way you go into every boss fight despite being scared, leading your friends despite your fear...it's an example I wanna follow."
"R-really?"
"Really." At his earnest words, the raven-haired bassist finally calmed down, the panicked state now replaced with one of tranquility. With a smile, she looked up at Klein with relieved smile.
"Thanks. I really appreciate it."
"No problem." With a nod, Klein let go of Mio, got to his feet and offered a hand that Mio took to get herself up. "Now, lets give this monster an ass-kicking."
"Right!" Mio said with a nod and a smile, determined not to let her fears overcome her again.
"Uhm guys..." Both turned to see that Taiga was pointing at [Krogor], who was preparing another breath attack.
"Oh shit." both Klein and Mio cursed simultaneously. Seeing as not even Taiga had enough health to take another one of those, death seemed certain.
They were so prepared for the worst, they did not expect a white blur emerge from the bulrushes and slam into the croc with all it's might. The force of the attack not only took it off it's feet, but redirected the breath so that it didn't hit it's intended target.
"What the..."
Upon further inspection, the white clad figure had a spear in both hands. A spear she used to thrust right at the boss' gut.
"Thank goodness..." She turned to face the three, whose expressions ranged from shocked to just plain flabbergasted "I arrived on time!"
That tell-tall winged-helmet told them who their mysterious ally was.
"It's...the Valkyrie..."
