"See? It's possible that you love him too. Not to mention that he's Melrose dad—"
"Dad? Did I hear about Daddy?"
Melrose walked in the dining room, clutching her teddy bear just in time when Mike said those words. The adults froze in shock; no one anticipated the little girl walked in to the room.
"Hey, sweetie…" Quinn managed to opened her mouth after a while.
Melrose ran to her mother and said, "Mommy, were you talking about Daddy? Where is he? I want to meet him!"
Quinn scooped Melrose up and put the little girl on her lap. She looked at her daughter closely. Usually, when she did that she could only see that Melrose was basically a mini version of her. Now, all she could see was Sam's eyes and lips.
"Mommy?"
"Oh, yeah. What is it, sweetie?"
"Why are you talking about Daddy? Is he here? I want to meet him!"
Quinn wanted to cry. Melrose never really asked about her dad and Quinn never felt the need to tell some made up stories about her dad. Now the little girl seemed so excited about the possibility of hearing something about her dad.
Quinn took a glance around the room. Everyone gave her a pity look. They might help her raising Melrose, but this wasn't something they could help. Quinn had to handle this on her own.
"Mommy? Why I never meet my daddy? Does he hate me?" Melrose asked her mom again and this time, her voice cracks.
Quinn felt her heart breaks. "Hey, sweetie. Look at me," she said as she lifted the little girl's chin. "No, Daddy doesn't hate you. He's just…"
"He doesn't hate me?"
"No," Quinn paused a little, thinking if she should lie or tell her daughter the truth. "He loves you, honey." She decided to lie anyway.
That made the little girl smiled. "I love Daddy too. Even though I never met him," she said. "Where is he, Mommy? Why I never met him?"
Quinn sighed. "He's… somewhere. Look, honey. You remember when I have to go away so I can work for both of us?" The little girl nodded and Quinn continued, "Daddy is doing the same thing too. He's working for both of us."
"When is he coming back? Mommy, I wanna meet Daddy!"
"I'm not sure, honey. But I'll ask him, kay?" she said as she ruffled her daughter's hair.
"You're going to meet him? I wanna meet Daddy too, Mommy."
"No… I'm going to call him."
"Can you call Daddy now? I wanna talk to him!"
"I can't call him now, sweetie. He's working now, I can only call him at night," she said. Melrose pouted and Quinn let out a chuckle, "I'll tell him that you miss him and that you love him. How's that sound?"
"Okay, Mommy," Melrose said as she kissed her mom's cheek.
"I love you, honey… and Daddy loves you too. Don't you forget about that, kay?" Quinn said as she kissed her daughter's head. Melrose nodded and Quinn said, "Why don't you play with Aunty Tina first?"
Melrose scrambled down from Quinn's lap and pulled Tina's hand to the living room, leaving Quinn with Lily, Mike, and Claire in the dining room. Once Melrose was out from the earshot, Quinn broke down.
It was clear that she was holding everything back when she answered Melrose's questions but now she was hyperventilating. Mike saw it and immediately hugged her, an attempt to calm her down. Quinn told him that when she was hyperventilating at the hospital, Sam just simply hold her and she calmed down immediately. So he hoped that this trick would work too.
But he was wrong. Quinn wasn't calming down at all. He could feel Quinn still having trouble breathing. He was confused. Sam could calm her down easily, why couldn't he?
"Hey, Quinn? You need to breathe," he said as he rubbed her back.
"I… can't…," she said in between sob.
"Try, okay? You need something?" he asked then he turned to his mom who watching them with concerned expression. "Mom, can you fetch her some water?"
Lily handed a glass of water to Quinn. She tried to drink it carefully and it did calm her down a little bit.
Still sobbing, Quinn finally managed to speak. "That's why I never mentioned anything about her dad to her. I won't know what to say…"
Lily put an arm around Quinn's shoulder. "But you do know that you'll tell her eventually, right?"
Quinn nodded. "But not now, when she wouldn't understand anything. Now, she would just ask more questions and I won't know what to answer her."
"But you managed to tell her those things earlier," Claire pointed out.
"That girl already have so many lies in her life. I couldn't lie anymore to her. That was painful," Quinn said. "How can I explain to her later that her dad doesn't even know that she's existed? God, why my life is so messed up?"
Quinn was crying again. No one know how to answered all her worries, no one know how to calm her down.
"It doesn't matter," Quinn talked again after some time. She wiped her tears and said, "I need to go now."
"Where are you going?" Mike couldn't help but ask.
"Lima Mall. I need to pick up Sam's DVD, remember?"
"You're still going back to him after all of this mess? Come on, you need to stay with Mel at least."
"I can't just leave him, okay? And I can't stay with Mel now. She would just ask me more questions about her dad."
"Whatever," said Mike definitely pissed.
Quinn scoffed. "Come on, Mike. You know that I'm right."
"Yeah, you're always right." There's an obvious sarcasm on his voice.
Quinn rolled her eyes then turned to Lily and Claire. "Mom, Claire, I need to go first. Take care of Mel for me?"
"We will, Quinnie. Don't worry about that," Lily said as she hugged Quinn. "Are you okay now?"
Quinn shook her head. "I'm still freakin' out right now but I can control it. I need to control it—"
"Maybe Sam can take care of her later. Obviously since they love each other," Mike cut in.
Usually Quinn would get mad but she was too tired to argue. "Just ignore what Mike said. I'll see you guys tomorrow, kay?"
After she said that, she went out to the living room and approached her daughter.
"Hey, sweetie. What are you doing?"
The little girl who was currently occupied by crayons looked up to see her mother. "I'm drawing," she smiled.
"What are you drawing? Can I see it?"
"Sure," the little girl nodded. "I'm drawing Mommy, Daddy, and me! But Mommy, I don't know what Daddy's look like. I can't draw him. What he's look like? Is he handsome?"
Quinn felt her breath hitched again but she tried her hardest to control it for Melrose's sake. "He's so handsome…" Quinn felt her cheek went red. God, not now… "And he has blonde hair."
"Just like Mommy and me?" Melrose's eyes went wide because of the excitement.
Quinn smiled at her daughter's excitement. "Yup, just like us. Oh, and his eyes and lips just looks like yours."
"Really?"
Quinn nodded. "Now you can draw him, right?" The little girl nodded her head and Quinn continued to talk. "Mommy has to go, sweetie. But I'll be back tomorrow, kay?"
"What about my drawing?" Melrose pouted, hated the idea that her mom won't see her drawing.
"You can show me tomorrow, kay? Mommy really have to go now," Quinn said as she kissed her daughter's forehead. "Be a good girl for Mommy, okay?"
Melrose nodded and she kissed Quinn's cheek. "Okay. I love you, Mommy."
"I love you too, sweetheart…"
The Changs' place wasn't that far from Lima Mall so she arrived in just around 15 minutes after she left the house. She immediately found the DVD store that Sam mentioned earlier and went it. She walked through the counter and a shop helper greeted her.
"Hello, Miss. My name is Robert and how can I help you?"
"I'm here to pick up an order. Avatar DVD set. The limited edition one," she explained.
"Okay. What's the name?"
"Fabray… Lucy Fabray."
"Wait a second. I'll check it first." Robert typed the name on the computer. "Sorry, Miss. There's no Lucy Fabray in our system. However, there's one order by the name of Lucy Evans."
Quinn shook her head. Really Sam? "Well yeah, that's me. Lucy Evans it is."
"Forgetting your last name?"
"No. It's my… fiancé's last name. He was the one who put in the order. God, I'm going to kill him later."
Robert chuckled and said, "Well, let me get the DVD set for you. Do you want to put it in a bag or wrap it like a present?"
"Wrap it, please."
"Okay then. You can wait over there," he said as he pointed a couch opposite the counter.
Quinn walked and seated herself on the couch. After a few minutes, the Robert guy called her name and gave her the DVD set. She paid for it and she left the store, made her way back to the townhouse.
"Baby?"
The sound of Sam's voice made Quinn's stomach churned. She was currently cooking some shrimp for dinner in the kitchen. Sam must have smelled the shrimp because a moment later, she felt his arms snakes around her waist.
"Hey, baby," he said as he kissed her cheek. "Why you're not responding?"
Quinn turned around to face him. "Hello to you too," she pecked his lips. "I didn't really hear you. I'm cooking my shrimp."
Sam released his arms from the blonde girl's waist and leaned himself at the kitchen table, watching his girlfriend continue to cook. "What are you making?"
"I'm not sure yet. But I guess we could switch from bacon to shrimp, right?"
Sam gave her a sheepish grin. "I know what's more delicious than shrimp…"
"And what is that?"
Sam walked towards the stove and turned it off. When the girl was about to turn around and protest, he grabbed her wrist, turned her around, and pulled her closer. "You…"
Quinn felt her cheek went red. "No… no, we can't do what you're thinking right now," Quinn shook her head and continue, "I'm cooking our dinner."
"It's already done. The stove is off already," he smirked at her.
Quinn sighed, obviously defeated, but smiled nonetheless. "Then what are you waiting for?"
Sam didn't waste anytime as he crashed his lips to the blonde girl in front of him immediately. He grabbed her legs and she wrapped her arms around his neck. Still not letting go each other's lips, he carried her to the bedroom and laid her down on their bed. Sam was about to unzip her dress when he felt the girl pushed him away.
Breathlessly, Sam groaned but couldn't help but ask, "What?"
Quinn was also out of breath but she managed to speak. "You're forgetting something…"
Sam furrowed his eyebrows. "What am I forgetting?"
Quinn rolled out from the bed and made her way to the walk-in-closet and retrieved the DVD set that she's been hiding there. "Happy birthday, my dear. Sorry, it took so so so long," she said as she handed him the gift.
Sam's eyes went wide. "Wow, babe! You're really buying that?"
"Am I that mean to you? Of course, I'll buy that," she chuckled at his childlike expression when he opened the wrapping. "One thing though… Lucy Evans? Really?"
Sam stopped his current movement and pulled her closer to him. "That will be your name in the future, though…" He cupped her face and brought it closer to him then leaned their forehead together, looking straight to her eyes. "Do you want that?"
Quinn wrapped her arms around his neck. "I… I think so…"
"You think so? Why? Are you having doubts about us?"
She could tell that she hurt him a bit and that made her heart aches too. "No… it's not that. It's just…"
"What is it, baby?" he said as he tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Well… I know we're technically engaged since two years ago but you do realize that we only have a real relationship for like a week, right?" He nodded his head and she continued, "A week is still a short time. In a real relationship, it's still the stage of getting to know each other. And with you keep saying things for the future like building a family, I'm taking your last name, and you keep saying the um…"
"The 'I love you' thing?" he finished the sentence for her.
"Yeah, that thing… It's not like I don't like it, but… I'm just not ready for it. At least now."
Sam took in what she said and pulled her even closer. Now she was seated on his lap and still had her arms around his neck. Sam took her left hand and placed it on his chest.
"Can you feel this, baby? No one ever made my heart beats crazy like this, except you…"
Quinn was surprised. True to Sam's words, she could feel his heartbeats so damn fast. "Has it always like this?"
"Ever since last week. Since I saw you after my trip to New York. I don't know what changes but sometimes I feel like my heart is about to burst."
Quinn didn't say anything. Instead, she mirrored what Sam did earlier. She took his hand and placed it on her chest.
"You feel that, Sam?" she asked him.
He nodded. "So… you feel the same way as I am?"
"I'm heading that way… I'm not sure when will I told you how I feel but you'll know it."
Sam took his hand away from her chest and cupped her face. "I won't pressure you if you're not ready, kay?"
"Okay…"
"And baby?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for the gift. I love it."
"You're welcome. Well, you chose it yourself so—"
"But I love you more," he pecked her lips.
"Sam?"
"Yeah?"
"You love me that much?"
"I love you more than anything. And I'll show you now, if you allow me."
Quinn didn't answer him. She just kissed his lips and in no time, both of them fell to the bed.
