A/N: Another chapter from Jason, this is my first stab at writing "action," and I have to say it turned out a bit gorier and violent that I expected. If this could upset you in any way Please Do Not Read.
As always I hope everyone enjoys it.
Chapter 11
Jason POV
It was time, and Jason was filled with nervous energy as he gathered up a feisty Sookie from her chair, and carried her to the upstairs bedroom.
"Dammit Jason! Put me down, I ain't gonna get locked away like some princess in a tower while ya'll are out there fightin'." Jason rolled his eyes heavenward, and counted to ten.
"Now Sookie, just what do you think you're gonna do instead? You can barely move. It's better if you stay up here where you won't be a distraction!" As Sookie's bottom lip started to quiver, Jason found himself instantly trying to take back his harsh words. "Sorry, sorry I just meant if we're completely focused on keeping an eye on you, it might make us less alert." Satisfied with what he felt was a very diplomatic answer, he nudged open the door to Sookie's old room with his toe.
"Can you at least bring me Gran's shotgun just in case?" Her eyes still swam with tears, but her voice remained steady and even. Jason huffed out a breath.
"Sook, you can't shoot no shotgun with your arm in that cast, but if it'll make you feel better I got somethin' in my bag you can use." Jason sat Sookie down gently on the bed before he sprinted back down to the kitchen to get himself geared up. There were only two vampires, so he loaded regular bullets for the werewolves, and stowed his scarce few wooden bullets away in his back pocket. He strapped both his riffles to his back, and stuffed the silver net and spray each in separate pockets in the front. That left only his Colt 1911 handgun still lying in the now otherwise empty bag. He snatched it up, and made a note to grab Gran's shot gun on his way back out. He barreled up the stairs noisily, and handed the Colt to Sookie.
"Safety's here." He said pointing to a small switch at the rear of the gun. "Do not unlock it unless someone gets into the house, you here me. Now I'm serious it's loaded, and I know you're not real familiar with handguns." Jason stop in his rush, to place a kiss to his sister's cheek. "I love you Sook, anyone gets in here you shoot to kill alright." It was difficult to leave her standing there looking so frightened, but Jason understood better than ever now, that the right thing is very seldomly the easy thing.
Jason burst from the house, pausing only momentarily to strain his ears for any sounds. An animal's pained shriek echoed from the south west woods, but Jason reasoned that if it was hurt either Waldo or the defense's were doing their job there. Another howl echoed to the north, and without any hesitation Jason took off in its direction. Even once he reached the trees, the uneven forest floor did little to slow his pursuit. After all, he'd stomped through these woods for longer than even he could remember, and knew them better than anyone. There were no signs of disturbance so Jason assumed that nothing had made it this close to the house yet. Deeper and deeper into the woods he trekked, but still there were no signs of anything. His nerves were starting to get the better of him, but Jason kept his eyes alert, and his gun in front of him, at the ready. It was nearly two miles in before Jason finally saw movement. It was so damn fast he nearly missed it, and his mind screamed vampire, but it was too low to the ground. Jason aimed and fired one shot straight to its head. The thing went down like a bag of rocks, and Jason trotted over to where the once wolf laid. It seemed as soon as you killed them they immediately shifted back to human, now that was an issue Jason hadn't prepared for. Just how in the world was he gonna explain nearly two dozen dead bodies out in his sister's woods?
The question however, was quickly pushed to the back of his mind, as two more wolves charged him from opposite sides. Jason startled and fired rapidly at the closest, but only barely managed to hit its left flank. Thankfully it was enough to somewhat slow its attack, which allowed Jason to nimbly spin around and fire off two shots at the other wolf's heart. It dropped, but Jason was unable to be sure it was dead, as the first wolf was suddenly on him, knocking him to the forest floor. Jason was somehow able to keep his gun in his hands, and used it to shield his neck from the wolf's powerful jaw. Jason kicked up with his legs, but it barely did a thing, as the damn beast was just too heavy. He was swiftly losing strength in his arms, and he knew he wouldn't be able to keep the gun between them for much longer. In a moment of inspiration he began rocking his body from side to side in an attempt to throw off the creature's balance. In a way it worked, just not as Jason had thought. The wolf's head rocked close to the end of the gun and Jason saw an opportunity. When again rocking to that side Jason used every bit of force he could muster, waited for the right moment, and squeezed the trigger. Blood, brains, and god only knew what else went everywhere, and Jason felt a light stinging as it hit his face. He shoved the now human corpse off him, and just laid there for a second or two as his heart slowed. Guilt prickled at him as his eyes went from one body, to the next, and the next. Three lives taken by his hands, he could only hope Jesus would forgive him. He staggered to his feet, reloaded his gun, and continued on. He could worry about his soul once he was sure his sister was safe.
It was too damn quiet, Jason decided. He'd probably made it another quarter mile north, and not one sound. He didn't even hear the normal noises of the woods, just an eerie silence that made his skin crawl with goosebumps. His eyes scanned around him warily, but the forest was getting denser and allowed little of the moon's light to filter in. When he began bumping into trees and tripping in undergrowth, he concluded he'd have to start heading west where he knew the canopy was thinner. It seemed the wolves must have had the same issue as he found body after body the further west he went. He kept a running count in his head, four down, seven down, on and on as he passed them. In his own mind Jason could admit he found the death inflicted by his granddaddy's magic a little disturbing. It was like something out of a horror movie, there were wolves impaled in the trees, ripped apart by the thorn bushes, strangled by the vines. It was all so violent and horrible Jason couldn't keep from gagging. He was walking through a battlefield where the wolves hadn't stood a chance. Jason kept to the brighter areas of the forest as he wandered aimlessly, and wondered if it was all over. So far he'd counted twelve dead werewolves including the three he'd killed, and he couldn't possibly know how many had been sent to the woods of Hot Shot. It had all happened so fast, he'd only left Sookie just under an hour ago, it couldn't really be so easy, could it?
"Jason!" Jason yelped in fear, his finger twitching on the trigger of his gun.
"Waldo?" He recognized the other man just in time and lowered his weapon. "Man, don't you know not to sneak up on someone with a gun?" Waldo shrugged.
"I apologize, I'm not accustomed to such things. We must hurry, your grandfathers protections have worked well, but the few remaining wolves and their master are very near to reaching the house." Jason felt an icy finger race down his spine and he motioned for Waldo to lead the way, and they both took off at a dead run. Waldo was faster, but Jason was able to keep him in sight as they headed further west. Jason pushed every bit of strength he had into his legs, as he recognized they were heading straight toward a little clearing just minutes from the farm house. Waldo stopped just before where the trees would no longer hide them and crouched down, waiting. Jason came to his side and mimicked the stance, not seconds later Bill, a vampire Jason didn't recognize, and five wolves broke through the trees to their left. They might still be walking, but all except the unknown were injured. They watched silently as the small group stopped just inside the clearing. The strange vampire shoved Bill out farther into the clearing.
"It looks safe but. . ." Bill cast a wary look at the other vampire, and he irritatedly motioned for Bill to continue. "I swear your Majesty, I've passed through these woods a thousand times, and never have I experienced anything like we've seen tonight. Sookie is ignorant of her heritage, there is no way she was able to do what we've seen. I. . . I have no explanation for it."
"Stop stalling and move Compton, I have no patience for your platitudes at present." Bill took one step and then another and Jason watched with baited breath as he moved further and further inside. Bill moved slowly, but eventually he was standing dead center. It seemed every vampire, human, wolf and fairy released a collective sigh as he stood there. Bill held his hand up, and the rest of the party began to move forward. They'd not taken three steps when the entire clearing began to tremble beneath their feet. The king and his wolves tried to move back, but it was already too late. The trees around them closed ranks and stood ready with deadly branches should they get too near. Large cracks began to form, streaking every which way across the empty expanse, growing wider and wider. The imprisoned danced from foot to foot avoiding them as the appeared, but solid ground was becoming scarce. One of the wolves was the first to succumb. The wolf's front legs scrambled to prevent sliding entirely into the chasm that suddenly appeared just under its hind legs, and it seemed he might prevail until said chasm snapped back together like a large jagged lipped mouth. The wolf screamed in pain as its lower body was crushed between the unforgiving bedrock, and Jason could hear the sickening sound of so many bones and other things giving way under the pressure. Every single being in the clearing watched in aghast shock as finally, mercifully the light left the creature's eyes. Jason couldn't take anymore, he wouldn't stand by and watch any more of this sick horror show. He lifted his rifle and aimed, simultaneously pushing back any sense of wrongness he felt at shooting them while they were trapped, instead focusing solely on what they would do to Sookie should they reach the house. That was all the justification he needed to make short work of ending the four remaining wolves. The king zipped over to where Bill was standing and threw him like battering ram into the trees on the other side of the clearing, smashing two of them into nothing more than splinters. The king blurred away through the gap and Bill staggered and stumbled, but finally managed to follow. Jason and Waldo took off after them as fast as they could, but they knew they wouldn't be able to stop them from reaching the house.
Waldo never paused as he hurtled himself straight for the king, but moments from actually reaching him, the king dodged the attack, but suddenly the fairy was just gone! Disappearing and somehow reappearing just behind the king, a silver stake in hand. The king barely avoided the blow to his heart, but Waldo was still able to embed the weapon just between his neck and shoulder. Waldo quickly retrieved his weapon and popped away to a safer distance.
Meanwhile Jason and Bill were in a face off of their own. When Bill had first reached the house he'd made a direct path right for the front door, but Jason wasn't terribly concerned about that. The very first thing Sookie had done when they'd got home from the hospital early this morning, was rescind Bill's invitation. The second reason Jason wasn't panicking was that there was still one last defense left. Jason loaded a wooden bullet into his Gran's gun and took aim. His heart was pounding in his chest, and he watched and waited as everything went almost exactly the way his Grandaddy had said it would. Just as Bill was about to reach the steps to the porch, Gran's roses shot out at him from either side, their thorny vines tangling around him, bringing him to a screeching stop. Jason pulled the trigger, but at the last second Bill escaped the vines hold, and the bullet missed its target, and slammed uselessly into the house instead. Bill lunged at Jason knocking the gun from his hands, the wooden butt to shattering into a million pieces when it struck the foundation of the house. They wrestled on the ground, but Jason was no match for the vampire's strength and he quickly found himself pinned. Bill was snarling viciously, and Jason knew he only had seconds before he was torn apart. Jason shoved one hand up into Bill's chin causing the vampire's own fangs to pierce into his lips and jaw, while simultaneously reaching into the pocket he knew carried the silver spray. Bill reared back from the pain of the blow, and Jason doused the bastard's face in silver. Jason had seen the damage a silver net did to poor Eddie, but the spray was a million times worse than even that. Bill's whole face was smoking and it looked like the skin was just melting off. In fact, Jason was so shocked by the carnage he'd created, he nearly forgot the next part of his plan, but only nearly. Jason yanked the silver net from his other pocket and quickly cocooned Bill in it. Jason kicked up and threw Bill's weak form from on top of him, but the smell of burning flesh still filled Jason's nostrils, and his stomach heaved as he scrambled to get away.
During Jason's fight with Bill, Waldo had kept the king busy, even being able to inflict a few more strikes, and the silver was slowly managing to weaken the king. It looked as though that hadn't come without a price for Waldo though, as he too had his fair share of wounds. Just as they were about to come together once again, the king froze.
"Talbot!" Waldo saw the opportunity provided, and took it, his stake finally hitting its target and sinking deep. "Thank you." The King whispered as bloody tears streaked from his eyes, Jason looked on in confusion as the King let out a relieved sigh and liquified. Waldo retrieved his stake from the mess, cleaning the worst of the gore off on the grass, before slipping it back into the pocket of his jacket.
"Granddaddy wanted this one if we could manage to take him alive. He's the one responsible for my cousin's death." Jason said kicking the whimpering vampire.
"We will need to get him to the cemetery then. I am afraid you will have to do the majority of the dragging. My wounds have left me weaker than I would care to admit." Jason nodded he could see the strain in Waldo's face from just trying to keep standing.
"Let's go then. I want to get this done so I can go check on Sook. wouldn't hurt to let her know we're okay either."
It wasn't the most pleasant thing Jason had ever been asked to do that was for sure. The smell was really revolting to him, and he found he had to stop several times during the short trip in order to throw up. Waldo didn't ridicule him for this though, he simply remained silent and gave Jason the privacy to do what he needed to. Upon reaching the cemetery Waldo explained that Jason should take their cargo to a small ring of trees on the right. It wasn't far and Jason had it done in a matter of minutes. They wished each other farewell and Jason thanked Waldo for all his help, and in a flash of blinding light Waldo and Bill were gone.
Jason headed back to the house a brisk pace, he wanted to run, but the God's honest truth was he was just way to darn worn out. He'd just reached the edge of the yard when he heard a gun go off from inside the house. Forgetting his fatigue Jason sprinted to the house.
