Unexpected Changes

Roxy opened the front door, much to Mike's delight as he saw more familiar people. She greeted them with a smile as she let them in.

"Hi Roxy." Said the girl at the door.

"Hey Roxy, how's it going?" said a guy standing next to the girl.

"Well nice to meet you." Maddie said with a smile. Everyone looked the newcomers up and down.

"Hello, I am Terrie." The girl said to the parents. She looked over at the owners of the house and greeted them. "You must be Mr. and Mrs. Fenton." At the nod she continued. "Thanks for letting us come over." Terrie kind of stood out. She had dark brown eyes that were behind black framed glasses that had white zebra stripes running through, and long wavy light brown hair that was let down, complete with a side bang to the right. Her black tank top that said 'Music is Life' matched her black and red skirt that reached her knees. She also had on converse that was designed with a faded black and white American flag. However, the multiple piercings made her stick out a bit, snake bites, bars on both ears, cartilage piercings, a nose ring, and an eyebrow piercing above her left eye. Of course she also had multiple band bracelets on both arms and a necklace that had a tiny scissor charm. Terrie nodded their direction to acknowledge them, and stood next to Roxy since she knew her most.

"Hi Mr. and Mrs. Fenton, I'm John." Said the guy, stepping in and shaking their hands, but he stayed in the middle of the room. John was pretty normal, shaggy light brown hair and blue eyes, though a darker shade than Danny's. He wore a simple dark grey shirt and dark blue jeans, but he did have a few band bracelets like Terrie and black converse.

"Hello, nice to meet you two." Maddie greeted the kids.

"So how much do you know about ghosts?" Jack, of course, was already testing their knowledge.

"Uh, ghosts?" John was a bit confused by the question.

"Yes. In fact, we're working on a portal that will lead to the ghost zone!"

"Ahem!" Jazz 'cleared' her throat to hopefully get off topic of ghosts. "They're scientists." Not a lie.

"Well, yes that's true. But our main interest is ghost hunting." Maddie clarified. She looked over at Roxy's friends to see if there was a reaction to that. Then she spotted something hanging around Terrie's neck. Terrie of course noticed and followed her gaze. She realized where the older woman was looking and explained.

"It's my camera." She said, pulling in over her head to show them. They examined the professional photography camera. Black with the outlines a dark blue color.

"She's interested in becoming a photographer." John clarified.

"Oh! Would you mind taking another picture of us, all together?" Michelle asked, remembering Terrie's talent in photography. A picture of all of them together would be great. Terrie thought for a moment before she nodded.

"Terrie's a great photographer. The best I know." Roxy stated. Annie, Danny, Tucker, and Sam were about to sneak away when a large black glove stopped them.

"Danny, Sam, Tucker, Annie, you guys should be in the picture." Jack informed them. They groaned and knew they weren't getting out of this one. They walked over to the wall with the others. Terrie had her camera ready when they all posed. She seemed troubled though as she kept shifting the camera.

"Terrie?" Sam said to the girl, who in turn looked up at her. "Is something wrong?"

"Uh, well it's just that the lighting isn't good, no offense." She directed to the owners of the house. "Do you think we could take it outside?"

"Well if you think its better, then sure." Maddie assured her. With a few groans from certain teens, (*coughcoughAnniecoughcough*) they moved outside in front of the Fenton Works. They posed the way they did when they were inside. Then they realized they were missing someone.

"Terrie, join us." Michelle beckoned her.

"Yeah Terrie, it wouldn't be the same without you." John said. "I'll help you set up your equipment." He offered. They knew that also hanging around her neck, were the legs of the camera that needed to be set up. After a hesitant yes, he walked over, and they set it up in no time. Him and Roxy had helped Terrie plenty of times before with her equipment and could almost do it with their eyes closed. She took a while to position it, and set the timer, then joined the others. Finally the flash went off, indicated it had taken the picture.

'Finally.' Some of them thought.

"So uh, Jack?" Annie asked. "About your ghost projects-"

"The Fenton ghost portal! It's almost finished." Jack remembered the machine.

"That's right! In fact, it only needs about 15 more minutes of work left!" Maddie announced excitedly.

"In that case, we could stay a bit longer to watch, if you would let us." Michelle said. Beside her, Joseph agreed.

"Of course! Would you like to help?" Jack offered. With that, the adults went inside and down into the basement.

"Your parents are interested in ghosts too?" Danny asked Roxy.

"Well, a little bit, not as much as your parents seem to be." She responded.

"You have no idea." Jazz said. "Don't worry though; I'll keep you protected from their influence."

"No need. A bit random, but what college do you plan on going?" Annie asked Jazz who took no time in answering.

"I dream of going to Yale, or Harvard. What are you thinking of?" Jazz continued as they walked back inside with Mike trailing behind his oldest sister.

"And let me guess, your sister is also wondering about her future." Danny stated more than asked. Nonetheless Roxy nodded.

"She isn't sure what she wants to do."

"So…Terrie, you like movi-oof" Tucker rubbed his stomach where he got elbowed by Sam. Terrie simply gave him a blank stare.

"Oh that reminds me." Roxy muttered before going over to her mom's car and opened the trunk. She pulled something out and closed the trunk before rejoining everyone else.

"A skateboard?" Danny asked.

"You skate?" Sam also asked.

"And how did that remind you of your skateboard?" Tucker questioned. They got their question answered by John.

"Yeah a skateboard, yes she skates...and I don't know." He piped.

"Wow."

"So Danny?" John asked. "Your parents are obsessed with ghosts, and they're building a portal to the Ghost Zone?" They started walking inside to the couch.

"Yeah. They're really absorbed in their work."

"But a Ghost Zone does sound pretty cool." Sam said while trying to imagine what is on the other side.

"But is that a good idea? Who knows what ghosts are really like." Terrie asked no one in particular. No one could even answer her as a voice came from the basement.

"Kids, could you come down here for a bit?" Maddie's voice rang throughout the house. The portal was ready.

Down in the basement, it was littered with test tubes, maps for new ideas, weird experiments, blue prints, and fudge. The new comers glanced every which way at the strange objects everywhere, but rested their eyes on the portal.

"This baby will open up a new dimension with ghosts!" Jack explained. "We call it the Ghost Zone."

"It's finally completed." His wife said excitedly.

"Get ready to witness the greatest invention of the century in action!" Jack said while picking up the two wires from the floor. All he needed was to plug them into each other and they would have a machine that could transport them into a whole zone full of ghosts!

"Well I for one seriously disagree with your project! I think it's harmful for yours and our mental health. Especially around developing teens like Danny, Sam, Tucker, Roxy, Terrie, and John. Even more so with Mike." The orange haired teen protested. Of course her parents were used to this and were unfazed with her protest.

"Jazz, this could be the invention of the century!" Her mother told her.

"Yeah, and made by the Fentons!" Jack enthusiastically added. "Watch the magic happen." Jazz simply rolled her eyes, crossed her arms, and turned away to further show she was against anything to do with the machine.

Jack connected the wires. As a spark resounded, even Jazz turned to watch the process. Everyone was so caught in the moment. The machine sparked to life and began sparking all over, from the wire to the inside.

'This is it.' They all thought. Then it flashed white and the sparks flew all around them, and then died. 'This is not it.'

Everyone was frozen, a few mouths agape.

"Jack…" Maddie started, but didn't know what else to say. What could anyone say in this situation?

"That's alright…I mean," Jack chuckled slightly, but he was not amused. "Who am I kidding, a portal to the ghost zone?" Everyone just stared, not knowing what to say.

"Mr. Fenton, for what it's worth, I think the invention was an incredible idea." John tried to offer comfort. No one knew what to say.

"Thanks kiddo." He offered a small smile. "Besides, we probably just have to make some adjustments and it'll be shipshape!" He added his usual vigor into his voice. He had brightened up almost instantly.

"Yeah, you can make a better one." Added Joseph.

"That's right! Later, we are going to do it over!" Maddie said, also with vigor. They weren't going to let one failure bring them down. "So let's catch up over some coffee." She directed at Joseph and Michelle.

All the adults had trudged up the stairs; all the kids, excluding Mike, were left in the basement. They silently looked over the machine.

"You should take a look inside." Sam suggested. Everyone yore their eyes off the machine and turned to her with wide eyes.

"Uh." Danny nervously laughed. "You're joking, right?"

"It doesn't even work. What's it going to do?" John said taking Sam's side.

"I'll check it out! It looks cool!" Roxy exclaimed.

"You guys can't be serious. Are you?" Danny asked.

"Oh come on Danny, what's the worst that could happen?" Same said teasingly. The machine
doesn't work, what's he afraid of?

"I wouldn't suggest looking inside." Terrie spoke up. Everyone turned to look at her, she has been really quiet. Noticing the silence, she went on. "It doesn't work, but what if you somehow activate something inside and something goes wrong and you end up half dead?"

"Well, it doesn't seem safe to me..." Tucker said nervously.

"But you saw what happened, they tried, and it's busted." John added.

"Yeah, what, are you afraid of ghost coming out of nowhere?" Sam teased.

"My parents could be back any minute and b-besides, they say it doesn't work anyway, so…uh…" Danny was stuck. Sam lifted her eyebrow expecting him to go on. He sighed. "Fine."

"Come on Danny, a ghost zone? You got to check it out!" Sam pushed even though he agreed.

"You know what, you're right. Who knows what kind of super cool stuff exists on the other side of this portal." Danny was now convinced.

"I'll look with you." Roxy said while walking closer to the machine. She was also convinced.

"Alright, we'll both go inside." Danny agreed. Terrie however wasn't convinced. She spotted some suits.

"Put those on." Terrie pointed at the suits. They were white with black boots, gloves, and belt.

"Uh, what for?" Tucker questioned.

"If something goes wrong, it would better to have those on." She explained. It only took a second for it to click. "

"Oh I see what you're getting at. She's right you guys." Sam backed her up.

"Yeah, I don't mind if you don't." Roxy stated.

"*sigh* Fine." Danny agreed. "I still don't know why you guys want us to do this, you already seen the portal. Can't we just go already?"

"Because it seems cool." They turned to the guy with shaggy hair. "Again, it doesn't work though."

"Here," Danny handed one of the suits to Roxy. He gave her one in his size, hoping it wasn't too big. "It looks like it'll fit." They both tried theirs on.

"Yeah, it's good." Roxy stated after putting hers on and moving her arms and legs. "I can move just fine." Hers was almost identical to Danny's, besides the fitting around certain areas.

"If I'm remembering correctly, my parents said they should provide some sort of protection from ectoplasmic energy." Danny explained.

"Hang on." Sam yanked Jack's face off Danny's and Roxy's suit. "You can't go walking around with these on your chests."

"Uh, ladies first?" Danny said nervously.

"I should be telling you that." Roxy said before taking the first step, and Danny quickly followed.

"Smile!" They turned just in time to see a white flash went off. Both Terrie and Sam had taken a picture.

"What's that for?" Danny asked. They walked to them to show the picture.

"Memories."

"I'll make copies for you guys."

"Oh, thanks."

"Why didn't you tell us before?" Danny asked. He would've posed if he was asked.

"The best pictures are taken when the person doesn't notice." Terrie said focusing on the picture she had just captured. It showed them inches from the machine, about to step in. She and Sam walked back to give them room. They turned back to the machine and stepped forward to enter again. Roxy headed in first with Danny close behind.

It was all medal, and the surfaces were rather reflective despite it being a dark color. They saw their reflections staring back at them clearly. A few sparks ran though, but nothing big, in fact you could hardly notice them if you weren't looking for them directly. It was almost as if the machine wanted to turn on. Huh. It was built in an octagonal shape; it was bigger on the inside than I appeared to be from the outside. However there was nothing of importance that they could find. Unknowingly, they walked passed a couple of buttons.

"Huh, there's nothing really in here." Roxy stated. Danny agreed with a nod of his head.

"Nothing?" Tuckers voice called to them.

"Nope, just a bunch of medal and bolts." Danny answered. "…Is that ectoplasm leaking from the walls?"

"And it's sparking a bit…and yes, yes it is."

"That doesn't sound good. Maybe you should come out already." Terrie's cautious voice spoke out.

"Yeah, you're probably right, who knows what that stuff will do to you." Roxy stepped back a bit and tripped over Danny's foot, right into him. He in turn fell back from the sudden weight, where his shoulder hit a small green button. Above it said 'On'. Suddenly a loud spark resounded from the back, its bright flash catching every ones attention. The machine lit up an ominous red, and it beeped.

Danny and Roxy both looked forward to the sound and all they saw was a swirling deep green and black before they were hit head on with the force.

"GAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Their yells were drowned out by the sound of the portal opening with the two inside. White hot searing pain tore through their bodies. They felt as if they were crushed and exploded at the same time. Words couldn't even describe the feeling accurately enough. It felt like it lasted an eternity when it finally stopped, but in reality it had only been five seconds.

They crashed to the floor instantly.

They could hardly move. It sort of felt like when your leg falls asleep and it hurt to move because of the seemingly invisible needles that pinch you, except all over and twice as worse. They walked out to the entrance of it hexagonal machine, in everyone's view. They had to use each other and the wall for support.

"*GASP*" At the huge gasp of everyone else in the room, they looked up, despite how much effort was need. They looked up to the sight of everyone staring at them as if they seen a ghost! Their eyes were wide, as was their mouths, and they stepped forward to help them up.

"Danny?" "Roxy?" The voices came out as a question. As if they weren't sure who they were talking to. "Are you ok?"

They looked down, wondering what they were talking about, and were surprised that the suits weren't even the same. They were black, and the boots, gloves, and belt that were black, were now white. They inverted colors! They felt something within them stirring. A coldness that wouldn't go away. Then, they glanced at each other and were even more shocked.

"Danny, you-!"

"Roxy, you-!" They both cut each other off. But if the other looked like that then…what about themselves? They stood up and turned around to face the machine hoping to look in one of the reflective surfaces, however instead, the different shades of green and a few black streak swirls took up the inside, did it turn on? Tucker had taken out two of his phones and activated the camera. He pressed inside view and handed it to Roxy and Danny to show them what they had become.

What they saw shocked them the most of all. They turned their heads at the sounds of footsteps of the adults rushing down the steps.

HAHA CLIFFHANGER! As you probably noticed, I changed the machine scene a lot. Anyways, I also have a question to ask you guys. Here it is: What element should Roxy be able to control? Danny's is ice, which we all know, however I'm still thinking of what Roxy's' should be. I will put up a poll on my bio, or if you could PM me on the matter, that would be very helpful. Also what did you think of Terrie and John? There wasn't much here about them, but you'll know more in Mystery Meat where we get all their personalities. See you guys later.
