A/N: New Chapter day. Whoop. I'm so irregular with uploading these day. It's starting to annoy me. This is chapter sixteen, and it's mostly a filler chapter, so the story doesn't really go anywhere, but it sets up the rest of the story, so it's kind of a chapter that's needed. I hope you are enjoying this story. It's almost over so you'll be out of misery soon. Thanks for reading. Enjoy. JusticeIsn'tEasy0083. D.
Chapter Sixteen: Wedding Day Surprises
They had just come back from their camping trip two hours ago, and already, Rachel, Mercedes, Santana and Brittany were at their house, asking them a million and one question's. Kurt was doing well to dodge them, Holly was preoccupied with Olivia and Blaine was in the middle of marking the children's school work, before the start of the new week. Neither were interested in talking about what had happened, mostly because this week was dedicated to Santana and Brittany, and whatever anyone else's news, they could wait until the following week. Brittany didn't see it this way, she saw it as an excuse to just throw a bigger party at their wedding, but Kurt swore they weren't hiding anything... Blaine had seen many changes in his boyfriend over the two weeks they were away. Kurt and Wes had put aside all their differences and formed a weird sort of bond. Neither was too sure if they would call themselves friends, but Kurt knew that they were no longer at logger heads over whatever Wes' problem was with him. David had always been cool with Kurt, and Nick and Jeff were friends with Kurt, and were acting as though they had been friends for years, which is fine with Blaine... he's glad that they're finally all getting along. No more awkward conversations about the Warblers, and then having to calm Kurt down when someone says something stupid, or Wes does something stupid. Blaine's also feeling a lot better about their relationship now. He knows where they are, and where they're going.
Kurt was also feeling a lot better... about everything. He and Holly had had a wonderful talk about what happened, and she told him that she didn't mean to scare her father, or any of her family or friends. Kurt told her that she needs to earn back their trust, and promise that she will always tell them where she's going. She promised that she would do everything her father told her, and they spent the rest of the weekend talking and being a family. Wes had come to terms with the fact that his and David's relationship has long since exited the Honeymoon faze. He's absolutely certain that they're going to be together for a while, according to Nick and Jeff, who say that if they can survive the honeymoon period, then things will end up working out for them very well. Kurt wasn't sure what the hell they were talking about, then again, he wasn't really paying attention either, he was more focused on what was going on in his own relationship, rather than the relationships of the others around them. Holly had enjoyed the time away as well. She got to be the five year old that she is, and not have to worry about anything else. Blaine had connected with his new adopted daughter, and even braved the sun to take her to the beach. Back home, here in their house, in Philadelphia, Kurt is content in their life right now. They don't need anything else at the moment, because they have each other. Rachel was telling them about the new nursery that Puckerman was building, and how they weren't sure what colour to paint it. Blaine suggested a mutual colour, for girls and boys, so that way, they can change it later. Kurt suggested painting it white, and Santana wondered why they were even starting it, when Rachel isn't even two months along yet...
Had they known, back when the date for Brittany and Santana's wedding was chosen, that they would be where they are now, they might have done things differently, but Kurt knows they made the right choices. Holly was asked to be the flower girl, and Olivia had thrown a tantrum, just like her mother, when Rachel told her that she wasn't the flower girl. Kurt had never been more afraid in that moment, realising that Olivia was going to grow up to be just like her mother. He was hoping she would take after Puckerman, but obviously, that's not the case. July had been a hectic month for all of them. With the Holly and Sebastian saga finally at the end, and Kurt able to finally move forward, and be happy... for the first time, he was really happy. No more happy, that when Brittany Santana came out of the dressing room, her wedding dress, holding flowers, her hair parted to one side, curled. Kurt wanted to cry with joy. He grabbed her hands, kissing her cheek, and warning her that she wasn't allowed to cry. She promised, as long as Kurt promised to tell her what was going on with him and Blaine before he told Rachel. He didn't want to spoil her day, so he told her it was for another time. Brittany was going to absolutely love Santana when she saw her in this dress. Kurt had of course, designed it for her.
'Have I ever told you, that you look absolutely gorgeous?' Kurt asked, taking his best-friend's hand once more
'No, but thanks Kurt... coming from you, that means the world,' she said, hugging him
'When you walk down that aisle today, and you take Britt's hand, you remember what I told you back in senior year... You are no more undeserving, than me. You are the light Santana... this is your day,' Kurt said, fighting back the tears
'You... are the most amazing man, friend and father in the world. I know that I wasn't always nice to you, and that it took me a long time to become this person... but it's all because of you and Holly Kurt... my niece... and my best-friend...' she said, hugging Kurt once more
At twelve noon, the ceremony was due to begin. Blaine was sitting in the row of seats second from the front, holding Brianna, and talking with Finn about their camping trip. Quinn was in helping Brittany, having been asked to step in at the last minute. Blaine had never been to a New Directions wedding... he doesn't know why they would be any different to a Warbler wedding, but from the way Rachel talks about it... they're way more into it than the Warblers would be into anything. Then again, it could just be Rachel talking... she seems to say alot of things that don't come to fruition. Finn was telling Blaine about the honeymoon, and that he and Quinn have finally come to be on common ground. Blaine tells Finn that he and Kurt have never been happier, and when Kurt appears to walk Santana up the aisle, the large smile plastered on his face, Finn doesn't for a moment, doubt that Blaine is lying to him. Brittany is standing at the altar, and the look on her face when she sees Santana... it was like someone had just handed her a million dollars. Kurt knew that would be the reaction of the blonde former cheerleader, and he knew that everyone of their friends and family members would have the same looks on their faces. Even Mr. Schuester had that look of awe on his face that he had never seen Santana look like this before. No one had really seen this side of the Latina... and prom doesn't count. Kurt knows that it should, but it doesn't. It's just not one of those things that people hold expectations to. This is different... this is the real Santana... she's not hiding behind a Neanderthal, pretending to be someone she's not. Kurt took his position as maid-(man)-of-honour for Santana, winking at Quinn who was tearing up already, and they hadn't really started yet. Brittany was holding Santana's hands, the tears in her eyes, and the smile on her face... if one wished for the perfect wedding ceremony, they could just look at Brittany and Santana, and they would see it.
Holly was standing nicely next to Quinn, holding the basket filled with flower petals in her hand. She caught her father's eye, and grinned, Kurt just smiled back, forcing himself not to cry, because he knew he would never stop. Rachel was trying to control her own daughter, who was still mad that she hadn't been picked to be the flower girl. Rachel wanted to explain to her daughter that Santana is Holly's biological mother, that's why she's up there, but figured that the five year old wouldn't really understand the situation, and chose against it. After all, if Sebastian's lawyers were to ever get wind of that, Kurt would be thrown in jail, and Sebastian would be awarded the custody he so longed for. Santana never called Holly her daughter... rather her niece. She explained to Rachel once, that she felt more like the girls aunt than her mother, but that she will always love her. Kurt promised that Santana would always have contact with her, whether or not she wanted to be involved. Brittany had been strange about it at first... given that Kurt was her dolphin, and Santana was her girlfriend... but realised soon enough that they were still the same people... and technically, neither of them cheated because they were both single... not that it would have mattered anyway. Kurt would never do anything to deliberately hurt anyone. Not even Finn when he was being annoying and doing stupid things before he and Quinn reunited. Rachel tuned back into reality just as Santana was finishing her vows, and then kissed Brittany, before being pronounced married and heading back up the aisle, calling for all to attend the reception.
'You looked amazing up there you know,' Blaine whispered in Kurt's ear as he wrapped his arm around his boyfriend's waist
'Today wasn't about me. You were meant to be watching Brittany and Santana...' Kurt replied
'Why? I'm not in love with either of them...' Blaine replied, kissing Kurt and chuckling to himself
'Fine, I forgive you. Come on, we have to beat the brides to the reception...' Kurt said, linking his hand with Blaine's, and walking slowly out of the church
The reception was so classically mixed between Santana and Brittany that you couldn't tell who designed it. It was Rachel, but obviously, over the years, she learned that other people can have special days as well, not just her. She's not the only one who can have the big parties, and have everything perfect. She's become a completely different person, especially since she got pregnant again. Puck doesn't seem to mind it either, that his wife is having another baby. In fact, he's super excited for it, and he keeps telling Finn that he and Quinn should have another baby, to which they both look at him and tell him that they just had Brianna, and they want her to have some time to just be with her mother and father before they even think of doing that. Puck understands, but then turns to Blaine, who tells him that if he mentions it to Kurt, he will, no matter what the cost, get Mercedes onto him, and he will not live to see the birth of his second child. Puck fist-bumps the newest addition to their group, and stands to get himself a beer... leaving a confused Blaine to wonder what exactly he said that impressed Puckerman enough to fist-bump him. He likes that he's been fully accepted into their "group" now. He wants to get along with Kurt's family and friends, just like he wants the Warblers to get along with Kurt. Santana and Brittany arrive to loud cheers and clapping from all their guests, and Holly runs to find Blaine, getting him to lift her up so she can see. They all take their respective seats, and the music starts, so people can dance if they wish.
Holly is sitting with Blaine, talking about school and what's going to happen now, when Mercedes approaches him, being followed by Kurt, who pulls Blaine's arm, and leads them both outside, away from the tent in the gardens, to somewhere where they won't be overheard. It's then that Mercedes pounces on Blaine, hugging him and squealing happily, telling Kurt that's she happy for them both and that she loves them both, and promises not to tell anyone until they're ready. Kurt is lost, until Blaine starts talking about the rings Kurt brought and then he's back on the same page... the engagement... they chose not to tell the others, not so close to Sanny and Britt's wedding day, they didn't want the steal their spotlight, but Kurt had brought matching engagement rings, and proposed to Blaine properly whilst they were away, to which the teacher had said yes... obviously. Mercedes is the only person who knows... Rachel is going to kill them all if she finds out that Mercedes knew before she did, but Kurt doesn't care. One look at Blaine and all that petty stuff falls away. So maybe they should have told them a week ago when they got home, before the wedding, but Kurt wanted to keep it just between them for the time being. They didn't have to tell the group everything... it's not like they're the ones who "have" to know everything. He'll probably tell Quinn and Finn before he tells his father and Carole, and then Santana and Brittany, and after that, it will be everyone else. But before they even consider telling anyone, Kurt entrusts Mercedes, that she will remain tight lipped about this, until the right time. She promises, but gives one last hug, before returning to the party.
'You knew that would happen when she found out,' Blaine said
'How did she find out? I didn't tell anyone...' Kurt replied, smirking
'I... may have been caught looking at my engagement ring, and didn't have enough time to hide it before Mercedes saw,'
'I can't exactly scold you for it. It's not like it was deliberate, and they're bound to find out, just not today... not on San and Britt's day,' Kurt said, kissing his boyfriend once, before the two also headed back to the reception.
Kurt had been thinking about it. Really, he shouldn't have, but you can't blame him. He's engaged, and this is a wedding... he's thinking about how he and Blaine aren't going to let their friends sing at their wedding, because as nice as it is to have them there, it's not... well let's say...what they want to happen on their day. No doubt Rachel will kick up a storm, and that will make the rest of the group annoyed, but really, it's kind of weird to have your guests perform as well. He thought it was strange that they did that at his father and Carole's wedding... even though it turned out to be a wonderful day. Blaine is dancing with Holly and Olivia, both laughing with the teacher. Rachel and Puckerman are dancing beside Mercedes and Sam, and Finn and Quinn are watching their friends, the new mother still holding onto her daughter, talking to Tina and Mike, who have Kelly with them. Santana catches his eye from the dance floor, where Brittany is trying to show her a new move, and winks at the man; he just winks back and takes another sip of the diet coke on the table. He's not a dancer... it's not that he can't dance, he can, very well, it's just since the accident, he hasn't danced. He doesn't know if he'd ever be able to be the dancer he was... but he's not thinking about that... he promised he wouldn't... he let all of that go long ago. The music stops, and something non-danceable comes on, making Kurt glad in a way, because it means that Blaine can't accost him to the dance floor just yet. If anyone can get him to dance again, it's Blaine and his god-damned puppy dog eyes. This was discovered during their trip, when Blaine wanted Kurt to swim with them, and the designer refused because he didn't want to go shirtless, but Blaine told him he didn't have to take his shirt off, and used those... damn eyes to do it.
It's his weakness really... Blaine's ability to get him to relent to things... Holly seems to have that flaw as well. Her papa told her to clean her room the other day, and she said no, so Blaine used the puppy dog eyes to get her to do it. She almost cried, but ran off to do it. Kurt was impressed and scared all at the same time. It must have been Puckerman who changed the song to Gangnam Style, because the cheers from all of the New Directions filled the air, and Kurt couldn't help but pull out the camera to film his fiancée and daughter dancing along. It was the best thing that had happened all night, especially when Finn tried to join in, but just ended up making a fool of himself. At least he had fun, unlike Rachel, who refused to dance to something so... well she wouldn't say vulgar... okay, she probably would, but she's pregnant, so it makes it hard as well. Kurt had never seen so many of his friends make fools of themselves at one time. Granted, they're probably half drunk, and it's a party, but still, he's not the type of person to take caution to the wind, and forget that no matter where he is, someone will always post something on the internet, and it will end up in the paper. He doesn't need the publicity. Obviously, it doesn't bother the others though, so he smiles and cheers. When they finally take a break from dancing, and Holly runs over to him, asking him to dance with her, he knows that he's done for. Until this point, his daughter has never asked him to dance, because she kind of knew, but everyone else is dancing and Kurt doesn't want to disappoint Holly, because he's seen that look in her eyes... so, reluctantly, he follows the five year old over to where Blaine is standing, and suddenly he understands why Holly was so insistent. Although why Blaine couldn't ask himself is beyond him.
'Blaine... I... I can't dance,' Kurt said, and Blaine looked at him, frowning, and then coming to the realisation
'It's a slow dance Kurt. Nothing fancy, basically it's just side to side,' Blaine replied, showing his fiancée the dance
'I haven't danced in seven years Blaine, I'm probably terrible,' Kurt replied, taking Blaine's hand, as he let the teacher guide them around the dance floor
'You could never be terrible at anything Kurt... 'Blaine replied, and smiled as Kurt rested his head on Blaine's shoulder, and let the music and Blaine guide him
They hadn't been gone that long. Santana and Brittany had left for their honeymoon, whilst the party was still continuing, and Rachel was trying to convince a partially drunk Puckerman that it was time to leave. She didn't seem to be having much luck at all, but Finn literally kicked Puckerman towards the exit, and then chuckled as Puck thought he was fighting an invisible enemy. Kurt shook his head, and grabbed Holly's bag and flowers, the sleeping girl curled up in Blaine's arms. Rachel had sent Olivia over to apologise for her attitude towards Kurt and Holly, but the five year olds didn't seem to mind that much, and ran off to play together afterwards. Kurt told Rachel that all looked to be fine, and wandered off to help Mercedes, who kept winking at him, and he knew why. He winked back, and that confused Rachel even more, which was good, because a confused Rachel is easier to deal with than one who isn't confused. Sam and Mike were talking getting the guys together for the big game on the weekend, and were thinking of having it at the Chang house, but Tina shut them down, when she mentioned that they were having their parents over, and the game wouldn't be shown whilst they were there. Of course, Blaine and Finn got in on the conversation, and the former quarterback, now record producer invited everyone to Kurt and Blaine's, without asking, to which the designer said they would have to bring their own food, and decide whether or not they wanted to risk making the mess he knew they would, or have their "boys night" in the den, where Kurt was hoping they would go anyway. Finn promised they wouldn't make a mess in the lounge, because they wanted the plasma television, and Kurt agreed, relenting, once more to that... god damned face from Blaine, who handed him Holly as they got to the car.
When Kurt woke the next morning, it was to Holly sitting on his legs, staring at him, holding her stuffed elephant that Mercedes had brought her for Christmas last year. Blaine woke up as well, rubbing his eyes, and smiling. Kurt thought he was dreaming, but tickling his daughter seemed like it would be fun, so that's what he did. Holly squealed with delight as her father tickled her, and Blaine watched, so badly wanting to snap a picture of this carefree Kurt that he had been seeing more of. But, alas, the alarm rang for them to get up, and go to work and school, to which Kurt followed Holly out of the room, to help her dress, but reappeared moments later, pulling Blaine into the bathroom and locking the door. It had surprised the teacher, and Kurt had blushed and used some excuse as to saving water, but Blaine knew better, and smirked as Kurt pulled on his suit, and headed back out to help Holly, who had managed to dress herself, but not have her hair done. Kurt likes doing Holly's hair, it's not something that one would usually find comforting, but he does for some reason. That was the Monday that their morning routines changed. Kurt was no longer in a hurry to get Holly and himself ready, because Blaine would take her to school with him, and Kurt would be there to get her at the end of the day, so Blaine could attend teacher conferences and prepare tomorrows work, before heading home himself. Kurt was working on his new line, and Quinn was back at work as his assistant, and loving it, according to the blonde receptionist when he called her this morning to check if she was still coming in.
'Okay, I have to leave. Be good for papa, and make sure you don't forget your jacket okay. It's meant to be cold later. Bye babe, I love you,' Kurt said, winking as he kissed Blaine's cheek, grabbing his coffee to go, and pulling on shoes, his jacket, and grabbing everything he needed
'I love you too Kurt,' Blaine replied, waving goodbye as Kurt smiled and headed out the door
'Papa and daddy sitting in the tree k-I-s-s-I-n-g,' Holly sing songed, and Blaine started tickling her again
'Come on chick, get your stuff we have to get going too,' Blaine said, kissing his daughter's forehead, and helping her off the chair, watching her run off to her room to get the rest of her things for school.
The day went pretty much the way Kurt thought it would. He had meetings, went over final designs for the new line, talked to Quinn about her trip, and pondered whether or not to tell her now that he and Blaine are engaged. She didn't seem to be in the best mood, hadn't been all day, snapping at people on the phone, and on more than one occasion, at Kurt. There had never been animosity between himself and his sister-in-law before, but she did have the terrible habit of putting him in the middle of her fights with Finn, so if this is what that was, then he was going to firmly stay put on all sides of the subject. There are only so many fights one can referee before they want to stab themself in the eye so they can't see the damage people are doing to their own lives. Quinn didn't say anything to Kurt when he told her she could have lunch, she just stood, and walked out of her office, towards the elevator, jabbing the button, and stepping in. Holly was supposed to go over there tonight, but Kurt doesn't know now if that's a good idea or not, considering the mood that Quinn is in. Calling his brother won't give him any answers either, he's probably as oblivious as anything. the knock on his office door was unexpected, but when he looked up to see Blaine standing in front of him, he was more surprised than anything. Holly was meant to be at school, so if Blaine isn't at school, who is taking his class? He stood, moving around to greet his fiancée, but Blaine stepped back, shaking his head, holding his hand out to stop Kurt from hugging him, and slumped into one of the white chairs opposite Kurt's desk. This is more than weird. Quinn's bad mood is rubbing off on everyone in this building, and it's starting to grate on Kurt's nerves. He's not one to get angry, but if someone doesn't explain what's going on to him soon, that's what's going to happen.
Blaine doesn't say a word, just puts his head in his hands, and sighs loudly, ignoring Kurt's question. The designer, shakes his head, and walks back to his desk, taking a seat, and resuming the sketching he was doing before he was interrupted. Two can play at whatever game this is... Blaine looks up from where he's sitting, and goes to say something, but Kurt's not looking at him, and he knows that his fiancée is pissed off right now, because his brows are furrowed, and he's sketching like the notebook has offended him or something. Quinn had called him earlier, and told him to come for lunch, the three of them would be heading out, but when he caught up with her in the lobby, her mood indicated that they wouldn't be having lunch, but she told him to go up to Kurt's office anyway. Blaine was worried about his students. He had gotten to school, and taken Holly to class, before heading to the teachers' lounge, where he had been called by the principal, to receive a citation. The parents were concerned that Holly, being in Blaine's class, and Blaine being in a relationship with Kurt, was going to affect the treatment of Holly. He wanted to tell Kurt this, but how do you just blurt out that you're suspended pending investigation? If Kurt found out, he'd probably riot or something.
'I got suspended,' Blaine said suddenly, and Kurt's head shot up from what he was drawing
'What? Why would they do that?' Kurt asked
'The parents are worried that Holly being in my class, and me being in a relationship with you, will affect the treatment of other students, compared to her. It's so ridiculous,' Blaine said
'Did you explain to them that it won't? Do I need to get lawyers in, because that's ridiculous Blaine? They can't do that to you,' Kurt said, standing and moving so he could pull Blaine into a hug
'Apparently, they can. At least they suspended me with pay,' Blaine said, and they both chuckled, not letting the other go.
So he was satisfied that Blaine wasn't hiding things from him anymore, they spent their lunch break talking about the suspension, and making out... of course, what else, but he still didn't know why Quinn was in a bad mood, and when she came back after lunch, she didn't seem to be bothered by it anymore. It was a good thing, Kurt thought, but then again, nothing ever stays calm around them for too long.
A/N: Next Chapter: Kurt and Blaine come to the realisation that the honeymoon period in their relationship is over, before it's basically began, when the start fighting all the time. Wes and David suggest going away, just the two of them, and Kurt thinks that's a wonderful idea. Blaine hears back from the teachers at Haverbrooke Prep about his job, and Quinn reveals to Kurt why she's been so shitty lately. Santana and Brittany return from their honeymoon with news that could change their lives forever, and Blaine begins work with Finn on his album he's been recording in his down time. The Warblers return! Thanks, and enjoy. JusticeIsn'tEasy0083. D.
