A/N: Hello. This chapter went a little differently than I had first planned it to be. Now, before you start reading, I just want to let you all know that events that occur in this chapter, have actually happened to a friend of mine in real life, so if you think that I don't know what I'm talking about, I guarantee you, that I do. So, now that's out of the way, here's the newest chapter... with a major cliffhanger. I love doing that! I know, it's cruel, but it keeps you reading ;). Thanks for reading. Thank you to all of you who review. I love knowing that people are enjoying this story. JusticeIsn'tEasy0083. D.
Chapter Seventeen: Honeymoon, Oh Honeymoon
It had been something small at first. Wes had been at their house, and he, as always, was making a mess in the house. Kurt didn't mind at first, but lately, every little thing was annoying him. He had snapped at Holly earlier, for not taking her shoes off at the door, even though he knew she would do it. Blaine had been worried that Kurt was always cranky, and made a joke that maybe he should go and talk to Quinn, given that they both seemed to be in a bad mood lately. But Kurt didn't find that very funny, in fact, it was the unfunniest thing he'd heard in a long while, and when Blaine realised that he wasn't laughing, he knew this was going to end in a fight. They had been having a lot of those lately, none so big that one of them had stormed out, but it was only matter of time. He loves Kurt, and he would never leave, he promised, but that doesn't mean that Kurt won't be the one who walks out the door. Usually, they just go into separate rooms, and deal with it, but it's been different lately. Even Holly can sense there is something wrong between her parents. She's astute for her age, and when she sees her father and papa not talking to one another, she hopes they're not going to leave, because she doesn't want that. She loves her family just like this, minus the fighting. Kurt doesn't want to fight with Blaine either, and he knows that nothing is anyone's fault, these things happen, but he's been having a rough couple of weeks at work, with the press, and the legal case that he's only just found out about, and now Finn and Quinn fighting... it's beginning to grate on his nerves. Sometimes he wishes he could be on a deserted island, where nothing can bother him, but it would be awfully lonely.
Taking Blaine's advice, Kurt had told them he was going to the supermarket to get some things for dinner, even though they have plenty of food in the fridge. Blaine wouldn't be surprised if he drove to Quinn's house and talked to her like he suggested, even though saying that to Kurt would only lead to a fight at the moment. He surprised himself though, when he pulled up at the Hudson house, and Finn was carrying his daughter out to the car, telling Kurt as he walked up the drive that he was taking bubs for a drive whilst mommy "calmed down". Kurt thought it the perfect opportunity to go and talk to his sister in law. Quinn was moving around the kitchen, banging things and deliberately making loud noises. When Kurt made himself known, he just missed a plate flying at his head, having time to duck as it smashed against the wall behind him. Quinn quickly ran over to Kurt, apologising as the designer knelt down to help her clean things up, asking if that made her feel better. She chuckled and smiled, taking the broken shards of glass over to the trash and turning so she could face Kurt. He would never take away the opportunity for Quinn to have out her emotions, and he doesn't know why he's all of a sudden decided to just pick random fights with Blaine, but maybe they both need to talk. Quinn grabbed a bottle of wine, and two glasses, and they moved into the lounge, taking a seat on the floor and watching the TV, which had been left on by Finn, who was in a hurry to get out of the house. They didn't talk for a while, but sooner or later, they would be drunk enough to voice their opinions. This is really why Kurt doesn't drink, but he's not working tomorrow, so he doesn't really care. Quinn seems glad too that Finn too Brianna out of the house for a while, she finally gets to just have a break.
It was late afternoon when Finn arrived home with Brianna and Blaine, who had come over to check on Kurt. The two men were surprised at what they saw, Quinn and Kurt playing some weird game, drunk as anything, laughing at whatever they thought was funny on the TV. Quinn spotted her husband first, and ran over to him, hugging him tightly, and laughing when he just looked at her like she was a mad woman. Kurt, on the other hand, didn't seem as enthusiastic as Quinn, meagerly watching the interaction between the blonde woman and his brother. Blaine, to be honest, was a little scared. He had never seen Kurt dunk, mostly because the designer had a reputation to uphold, and couldn't be seen doing anything that could harm the custody hearing, but here, inside this house, there isn't anything that anyone can see, obviously, they've interrupted chat time though, because Quinn is pawing at Finn, who is trying to get her upstairs, so Blaine can talk to Kurt. Or take him home, because the designer doesn't look like he's going to be able to last much longer. Quinn laughs childishly as Finn drags her upstairs, and Blaine walks over to Kurt, who stands, spreading his arms out to regain his balance, grabbing Blaine's shoulder when the man is close enough. It's a different sight, seeing Kurt drunk and carefree, but also wondering if this has anything to do with their fighting all the time.
'You know Kurt, you've had me worried about you all afternoon, and you've been here with Quinn, getting drunk,' He said, as Kurt smiled cheekily, following him towards the front door.
'Mmmhmm... You shouldn't be wo-rried about me Blaine... I'm only with... Quinny and... What am I saying?' Kurt asked, as the fresh air hit him and he stood up a little straighter
'I don't know what you're saying baby, but I'm taking you home. Can you walk, or do you want me to drive?' Blaine asked, acknowledging Kurt's car out the front of the house
'It's fifty million blocks... we should drive Blainey,' Kurt said, pulling the teacher's arm over to the car, as Blaine helped him into the back seat, away from him so nothing would cause an accident
Kurt almost tripped when he got in the front door, Holly hadn't put her shoes away, and was looking at her father, as though she was about to be yelled at, and Blaine was trying to hide the laughter that was threatening to overflow when Kurt kind of just looked at Holly, tilting his head, and heading upstairs, without saying another word. Holly shrugged, grabbed her shoes, and followed her parents upstairs into her room. Blaine found Kurt, sprawled on their bed, face down, mumbling something about 'regretting drunk' and 'stupid alcohol'. He had to laugh, causing Kurt to roll over and throw a pillow at him, which he caught, and threw back at his fiancée, who pouted. Blaine knew that it was just because he was drunk, but he couldn't help be seduced by Kurt, and curled up beside him, running his fingers through Kurt's hair. They didn't make out, Kurt knew that if something happened and he didn't remember, it would kill him, because he would never want to do that to Blaine, so they just lie there, Kurt dozing in and out of sleep, all the time, the knowing that they had to talk about whatever was going on was hanging over them. Eventually, Blaine fell asleep as well. It was almost four hours later when Holly wondered into the room, and jumped on both of her parents, sending Kurt into the bathroom, and Blaine almost sprawling off the bed. Holly just kept apologising, hugging Blaine, who had been having a wonderful dream about being married to Kurt and being happy, past whatever this fight is that they're having. When Kurt came out of the bathroom, he stopped at the sight of his daughter and fiancée talking to each other on the bed. He could feel the tears springing to his eyes, and he knew that sooner or later, he would have to talk to Blaine about what he told Quinn. That had kind of helped, talking to his sister-in-law. It made him able to word it correctly when it comes to talking to Blaine. He couldn't resist snapping a picture of the two on the bed, winking when they looked up at the flash, and then Holly called him over, and Kurt returned to his previous position, beside Blaine, Holly in the middle.
It was only nine pm when Kurt and Blaine decided to go to bed. Holly had been so tired from the day that she had gone to be at eight, and Kurt and Blaine decided they should talk. Blaine was absolutely sure that this was going to be the right thing for them to do, because they can't keep bouncing around one another, and fighting all the time, it's draining, and not good for Holly. Sure, it's healthy to fight, but not the way that he and Kurt have been lately. Picking at the smallest things and finding reasons to turn them into arguments. Neither of them wanted to come to the very real understanding that the reason they're fighting all the time, is because the honeymoon period in their relationship is over. They're engaged, they've been together almost six months, they have a daughter, job pressures, friends and family, but they haven't had any time to just have their relationship. Not since they got together. They were bombarded with Sebastian and the court case and it was one thing after another. Blaine listened as Kurt told him that he felt as though they weren't communicating the way they should be, and he knows that it's partly his fault, and partly Blaine's fault. Blaine agreed, and claimed that they need to talk more, like they are now, but without arguing. If they have a problem, they need to work it out, not shout it out. Kurt had to laugh at the cheesiness of Blaine's statement, but nodded in agreement. The effects of the alcohol were still affecting Kurt, because he looked very pale, and Blaine wanted to point that out, that he's never seen his Kurt like this, but he doesn't. Because they're talking, and Kurt tells him that he's afraid. He's never been more afraid of what they have now, because he doesn't ever want to lose it, or Blaine... he wouldn't survive if he lost another person that he loves the most. Blaine stood up from the bed, pulling Kurt into a tight hug, kissing his passionately, telling him that he's never leaving, and proving it, by grabbing their engagement rings. Kurt took his and put it on, and Blaine did the same. They would tell the others later, but for right now, tonight, it's just their time. Kurt raised an eyebrow, and Blaine smirked pulling his fiancée over to the bed.
Kurt curled up to Blaine, both still naked from their recent love making session, and apologized for getting drunk with Quinn, to which Blaine chuckled and told Kurt that he was adorable when he's drunk. The designer whacked him, but kissed him to show that he's not really mad. Blaine wrapped his arms around Kurt, and smiled when Kurt nuzzled his head under his chin, the warmth filling both of their bodies to the core. Through the silence, Blaine's cell buzzed with a message, causing the teacher to groan, and sit up to reach the bedside table for his phone. He was shocked to see the message was from his boss at Haverbrooke. He hadn't heard from them since his suspension last week. Kurt kissed his shoulder, standing to go into the bathroom, lingering a little longer so Blaine could stare, winking and dialing the number of the recipient who had just left the message. He had spoken to Finn about it earlier, and given that the Hudson's didn't have any children that age, they couldn't really be a parental voice, but they would back Blaine no matter what. He had thanked the man, and promised to repay the favour should Finn ever need it. That was before he had walked in on his drunken fiancée, but the moment he shared with his future brother-in-law was nice. He liked to think that he and the rest of the New Directions would start to get along better. Even Wes had started to get along better with Kurt, and for that, he was thankful. The voice on the other end of the phone sounded tired, and Blaine hoped he hadn't woken the man, but he didn't seem bothered by the call. Blaine listened to the man talk about his week, before he asked the question he was desperate to know the answer to.
'Sir, I need to know if I still have a job,' Blaine said into the phone, rather agitated
'Of course you still have a job Blaine. I expect you back on Monday morning. Those parents are vultures, but I've talked to them,' Principal Carr said, chuckling
'Thank you sir, I'm looking forward to getting back to my class. They're wonderful children, all of them, including my daughter,' Blaine said, the large smile that filled his face at the words lifting his mood immediately, saying goodbye and hanging up the phone
'Blaine... I love you,' Kurt said from the doorway to the ensuite, smiling and Blaine knew that he'd heard, pulling the man into a hug
Santana was walking through the airport, carrying twice the luggage than she could manage. Somehow, she knew it was pointless; they couldn't very well leave any of it behind. Kurt had text her, explaining that he, Holly and Blaine would be there to pick them up, and that they had some news. She was excited to see all of her friends again, especially Kurt and Blaine. Quinn had called her, explaining that their honeymoon period was over, and Santana could be on the same page as them. Her honeymoon had ended as well, now she's home, back in Philadelphia, waiting for her best-friend to arrive and pick her up. In the back of her mind, she knows she should probably tell them all what's going on, but she needs to understand it herself first. She needs to understand why all of this is happening, and how the hell it could be happening. What on earth had they done to warrant the kind of treatment she was currently experiencing? When Kurt pulled up, she had worked herself up so much, she broke down in the man's arms, sinking to the ground, Kurt with her, hugging her and looking up at Blaine who was as surprised as he was. Brittany wasn't with her, obviously Santana hadn't mentioned that little facet to this whole thing, but this wasn't like newly married woman to break down at the airport on return from her honeymoon. Sure, they know what it's like to have that period end, but this doesn't seem like something ordinary for Santana. She seems really broken about something. Holly kneels down to hug her aunt, and Santana clings to her, whilst Kurt stands to talk to Blaine. Santana is whispering something to the six year old, who just nods and hugs her again, before standing and helping Santana to her feet. Blaine takes her hand and hugs her too, asking her what the matter is, but she shakes her head, not wanting to talk about it here, and grabs all the bags she can manage, following Kurt out to the car.
The ride back to the Lopez-Pierce residence is silent. No one says anything, only the sounds of Beyonce on the radio fill the void. Kurt is beginning to freak out. Santana is a mess, Brittany is nowhere to be seen, and there are too many things playing in his head for him to think straight. Blaine tells Santana that he is starting back at work on Monday, which she says is good, and that he should never have been suspended in the first place, and the two talk in depth about the whole event the rest of the way back to the house. When Kurt pulls into the drive, Santana gets out of the car, and moves around to help Kurt with the bags, but he just pulls her inside and tells her to talk, because he's a little freaked out about what's happening, and he wants to know where Brittany is. The Latina woman sits down, head in her hands, tears filling her eyes again, and she tries to stop herself, but she can't. Kurt pours her a glass of water, and places it on the table for her, leaving the room momentarily to grab some tissues, kissing Blaine, who is standing in the kitchen door, watching her. They both sit down at the table, Holly in the lounge watching cartoons so they can talk. Santana just sits there for a while, staring at the ring on her finger, and wanting so much to tell Kurt that she knows they're engaged, she caught sight of Blaine's engagement ring, but she knows he wants to tell her, so she doesn't ruin the surprise. It's about fifteen minutes of silence, and the sniffles from the Latina, before she looks up at the two men sitting before her. Kurt is her best-friend, he knows better than anyone, what it's like to lose someone you love, or have something heart-breaking happen, which is what makes this so hard to talk about, but she tries to anyway.
'Brittany and I went to Italy for our honeymoon, as a gift from all of you guys, and it was the most romantic thing in the world. We spent two weeks there, seeing all the sites, and speaking really bad Italian. It was fantastic, until about nine this morning,' Santana said, and Kurt tried to factor in time differences, but his mind was still being his worst enemy
'What happened Santana, where's Britt?' Kurt asked, taking her hand
'We got to the Siena-Ampugnano airport in Siena and checked our bags. Britt and I hadn't really brought anything because we didn't want to pay duty on the way back through. One of the officers at the airport, who spoke English, came over to us and told me that Britt's passport wasn't valid; she couldn't get on the plane. It was a mess. She was absolutely certain that she had renewed it before we left, but when we got it back to check, it had expired. She got stuck at the airport, because she couldn't fly, and then arrested, because our visa didn't allow us to be in the country any longer. She's in prison in Italy, and I told her I would fly home to sort things out. She needs a visa and a new passport, and I have to call the embassy,' Santana said, and Kurt couldn't believe what he was hearing
'Don't worry Sanny; I'll get my lawyers to sort it out. They can't hold her there, she's an American citizen. I'll contact the embassy in Italy. I'll fly over there if I have to,' Kurt said, kissing her forehead, and moving into the hall to call his lawyers.
Kurt and Blaine headed home at about five, and Kurt immediately disappeared into the study to call his lawyers. He's not a political figure, but he can certainly give the Italian authorities an earful to get Brittany home. Santana promised them she would be okay being by herself, until Kurt returns there tomorrow. If he has to fly to Italy, then he will. He's not going to let his best-friend's wife rot in prison, when the American Embassy isn't going to do anything to help. That's strange, because Britt's should be covered by them. She is an American citizen... Blaine was helping Holly with her school bag. She had been taking things to school that her fill in teacher didn't like, but Blaine couldn't see any problems with them. Of course, if he said that out loud, people would accuse him of favouritism. Then again, Holly has been less upbeat and cheerful since she got home from school on Friday. Kurt thought that she might be getting sick, but Blaine thinks it might be something completely different. The young girl takes her time putting her things away, not talking to Blaine, who is sitting on her bed, holding her books and things, whilst she moves to put them away, one at a time. He asks her what's going on, but she doesn't reply, moving out of the room, into the hallway, to get her coat, before returning to the room, continuing her previous activity. It was only when Kurt entered the room to see what his daughter was doing, that she perked up and started happily chatting to Kurt, who frowned, worried. She's usually always chatting Blaine's ear off about anything and everything. Them being in the same room and silent... that's a worrying concept. Kurt moves over to the bed, and calls Holly over to join them. They have enough to worry about without adding Haverbrooke Prep to their list.
'What's going on Holl? Why aren't you talking to papa?' Kurt asked, sitting on the bed beside Blaine, lifting Holly onto his knees
'People is saying bad things about you's two,' she whispered, but Blaine knew immediately what she was on about
'Sweetie, people are always going to say bad things about us. It's just how the world works. What I want you to understand is that no matter what they say, we love you just as much as the other parents love their children. In fact, we love you more. Don't worry about what they say,' Blaine replied, kissing Holly's forehead
'I'm glad that papa is coming back. I don't like Ms. Barnes,' Holly replied, hugging Blaine and Kurt tightly, before jumping off the bed to wash her face.
2 Weeks Later
Unbeknownst to Kurt and Blaine, the Warblers had organised a holiday for them, as well as an engagement party. Santana had been a part of the whole thing, convincing the Warblers to send them to Italy, to deal with the whole Brittany thing. The blonde woman had been returned to America three days ago, after spending almost three weeks in Italy, in a detention centre. Kurt had called the American embassy, and they had overnighted a passport to the newly married woman, calling the Italian's to explain the situation to them. Kurt had pretended that he hadn't a hand in the whole thing, but really, the honest truth if you asked Santana, was that he was the mastermind behind the whole thing. She's happy, she has Brittany back in her arms, and her family back together, all of the terrible stuff behind them. But, to thank them, she had teamed up with the Warblers to organise all of these things, and kept it from Kurt and Blaine. Holly, also knew what was going on, and giggled when her father raised an eyebrow at her, smirking and chasing her around the lounge of their house, hiding behind Wes, in order to catch the five-year old off guard. Blaine had watched the scene unfold, and when David came over to him and told him that most of it had been Wes' doing, he hugged the man, knowing that it meant alot for them to finally accept that Kurt isn't going anywhere, and that the designer is the person who makes Blaine happy. Why Wes didn't realise it earlier, if beyond both of them, but regardless of the past, they're going to make the most of their Italian trip, even if Kurt doesn't really feel like going to the country where his best-friend's wife was held. It's the sad, but political truth. Santana had practically forced them to leave Holly with her and Brittany, whilst they went away. Finn was a little hesitant to let his brother go to the country that held Brittany for three weeks, but Kurt told him that it won't happen to them, to which Quinn had scoffed and informed them that's probably what the girls thought too.
There was the threat of getting held there, but also, Finn was a little annoyed that Blaine had chosen now to take off to Italy, right when they had just started recording Blaine's first album. Finn is a record producer for Hudmel, Lopez and Co, he's the best in the country at the moment, and Blaine had been thrilled when Finn announced that he had some spare time and a studio that wasn't being used if he wanted to "lay a couple of tracks down". The teacher had jumped at the chance, spending weekends recording, and trying to juggle marking school work, and planning classes. Kurt thought his fiancée was going to explode with all the work he's been doing, but he's come to be able to manage it pretty well. Besides, it's not like Kurt doesn't work alot either, and there's always the chance that one of them is going to get sick, and need the other one to pick up the slack. Their friends seem to be helping them through most of the harder things, like Quinn had spoken to Blaine the other day about their "dark day" as they had taken to calling their getting blatantly drunk in the middle of the day. It was a thing they could laugh about now, but becoming a mother had changed Quinn from the lovely kind woman she used to be, to the same woman, running on three hours sleep, with a busy husband and a almost two month old child. Kurt understood what it was like to be a single parent, but added that he didn't blame Santana for it, and she winked at him, knowing that Kurt didn't mean it in the way other people might have thought he did. Besides, their mistake brought into the world the most perfect little girl ever created (although if you asked Finn, he'd deny it and say his daughter is the cutest... he's probably right but Holly comes in a close second). Kurt was still throwing things into their bag at nine that night, and Blaine caught him in a rare moment, when he was in sweats and a t-shirt, staring at their bag open on their bed, like it was an evil entity or something. Blaine wrapped his arms around Kurt's waist from behind, and they just stayed like that for a moment...
It was the morning of their post-engagement-engagement party. Kurt had to chuckle when Puckerman had mentioned that he and Wes had come up with the name, which in their minds was shortened to its initials... P.E.E. It was somehow hilarious to them, but Kurt couldn't find the humour in it, simply smiling and walking off, pretending that he's interested in whatever they're talking about, or which outfit would better suit Rachel now that she's starting to show, or how Quinn is going about losing her baby weight, because for some reason, Tina just can't seem to shed her last few pounds. It's like they've finally landed in the realm or normalcy... they talk about normal things, they do normal things, and it's like they weren't able to see it until now. But there's something about the calm before the storm that really makes Kurt dread moments like this. Moments or normalcy, always lead to chaos, and of course, that chaos makes everything else seem like a small hill, rather than the mountain it usually turns out to be. They've had enough dramas already this year, to last them, and it's not even May. The moment the storm hit, he knew it would be all downhill from there, it would end in a fight, or a break-up or something equally as terrible. They had just decided on what food they would have, when Santana appeared in the lounge door, followed by a police man and another guy in a suit. Everyone was confused, nothing was making sense to any of them... then, like he knew it would, everything came crashing down around them...
'Kurt Hummel and Finn Hudson?' the police guy asked, and Finn moved over to stand beside Kurt, who was holding Blaine's hand tightly
'Yeah, that's us. Can we help you officers?' Finn asked, looking between both men
'We're sorry to be the ones to have to tell you this, but your parents were admitted to Philly Gen a couple of hours ago, head on collision on the entrance to the city. We'd like you both to accompany us to the hospital, we have questions,' the guy in the suit said, and everyone just stared at the brothers, neither of them making any effort to move, when they finally did, it was a mad rush, all of their friends would be going with them
'They're going to be alright Kurt... they have to be,' Finn said, as he and Kurt climbed into the back of the large SUV, which was better than the police car, which would garner enough press as it is...
