A/N: Hello. It's been a looooooong time. Almost three months since my last update. Sorry about that. I moved house and then Uni got so busy... But, I hope this makes up for it. This is the penultimate chapter. I'm not sure if i'm going to do an epilogue. It really depends on how many people still read this story, and how many people read this chapter. I hope you like this chapter. If I can, I'll try to give an update on whether or not I'll be posting an epilogue later on. But for now, I hope that you like this chapter, and feel free to review. I know it will make me feel all fuzzy and warm inside. Thanks. JusticeIsn'tEasy0083. D.
Chapter Twenty-Two: The World Around Us
For all the waiting, landing at the airport and getting off the plane, was anti-climactic. Kurt noticed that all of the Warblers had taken over the airport waiting room, and Wes cheered when he saw them heading down the walkway. Rachel was about six months pregnant, and looked radiant, Quinn had grown her hair back to its normal length, Puck had decided to go back to the Mohawk, Santana and Brittany had both had highlights put through their blonde and black locks, and in the far corner, Kurt could see his brother, who hadn't really done anything to his hair, but was holding Brianna, and smiling, tickling her and cooing along. She was almost eight months old, and soon she'd be talking and walking, and then she'd never shut up. Blaine was holding Holly's hand, the young girl still talking animatedly about how awesome their holiday was, but the minute she saw her aunts, she was shouting to them, and Kurt swore all the heads in the airport were looking at them, and not only were they just normal people, but from the corner of his eye, Kurt could see cameras. He's glad that TMZ are in LA and not Philadelphia. Rachel was the first one to grab hold of Kurt, and squeeze him tightly, noting that he looked a little tanned and felt more toned, he just winked at her, and moved to hug his brother, and then Mercedes, before Brittany and Santana literally jumped on him and hugged him. Blaine was chuckling, talking with some of the Warblers, who were invited to Puck's welcome home party they were hosting. Kurt shook his head... typical Puckerman's... always looking for some occasion to throw a party... Kurt thought, winking at his husband, and daughter. They exited the airport together, Finn offering to drive the Hummel-Anderson's home. Kurt thanked him, and helped Holly and Quinn into the car, hoping the six-year-old would be asleep by the time they got back to the house.
Unfortunately, Holly was still wide awake and talking when they got back to the Puckerman house. Kurt took a moment to help Quinn out of the car, and grabbed a couple of bags, before following Rachel and Finn up the drive. Holly ran straight past him, following Santana up to the front porch, and disappearing into the house. Kurt and Blaine just laughed, and joined hands, laughing when Finn and Puck tried to set up the table in the hall, and it collapsed, sending everything flying. The first thing Kurt noticed, were the boxes stacked neatly in one corner of the room. Blaine had gone after Holly, who was running amok with Olivia in the kitchen, so Kurt was left alone to look at the empty room in front of him. We can't live here forever Kurt... that's what Rachel had told him a couple of weeks ago when she text him saying they'd brought their new house in New York. He knew it was stupid to worry about it, that his friends have as much right to be happy anywhere in the world. But a part of him wishes they would remain in Philly, like they'd all planned... to live near one another. Mike and Tina, and Artie and his wife had even managed to come down for the party. Brittany found Kurt, standing by the threshold to the kitchen, watching Finn, Rachel and Puck as they filled drinks, talking and laughing. She had gotten a job at Dancerama, and was in the middle of showing Kurt some moves, when Santana wolf whistled at her wife, winking at Kurt before whisking the blonde away. The only normal thing about coming home is that he can take back control of the company. Quinn is, apparently, happy to hand them back. In the den, music starts playing, and Kurt hears Sam, Mercedes and Tina shout something to the others; he follows the noise, and finds his brother and Puck playing a challenge round of Guitar Hero... typical!
FLASHBACK
London, England
Holly woke them up that morning, bright and early. She had been practicing talking in a British accent since they had gotten off the plane yesterday. Kurt had tried to stop her, but Blaine told him to let her go, that no one will be offended by an innocent six year old just playing around. Kurt isn't so sure. Sometimes, people get offended over the stupidest things. They hadn't really talked about what they were going to do when they first arrived, so today they would just wonder around, and look at things, maybe take a trip to a winery or something. Blaine had never been to London before, he hasn't even really been out of America, and so this is an experience in itself for him. Kurt just chuckled when Blaine had told him he hadn't left the United States. Holly was basically pulling them along the street, wanting to look at everything, and talking a million miles an hour. Blaine chuckled when Holly saw someone drive pass, and turned to look at her father with that 'what-the-hell' look. It was a little funny, not that the young girl saw it that way. At noon, Kurt, Blaine and Holly headed to the winery for a tour and lunch. Holly was amazed that there were so many people, and grapes, and was intrigued to learn that is how they make the wine, that her father's and all the adults she knows, sometimes drink. They didn't spend much of the day at the winery, Blaine had booked them in to see a show at the theatre, and they had to get back and get ready for it.
London was a nice place. Kurt had been there once before, when he had first started his fashion line, to meet with a model, who had been hired to showcase the first ever opening show in New York's fashion week. He had spent a month in London, trying to convince her to do it, and in the end, all he had to do was be her friend, and she did the show. He was telling Blaine this story on the way to the theatre, taking a photo of Holly in her dress as she stepped out of the car, and ran up the stairs, whilst Kurt and Blaine just linked arms and followed behind. They were going to see a noir film; apparently it's very popular in London, put on by the drama majors from Oxford University. Blaine read the reviews, and apparently they were raving, but Kurt didn't have a chance to see if he was telling the truth, because the paper had mysteriously disappeared from their hotel room, before Kurt could see it. But, Blaine promised that it was suitable for a six year old, and that they would enjoy it. Kurt had doubts, but went along with his husband, sometimes you have to compromise... Regardless, Kurt promised himself he would try to enjoy it, knowing that he has to do some things for the both of them now, rather than just for himself. He has to learn to either like, or tolerate the same things as Blaine. Holly was still excited, not sitting still in her seat, bouncing up and down before the show started, and excitedly clapping her hands. Kurt smile at her, and handed her the bag she had brought with her to hold. She was very intrigued by the stage, and when the lights went down, didn't make another peep.
PRESENT DAY
Six Years Later
They had decided, a couple of years ago, that they wanted to adopt another child, but of course, their work had made them busy and with everything that had happened two years ago, Kurt was still weary of trying to adopt another child. Blaine, on the other hand, wanted nothing more than to have a large family, even if it meant going back to surrogacy. Brittany and Santana had been visiting them for a week, so their house was a mess, but Holly wasn't helping, the twelve year old, just walking around, showing her cousin her dolls and toys and how she and Olivia had been doing in school. Rachel and Noah had moved back to Philadelphia, when they both realised that the futures they wanted in New York, were just pipe dreams, and that their true family is here in Philadelphia. Brianna, who was six years old, and still influenced by things, had taken to playing with dolls, in the middle of the kitchen floor, which Quinn and Finn seemed to find funny, but that Kurt did not. Mercedes and Sam had come back to Philly, specifically for Holly's twelfth birthday, but weren't staying at the Hummel-Anderson residence; they had gotten a hotel room, even though Kurt said they were welcome to stay there. He knows why though, ever since Rachel and Mercedes' falling out two years ago, they haven't been able to be in the same room. Kurt wishes they would drop the whole thing, they're in their thirties, they're not back in highschool anymore, and there are no excuses. Finn and Quinn have two children now, Brianna, who is six, and her brother Callum, who is four. Finn was absolutely thrilled when Quinn told him they were having a boy. He loves Brianna, but now he has someone to throw the ball around with. He's a very hands-on father; it makes it easy for Quinn to work, whilst Finn stays home, and works from there.
It has become a tradition that every year they would all come together for an occasion, whether it be Christmas, a birthday or even New Years Eve. Rachel and Puck had become the instigators of this tradition, calling and emailing and making sure that everyone knew every single detail. Sometimes it was annoying, but Kurt didn't mind, so long as people showed up, he wouldn't care. But he can smile about all those things now. He's got a good life. He has Blaine and Holly, and his friends and family, and isn't that all someone can ask for? A good life and an even better family? Along with Brittany and Santana, Mike and Tina had come back to Philly for Holly's birthday, and brought with them Artie and his wife Laura, and Will and Emma, who they still refer to as Mr and Mrs Schuester, even though they're all in their thirties. Maybe it's just easier to see them as their teachers, rather than their adult friends, because it would be creepy to be close friends with your highschool glee club teacher and guidance Councillor right? Kurt laughed when Finn was scolded by Emma for eating food before they were sitting down, and cringed, smiling and laughing with Mr Schuester, when he exclaimed loudly that they haven't changed at all. Kurt would have argued with that statement, because some of them have changed alot. For example, he never used to be able to think that anything good would happen, that he was doomed to remain his highschool self forever, but then he met Blaine, and got his life back, and because of his husband, he's a different person. He didn't say anything, but the look Mr Schue gave him made him think he knew what Kurt was thinking. Holly was telling Schuester all about her Glee Club at her school, and he was animatedly listening as she spoke.
'They're not as good as dad's glee club, no one will ever be better than that' Holly said
'I think a Glee Club is only as good as it's strongest lead, but that they also have to rely on the other members of the club to make it spectacular,' William said, smiling
'Aunt Rachel tells me all the time that I have to want to be the best, in order to achieve the best,'
'I hate to admit it, but your Aunt Rachel is right Holly. You can't be the best of everything, but you can strive to do your best in everything that you attempt. No one person is better than another,' William said, earning a smile from Kurt and a wink from Rachel, who then laughed at Holly's grin
It takes alot, to overcome something. A tragedy isn't a thing you just automatically get over. You have to be able to fully let it go and move on. Rachel and Kurt meet up with one another every week or so, when she comes down from New York, and they talk. About their lives, their families, what they have missed out on since the other has been gone. There was a point in his life, a few years ago, when Kurt would have rathered that Rachel wasn't a part of his life that she and Puck would have stayed in New York, so that he wouldn't have to deal with the pain that had been caused back then. But there's also a part of him that's glad he's had Rachel for his whole life, part of him that's glad Rachel was there for him, to lead him to Blaine, and then to the life that he has now. He knows that Rachel isn't solely the one to thank, it was mostly him, but she was the driving force behind being annoying enough, to push him into doing something that would take him out of his comfort zone. He likes that Rachel has the ability to push him to do something he wouldn't otherwise do. Blaine seems to have picked up that ability as well, but sometimes that goes against him. It's almost dark outside; the sounds of the traffic through Philadelphia can be heard in the distance. For some reason, it's calming to Kurt, hearing all the traffic driving along the road in the distance, unlike being in Lima, where the only traffic you get, is the loud trucks that drive through the streets. Blaine is the one who finds him, drinking a beer, sitting on the chair on their back porch, looking out over the horizon. Kurt chuckles to himself...Blaine always knows where to find me he thinks to himself, and he knows his husband can read his thoughts, because he says it out loud
'I always know where to find you Kurt,'
'Indeed you do. It would be a terrible idea if I was to walk out on you, because you know exactly where I would go,' Kurt replied, smirking and winking at his husband
'You would never leave me Kurt, and I would never leave you,' Blaine replied, taking the designers hands
'Hey, I know the two of you like it out here, but Santana has something to tell you,' Brittany said, as Kurt and Blaine headed back inside where everyone was gathered around in the lounge
FLASHBACK
July 2013
Holly had been excited about getting on the planet to fly home to Philadelphia. To be honest, Kurt was kind of excited too. As much as he loves Europe, he loves their home even better. He's excited to go back to work, excited to go back to designing clothes, and even excited to see his brother and Rachel. Blaine took his time, gathering their bags and leaving the hotel. Kurt could tell that his husband was lagging so that they would miss their flight and have to stay another night. As much as he wanted to leave everything in Philadelphia behind, move to Amsterdam, or London, he knew that he couldn't. He has a commitment to his friends and family, and he can't be that far away from his father. Besides, they have all their lives to live somewhere other than their home. They waited for their plane in the VIP lounge at London's Heathrow Airport; Holly was asleep, curled up to Kurt, who had his head resting on Blaine's shoulder. Blaine was reading a magazine, about what though, Kurt couldn't really tell, and he was too tired to ask, or even acknowledge it. As terrible as the waiting is the two day flight back home is even worse. He would have taken the private jet, but he'd promised Santana that she could have it for her meeting in Paris, for Hudmel-Lopez and Co's introduction to Paris Fashion Week. It would be the first time his line was going somewhere other than Italy. He had put Santana in charge, because Quinn had the baby, and Rachel and Puck were moving and Mercedes had a movie that she was going to Columbia to shoot. The only other person he trusts in his company, is his partner. Besides, Santana will get things done, because she's fierce and people are afraid of her. It's one of her best traits... well Kurt thinks so anyway.
Two hours later, when they're on the plane, preparing for take-off, Blaine grabs his hand, squeezing tightly. They hadn't had this problem on the way to London; Blaine had lied to him and told him that he loved flying. Kurt saw right through it, but played along. Now it was impossible for Blaine to hide the fact that he hates planes. Kurt just squeezed back, smiling and chuckling when he saw Holly grab Blaine's other hand, and grin, her white teeth showing. Somewhere between take-off, and hearing shouting, Kurt had fallen asleep. They were due to land back in Philly on Tuesday, and according to his phone, it was Monday night. The man in the row two up from them was having an argument with one of the flight attendants, who for what it's worth, was taking it better than expected. He was very irritated, and Kurt made a remark to Blaine that this is why he prefers taking the private jet, rather than flying First-Class on a domestic airline. Blaine smiled at him, letting the book he was reading fall open on his lap when the man stood up suddenly, and followed the hostess up the aisle. She was flustered, Kurt could tell, so he did the only other thing he could think of... he and the man in the row over from them each restrained the man, one on either side of his arms. The guy did everything he could to get out of the grip, but Kurt and the other guy, whose name he discovered was Greg, held on. Blaine didn't want to see Kurt get hit by this guy, who was bigger than him, and obviously has no time for people like them. He sheltered the scene from Holly, who was too pre-occupied with what was happening on her TV screen, than what her father was doing... thirty-thousand feet in the air.
'Sir, I need you to calm down, and stop harassing this hostess. We're thirty-thousand feet in the air, and still have almost twelve hours before we land. You need to calm down, there's nothing anyone can do from here,' Greg said, as the hostess moved to the cockpit to get the co-pilot.
'This is ridiculous. Let me go, I seriously mean it. I'm not going to calm down, until I get what I want,'
'What is it that you want? You seem to be very hung up on this whole 'getting something' thing you have going on, so please, enlighten us,' Kurt said, and Blaine cringed, hoping that wouldn't lead to the man hitting him. Then they would have an even bigger problem...
'I just want my wife to be able to sit beside me in First Class, but because the fucking airline stuffed up, she's in Coach and I'm up here. It's out anniversary man. The woman beside me won't switch. All I want is her up here,' the guy said, and Kurt looked over at Blaine, rolling his eyes
Two hours, and almost one hundred dollars worth of bourbon later, the guy was passed out in his seat. Kurt and Greg had struck up a conversation about their jobs, as both were in the fashion business. Holly was watching her father interact with this man, who isn't her papa, and was glaring at the two of them. Blaine wasn't that happy either, considering he had originally told Kurt that he isn't an overly jealous or possessive person, this isn't going the way he had planned. Gripping the arm rests on his seat tightly, he took a deep breath, closing his eyes and willing himself to sleep, but every time he closed his eyes, all he could see was this died-blonde hair douche flirting with his husband. Another ten hours and they would be back in Philadelphia, on their way home, back to their lives, but married. He would let it slide, because he loves Kurt and they're just talking. Besides, who is he to say that Kurt can't talk to someone that isn't him? They've been on this plane almost two days, he's pretty sure he would be sick of talking only to Kurt for that long. Not that he doesn't like talking to Kurt, he does, just sometimes, it's nice to mingle with other people. It was Holly that put a stop to Kurt's conversation, by getting out of her seat, walking over to her father, tapping his shoulder, and telling him that he's mad at her. Then Kurt spent an hour trying to get out of Holly why she was mad. She enjoyed having the attention, so she played along. Greg fell asleep two hours later, and so did Kurt. Blaine smirked, hi-fiving Holly who grinned. She would never let anyone hurt her fathers.
PRESENT DAY
April 3rd 2019
Holly's Twelfth Birthday
Santana linked her arm with Kurt's, smiling as she pulled both him and Blaine into the lounge, where the former New Directions and Warblers and friends and family were standing around, waiting for the birthday girl to open her presents. Unbeknownst to everyone else, even Holly, was the fact that Santana, Kurt, and Blaine had been talking about the Latina being their surrogate again. Given that Britt couldn't conceive, due to an accident a few years back, Santana was the perfect option, and of course, they wouldn't trust anyone else. So, they had gone about it the proper way. Neither of them wanted to know which of them was the biological father, because it wouldn't matter. Holly is their daughter, and even though Kurt is her biological father, Blaine treats her as if she's his too... no matter the impossibility. But when Santana whispered in their ears that she was pregnant, that they were going to be fathers again, they couldn't helped but (loudly) celebrate. Everyone was looking at them, like they had grown two heads or something, but the minute Holly caught her father's eyes, she knew and started cheering, jumping up and down and hugging everyone she could. Finn was standing beside Quinn, confused, raising an eyebrow at Brittany, who just smiled. Finally, when Rachel called that she'd had enough, that they wanted to know what was going on, Kurt nodded at Santana.
'None of you knew this, apart from us, but... I'm going to be a surrogate for Kurt and Blaine again... and I just told them, because I just found out... that they're pregnant!' Santana said to silence, letting it sink in, before everyone started cheering
'This is the best birthday present in the world. I am so excited,' Holly said, hugging her aunt and fathers
'Did you honestly keep this from us because you were afraid it wouldn't work? Or did you keep it from us, because you know Rachel can't keep her mouth shut about it, and it would have been all over the papers within days?' Mercedes asked, jokingly, but the brunette glared at her
'We kept it from you because we wanted to make sure that it was real before we got everyone's hopes up. But now that's it happening... Holly, open presents because it's still your birthday,' Blaine said, and the twelve year old ran back over to the pile in the middle of the room
Santana, Blaine, Kurt and Brittany watched from the kitchen as Holly ripped into her presents. Santana had expressed concern early, when they had first sat down to talk about the idea of her being their surrogate again, about how she would be emotionally. Kurt made her promise, that if at any point, she felt like she couldn't go through with it, or it was too hard, that they would understand. They would find someone else. But after thinking about it for a couple of months, Santana knew that she was in the right head-space to give Kurt and Blaine their second child. She and Brittany had talked about having a surrogate, of even one of them having a baby, but neither of them was ready yet. Besides, Brittany wants to adopt one of the girls in her dance class, and Santana didn't care how they became parents, as long as they were. From where they had started, in a classroom, at William McKinley Highschool in Lima, Ohio, to where they are now, owners of one of the most prestigious firms in America, they have done pretty well for themselves... and Santana wouldn't change anything. She and Kurt wouldn't change anything in their lives... not for all the money in the world, of for the celebrity lifestyle... not for anything... Along the way, somewhere through all the shit they had been through to get here, they had figured out that the reason that love hurts sometimes, is because it's supposed to. Sometimes relationships fail, they fall apart and it's devastating, other times, when you find that one person you're supposed to be with for the rest of your life... it's the most fantastic feeling of all time... So when Blaine tells them he's thinking about writing a book, not based exactly on them, but loosely on their lives... triumphs, fails etc, Brittany asks what it's going to be about... for a moment, they're all watching Blaine, who is watching Kurt, who simply smiles at his husband, already knowing what he's planning on calling it.
'I was thinking 'When Love Hurts'. I think it will help people, to understand that sometimes, love hurts, but when you find it... it's the best thing in the world...' Blaine replied, and Santana grabbed his hand
'You are the cheesiest man I have ever known in my entire life. But I think that's a great idea. Besides, it would be a best seller, considering all the shit we went through. Drama followed us around like the plague... you'd have a hit on your hands Anderson,' Santana replied
'Hummel-Anderson and yes, thank you Santana. It's nice to know that I have permission to write about you,' Blaine said, and waited for the girl to catch on, already preparing himself to be chased around the kitchen... Kurt counted down from three before Santana pounced
'We have weird partners Kurt... let's go join the normal people in the lounge...' Brittany said, laughing as they linked arms, and went back to watch Holly finish opening the large box Rachel and Puck had wrapped her present in...
Sometimes, love hurts. We're all searching for it, and we all want it. Sometimes we get it, and it's amazing and wonderful. Sometimes it's not. No one gets exactly what they thought they were going to get, but they can get something along the lines. I've been through ups and downs, and I know what it's like to find love, to be loved and to watch the people around me fall in love, and begin their lives. I'm writing this book, my name is Blaine Hummel-Anderson, and I know what it's like, When Love Hurts.
