Assassination Chapter 8 Who Can You Trust?
Heyy everyone! I know I truly do say this a lot, but I'm so sorry for not updating in so long. Not only am I having writers-block (I mean come on, I've been writing for how many years straight?), but I also just moved across the country and along with the bad luck I've been having, but I've been busy with the move and everything. Just as a warning, I start school on the 3rd of September so once that starts, I'm gonna see how much time I can put aside for my stories. It's my first year in high school and I'm honestly a bit terrified, especially since I don't know anyone. Depending on how busy I am during the first month (more or less), I'll be able to determine how often I will update. My goal is every two weeks, but I'm not completely sure. I know when I first started, I had a lot of time, but I was in middle school and half the time I could do work in class or at home since it usually didn't require much work to do lol. Well, that's it from me so lets get on with the story! As always, review and enjoy! REVIEW!

Kim's POV
The steam of the hot shower fogged up the room around me as I turned the faucet off, stopping the running water above me almost immediately.
I quickly rung out my hair, grabbing the towel that I hung over the shower beforehand, and then threw it over my head I took the second towel, wrapping it around me as I stepped out of the shower.
After using the decent brush they had before me and the mirror that I had to wipe clean of condensation, I was done in mere minutes and changed into the clothing I found.
Like before, I found a pair of skinny khaki pants, but unlike before, I threw on a black V-neck.
Because I was very fond with my jacket I was already wearing, I kept it considering it wasn't messed up too badly.
After smirking to myself in the mirror as I continued to examine my clean clothes, I smirked one last time to myself before leaving the room.
As I walked down the hallway, I called out to Jack as I informed him that he could go clean up.
"Hey Jack, I'm done." I called out as I neared the end of the hall.
Due to the fact I heard no response in return, my eyebrows scrunched together in confusion as walked to the end of the hall.
To the left of me, I saw Jack sitting on the couch that leaned against the wall.
His head was buried in the palms of his hands as he sat upwards on the couch.
Seeing him in this odd state made my eyebrows rise up as I repeated again, with both a louder and firmer tone "Jack, I'm done."
When he didn't answer me again, I leaned over the back of the couch and tapped his shoulder.
When I did, he jumped up high in the air as he got in a defensive stance a few away from me, arms elevated up into a fighting position.
I then gave him my famous "Really?" look as I leaned against the edge of the wall.
He exhaled in relief, putting his arms down as he straightened his legs to their original standing position.
Sensing my confusion towards the previous sight, he mumbled out "Sorry." just before making his way around me and down the hall.
I hesitated whether or not to stop him, but after seeing the look on his face, I decided to drop it for now.
After hearing the sound of the door behind me shutting was heard, I then made my way to the couch and decided to lay back and relax.
Once seated, I leaned my head back on the arm of the couch and closed my eyes.
This was honestly probably the first time in months I could sleep peacefully, without any worry or apprehension.
I then slowly began to fade into a deep slumber.
When I awoke, I came to behind I sight I didn't expect to see.
Crouched down to the level of the couch was Jack.
Why that's odd you might ask?
Well, he's only wearing camouflage cargo pants like before.
His entire upper body was revealed to me as I used all my will to keep my eyes looking at his.
I know what you might be thinking…
Me?
Checking someone out?
More specifically him?
Hey, I'm still a teen and if you saw it with your own eyes, you'd wanna see it too.
Admit it.
That now being ignored, I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as I asked "Jack? Why are you standing here crouched at the foot of the couch?"
"I just wanted your opinion on which shirt to pick. They had black, grey, camouflage, white, and I was tied between the black and camouflage shirt."
"And?"
"And I wanted you to pick for me. So tell me…" he began as he stood up, lifting up two shirts on hangers into view before him.
After placing both shirts in front of his chest for me to see, he then asked "Which one?" finishing his sentence he began just moments ago.
My eyes flickered between both multiple times before I finally came to a decision.
"The black tee."
He then nodded, tossing the unwanted shirt to the side as he took the selected shirt off of the hanger.
He then threw the shirt over his head, struggling slightly to get his head through the neck hole of the shirt as I watched in amusement.
Without thinking, my eyes managed to trickle their way down slightly to glance at his torso.
I could feel my eyes dialate in great interest as I blinked a couple times, snapping myself out of my trance just in time.
A second or two later and Jack, who now had the shirt on correctly, would've saw me silently gawking at the sight.
After adjusting his shirt slightly, he looked up at me and asked "You wanna go and find the mayor?"
"I thought he was going to come and get us soon anyways?"
"Yeah, I know. I just don't wanna wait. I'm starving."
I was about to protest when my stomach just so coincidentally grumbled, making me put a hand to my stomach as I nodded, agreeing with him as I said "Ok, let's go."
Jack's POV
Kim and I were both traveling down the hall of the palace.
There was a deathly silence and we both were on edge slightly due to that factor.
Though we knew we were supposed to wait him to come back, but we can't help it that Kim and I are both starved… even though we just ate.
Ignoring that, we both made it to the end of the door and were stuck when a decision had to be made.
"So, which way should we go?" I asked as Kim observed each hallway to our sides.
"Right, that's the way we came from."
"You remember how we got here?"
"Of course. From the room, we took a left, a right, another right, and a left so that means we go right, left, left, then right to get back there."
I just stared at her, eyes wide as I put my arms up in a playful surrender.
After doing so, I then motioned her to lead the way as I followed.
After taking the first right, we traveled down the tiny hallway that led to the next on the left.
As we walked about halfway down, Kim stopped, snapping me out of my trance once again which I had previously fixated on the ground.
I immediately looked up to Kim who stood in her spot, frozen.
I went to go say something when I was instantly hushed by her when she stuck a finger to my lip, not bothering to look back at me as she did so.
Instead, she kept her head tilted in the direction of the door to our left.
Knowing she must have had a good reason as for stopping me, I followed her actions and crouched down as she did.
We both were leaned against the wall, her ear against the door as I waited patiently, looking for any sign of what she heard from her body language as I did so.
The tension began to gradually build as I impatiently waited for any clue as to what she was hearing at the moment.
Without notice, she turned around, pushed me to my feet, and then moved closer to the center of the hallway before me.
I was about to ask what her confusing doings were about, but understood when the door we were previously listening to burst open.
Standing before us was the mayor, mouth slightly agape in surprise as he took notice of us.
His eyes flickered to Kim who remained on the floor and me as his head tilted in confusion.
Sensing that he was very ambiguous of our presence, I came up with a quick excuse.
"Hi sir, we were just on out was down to find you, but Kim here had to tie her shoe."
"Is that so?" he asked, his eyes glaring at me as he eyed me curiously.
I tensed up slightly at the look he was giving me.
It was indeed frightening and it felt as if he was staring down into my soul.
I knew he was observing my actions to see if I was lying, so instead of letting my anxiety get to me, I loosened my solidified appearance as Kim cut in.
"Yeah, my shoe untied when Jack stepped on my lace." she informed him, turning her head fiercely as she glared at me.
Wow, so she's an actor too.
Once she finished her last loop on her shoe, she stood up as I moved to her side.
His eyes showed a great amount of uncertainty of our reasoning, but seemed to ignore it when a warm grin took over his face.
"No problem, now, shall we go and get some lunch? I know you just ate, but I wish for you two to get some extra sleep afterwards. Early tomorrow morning, we're gonna fix you both up with some new intel and equipment we acquired."
With a quick nod from us, we followed him down the hall and to the room we ate in before.
Not much happened at the eating besides an intimidating awkward silence, so I'd prefer to leave it at that and skip to the aftermath.
As soon as we were excused from our meal, an assistant of his led us back to our rooms.
Once the door was shut, I couldn't help but let a yawn escape my mouth as I put my arms up, stretching both my arms and my back as I did so.
I was in fact tired, there was doubt about it.
I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a nap like the mayor preferred.
Making up my mind, I called out Kim's name.
Once I assured myself I had her attention when she turned around from in the bathroom where she was currently washing her hands, I told her "I'm gonna go to bed. My body's telling me I need it."
I chuckled at the end as she stretched too, telling me just moments later "Yeah, me too."
I was the first to venture down the hall to the bedroom as she followed just a few paces behind me.
Kim's POV
Without any sense of hesitation, Jack walked over to the closest side of the bed, collapsed onto the mattress, and then sprawled his limbs out across the entire bed.
Once his face hit the pillow, I could tell a wave of comfort washed over him.
Sadly, that was too short to be lived when I glared at him, sending two burning holes into the back of his head.
As if he sensed this, he then used his arms to push his weight up slightly as he turned his head to face the only other person in the room.
I had an eyebrow raised to him as I folded my arms across my chest for the second time today.
I could tell he was trying to figure out why I gave him the look as his face showed much frustration as he tried to think of the reasoning behind my expression.
My eyes narrowing to their minimal size as he then turned completely around moments later.
When he finally realized it was the fact that he was hogging all of the bed, he quickly moved over to the farther side, emptying half of the bed.
His eyes immediately went to mine, as if he knew I was irritated with his actions.
That's when I made my mind up.
Making my decision to sleep on the couch, I turned and began my journey to the door.
"Kim, wait!"
Just before I could pass the border of the door, I stopped in place at the sound of my name.
I turned my head to my left, giving my ear a better audio hearing of him as he continued on.
"Come on, I was just kidding around with you. Let's just go to sleep, ok? I won't bite, I promise."
I exhaled, before hesitantly giving in.
On normal conditions, I would have gladly taken the couch, but considering these were no normal conditions whatsoever, I disregarded the thought.
I swiftly lifted the covers of the bed, wrapping myself underneath the warmth of the comforters as soon as I possibly could.
When I found myself comfortable, I then closed my eyes in an attempt to get some sleep.
While in the middle of sleeping, I felt it harder to breath.
Then all of a sudden, I felt some pressure press down on my face.
My eyes shot open to see someone I didn't expect to see doing something I never thought he'd do.
Here was Jack, hovering over me while pressing what I believed was his shirt that he was previously wearing earlier onto my face from my nose down.
As a reaction, I quickly went to throw a punch his way, but he blocked it due to his upper-hand factor that he was above me.
I knew Jack was smart enough to know the thin fabric of a shirt wouldn't suffocate me, but why did he use it then?
It was a mind boggling question spinning widely in my head as I remained irresolute of his atypical actions.
Because he now struggled to get a firm ahold of me, I used the opportunity to escape his grip.
I managed to punch him in his rib, causing him to let go for a split second.
Pushing through the immense pain I knew I caused him, he continued holding down the cloth to my head as I tried to shake him off.
Moments later, I hit him in the stomach, causing him to finally let go as he struggled to stay above me.
As I watched his weak figure sway to and fro, I soon caught smell of a malodorous odor once the article of clothing was removed from my face.
I began to cough at the smell as I noticed Jack begin to fade out of consciousness.
My eyes widened in confusion as he removed one hand from the other side of me, clutching his stomach as he muttered out "Kim, no."
That's when he collapsed.
The last arm he had holding himself up failed, causing him to fall back into his original spot he slept in.
Just then, I felt it harder to breathe than before.
The smell had seemed to reach a whole new level and it soon caused my vision to blur.
With my distortion, my body soon began to grow weaker.
By the second, I felt myself fading away from the world and I could barely move.
I quickly began to lose control of myself.
I then slowly faded into blackness as my control slipped from my grasp and I fell into unconsciousness.
Jack's POV
I woke up in the midst of what felt like the early afternoon to the smell of a putrid smell.
I slowly opened my eyes, taking sight of the room around me.
As I scanned the room, hoping to take sight of what or where the smell was originating from, I discovered my vision was altered.
What was clear as day, was now as thick as the Amazon.
It was hard for me to make out the easiest of things.
Taking all of my observations into mind, I realized it must be something in the air, maybe a gas perhaps.
Letting my offensive mentality take over, I did the necessary.
Knowing that I inhaled too much of the gas and was to soon fall unconscious either way, I attempted to cover Kim's mouth in hopes she wouldn't inhale any of the fumes.
Taking immediate action, I quickly took the closest thin fabric, which happened to be my shirt, and placed it just so it covered her nose and mouth.
The second the cloth came in contact with her face, her eyes immediately shot open and she thought of me as a hostile.
She struggled to escape my grip, making sure to get a few good hits at me as I made sure to keep the cloth pressed to her face.
Just then after receiving a hit to my rib, my body felt as if an 18-wheeler hit me.
Taking advantage of the pain she suppressed upon me, she hit me again, this time in the rib.
Not only did the pain seem to rise to an excruciating level, but the odor being emitted seemed to finally have its end game.
With only seconds left, I gripped my rib tightly, hoping to stop some of the pain as I muttered out "Kim, no."
Just then, I felt my remaining arm go limp as I collapsed, face planting the comforter to the left of Kim.
I felt my vision begin to fade into darkness while my mind continued to spiral into uncontrolled chaos as the world disappeared from my grasp.
Though I could remember nothing from the time in-between my transferring of conscious states, I could only remember my last breath.
I gasped awake, propelling my upper body upwards into a sitting position in my bed as I looked over to my right.
My eyes immediately landed on the Kim's figure as she laid there, wrapped deeply in the blankets.
Her arms were wrapped firmly around the pillow as her hair was thrown recklessly behind her.
Though everything seemed normal, my mind tried to convince me otherwise.
My mind told me what I thought was real, wasn't, and caused me to have a mental battle over the situation.
As real as it felt, it seemed to me that it was just a dream.
Well, more like a nightmare, but you get the point…
It was just an illusion caused by my paranoia towards the mayor.
Once I assured that to myself, I exhaled, outing myself back deep into the blankets and used my remaining efforts to go back to sleep.
Just after getting comfortable in the sheets, I closed my eyes and waited for myself to slip away.
Just before I could, I felt the bed shift beneath me.
I turned my head to my partner in the bed, only to see her stirring herself awake.
She pushed up off her side and threw herself onto her back, brushing her arm against my back a she did so.
At that moment, I too got off my side, though this time I turned onto my other side.
I propped my head up on my hand, allowing me to look down at the blond before me as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes.
Through her tired acts, she managed to mumble to me "What time is it?"
"I don't know."
With that being said, I looked at the nearest clock and saw it was almost 9am.
After informing her of the time, she groaned loudly in annoyance before pulling the comforters over her head.
Just seconds after doing so, she fiercely removed the blanket from her face, leaned up, and turned to me.
Her eyes stared down into me as I leaned up to, meeting her gaze at a better level.
Just then without any intentional warning, she pounced on me, pinning my arms above my head as she asked "Why in the heck did you try to suffocate me?!"
"I was trying to save you!"
"Save me?"
Oops, that seemed to anger her even more.
"How is suffocating me saving me? Last time I checked, you're working with the enemy of my ex-organization."
"So? You trusted me Kim!"
"Yeah, and maybe I just let your eye candy of hair get the best of me!"
"I knew I shouldn't have trusted you…" she muttered, attempting to get off me.
Before she could get a single foot on the ground beside me, I grabbed her wrist.
"Let go of me!" she snapped, kneeing me in my "Happy Meal".
At that moment, my mind went half blank as I squeezed my legs together tightly in agony.
A noisy groan elicited from my throat as my eyes dilated greatly.
For those who don't understand the pain involved, let's just say it's massive.
Taking advantage of my weakness, Kim got off me and began her walk out of the room.
Since I assumed she was attempting to leave, I knew I had to catch her or I'd be in more trouble than I already would be in.
Forcing myself to ignore the tender ache in between my legs, I quickly got to my feet and jogged as best as I was to the doorway.
Once out, I made my way towards the door and sure enough, Kim was in the living room.
She grabbed her jacket she left laying out and walked down the tiny hall that led to the door.
"Kim, please wait. Let me explain."
Kim's POV
I knew it.
Deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, down inside I knew something didn't seem right.
I mean seriously, since when does the enemy keep their word?
Exactly, I just let Mr. Buffman get the worst of me.
Knowing I had to leave immediately, I ran out into the living room, grabbed my jacket, then made my way to the door.
As the distance of feet between the door and I shrunk gradually, I heard a light thumping behind me from what I assumed to be Jack.
I was only mere feet from the door when I reached forwards, grabbing ahold of the door handle.
Just before I could pull open the door enough for me to get through, the door was slammed shut.
To the right of my head was a hand of the only other person who could be in the room.
In utter frustration, I jerked at the handle, hoping it would open though I knew it wouldn't.
Once my mind was fully convinced it wasn't gonna happen, I reluctantly turned around on my heel, forcing me to come eye to eye with the shaggy-haired brunette once again.
We simply stared at one another for a great deal of time, speaking nothing as we glared at one another.
It was immediately noted that he was invading my personal space, as well with the glares radiating from his eyes that he was angered.
As much as I wanted to exit the premise, I thought it would at least do me justice to hear his explanation of the earlier events.
I exhaled slowly, giving him the indication that I was in fact calmed and giving the opportunity to explain himself.
Continuing to keep his hand to the side of my head as it's been for the past few minutes as a warning, he began to speak.
"Kim, I wasn't trying to suffocate you. We both know a shirt like mine would be useless to use especially when there was a perfectly good pillow."
I went to protest at his choice of words when I was shushed, muting my mouth as he continued on.
"If I really wanted to do something to you, don't you think I'd be smarter about it? Especially considering you're just as good as me?"
Once that was said, I fake coughed out "Better." as a quick chuckle escaped his lips, followed by a smirk grin to quickly appear as fast as it faded.
I folded my arms across my chest, wiping my smile clean from my face as I asked him "Then why did you do it?"
"I woke up at the smell of something. I saw a foggy substance coming from the vents and since my vision seemed to be disoriented, I assumed it to be some sort of gas. I was only trying to prevent you from inhaling it."
Since he seemed to sense my minor doubts over his explanation, he quickly added on "I know it's hard to trust me being the enemy and all, but if anyone knows if I'm telling the truth more than me, it's you. You just need to trust yourself before you go paranoid."
When I heard that, I couldn't help but snicker under my breath as I tilted my head forwards slightly, giving me a better view at the floor as I saw Jack's head tilt in confusion.
My unexpected smile seemed to confuse him as he lowered his down, trying to get a better view of my face.
"I already was paranoid." I chuckled as I lifted my head back to its original relaxed position.
Just then after a grin appeared on his face, he told me "You're not paranoid." before looking me deep in the eyes.
Without another word to be said, he swooped forwards, engulfing into my lips with a kiss.
With the gap closed between us, my arms cunningly found their way around his neck, wrapping around it tightly.
After maybe what in reality was about twenty or so seconds, I removed his lips from mine, moving his mouth closer to one of my ears as he whispered "You're cautious."
Just then, he leaned towards me, supposing that he was to peck me again, but before he could, I tilted my head out of reach.
I knew he would be puzzled from my odd actions, so to answer the question he was soon to ask, I told him "I'm sorry."
"For what? You were just being cautious."
I then chuckled, laughing lightly as I answered him.
"For kicking you there, and for punching you here." I said, referring to his rib as I poked him there.
A look of pain flashed through his eyes, causing him to stiffen up as he groaned lightly.
He looked down at my finger, scrunching his face together as he looked back up at me.
"I kinda forgot about that…"
"Well, you should kinda bandage it up." I said, poking him again as he gave in and retreated in the direction of the bathroom.
Jack's POV
Since it was apparent that she wasn't going to move her finger until I moved myself and since every time I inhaled, I felt an piercing pain in my rib, I removed myself from her grip and made my way to the bathroom.
Because it wasn't my room, I was unsure where the medical kit was, and even if there even was one.
I first checked the cabinets under the counter only to find nothing.
With the only place left to check being the cabinets on the wall, I looked in them to find exactly what I was looking for.
A white box marked with a red plus sign was sitting directly in front of me.
Without reluctance, I grabbed the box and set it on the counter, opening it seconds after.
Once I grabbed the necessary padding and bandaging available, I realized I would need help since I'd have to wrap the bandage completely around my torso.
So, I did the necessary.
"Kim!"
Moments later, she peeked her head in the doorway and asked "Yeah?"
"I'm gonna need your help." I truthfully joked as she held back a laugh.
She then fully entered the room and looked at me through the mirror before us as she asked "What do you want me to do?"
"Well, I'm gonna take off my shirt and besides gawking in amazement, your main priority is to help me wrap my rib."
After smirking, she rolled her eyes as she responded back with "Ok whatever, let's get this over with."
Like I informed her, I carefully lifted the shirt up and over my head, tossing it on the counter as I caught her in the act of glancing at my chest in the mirror.
Bandage in hand, she walked over to my other side in which the sore rib was located.
Taking the padding, she then placed it over the spot in which the bruising was visible while I watched.
Catching notice of me watching her, she smirked and took my hand, putting it to the bandage as she said "Hold it."
With the bandage wrap in hand to bind the padding to my bruised rib, she took a long strip and began wrapping it around me so the cushions would stay in their desired spot.
Once it was applied, she smirked to herself, as if admiring her work before tossing me the roll of the remaining wrap.
Just then as she made her way to exit the room, she hollered back to me "Now get your shirt back on." causing me to chuckle in hilarity.
Once my laughter was at a controlled level, I put the medical stuff away and threw my shirt back on and made my way back to the living room.
When I turned the corner of the hallway, I Kim sprawled out long ways on the couch.
With no room to sit on the couch, I took a seat in the nearby chair.
I began to fiddle with my fingers as I began to think about yesterday's event that caused the heated argument we had not too long ago.
My mind went deep into thought as some realizations began to hit me one by one.
With the tallies beginning to fall in favor of the negative reasoning behind the mysterious gas in our room last night, I knew I should inform Kim.
Once I had a reasonable amount of evidence to my theory in mind, I called out Kim's name, getting her attention almost immediately.
Since she was lying so she was facing me, she simply turned her head as I began explaining my thoughts.
"You know that gas I was telling you about?"
With a flick of the head up and down, I continued on.
"That can't be coincidental, there must be something we don't know about."
"Well, the mayor did find us directly right outside his study. Also, as much as I knew he was telling the truth, I had my suspicions that he had more to say. He's been pretty shady since and I can guarantee he's not doing it for his own leisure."
"So, that means all we have to be is find out what piece of the puzzle is missing. Maybe he could be working with someone?"
"Maybe… What if he was orchestrating the attacks himself? He gets publicity throughout the town, becomes a hero and makes himself untouchable."
"That sounds plausible, the only way to find out for sure would be to do some sneaking."
Just then, I averted my glaze from Kim to the window behind her at the sight of something move.
I quickly got up to inspect, catching Kim's attention as she followed slowly behind.
The first thing I see was a helicopter landing on the helipad on the opposite side of the complex.
Just as it landed, I felt Kim's shoulder rub up against my back as she looked out the window from behind me.
We both waited patiently as we watched for who or what was to come out from the helicopter.
To our detestation, our luck turned for the worst.
The VIP man to step out of the aircraft was none other than the man who's on the hunt for us.
At the sight of him, both Kim and I's eyes dilated as she muttered out "No, how did he find us?"
We continued to observe him, watching every single step he took until he entered the building.
Once he was out of sight, Kim and I could only stand there in disbelief as we turned to face one another.
We stared at each other for a few seconds before our brains could finally comprehend the fact the man out for our heads was now in the same building as us.
At that moment, we both started pacing simultaneously.
I ran a hand through my hair as I muttered out loud "How did he find us so quickly?"
"Forget that! What's he doing here?!"
Just then we both froze as the more serious realization set in.
"I think we should-" I began before Kim finished for me.
"Run!"
