Chapter 19: Sinking In

"Mikan..." Natsume tried to call Mikan's attention for nth time since Kaname asked Mikan to be his prom partner.

Mikan, even though hearing Natsume, ignored him and just focused on the lessons.

"Mikan..." Natsume said again and it was getting on Mikan's nerves already. She couldn't focus on the lesson because her childhood crush, or should I say forever-crush, kept on calling her and everytime he did, her heart just jumps in joy.

Or not. Mikan thought as Natsume called her once more.

"Mikan, please look at me." Natsume sounded like he was breaking, like all of his pride was... gone.

Mikan looked at him and saw Natsume smirking.

That jerk. She was about to turn away when Natsume held her hand, which was innocently placed on top of their table.

"What are you doing?" Mikan hissed as she wiggled her hand out from Natsume's grip.

"Talk to me, Polka." He said as if demanding but there was something off in his voice.

Mikan sighed. "Later", she mouthed.

"Mikan-chan!" Kaname was already outside their room when Mikan's class was dismissed.

"Ka—Kaname-kun?" Mikan was just as shocked as Natsume.

"Mikan." Natsume's heart was racing.

That asshole. I'm taking Mikan. Natsume was scared. For the first time, he found a rival.

"Let's go." Natsume tried to compose himself, ordering Mikan around as usual.

"Natsume-kun. Wait." Mikan said. Natsume heard Mikan explaining things to Kaname and then he heard hier footsteps coming towards him.

He sighed in relief.

Don't go away, Mikan. He thought as he looked at Mikan who was already walking beside him.

They made their way to Natsume's favorite place – the sakura tree.

"It's still your favorite tree, eh?" Mikan asked as she sat down under it.

"Hn." Natsume sat beside her.

They remained silent. Just silent. A minute passed, two, three... But no one could just break the silence. They were already comfortable with each other's presence.

"Uhm, Natsu-kun..." Mikan started.

"Hm?" Natsume's eyes were closed.

"What do you want to say?" She turned her head just when Natsume slowly opened his eyes.

Mikan took a deep breath to relax her racing heart.

How could you be so beautiful. Mikan blushed.

"Please don't go with Kaname." He whispered.

Natsume's eyes were full of emotions. He was pleading, begging. He was sorry, hurt, regretting. He was falling in love with Mikan while being already in love with her.
