Chapter Five
Magenta looked at herself one last time in the mirror above Layla's dresser. Layla had offered to help Magenta get ready for her 'date' with Will tonight. She was nervous and couldn't stop her hands from sweating as she thought about being with Will…alone…by themselves…with no one else around.
Magenta will admit that she had tried to make it a double date with Layla and Warren to take the pressure off of them, but Warren had expressed his opinion about that decision very loudly and stated that he would not be going on a date just to watch two people make stupid puppy eyes at each other and have it be their job to make conversation.
If Magenta wasn't sure she hated Warren Peace before, she knew she loathed him now.
"You look beautiful, Mage!" Layla grinned at her as she turned. "Don't you think, Warren?"
From Layla's bed Warren grunted as he continued to lounge on the bed with a book in front of his face. Magenta didn't know why she was so surprised every time she came over and found him at home at Layla's house. When she first came over to hang out with Layla and found Warren sitting on her couch with his feet propped up on the coffee table while watching wrestling, Magenta nearly had an aneurism. She didn't know what shocked her more: that he was so at home or that he was allowed to be so at home. He didn't even look at her when he said that Layla was waiting for her in the kitchen.
Layla and Magenta both glared at him, but he didn't notice. Well, if she was being honest, Mage was sure that he saw them, but he just ignored them.
"Ignore him; he's being a jerk today."
"He's a jerk every day," Magenta replied. Layla rolled her eyes and left the room with a quick glare in the direction of her bed.
Warren turned the page, "Thank you. It's a part of my charm."
"You think you have charm?" She asked with a snort of disbelief.
Warren shrugged, "I got Layla, didn't I?"
Magenta rolled her eyes, "That's still a mystery. I'm not even sure that Freud would be able to figure out why she is dating you."
"What can I say: it comes natural. But at least I have a girlfriend."
Magenta gawked at him, "What do you think I'm doing? Getting dressed up like a doll just to hang out with you? I'm going on a date."
"Yeah, so you can finally get a boyfriend."
She was about to retort when Layla came back into the room, "Will you two stop it?"
"She started it, Hippy."
Magenta glared at him, "You're childish."
"STOP IT! This is supposed to be a great night where you have fun and feel butterflies in your belly, and you giggle, and bat your eyelashes, and you actually smile at him. Then at the end of the night and the date goes how I hope it to, you guys will kiss and then plan another date. I'm not having this ruined by an argument that you have been having for two days now!"
Magenta stared at Layla in shock. From her peripheral she could see that Warren looked away from his beloved book to raise an eyebrow at Layla in surprise.
There was a silence in the room as Warren returned to his book and Layla scurried around the room gathering things and shoving them into a black mini purse.
After a moment, Magenta broke the silence and asked, "Why do I have to dress up?"
Layla rolled her eyes and gave a long suffering sigh, "Because this is a date and you want to look good for Will, right?" When Magenta rolled her eyes, Layla beamed. "He should be here any second."
"You think he's going to actually use the door this time?" Warren asked from them bed, book still in front face.
Layla frowned at this and grumbled, "He better."
Magenta saw Warren smirk as he flipped the page. She knew that Warren was enjoying how wound Layla was about this date and he was just trying to rile her up with his question. She had almost felt sorry for Will when she saw Layla corner him in the hallway later that day and tell him the 'rules' for their date. But then she got over it because he was the one that asked her out, not the other way around.
"Magenta! Will is here for your date!" Josslyn yelled from down stairs. Magenta could hear the humor and excitement in her voice. It was a toss-up between Layla and Josslyn in who was more eager about her date with Will.
Layla shrieked and clapped her hands together in excitement. "Okay, here is your jacket." Magenta stumbled as Layla thrust the object into her chest. "This is your purse; in it you have your cell phone, lipstick, eyeliner, money-but you shouldn't be buying anything, Will will buy it for you. Oh, I also put your keys in there. Now, let's go!"
Warren closed the book and then rolled off the bed in the next second. "Where do you think you're going?" She asked in an accusing voice.
"You didn't think that I would miss this did you, Purple?" With a smile that she knew he considered charming he dashed down the stairs to give Will a hard time.
"Why didn't he go over and help Will get ready?" Magenta asked as she trudged down the hall after Layla.
"Get over it; he wanted to spend time with me."
"He ALWAYS wants to spend time with you. Does he ever go home?"
Layla shot Mage a glare as they reached the stairs. "Just wait here."
She watched as red hair flew down the stairs behind her best friend as she raced down them. She could hear voices coming from the direction of the living room then it was silent and Layla returned to the bottom of the stairs. She smiled encouraging at her and motioned to her to come down stairs.
Magenta gulped in a breath and rubbed her sweating hands against her thighs. With every step she took she kept thinking to herself: I can do this. There was nothing to be nervous about. It was just Will Stronghold. He was just a boy. I have nothing to lose from tonight. I'm getting a free meal. I will never have to go out with him again. I can do this.
She took her last step and turned to the living room. Josslyn and Michael were both standing to the side of the room with grins on their faces. Well, Josslyn was grinning, Michael had a slight smirk on his face. Warren was standing next to Layla who was bouncing on her toes. Warren raised an eyebrow in challenge.
Back straightening. Magenta turned a looked at Will who was standing in front of the door with his mouth dropped open. His eyes took her all in from head to toe. In that second she was glad that Layla made her wear her hair down. She curled the bottom of her hair so that her purple highlights were visible. Mage was wearing a chain necklace with wedding band on it that hung low and reached close to the top of her white vest that was covering her violet long sleeve shirt. He took in her spiked belt that was wrapped with the right side high on her hips while the left was placed lower. Then he gulped as he was how short her skirt was. It was black with lace decorating the bottom rim with skulls and hearts. She was wearing white leggings that met her knew high black boots.
She knew that she looked good, and she had a light black jacket with purple zippers that Layla bought her for her birthday to go along with the outfit.
Will cleared his throat, "You look very good."
Layla scowled at him, "Good?" She whispered in outrage.
Magenta smirked and stepped forward. "Thank you, you look nice too."
Will blushed as he rubbed the back of his head. He was wearing a white T-shirt under his plaid button down shirt that was black and white. He was wearing dark blue jeans and white Adidas.
"Thanks," He breathed out. Magenta could feel her heart pounding as she looked at him. "Are you ready to go?"
Magenta glanced at Layla who nodded vigorously and raised her hands in thumbs up. "'Always do what you are afraid to do.'"
"Ralph Waldo Emerson," Magenta rolled her eyes.
She took a deep breath then looked up at Will. He held out his hand for her and slowly she reached out as said, "As ready as I'll ever be."
He pulled her forward until they stepped out of the door. Taking another deep breath to try to calm her rapidly pulsing heart, she walked with Will down the street. Magenta didn't even notice that she was still holding his hand, but Will did.
