Maybeck POV

A small squeak from behind me cause me to jump and spin around. "CHARLENE?!" I gasped. The girl didn't look at me. She was staring in fear at the area above me. I froze, a chill running down my back. Slowly, I looked up and sucked in a breath.

A few feet above me, dangling from a branch, was a huge, snarling, beast.

I didn't move. I parted my lips and let out a slow exhale, staying as calm as possible. The beast pulled back its lips in a hideous growl. Slobber dripped from its sharpened teeth (it had about THREE FREAKIN' ROWS OF CHOMPERS!) and fell onto my forehead, but still I stayed put.

The beast wasn't like anything I had ever seen. It had brown, matted fur held together by clumps of blood. Its squinty eyes were pure black, no white or anything! Its four legs spread out into giant feet that were about as big as its head, with claws even longer. All in all, this guy was TERRIFYING!

I couldn't stay here, staring up at it forever. I slowly moved my hand across the ground, and a small hiss came from its mouth, a snake-like tongue flicking out from the three rows of teeth before disappearing back behind them. I held my breath. My eyes trailed back over at Charlene. She still stared at the beast above me, the crutch shaking in her white-knuckled grip. Another growl came from the beast, and my eyes flicked back up to it.

Then, slowly, I slid my foot. It opened its mouth and the snake tongue flopped out, inches away from my face. I instantly let out a tiny gasp and froze. It panted, hot, disgusting breath pushing against my face. I swallowed back the urge to gag. Then, I slid my foot another inch.

It suddenly released its grip on the branch and fell, opening its mouth wider. Charlene screamed.

Willa POV

"That's Charlene!" I instantly recognized the scream that interrupted Amanda. Jess instantly ran past us all, slicing through the trees with her rusty sword and disappearing into the forest.

"JESS!" Amanda ran after her. Then Finn, after her. Philby chased after them as well.

"Guys!" I yelped, looking around in fear before deciding to run into the forest.

I leaped over a root and shoved more branches out of my face. I heard the buzz of mosquitoes and other various bugs buzz past my ear. I could feel the branches scratching at my bare arms and my face. I held out one hand in front of my head to protect my eyes from any dangers as I followed Philby, trying not to trip. The group took a sharp turn and entered a little pathway in the forest that seemed to have all of the branches snapped or whacked out of place. I looked around at the already-crushed twigs and leaves, and the broken branches hanging limply and harmlessly. Charlene or Maybeck or both must have gone this way.

I burst into a clearing, tripping, stumbling, and falling to my hands and knees. The rest of the Keepers had frozen, staring in awe and the scene before them. I yelped in fear and scooted behind Philby.

A huge monster had one claw holding onto a tree a branch. Maybeck was curled up in a ball, arms over his head for protection. Standing above him was Charlene, shoving one of Maybeck's crutches up into the beast's mouth. Maybeck slowly uncurled and looked up at Charlene, surprised. The beast gagged and drooled, it's disgusting saliva pouring down on Charlene like a waterfall. I groaned in disgust, wanting to cover my eyes. But for some reason, they stayed peeled open, watching as the beast chomped down on the crutch and snapping it in half. Charlene fell backwards onto her butt, beside Maybeck. In her hand she clutched what was left of the crutch, a gray stick with a jagged, sharp point. She stared, wide-eyed at the sudden lack of crutch in her hand, then looked back up at the beast, that had managed to swallow the rest of the crutch - WHOLE - and is now staring at the two of the hungrily.

"HEY UGLY!" Jess yelled. Charlene, Maybeck, and the monster's heads snapped in our direction.

"JESS?!" Maybeck and Charlene gasped.

"IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE CRUTCH, MAYBE YOU'LL WANNA TRY THIS ONE ON FOR SIZE!" Jess waved the sword above her head before charging at the beast.

"JESS NO!" Amanda screeched. The beast plunged to the ground and charged back at Jess, on all fours. It suddenly stood up on its hind legs and brought one claw down on Jess. Jess swung the sword like a baseball bat, driving it through the middle of the claw. However, the beast outweighed her strength greatly, and she fell to her back, the beast with the sword stuck in its massive paw landing on top of her. Now she was the one to scream in fear, along with, well, the rest of us.

Charlene looked down at her jagged piece of crutch and, making do, stood up and leaped high as she could, landing on the creature's back and driving the sharp piece into its shoulder as a make-shift blade. The beast rose back on its hind legs, roaring with rage. I screamed, grabbing onto Philby's leg as Charlene nearly slid down the beast's back. She screeched, holding tightly onto the piece of broken crutch and bowing her head. She, along with the broken crutch, started to slide down, slowly opening a wound into the creature's back. It hissed and roared, a mix of pain and anger, twisting it's back and clawing at Charlene. She let out a long, continuous scream as the beast hopped around, twisting and churning and trying to stop Charlene. She slid further down its back, the wound growing wider. More blood poured down on Charlene's head, mixing with all the spit in her hair, but she still held fast.

Jess sat up as the beast lost its balance and fell back onto four legs, the sword stuck in its paw pushing against the ground and driving farther into its flesh. Another roar of pain rumbled the ground. Amanda, Finn, Philby, and I could only watch in horror, unarmed and useless, as Jess, Charlene, and Maybeck were going to get killed. Maybeck looked around for something, ANYTHING that could be used as a weapon, when his eyes caught a skeleton lying a few feet away from him. He lunged for it, grabbing the skeleton's arm and standing up. The lower arm bone ripped off of the rest of the skeleton. He looked down at it before lifting his knee and bringing the bone down on his leg, snapping it in half. Just like the crutch, he now had a jagged piece of broken bone in his hand. Using the sharp end as his - almost useless, might I add - weapon, he sliced at the back of the creature's ankle. It hissed in pain and fell onto its stomach. Maybeck sliced the other ankle, making the creature unable to walk on all fours.

However, the creature was smart. It used its front legs to drag itself across the ground. Charlene shrieked as she slid down onto the beast's side, still holding onto the broken crutch for dear life. The shard was now sliding down the beast's side, making it howl with pain. It grabbed Charlene, wrapping its huge crawl around her torso and yanking her, with the shard of broken crutch, off his back. It lifted itself in a position that was not unlike a "python stretch", balancing with one front leg holding it up. It held Charlene in front of its face and roared, splattering her with another layer of saliva.

Charlene screeched in utter horror, convulsing under its - I'm assuming - tight grasp. She thrashed and wriggled, desperate to free herself, as the mouth opened in front of her, strings of saliva stretching from a top row to a bottom row of fangs. She held out her little piece of broken crutch, praying that if it swallowed her, the broken crutch would slice its throat from the inside and kill it, leaving both of them dead. I hid my face with Philby's leg, unable to watch.

"OH NO YOU DON'T!" I heard Jess yell. I looked up and saw Jess, unarmed, leap up and grab onto the lower jaw of the beast.

"NO!" Amanda fell to her knees, clawing at her own face. Tears had already started to stain my face.

Jess dangled from the beast's teeth, pulling herself into the mouth and bracing her feet behind the bottom lip and holding the upper jaw up with her hands. She grimaced in pain as the beast tried to chomp down on her, her back twisting and bending under the waist. It seemed like she was ready to give out when...

Maybeck decided to leap into the mouth as well! He dug his sharp bone weapon into the beast's tongue, causing it to shriek with pain. Using that time, Maybeck wrapped his arms around Jess and shoved both of them out of the roaring mouth. The beast released its grip on Charlene and she crumpled to the ground.

Its mouth closed, and its horrible black eyes widened. The mouth opened again and a sea of blood poured onto Charlene, Jess, and Maybeck. It had swallowed the bone! It stumbled backwards, clawing at its throat and running back into the forest.

And then, the only sounds were our pants. I slowly rose to my feet, clutching Philby's arm, staring at Jess, Charlene, and Maybeck.

They were disgusting. All three of them, coated in a layer of saliva and blood, still sat on the ground in awe and terror. Then Charlene collapsed, falling on top of Maybeck in a limp hug. Maybeck didn't move, except for staring at the place where the monster once stood, mouth open, gasping for breath. Jess rose to her hands and knees, shaking before falling to her side, curling up next to Maybeck. Maybeck looked down at Jess, putting a hand on her shoulder, then at Charlene, putting his other hand on her shoulder. Then, he craned his neck and looked over his shoulder at us. His face was pulled back into a huge grin before he fell backwards with exhaustion, and I was able to finally release the breath I had been holding the entire time.
