"Reina-chan!"
"Hai, Tenten?"
"Can you fix my costume?"
Reina smiles and kneels in front of the girl next to the main strip of the Halloween fair. She sees the straw stuck under her hat is starting to fall out. She tries to fix it then ponders.
"Well, do you have to be a scarecrow? Or can we change your costume a little?"
"What are you going to do to it?" Tenten's eyes are wide.
"I was thinking we could drop the straw and cut off the legs of the overalls. We could make you into a country girl." Reina grins. "It would still work with the painted freckles on your cheeks. What do you think of that?"
Tenten ponders that for a moment. "Could we just roll up the pant legs?"
"Sure we can!" Reina smiles and starts to roll up the pants as Tenten fixes her hat.
"Good because I don't want to be left behind."
"Hm? Left behind from what?"
"On the hayride!"
Reina looks surprised. "I thought you were too afraid of the spooky forest to go on the wagon?"
"Hai, but…" She hesitates, "but I don't want to always be afraid of it. So, I want to go on the spooky hayride this year."
Reina smiles warmly at her. "Alright, then! Do you want to go on that ride first?"
"Well…" Tenten hesitates. "Maybe we could play a game first?"
Reina smiles, "But the longer you wait… won't you just get more scared?"
"Yeah…" Tenten sighs.
"Then do you want to go get in line for the hayride now before it gets dark?"
The young girl hesitates; she hadn't even considered it being dark later. Just the idea of spooky things hiding in the dark sends chills down her spine, and she shivers. "Maybe we should go now… before it gets dark."
"I think that's a good choice," Reina chuckles and walks with her to the far end of the fair. They get in line and wait to have enough people to start the ride. Soon Reina helps her charge up into the back of the wagon then swings up after her. They sit on a bale of hay together as the other riders take their seats around the girls.
"Are you ready, Tenten?" Reina asks the nervous girl as the driver takes his seat behind the horses.
"I-I guess so…" She squeaks when the wagon jolts forward, eyes wide with anticipation. Soon the wagon rolls forward, drawn by the well-groomed horses. The rest of the group chatters excitedly as the wagon nears the forest. Reina glances over and, upon noting the young girl's discomfort, reaches out to take her hand. Tenten looks up, and Reina smiles, giving her hand a little squeeze.
"Hey, it's okay. I promise."
Tenten nods and looks around the path; trees stand tall on either side of the wagon, and dry leaves crunch beneath the slowly rolling wheels. The wagon creaks lightly as the passengers shift excitedly and soon enough…
"AH!" Tenten squeals and covers her eyes as a ghost pops out and swoops above the group. Witches cackle and beasts growl as the wagon rolls by. Skeletons drop down on either side of the wagon and seem to dance in the wind. Not too much later, the wagon swings around and returns to the starting point. Reina looks down and finds Tenten is still hiding her eyes.
"So what did you think?" Tenten slowly peeks out from between her fingers before giving a shaky laugh.
"It wasn't so bad…."
"Want to go again?"
"… No."
