A mini-series of [reader-insert] drabbles/ficlets of the Naruto babies being shown various Halloween traditions. Part 14. For ShadowVixxen's All Hallows Eve contest.
"Come on, Kankuro! We're going to be late!" Arianna calls up the stairs. His brother and sister have long since been ready to go to the Halloween party, but he seems to be purposely lagging. Huffing lightly, the strawberry-blonde – who has donned a furry grey hat with wolf ears, a tail, and furry arm and leg warmers – goes up the stairs once more, leaving the little panda and witch waiting by the door.
"Kankuro, come out, and let's go!" Arianna calls as she knocks on his bedroom door.
"I'm not going!" At least she got an answer this time, even if it's not the one she wanted.
"Well at least open the door and talk to me about it!" Arianna leans against the doorframe. "I'm not moving until you at least do that. And my staying here means Gaara and Temari get grumpy waiting by the door. And you know what happens when Gaara gets grumpy…"
She hears a sigh before the door cracks open, one dark eye peering out at her.
"Further. I'm not having a conversation with your eyeball."
He heaves a sigh and tugs on the door, letting it swing open on its own as he walks back to his desk. Arianna can see he has been fiddling with his first puppet, likely trying to repair the leg Gaara accidentally pulled off. She waits for him to sit down and face her. "Alright now… what's this about, Kankuro?"
"I'm not going, Ari."
"I heard that, but I want to know why."
He's quiet for a moment, toying with the dismembered leg. "… I don't have a costume."
"What are you talking about? We went out and bought a superhero costume last week."
"… I don't like it anymore."
Arianna frowns and pulls the spare chair up to sit next to him. "Do you want to tell me why?"
"… No."
"… That wasn't really a request."
"… It doesn't fit." His voice is so soft that Arianna can barely hear him. "It's too tight. It looks bad."
"I see." She smiles lightly. "So you're uncomfortable with how tight it is."
"… Yeah. So… I'm not going."
"What if I can make a costume out of your current clothing?" She eyes the baggy black clothes.
"… How?"
"You have to trust me first."
"… Okay."
Arianna grins and stands up, going to his closet and searching for a black t-shirt. "Put on your cowl and get out your kabuki paint."
He slowly complies as she stretches the shirt out on his bed. She carefully begins to twist the shirt into a long roll, using a few bits of spare twine from his desk to tie it securely shut. She grins and hums to herself as she turns her attention to the paint, carefully dotting his nose and drawing streaks on his cheeks. When she's finished, she picks up the rolled t-shirt and hooks it to the back of his pants.
"There, now you have a costume."
"… What am I?" He turns to peer into the mirror as Arianna speaks gleefully.
"A big black cat!"
Kankuro stares at his reflection for a moment before sighing. "… I guess it will do. Thanks, Ari."
Arianna grins and leads him out to go downstairs, and as they head out to the Halloween party, Kankuro can't help but smile.
Meow.
