Jallison in Wonderland
Chapter 9: Pool of Tears
Allison immediately fell to Jack's side to render aide. She called out his name and when he didn't respond, fear gripped her. This wasn't supposed to happen. They were supposed to leave this Eureka; no harm, no foul.
As she watched the gentle rise and fall of his chest, from the corner of her eye, she saw Nathan approach once again.
"Nathan stop it. It's not what you think. You don't understand."
"Don't under…" Nathan shut his eyes tight in an ernest attempt to regain his composure.
Tess rushed to Nathan and laid her hands on his chest in an effort to help calm him.
"I don't know who you think I am Allison, but a fool I'm not. For the last few weeks I've know somethings changed between us, but I would have never suspected this. Well, shame on me for being so stupid, and that's something I thought I'd never say."
He let out a long haggard breath before he continued. "Since the day I met you there's only been one woman for me. I would never have put anyone or anything before you. I should have realized you and Jack's phony hatred for each other was just a ploy. Well, you really fooled us, didn't you."
Tess who had been standing by quietly on the sidelines at last chimed in.
"Allie, I don't know what to say." Tears began to stream down her cheeks. "You were my best friend and I believed in my heart that Jack was the love of my life. The both of you betrayed me and I'll never forgive you for this."
Jack began to rouse, as Allison pleaded their case.
"This all seems like a nightmare to you, but I assure you, this is the way it's supposed to be. Jack and I should have told you from the very beginning…."
Rage filled Nathan's voice, "What that you and Jack, my wife and best friend were fucking."
"No!" Allison gently lowered Jack's head to the floor and stood to face them. "Jack and I don't belong here. This is not our reality."
Tess scoffed at the absurdity of her statement. "Oh, please Allison. Don't insult us by trying to make up some bullshit story. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
Then all hell broke loose as Allison, Tess and Nathan began talking over each other. Each trying to impress upon each other their own perspective regarding the situation, all the while Jack slowly began to come out of his stupor.
A wild scene indeed, the saving grace for them all had been Henry's arrival.
Yelling over top of them all, he demanded a halt to their arguing and asked them all to sit and listen to reason.
"I knew this would happen." Henry said aloud to no one particular.
He rushed to Jack's side and one hand propped underneath his lower back, helped him to his feet and over to the couch beside Allison, where he processed to rest his head in his hands.
"Thanks for that pal." Jack aimed the proclamation at Nathan sarcastically.
"There's more where that came from."
Henry couldn't put up with this anymore, "Shut up, the both of you and all of you listen because I have a story to tell."
Henry then went on to detail all he knew up to this point involving Jack and Allison, including his own disbelief at their assertion that this was indeed not their timeline. He explained who they really were and how things had gone horribly wrong.
Tess crossed her arms in open defiance at Henry's account of the events.
Nathan asked. "Henry, you knew about all of this?"
"Yes, Nathan I did. And that's not Jack and Allison. Well, not our Jack and Allison."
Nathan appeared dumbfounded. "Our, Jack. You hate Jack."
Henry turned to Jack, a smirk pulling at the corners of his mouth. "That's not entirely true."
"And you couldn't confide in me?" Nathan looked defeated and it broke Allison's heart. "None of you could trust Tess or me with the truth."
Allison rose and stood in front of Nathan who'd begun fervently pacing the room, and took his hands in hers.
"We didn't think we'd be here this long. We didn't want to hurt you or Tess. Nathan, in our world, Jack and I are married and we're going to have a baby. We just want to go home."
"Married? Pregnant! God, I'll have to drink bleach to scrub that image out of my mind."
"Really?"
They turned to see Jack seated in an upright position.
"You have to admit, good buddy, this is hard to believe."
The snarky use of good buddy didn't bypass Jack.
"What's so hard to believe? You know me and you know Allison. We're good people."
"You used to be." Nathan plucked his hands from Allison's grasp. "This is all semantics anyway. The main issue is that you lied to us, no matter who you are or where you're from."
"I can attest to the validity of their assertion," Henry offered up. "Allison and Jack's DNA signatures are altered somewhat. It probably has to do with the effects of whats occurred to them in their alternate universe."
They all sat in a silent daze, none of them sure what to say next. Of course Jack would be the one to pipe up.
"I think I have a concussion."
Both Nathan and Tess answered in unison. "Good."
"So," Nathan ventured on, not sure of how much more he wanted to hear, "what were are lives like in your Eureka."
Allison went on to tell the tale of her and Nathan's life, choosing not to leave out the part of his untimely death. She wanted him to realize not only was he a good man who'd sacrifice himself for everyone's wellbeing there, but he could do the same here. It was a huge request to ask.
"I can't believe this." He stammered on. "So, not only do I lose you here, but there as well. Seems thats my fate in life."
Tess pondered. "What about us, Jack?"
Jack wisely decided not to tell her of their courtship. What would be the point of hurting her any further? So he went with the story that they were just very good friends.
"Where do we go from here and more importantly, how do we get you two back home?" Nathan asked.
Allison whispered a silent thank you to him.
"Firstly, I don't want the children to know about this so we'll just have to continue on with life as usual until we can get you back."
"I'm sorry," Tess began, "but I can't live with Jack knowing the truth."
"Look Tess, this isn't an ideal situation for any of us. I'll stay in the spare room until this is all figured out. Okay?"
"Okay."
Just then, panic once again gripped Allison. "But what if we can't get back home?"
No one spoke as they sat there, shattered spirits, afraid of the realization.
"Allison, do you trust me?"
"Implicitly, Nathan."
"Then believe that we'll get you home."
The ominous spell was broken as Fargo exuberantly strolled into the room.
"Um, Dr. Deacon, can I speak to you outside about that, thing." His head gesturing toward the door.
"It's okay Fargo, they know."
"Oh, well then, I think I've found a solution to the scenario you presented."
Sigh's of relief emitted from the group.
"I'm sorry, did I miss something?" Fargo pondered.
His question was met with five pairs of eyes, heads shaking simultaneously in his direction.
Jack said what everyone was thinking. "Fargo, don't you ever change."
