After nearly a year of progress, and even though a lot of that time was spent with a horrid case of writer's block, I have FINALLY completed my RADIANCE trilogy. I want to thank all of my reader's that have been there with me since the prologue of Bright Horror, and all of those who have just joined me recently. Thanks for all of your reviews and support you have given me.
Looking back, I have to say that this trilogy is where my writing has most improved. I see that I was writing 700 word chapters back then, and now I have written one that was, what, 5000?! I am so grateful and honored to have improved that much in a span of less than a year.
So again, thank you, and I do not own Warriors.
It was moments like taking time to feel the breeze ruffling your fur and noticing the gorgeous change in color of the leaves in the leaf-fall that had always been the most special to Sunmask. She realized that taking it all in at once was a weak point for her, and whenever she actually took some time to observe the tiniest things, she was most grateful for all that she had.
She even took Clanlife piece by piece. To her, it wasn't just being a warrior, it was the arousing suspicion that struck her whenever she would go on a border patrol; it was the mingling scents of prey when she'd hunt; it was the rush of adrenaline that would course through her veins when she sunk her claws into the shoulders of an enemy. It was the pride in herself for being named a warrior; it was the pride in her Clan when they faced hardship successfully; it was the fear whenever danger or difficulty grasped their throats, and the relief and triumph of coming out of it alive.
And when, she would piece it together, she'd realize that the image of being a true warrior was too big to really admire. There were so many elements of serving her Clan, so many in fact that no matter how much time she took to dust off each slice, she would never be able to grasp the entire purpose. She knew it rested within every true warrior there had ever been, but even those as pure as the legendary cats of the ancient Clans, can never feel it fully, and that was something she was thankful for. It made it easier to do her thing.
Now she laid in the nursery, looking for those little things right then. She counted the the times her kits' noses twitched in their sleep.
After the battle, Soottail had asked to speak with Sunmask. He told her that no matter what she chose, he would always love her. Volefur had said something very similar after they named their kits, but what made Sunmask realize that she loved Soottail back was that she hadn't given a thought of the RiverClan tom when he spoke to her those words. Even though she still had feelings for the black and gray tom, it took her a while to,really accept him as her mate. They'd been through so much together, and most of that was spent in heart ache and anger, but after three moons of being unsure of herself, Sunmask finally took him as her mate.
And now, they had kits together, the kits she watched sleep beside her. The tom, with a dark, ashy gray pelt and green eyes, was called Creekkit. He was an ambitious kit, and Sunmask could tell he would be a strong, loyal warrior to ShadowClan. And he had a sister, a pure white little she-kit with round blue eyes. Soottail had originally suggested the name of Icekit. Sunmask had disagreed though. She wanted the name to be something that sounded warmer, as the Clan was still recovering from the dark battle that had plagued them just moons earlier. Sunmask had stared at her daughter for many moments, before suggesting the name that she was now called by.
Radiantkit.
Soottail had given a simple smile, and nodded. When the Clan had heard the name, they had all seemed rather shocked, but they accepted it, for who could turn down one who was named after one of their saviors? But Sunmask would make sure that her daughter wasn't treated any different than any other cat.
Radiantkit was much quieter than her brother, and much more patient. More than once, she had asked Sunmask about the stars, and what meaning they held. She took this as her sign that her daughter would go into the field of medicine, and become their first official medicine cat after the battle.
Once the fight was over, Sunmask was returning to camp when she spotted a ginger cat through the trees. To her fury, she saw that the cat was Flowerpaw. Sunmask would have attacked the traitor right then if she had not seen the she-cat's face.
It was a bloody mess. Scratches had sliced her muzzle open, revealing her back teeth, and her right eye was missing. Blood dripped from her chin, staining the ground, and forming a marked path behind her. She was dragging herself away from the scene, and Sunmask wondered where she was going. She sluggishly followed, stepping over the drops of blood on the ground. After only moments though, Flowerpaw collapsed, shaking, and within heartbeats was motionless. After Sunmask reported this to her Clan, a search began for Stormwhisker, but after a day of looking around the territory, and even a little bit beyond, they could not find him anywhere. They all had assumed he fled after Soottail dealt with him.
Without a medicine cat, ShadowClan requested that ThunderClan or RiverClan help them whenever it was needed, since they wouldn't survive without anyone to heal them. An elder of RiverClan, Echofrost had agreed to temporarily move to ShadowClan until another medicine cat was found. She had been RiverClan's previous medicine cat before she retired, and judging by what she's see with Radiantkit, Sunmask bet that Echofrost would have an apprentice by the time her kits were six moons old.
Many other things had changed since the battle. Ravenstar and Cherrystar agreed to no longer launch the attacks on ShadowClan, and apologized to them for their insensitivity. ShadowClan wasn't that quick to forgive them, and even still there was a fragile stability between them. They started up going to Gatherings every moon again, and the only thing that could be talked about for two moons was recovery from the battle. Now though, it's become more personal, and the Clans proceeded with their indelicate matters, and Sunmask was happy to hear one night that Volefur had kits with a RiverClan she-cat. She remembered sharing a brief look with him. She smiled, and then carried on.
Unfortunately, though, WindClan had grown quite hostile and reserved, even to the Clans they had once been allied to. They seemed to take every comment as a challenge, spatting and hissing at them in reply. This especially saddened Sunmask, since Shadeglare - or rather Shadestar - now led WindClan. His personality seemed to have drastically changed. While he was normally fierce and clever, he seemed to have grown incredibly pessimistic and defensive. Sunmask assumed that he wasn't ready to take on the role of a leader, and every night she would sit and pray to StarClan that things would turn out for him. His Clan was healthy, they just needed some time to calm down.
Within ShadowClan, Pouncestar had taken leadership, and thankfully, he seemed to take his new rank very seriously. He also seemed to have become less aloof, and more open. Sunmask thought that perhaps, Radiantmask had kept her promise and was meeting with him in his sleep every other night or so.
Furledwhisker had been chosen as deputy the morning after the battle, and over the course of a moon, five cats had joined ShadowClan. Hollow, of the Black Horror had pleaded Pouncestar to be allowed to join. She no longer trusted the outside world, and needed a level-headed and warm community to surround her. Pouncestar agreed once Sunmask convinced him that Hollow could be trusted, and she had earned a warrior name, Hollowsky. Later on, a couple of loners, Snowflake and Brownie came to the territory, needing a place to raise their two kits. They had also been named warriors, with the names of Snowleaf and Brownshade. Their kits had just recently been made apprentices, Fogpaw and Timberpaw.
Their numbers still were lower than they other Clans, they had gained the five new Clancats, but had lost both medicine cats and Curvefang, who was found dead in the forest, killed by an unknown Black Horror recruit, but eventually things would look up. After all, Ashpaw had become a warrior, and was named Ashfoot. It seemed depressing to Sunmask that only one of Mouseflight and Furledwhisker's four kits managed to earn their full name, but luckily, other than Ashfoot, three more apprentices became warriors.
Pinetail and Clearwater were named at the time that they shoulder have been, but their was doubt that Foreverpaw would ever become a warriors, because of the wound on her shoulder. It got infected pretty bad, and at times it was expected that she wouldn't live, but thanks to Echofrost, she healed up and finished her training and was awarded with the title of Foreverlight, and it appeared to Sunmask that she was getting close to Ashfoot.
Long story short, the Clans were recovering. Perhaps it was shortly, and perhaps they weren't doing it together, but that is how it's always been. They'd come together to fight the one thing they all cherished, and go home to lick their wounds, carrying on with their lives until new danger struck. Sunmask was happy she left her Twoleg home all those seasons ago. Life wasn't close to perfect where she was, but all of it was worth it to experience the good things in life.
She watched as Radiantkit's leg twitched and as Creekkit's tail flicked. She counted the movements they made in their sleep, dreaming of chasing butterflies around and chasing enemies away. Soon enough these dreams would become reality, no matter how small those moments were compared to everything else around them.
Sunmask felt a light flick on her ear and gazed up to look into familiar green eyes. She smiled at her mother, and her mother smiled back. Like the soft coo of a dove, Radiantmask whispered to her.
Like I promised, I would always be here.
Maybe life was too large to fit all of the pieces of it together, but it was also too short not to try.
Thank you all so much for all of the support. I'm really happy with how this turned out, even though I hit a few bumps in the road. :) There you have it, Bright Horror, Sunny Darkness, and Shaded Fate, finished. I love you all, and hope you have a great day/night!
