A/N: So I left this for so long that I had to go back and re-read the entire thing. I then realized that I'm a shit writer and a lot of my views on characters have changed, so expect a lot of differences in this chapter from the other ones. I might go back and completely re-write this entire thing maybe never. God, why am I even attempting to do this again?
Chapter 7: Realizations are made and Personalities take a U-turn
~~ "I'm not doing anything suspicious.. Really!" – Sakon ~~
As Kat and Link were walking up the small sandy slope up to the town of Windfall, both of the pre-teens let out a gasp at the enormity of the town they were seeing. People were everywhere and there was so much hustle and bustle that it made their heads spin.
"My goodness, I haven't seen so many people in such a small space before in my life!" Kat exclaimed.
Link looked over to her, surprised, was it just him or was she completely different from the loud immature girl of five minutes ago? Said girl glanced over to him and smiled, "Don't worry kiddo, I may be trapped in the body of a malnourished twelve- year-old, but I've got the smarts of someone with eighteen years of experience under their belt"
Link stared at her for a minute in stark white shock. "Are- are you okay Kat?" He edged away from her slightly. This was not right, this was not cool. There was a daemon possessing his first friend (by his standards of course) and he needed to do something about it fast.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be? You high or something?" She suddenly reached into her pocket "Oh, golly gum drops, I've lost my pencil. The HSAM (Hyrulean Society of Art and Magic) is going to fine me the soul of my deceased mother and the kill my resolve for good measure."
At this point her companion was so confused that his mouth and brain couldn't form any coherent thought. He watched her dumbfounded as she suddenly blinked and her jaw went slack.
"Hey Link? Remember how I morphed into my older self to show you I wasn't a twelve-year-old nuisance?" Link hesitated "Um- uh- dyuh- yes?"
Kathleen promptly slapped herself square in the forehead. "I'm an idiot, a goddess damned idiot. A fucking sopor infested think pan. WHY!? DIDN'T I JUST STAY! LIKE THAT IN THE FIRST FUCKING PLACE!?" She concentrated and to no avail she stayed short and sickly as she had been when she was twelve. At this revelation she threw herself down in the grass face first an wailed. "I'M A FAILURE TO THE MAGIC USING FEMALE RACE!"
Poor Link had no idea what to do and people were staring, especially the big burly men at the docks. Their glares worried him and he could swear that they were beginning to head this way. "Uh-uh, Kat?"
"What!? Can't you see I'm wallowing in self-pity here?!"
"Well, yeah," Link said in a desperate tone "But there are some scary guys walking this way so we gotta go before they-"
"Little missy, is this boy bothering you?" A gruff deep voice interjected. A large shadow seemed to encompass the area surrounding the two pre-teens. Two faces, one scared shitless, the other covered in snot and sand looked up at the three burly sailors above them.
Kat quickly pushed herself up. Wiping her face off with her now tattered and sun bleached sleeve, she cleared her throat and mumbled "No, everything's fine"
The sailor in front leaned in closer and gave Link the stink eye. "You sure little missy? We don't take any boys bullying little girls." The others nodded in agreement.
Link looked about ready to piss himself. Kat nudges herself in front of him "Uhm, well, actually, I'm the one who bullies him, s-so back off 'kay?" Her voice wavered. "A-and even if he were picking on me, I can handle myself"
The burly man in red leaned back and quirked his studded eyebrow. "If you're sure?". At Kat's nod the man shrugged to the others and they walked off. The two young ones found their legs trembling; Link put a hand on Kat's shoulder.
"I don't think I've ever met men as scary as those three" Link lets out a nervous giggle that Kat returned.
"We should go find the sail" Kat turned and grabbed Link's hand as they set off into the crowd.
~~"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" –Happy Mask Salesman~~
Kat could feel her eyebrow twitching and her jaw tensing ever steadily. She couldn't believe it. In-fucking-credible. Link and she, had somehow, gotten separated.
She stared around the area she was in, it was relatively unpopulated. There were a few buildings in the round area she was in. A school and what appeared to be the entrance to the windmill. Glancing at the people, there was a very beautiful woman standing with a sort of expectant expression on her face, a group of kids that looked to be a few years her junior and a man walked past her in red overalls.
She sighed and went to go sit on the steps nearby in front of the windmill door. "Can this day get any worse?"
Apparently it could. The group of boys had noticed her.
"Hey, lady!"
"Huh?"
"Hey! Yeah, yeah, Lady!"
"Wha?"
"What's with that weird outfit?"
"Hey! I-"
"Huh, huh, you smell funny"
"Excuse me!?" At this Kat stood. "Who are you guys?" At this question she immediately felt regret for asking it.
"Yeeeeeah! We're the Killer Bees!" The one that appeared to be the leader shouted.
"Yeeeah! Buzz Buzz!" The others added.
Kat could swear her entire eye was twitching now. This was soooooo, not fair. Looking at all the little boys reminded her of some of the little boys from castle town back in her time. The thought made her a little sad. She swallowed to ease the tightness in her throat "Uh…. Well, nice to meet you I guess."
Her eyes flicked to one of the exits out into town, she didn't have time for this! To her relief, as flash of green ran past on of the arches. Pushing past the boys she ran after it. "Sorry boys! I got a fairy boy to chase!"
~~ "There! On the horizon!" –King of Red Lions~~
Link was starting to grow worried. Kat was nowhere to be found and he had the sail. Should he go without her? Where would she stay? She was so... weird. Her mind seemed to change constantly.
He looked in his pouch as some of his newly acquired items. The sail, bought from the odd little man at the stall. A… Tingle Tuner? Given to him by even odder man in the tight green suit for busting him out of jail. Then, the pictograph box, it was beautiful. Link wasn't sure what he had expected in the damp disgusting tunnels behind the prison, but it sure wasn't this!
He decided to head back to the beach near where the King of Red Lions was waiting, maybe Kat would be there, or maybe she'd show up. Deciding he'd get there faster by running, he set off at a steady but quick pace to the shore.
As he passed by some arches he heard a shout and was tackled from behind. "argh!"
"Link, hold still, it's just me" He felt someone holding his arms, so he struggled more.
"Link, it's me Kat! Stop moving for Din's sake!" He heard he sigh in relief as he stopped moving.
With his face pressed against the ground it was hard to speak but he managed to get a muffled "Gerroff!" and she quickly stood up and offered her hand.
He took it and stood, brushing himself off. "Why couldn't you just call out for me like a normal person?" He growled out in irritation.
She then had the gall to look sheepish as she rubbed the bottom of her nose. "Uhm, well…. I didn't think of that…"
Link sighed and they began the trip down the slope to the boat. This was going to be a long, annoying journey.
