Sorry that it took so long to update, life has been busy. Moved my youngest across country for college and have been volunteered to take on a co workers work load due to having to deal with some family issues. Needless to say when I think it will slow down it just gets busier. I hope you enjoy this chapter
She had sat stoic on his couch for a large portion of the night and her breath caught in her throat at every movement outside the door in anticipation of him arriving home. But that was not to happen. Finally lack of sleep overtook her and she convinced herself that closing her eyes for a few minutes would be okay.
Her dreams were unsettling; they bounced from Booth being shot to her being shot to them being apart on opposite sides of the world. Her hands and face twitched in between happiness and concern while she dreamed of him.
He was trapped behind a steel door and was banging on it screaming for her to help him and although she tried, she could not open the door. She watched helplessly as water engulfed him.
"BOOTH!" Brennan jolted awake, sat up and frantically looked around while her mind processed where she was and that she had only been dreaming. Breathing hard she shakily got to her feet and made her way to his bathroom where she applied cool water to her face.
She starred at herself in the mirror her eyes coming to rest on her mouth. She had never seen it look so sad, never had she seen her face look so sad. She had always been so good at not allowing herself to feel, that she found herself both fascinated and horrified by her appearance.
She made her way back to the living room and the clock on the wall made the sadness her face showed be felt, it was 4:15am. It was obvious Booth would not be home tonight and the question she wanted answered was answered by his absence. It was time to move on; it was time to begin healing.
Brennan called for a cab and waited just inside the door to the street until it arrived, and due to the hour her wait was not long. Once settled in the cab she gave the driver her address and looked back towards the darkened window of Booth's apartment.
She stared out the window of the cab while the streets lights played across her face. "Too beautiful to be so sad" the drive observed in broken English.
Brennan eyes met his in the mirror "I'm sorry"
"You too beautiful to be so sad, he must be a fool."
Brennan gave him a small smile "Thank you" She turned and continued to stare at the world passing by outside of the cab.
"I saw him" the driver interrupted her again. Little did Brennan know this was the same driver that had carried Booth to her apartment earlier that evening.
"What"
"I saw him, tonight, he look as sad as you." His dark eyes watched her in the mirror
"I'm sorry you must have me mistaken with someone else, I don't have a companion."
"I might be, but I no think so. He gave me same address you gave."
"I live in an apartment building; there are several single men that live there."
"I am sorry, beg your pardon."
Brennan smiled at him again "it's fine" The rest of the ride to her building was in silence.
"Good morning Doctor Brennan" she was cheerfully greeted by the doorman as he held the door for her.
"Good morning Jeff, how are you this morning?" She tried to smile a convincing smile
"Very good ma'am, did Agent Booth find you last night?" his words stopped her in her tracks
"Booth was looking for me?"
"Yes ma'am he came by here rather late, I apologize I never paid attention to the time." He furrowed his brow "Come to think of it, I never saw him leave. He was rather intoxicated…"
"Thank you Jeff" she rambled as she rushed towards the elevator. Her heart sprang to life in her chest as she impatiently waited for the elevator to arrive. She was a mixture between excited and panic, what if he did want her, what then, she didn't know how, but not having him at all would be worse, then the panic set in, What if he didn't want her at all. She shook her head, she needed to wait for the facts, she busied herself with getting her keys out of her small handbag. Her shaking hands could not properly grasp the keys and the elevator had still not arrived, how could it be so slow before 5:00 in the morning.
Booth sat up and immediately grabbed his head, letting out a rush of air he forced himself off the couch and into her guest bathroom where he found some much needed aspirin. He splashed some water on his face and then quietly crept down the hall to see if she might have returned home while he was passed out on her couch. He was disappointed to see her bed empty, he took a deep breath and returned to the living room to gather up his things, it was time to move on.
Booth was just about to open the door when he heard the key in the lock. He took a deep breath as the door opened and there she stood, her clothing disheveled, makeup smudged and her hair a mess. His heart sank to the pit of his stomach, knowing she had been with Gibbs and seeing the aftermath was just too much.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be here, I just… just…"
"Booth" she smiled for a moment and took a step towards him, he took a step back.
"I thought… you ..." he raised his eyes to hers and "this was a mistake" he took a step to the side to walk around her and she reached for his arm.
"What was a mistake?" He had stopped directly at her side, her still holding onto his bicep turned to face him, he looked down at the floor.
"This… me thinking you… it was stupid."
"What were you thinking?"
He turned his head to the side still looking at the floor and chewed on this lower lip for a moment before he brought his eyes back up to hers once more. Once his eyes came to rest on hers the sinking feeling became almost overpowering. "It doesn't matter." He pulled his arm away from her, the anger thinking of another man touching her in the way he wanted so badly to do was overpowering. His jaw twitched and before he could stop, the venom came spilling out "Seems you satisfied you biological urge."
"Booth, what are you talking about? I don't understand."
"Oh come on Bones, you think you can waltz in here at five in the morning looking like that and expect me to believe nothing happened with you and Gibbs."
"I wasn't with Gibbs last night Booth." Her mind was reeling, she didn't understand this change in him
"Oh, so who DiNozzo, or let me guess maybe the good Doctor, What was his name?"
"Booth, are you implying I was having sex?"
"Ding, Ding, Ding…" He squared his shoulders as he watched the hurt flash across her face before she put her mask back on.
She took a step away from him "I think you need to leave Booth" tears started to fall without her permission; she took a step towards him, then around him and opened the door.
He was hurting and he lashed out, something that was so uncharacteristic for him it made him ill when he saw the hurt he inflicted on her. "God, Bones. I'm sorry. I should …." he walked up to where she stood and looked at the top of her head "I don't know what made me… It doesn't matter, there is no excuse. I just… I'm sorry"
She nodded and he stepped across the threshold and he turned as she was closing the door. "Bones" She looked up and the sight of her tear stained face and red watery eyes struck him like a hard blow to the chest knocking the wind out of him. "Promise me something?"
"What?"
"Promise me you won't give up on love, because you deserve everything it has to offer."
She pulled her lips between her teeth and nodded as he turned towards the elevator. "Booth"
"Yeah" he turned back towards her
"Not that it is any of your business but I didn't have sex tonight." He nodded and started to turn when he heard the rest "I was at your apartment waiting for you to come home." He turned back just as her door shut and locked.
I hate making Booth the bad guy, but I needed him to be jealous and to do something stupid. Now to fix it.
