Chapter 21

Stefan was all that Rebekah wanted. He was charming and smart but most importantly he got along with Nik.

Her half-brother was a hard creature to understand and not many people liked him. Elijah, Rebekah's older brother, put up with Klaus, but didn't fully accept him. Rebekah saw that Stefan and Klaus formed a bond. It wasn't strong yet, but hopefully in time it would be.

Stefan and Rebekah were walking through a park close to the Mikealson apartment. It was a beautiful day and the sun shined in the blue sky.

Stefan came by her apartment to ask Nik if he might escort Rebekah on a walk through the park. Rebekah loved how formal he was being.

She was ready to go before Klaus could even grant his permission. Sometimes vampire speed was helpful.

The couple talked very little during their walk. It was a peaceful silence and neither of them found it awkward.

Stefan stopped walking as they approached a park bench. He motioned for Rebekah to sit as he did.

"Tell me sweetheart, do you like seeing me outside of Gloria's?" Stefan asked.

"Of course," Rebekah said. "I was actually wondering if you would accompany me to the ball I am throwing for my women's group."

"Hmm," Stefan said. "Well, you see, they don't have alcohol and-"

"And what, Mr. Salvatore? Do you require alcohol to stand my presence?" Rebekah said.

Stefan didn't say anything. He had a look on his face like he was actually considering the option of needing alcohol.

Rebekah hit him lightly.

"I'm joking, Rebekah." Stefan said putting his hands up in defense. "Alcohol just stops me from killing everyone all the time."

Rebekah supposed that was good. She had heard the stories of where he murdered families. He drained the bodies of blood and tore them apart. Hearings those stories made her more intrigued and she wanted to get to know him better. But she did not want him tearing apart her new human friends.

"So you will come with me?"

"Yes, I would love to be your escort, Miss Mikealson."

"My brother Elijah would like that you have manners," Rebekah said. She leaned bak and Stefna put his arm around her.

"That's good, but I don't show them very often."

"What were you like as a boy?" Rebekah asked. She looked out at the park. The trees lined the path. Flowers were in full bloom. Squirrels were chasing each other at the far end and a young boy with his mother was watching them.

"I was respectful of my parents. I was the youngest having an older brother and sister."

"I would love to have a sister," Rebekah said. She didn't like that she was the only girl in her family. She had hoped that one of her brothers would marry or find someone to spend life with, but she had not been successful. Her brothers believed that love is a weakness.

"My sister was nice, but she wasn't the best role model," Stefan said.

"I was close with my brother. I hated that he had enlisted for the army during the civil war. It separated us."

"And after you both turned you didn't stay with each other?" The thought of not being with family was scary for Rebekah. She was always with one of her brothers, but it was usually Klaus since he was the one with the daggers. She always wanted to make sure Klaus was not mad at her so he would not keep her in a coffin for decades at a time.

"No, we grew apart," Stefan said. "Besides, if he were here, I wouldn't be having any fun with you. I wouldn't be able to hold you in my arms at night and share a human with you during the day."

Rebekah smiled.

"Come on," Stefan said standing up. "Let's get you home before your brother sends out a search party."

Rebekah stood up and took Stefan's arm. "He wouldn't send out a search party, he would come himself and attack whoever was in his way."

"Stefan, tell me where you plan on going after Chicago?" Klaus asked.

"Well I never really pick a place to go before I'm finished with where I'm at. But I was planning on traveling Europe; see the sights there."

"Europe is a good place to go," Rebekah said.

The three of them met up at Gloria's later that evening. They sat at a booth together just drinking and talking.

"Where would you like to go next?" Klaus asked Rebekah.

"I don't know. I suppose I would like to somewhere south. I heard that it was very tropical, and I would love to feel the warmth." Rebekah said.

Klaus thought of the idea. He hadn't been to South America in sometime. He should go and scare the supernatural creatures down there so they are aware that he is powerful and he is their king.

"Let's not worry about the future," Stefan said. "Let's just relax on the now. And right now I need a drink." Stefan stood up and compelled and woman to follow him out of the speakeasy.

"He seems to always need blood," Klaus said.

"Nik, he is younger than us and he does not have the same restraint," Rebekah said taking a sip of her champagne.

"How much do you like him sister?"

"I like him very much," Rebekah said. She wanted to be careful with her words so she wouldn't upset her brother. Also so he would allow her to continue to see Stefan. Niklaus usually destroys Rebekah's love interests. "But, it's nothing serious. We are only going to be in Chicago for a short time, and I enjoy his company."

"Good. Don't make him anything more than entertainment," Klaus said.

"Relax, Nik, you and I both know that you like him. I saw the way the two of you were talking last night; practically brothers!" Rebekah said with a small chuckle.

"He is as you said, not in the same meaning, but he is entertainment," Klaus said.

Stefan then walked back to the table after having his bite to eat.

"The weather is changing, it's staying warmer later now," Stefan said as he sat down.

"That's good, then we can stay out later and you can walk me home," Rebekah said.

Klaus rolled his eyes at the love birds.

The trio laughed and talked some more and all of a sudden Rebekah gasped.

"What?" Klaus said ready to get up and attack.

"Look! Over there! He just went down on one knee. He is going to propose," Rebekah said squealing.

"Calm yourself, sister. Don't get excited over a love life that isn't even yours" Klaus said sitting back down.

Rebekah turned to watch the couple better. She used her supernatural hearing to catch what the man was saying.

Without Klaus knowing it, Stefan listened too.

"Marie-Claire," The man said. "I know you have not been in America long, but from the moment I met you, I know there was something special."

The girl, Marie-Claire, began to cry.

"You have changed me for the better, in the short time we have been together. I know I don't have your father's blessing, but let me go back to France with you. Let me ask your father. Please let me marry you. Marie-Claire, would you make me the luckiest man, and do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Marie Claire remained silent.

"Say yes already," Rebekah pleaded to herself. She loved happy endings.

Marie-Claire, through her arms around the man, and peppered his face in kisses. "Yes," she whispered, but Rebekah and Stefan were able to hear it.

Klaus then decided to interrupt the eavesdroppers. "Rebekah I don't know why you listen to that, it's not like you are going to get married."

"And why not Nik?" She asked.

"Because none of you choices ever work out" Klaus said.

"And why is that," Rebekah said. She was getting angry at her brother. "Is it because you kill them all? Why won't you let me be happy?"

Rebekah stood up and reached for Stefan's hand. "Come on, we're going. My idiotic brother can stay by himself."

Sorry, it's late. I had no time to update this week. It has been crazy I had to be a sub dance teacher at the last minute and I had to set up for a Halloween party at my work. That's just the start of my business, but you probably don't want to hear the rest…
