[Four Months Later]
A month ago Melissa's school counselor called. She wanted to know if she could meet with Melissa and I. I asked why. She doesn't answer. I told her I could the following day. I was very concerned. Melissa had been doing so well. I wasn't sure what could be wrong.
I asked David if he would go with me. He quickly agreed. When I arrived home in the evening I asked Melissa if she had any idea what was going on. She smiled and nodded. She wouldn't tell me anything except in was really good news.
I was so proud of her. She had done so well on her SAT's. She had also maintained a 4.0 GPA. I just couldn't imagine what was going on. I realized she may have gotten another scholarship. She had already been offered a partial scholarship to any Ivy League school. David told me to just relax.
David and I arrived early the next day. We talked quietly about the last case as we waited. Melissa arrived a short time later. We waited about another ten minutes. The counselor Ms. Down called us in.
"Hello nice to see you again Chief Strauss, Agent Rossi." Ms. Down greeted us.
"You as well." I responded.
"Melissa has done so well in her time at our school. Her SAT scores and GPA have blown us away. Two of her teachers approached me. They said Melissa is currently doing college work currently for credit." Ms. Down said.
"That is good news." I said not understanding why we were here.
"I have spoken to all of Melissa's teachers. I also spoke to her former teachers as well as servile colleges. After all of this it was decided to give Melissa the opportunity to finish her Senior year early." Ms. Down explained to us.
"Mom I have already did my writing port folio. I also went ahead and took all the test including finals. The local junior college offered me the chance to start my degree now. I will be able to take on line classes." Melissa stated.
"She needs your permission to do all of this. What do you think?" Ms. Down asked me.
I looked at Melissa. I was once again reminded at her brilliance. I knew all of these steps would get her close to her dream of the Ivy League. I looked at David. He was smiling proudly. He nodded at me as though he could hear my thoughts.
"Melissa I am so proud of you. I say yes to all of it." I said hugging Melissa.
"Thank you Mom." She replied.
[One Month Later]
JJ and Will offered to have a party for Melissa. Melissa officially received her diploma. Since Melissa wouldn't be doing the cap and gown part I quickly agreed. During the party Melissa said she had an important announcement.
"Thank you all for being here. JJ, Will thank you for hosting this lovely party. Mom thank you for all you have done for Molly and me. And Dave thank you for being a real Father to me. I have some good news to share with everyone." Melissa rambled.
"Get on with it Sis." Garrett yelled.
"I have received my acceptance letters. My top choices are Harvard, Yale, and Cornell." Melissa said.
"Which did you choose?" I asked.
"One of them offered me a full scholarship including books. They also offered child care." Melissa said.
"Tell us." David said to Melissa.
"I'm going to Yale." Melissa yelled.
"I'm so proud of you. I will miss you and Molly so much." I responded trying not to cry.
"You won't have time to miss us. We'll be home for long weekends and breaks." Melissa said.
I started thinking Melissa and Molly would be gone in less than six months. I would miss them so much. I realized I would be in that big house alone. I felt both happy and sad.
