Chapter 4
Totally original chapter. For those of you who don't know, I edited chapter 3 so you might want to reread it. I'm going to try and keep it all in first person, but I may slip into third every once and a while if I don't catch myself. Enjoy.
Riley's POV
I was running down a dark hallway. I had no idea where it led, just that it led away from the horror behind me. I heard gunshots and screaming behind me. I just kept running and running. Then I heard another gunshot. I felt a searing pain in my back before collapsing.
I sat straight up in bed. I looked to my left. Ben and Abigail were sleeping. I looked down at my shirt which was covered in sweat. I got out of bed and walked toward the bathroom. I turned the sink on and splashed some cold water onto my face. I looked in the mirror and realized just how bad the bruise on my neck was. It was a combination of greens, blues, browns, and purples.
I shook my head and went back to splashing myself. When I looked up again I saw Ian's reflection in the mirror. I jumped back and fell onto the floor. When I looked toward the door no one was there. Ben and Abigail came running in.
"Riley are you alright?" Ben asked. I nodded quickly. When I looked up at the door again, Ian was standing there.
"Guys" I said, but it was too late. Ian shot twice. One hit Abigail, and the other hit Ben. Then one came speeding toward me.
I sat up in bed. The sheets were curled around me and I was sweating like a hog. I looked over at the bed next to me. Ben and Abigail were both awake, and looking at me.
"You ok, Riley?" Abigail asked. I nodded.
"Could you, umm..." I couldn't get the words out, "could you lock the door please?"
"It's already locked. It's been locked since we got here" Ben said.
"Riley" Abigail asked, "what were you dreaming about?"
"Death." I responded, "And Ian, but mostly death"
"Riley. We have to go now. Get to the Sphinx before Ian does" Ben told me. I nodded and got out of bed slowly. My back hurt from my jump from the van. After I crashed into Ian I fell onto the ground. It hurt. I went to crack my neck, but I couldn't move my head without excruciating pain. I slowly pulled my shirt back on and put on my shoes. I saw my suitcase lying at my feet.
"You guys go I'll meet you in the lobby" I told them
"But what if Ian" Abby started
"Ian won't be able to make it out unless he goes through the lobby. JUst keep an eye on the elevator and stairs" I said. The two nodded and walked out of the room. I unzipped my suitcase. Inside were my clothes, and something else. I dug through my bag until I found my blazer. I shoved my hand in the pocket and my hand closed around the wrinkled envelope. I pulled it out and shoved it into my shoe. I stood up and ran out the door.
I met Ben and Abigail in the lobby. They were waiting impatiently for me. I smiled and we were on our way.
"So what's the game plan for today?" I asked. It's my treasure, but Ban still does this whole thing better than I do.
"Well. We go to the Sphinx, and we try to find a way to get into the back, without tripping any security alarms." he told me. I nodded. I was going to need to look at it to see what kind of security there was. It's not like we were going to be able to walk right on over to the back of the Great Sphinx of Giza and look for a large tunnel.
When we arrived, we parked and paid for tickets. It was $90 for the three of us to look a the Sphinx. It was surrounded by an electric fence with barbed wire at the top. I looked down and saw my shoe was untied. I bent down to tie it. I looked over through the fence and saw heat sensors. Then I looked at the Sphinx itself. It has small sensors on it. That might be an issue.
After I finished tying my shoe the three of us walked around the back, "So Riley what did you find. What kind of security?" Ben asked.
"Well, there's the fence and the wire. Then there's heat sensors on the ground, and some type of sensor on the Sphinx itself. Not to mention the guards and security cameras." I responded. Ben nodded as we came around the back. I tried to get the best look I could, but there was nothing.
"Wait. What's that?" Abigail asked. I looked at the lower left corner of the Sphinx. There was a small black area.
"Is that the entrance?" I asked.
"Covered in sand" Ben said.
"A mouse couldn't even fit through it" I said squinting.
"So tonight we disable the sensors and we dig it out" Ben told ud.
"One problem. Barbed wire. I can disable cameras, sensors, steal passcodes, do pretty much anything with a computer, but I can't disable barbed wire"
"Well that's where good old fashion brute force comes in" Ben said. He started walking back around the front of the Sphinx. I took one last look behind us. I could of sworn I saw a car a few miles back, but I let it slip from my mind.
When we got back to the hotel, I took a nap, and had the same dreams as last night. I need to stop going to sleep. When I woke up I looked to my left. Ben and Abigail's bed was empty. I looked around. There was nobody. Then the door opened.
"Ready to go Riley?"
I'm still debating over who is going to be at the door. So when I do I'll update. Byers.
