Chapter 5
I have decided. Now that I have decided, I know this story is going to be on the shorter side. Maybe 8-10 chapters. I don't know. I'm working on it.
Riley's POV
I immediately sat up and looked at the door. I saw the tall figure of a blonde, british man standing there. I was still covered in sweat as I gazed at him in shock.
"Be ready to leave in five minutes" he told me as he shut the door. I looked out the window. It was still dark outside. Then I look at the clock. 23:13. We had at least 7 hours before the sun came up. I got out of bed and got dressed. I went into the bathroom and washed off my face. I splashed some ice on the bruise and left the bathroom.
I then got on my shoes. I tucked the letter under my foot inside my sock. Then I grabbed my backpack from the floor. I put my fully charged electronics in it and opened the door. Ian and his men were on the other side.
"Hey guys" I said weakly.
"Hello Riley" Ian responded. He was being oddly nice. I gave him a strange look.
"Do you know where Ben and Abigail are?" I asked. Ian walked over to me and put his arm around my shoulder. We walked down toward the end of the hallway and looked out the window.
"Somewhere" he said quietly. Then we turned around and walked back toward everyone else. They pushed me into an open elevator. I was officially trapped.
"Ok Riley listen" Ian began "here is how this is going to work. You are going to do whatever you were going to do with Ben and Abigail at the Sphinx. Or the two of them are going to die"
His voice ran through my ears. I tried to stay calm, but it wasn't really working that well. I looked calm, but on the inside I was exploding with thousands of different emotions. It was hard to process it all.
We all got out of the elevator and walked through the lobby. Since it was nighttime it was empty except for the people at the front desk, and they didn't seemed the large group of old guys moving a very young, good looking one forcefully out of the lobby. So much for that.
We got in a van. Ian and I were in the front, and everyone else was in the back.
"So tell me Riley, how do we get under the Sphinx?" Ian asked, as we turned onto the road.
"Well, when we went to look at it, we saw a small hole in the back. The entrance was buried." I told him. I felt bad giving him that much information, but I knew I had to.
"And how are we going to get into this entrance?" he asked me. I bit my lip, I was not sure I wanted to tell him.
"How do you get in Riley?" Ian asked me again, in a rather calm, nice tone. I narrowed my eyes at him.
"We have to shut down the security system, sneak over the fence and unbury it." I told him, leaving out the part about the barbed wire, hoping they would cut themselves.
"Weren't you going to tell us about the barbed wire?" Ian asked. My face pailed. I was glad it was dark in the car and he couldn't see me.
"No" I said firmly. I could barely see, but I could see his head turn and look at me. He was upset. I could tell.
"Uhhhh. Ian?" I said, waving my hand in front of his face "hello?"
We continued on without a word. I didn't want to provoke him even more. I knew deep down he was trying not to kill me, literally. I tried to keep my breathing silent, it was difficult but I did it.
We arrived at the Sphinx a half hour later, and we continued past it.
"Uh. Not to state the obvious, but we just drove past the Sphinx" I said.
"I know. Shut up" Ian told me. I knew it was smart to shut up, it was whether I chose to shut up or not.
Five miles down the road we stopped. Ian pulled the van over on the side of the road behind a dune. Ian got out of the car. I was going to follow him, but one of his henchmen put his hand on my shoulder. Then Ian opened the back.
"Frank, Tobias you stay here with him" Ian tossed me a headset. I slowly put it on, "Henry, George you'll come with me. The second the security is down let me know, then the three of you get your asses over there. And if he doesn anything he shouldn't, tell Harold to shoot his friends"
Then the van door closed. I knew he meant they'd shoot Ben and Abigail. They weren't lying. They wouldn't hesitate one second. That scared me. I exhaled as my laptop was shoved into my lap. I opened it and started bypassing firewalls.
"You ready Riley?" Ian said five minutes later.
"Almost" I replied, clicking away on my keyboard, "whenever you're ready"
I heard gun shots through the headset. I cringed at the sound of them hitting bodies.
"Riley shut down the electric fence then the sensors. If you don't do them in that order I'll have Ben and Abigail shot"
I gulped then shut down the fence, "fence is down. Give me a few seconds to get the sensors down" I played with my laptop, "done"
"Good. Now get here. Bring your backpack" Ian told me. Now I was in trouble.
When we arrived at the Sphinx there was a large hole in the fence. I was pushed through it and around the back. There Ian and his men were digging out the hole. I marveled. How did nobody know this was here? After it was uncovered we heard police sirens.
"Damn it" Ian said under his breath. Yes! I was saved! Then Ian grabbed my arm and jumped through the hole. Once inside he pressed a button near the door which sealed it off. It was pitch black, but I could still see Ian's outline pointing a gun at me.
"What did you not shut down?" he asked.
"I shut down everything you told me to shut down. Electric fence, then sensors. Exactly what you said" I spat out, god this was nerve racking.
"Were there any other means of security?" he asked. I bit my lip, "was there?" he cocked the gun. I gulped.
"YES! There were a few security cameras" I squeaked out. I heard him groan then take out his phone
"Shoot one of them...I don't care which one just do it!...Fine. Fine it doesn't have to, just do it!" Ian shouted into his phone. He turned it off then took out a flashlight and pointed it directly at my face. I put up my hand to shield myself from the light.
"Take out a flashlight" he told me. I didn't have a flashlight, so I took out my phone. I turned the flashlight on and shined it forward. We were on a stone path. There were no handrails. Ian took out a lighter, and lit the stone rail filled with gunpowder. The gunpowder caught and started moving forward. He did the same on the other side. It kept flowing through the tomb, further and further and further down.
"Oh my god" I breathed.
"You first Riley, you know where to go" Ian said.
"No I don't" I protested.
"Yes you do." he took out a gun.
"I guess I do" I said and continued walking through the tomb. This was not how this was suppose to play out.
