You Belong With Me

Chapter V

Goodbye (10 years old)

Percy

I rang the doorbell. Ding-dong.

No answer.

Ding-dong.

Still no answer

I knocked on the front door and called out, "Hello! Anybody home?"

I rang the doorbell one last time.

Ding-dong.

No answer.

I sighed and was about to turn around until the door creaked open just a little.

"Mr. Chase?" I said.

"Percy?" he croaked. He looked really bad. His hair was like a bird's nest, he had dark eye bags and his face was all red.

"Mr. Chase, I am so sorry." I said and gave him a hug. He hugged me back and I could tell he was holding back tears.

"Percy, you should go to Annabeth. She needs you more than I do."

I nodded and went upstairs to Annabeth's room. I opened the door and I saw Annabeth sitting in the corner of the room.

"Oh, Wise Girl." I went over to her and sat down beside her. I hugged her tightly.

"Annabeth?" I said softly.

She said something in my shirt.

"Do you wanna talk about it?"

She moved from her place and looked at me with her sad gray eyes.

"Okay." she whispered.

"So... When did you find out?" I said as soft as possible.

"Yesterday." She stared at the space in front of her.

"How did it... happen?"

She flinched.

"Sorry. You don't have to tell me." I said.

"No, s'okay. I want to." she whispered. "I-It was a car crash."

I looked at her sadly.

"It was raining hard last night, remember? The road was probably slippery and she... her car hit a tree." She inhaled a deep breath. She was trying not to cry.

"You know, you don't have to be so brave right now. You can cry all you want. I'll always be right here for you. Okay, Wise Girl?"

She nodded and hugged me again. I could feel my shirt getting wet but I didn't care.

"It's okay, Annabeth. Just let it out."

She started sobbing really really hard. Who knows how long she's been holding all her tears in?

When she calmed down a bit, she looked up and gave me a small yet grateful smile. It blew my mind that even if she just cried her eyes out, she still looked pretty.

Wait. What?

"Thanks, Seaweed Brain."

"You're welcome." I replied.

Annabeth

"Hey, Percy?" I mumbled.

"Yeah?" he said.

"I'm hungry."

He smiled. "Okay. Whatcha hungry for? A burger? Pizza?"

"I'm kinda in the mood for some ice cream."

"Ice cream? You got it!" He stood up and grabbed the phone.

"Um, what are you doing?" I asked.

"Calling the delivery." he said.

"But I said I wanted ice cream." I said.

"Yeah and I'm calling the ice cream delivery. What's their number?" he asked.

I stared at him and laughed. I didn't think I would be doing that in a while, considering what, you know, happened. He looked at me stupidly but smiled that I started to cheer up.

"You're such a Seaweed Brain. There is no ice cream delivery, you idiot! And besides, if there was one, the ice cream would melt right before it even got here!" I said and laughed again.

He scratched his neck and said, "Right. I knew that."

I rolled my eyes. "Sure you did." I stood up.

"Where are you going?" Percy asked.

"To get some ice cream. You coming or what?"

He grinned and followed me outside.

"So, which ice cream parlor do you want to go to? There's Benny's. Oh, and there's Dairy King." Percy went on and on naming all the ice cream places he could.

"Um, how about the one at the park?" I suggested.

"That's what I was thinking!" he said.

"Well? Come on then!"

...

"One strawberry and one chocolate please." I said.

"Cup or cone?" The man said.

"Cone. For both." Percy answered for me. We watched the man do his work. Once he was done, we grabbed our ice cream and paid. We walked over to our park bench, the one we usually sat on, and ate our ice cream there.

"So, Annabeth, how are you feeling?"

"I feel okay. But... I just... really miss her." I sighed.

"I miss her too. But don't worry I bet she's in heaven with my dad. So they can be best friends just like us." Percy said.

"Yeah. I guess so." I sniffled a little. "Thanks for making me feel better."

"No problem." he said.

So we just sat there, on our park park bench, eating our favorite ice cream.

And as we did, I thought to myself on how great my best friend was.
