"The Covenant"

Chapter 20: Trust

MOUNT JUSTICE

SEPTEMBER 7, 06:44 EDT

"Ready for school?" M'gann giggled, flying over to Superboy "I made our lunches!"

Treading closely behind Kaldur, Hannah smiled at the girl's cheery demeanor. M'gann really could light up an entire room.

"The first day of the scholastic season caries great cultural resonance." J'onn spoke from beside Hannah "We want to wish you both well."

Superboy seemed disheartened "Guess it's not a Kryptonian thing."

It was M'gann's and Superboy's first day of school! And as such, Kaldur, Hannah, J'onn and Red Tornado have all gathered to wish them good luck on their first day.

"You might wish to…change, before you depart." Kaldur pointed out to M'gann. The girl smiled morphed, changing her usual super-hero clothes in to more human-like ones. But her green skin still stayed the same.

"I spent hours choosing this outfit!" she giggled "What do you think? Can M'gann M'orse pass as an Earth girl now?"

Hannah let out a muffled laugh at Kaldur's face "Well…" he started hesitatingly, and the brunette erupted in to uncontrollable giggles.

"Just kidding!" M'gann grinned and did a small twirl, her skin turning a healthy, peachy flesh tone "Meet Megan Morse!" she turned to Superboy "What's your new name?"

It took a small amount of debate, but Superboy finally decided on a name. Though he didn't really choose it, it was trust on to him by M'gann and J'onn. Conner Kent. The Kent part, as M'gann put it, was in memory of Kent Nelson. Hannah smiled fondly at the notion, finding it cute.

"You should come with us!" the Martian cooed, trying to coerce Hannah in to joining them in their human school adventure.

The girl scoffed "There is no way you'd ever make me go to the hell that is high school." she crossed her arms, turning her head knowingly at Red Tornado "Besides, Red takes care of most of my schooling needs. I was homeschooled by Mr. Kent before."

"I offered a while ago to take the responsibility of schooling Hannah that Kent Nelson had once taken upon himself." Red Tornado elaborated "As I am now the caretaker of the team, this only seemed as a natural course of action."

M'gann pouted, not pleased that she could not make Hannah join her and Conner. But the feeling passed quickly, as she once again turned to the boy "Time to change your shirt! You don't want to reveal your identity." she clacked her tongue, pressing her finger against the S set neatly on the black t-shirt. Conner, bless his soul, was as oblivious as always and just decided to take off his shirt then and there. Hannah wasn't even aware that M'gann's face could turn that shade of red.

The witch girl, too, felt herself blush. The boy of steel had a lovely, muscular torso, even she had to admit that much. As she let out a small cough, she turned her head away, finding it rude to stare. Next to her, she heard Kaldur let out a small chuckle, as if finding her reaction amusing.

"Will this work?" Superboy spoke and Hannah turned back to look at him. He just flipped the t-shirt inside out, effectively hiding the emblem.

M'gann sighed dreamily "Works for me~"

As the two aliens went on their way, J'onn seemed quite emotional behind them "They grow up so fast."

"You have no other engagements for today." Red Tornado spoke in his monotonous voice "Feel free to do as you wish."

Hannah and Kaldur watched as the android took his leave, going in to his private chambers.

The girl stared at the now closed opening on the ceiling "Hm. I wonder what he does up there all day." she let out a sigh and shrugged her shoulders "Anyway, we have the day off. What do you plan on doing today?"

Kaldur seemed to smile "I was hoping that you would give me the opportunity to fulfill my promise."

"Promise?" Hannah tilted her head, her memory void of thoughts that might explain what Kaldur was thinking of.

"I promised to make it up to you for leaving for Poseidonis without you, did I not?"

Hannah turned to face Kaldur fully, her hands clasping together in front of her face hopefully, her eyes glimmering as she tried to fight of the blush trying to make its way on to her face "Y…you want to make it up to me? Really?!"

On her shoulder, Grigor would have smacked his face with his palm. If he had palms instead of wings, that is. Hannah was so subtle, he could barely stand it.

"I made a promise I will, didn't I?" Kaldur assured her "It's the least I can do. Of course, if you don't mind spending time with me today."

The girl could barely contain her excitement "It's a date! It's literally a date! Oh my god, a date with Kaldur, I can't believe it!"

"I literally cannot believe it." Hannah huffed, glaring at the streets of Taipei as if they had personally offended her. "Leave it to Roy to be the biggest cockblock ever." she heard Grigor, even as he tried to comfort her, snicker inside her mind, finding this situation amusing. "Oh, shut up!"

"I thought Speedy didn't want help from the team." she let out under her breath, yet still loud enough for Kaldur to hear her "From what I've heard, we were beneath him."

Before Kaldur could answer though, a new voice interrupted "Its Red Arrow now." the two teens turned around and saw the red-head that Hannah was currently cursing with all her might. "Nice to see you too, kid."

Hannah turned her head away with a huff, her nose turned up high. She and Roy never did get along. Unlike her and Wally, who were mostly picking on each other like silly children, she really had trouble seeing eye-to-eye with Roy. He was brash and short-tempered, often looking down on others. From what she had gathered as she listened to her team mates speak, he refused to join their team, finding it "beneath him" to be called a side kick.

And he interrupted her 'date' (in her head, it was to be a date and nothing would convince her otherwise) with Kaldur before it even had a chance to start.

Therefore, he has ended himself on her black list.

Unfortunately for her, Kaldur considered Roy to be one of his closest friends on the surface world.

As she continued pouting, Kaldur and Roy had already started discussing the purpose of this little get-together "The League of Shadows plans to sabotage the summit and annihilate Luthor. Ra's Al Ghul has sent assassins; I managed to foil them twice already, but…"

"Who are we up against?"

"Cheshire. And as of recently, Sportsmaster." Roy scoffed at the memory "I managed to get this information out of Cheshire while she was in prison, but Sportsmaster busted her out. The two of them together…" he seemed hesitant "…proved too much for me to handle."

Hannah barely fought off a grin as she heard Roy admit it. Though it would seem that perhaps her lips did twitch upwards, because she received a judgmental glance from Kaldur. Quickly recomposing herself, Hannah coughed and cleared her throat, and doing so managed to chase away any hint of a smile she might have had. "So~" she started quickly "How can we help?"

"That is far enough, Cheshire."

Jade could not help but grin as the young Atlantian stopped her in her tracks. Next to him, detaching herself from his arm as Aqualad turned around, was a young blonde, Jade didn't recognize her. Probably someone he used as a fake date to blend in to the surroundings better and…

As Jade pushed the cart forward, Aqualad extended his twin rods, water rising up in to a protective barrier. The girl next to him quickly strode back, as if gliding on air, Jade noted. Also, she seemed to change appearance, but she couldn't take any more of it in. The cart she had laced with explosive detonated, and the barrier Aqualad had put up pushed most of the blast in her direction. She cursed under her breath as her body landed roughly on the floor, skidding for a few meters as glass and debris washed over her. Jade let out a grunt and slowly got to her knees, her head turning in the direction of the two sidekicks.

Well, maybe there were three.

Apart from her cute Red Arrow and that Atlantian friend of his, there was a girl next to them. She watched as the last bit of blonde curls turned to a dark brown, before the girl pulled a hood over her head, hiding most of her locks from view.

"It's over, Cheshire." Red Arrow already had his bow and arrow pointed at her. Oh, how cute! She almost cooed over him. He sure was a catch!

She smirked "You would think so." and right on cue, from behind the broken windows of the top floor, appeared the helicopter with the man she didn't want to call father and various henchmen.

"Take Sportsmaster!" the redhead ordered his comrade "Cheshire is mine!"

"Mm, so territorial, an only our third date~" Jade cooed. Red Arrow was not amused. She grinned.

She watched the Atlantian turn to the hooded girl "Hex." he spoke in a soft, authoritative voice. The girl nodded instantly, his orders clear to her from just that one word. She quickly ran back, away from the fight. Jade watched in half-amazement as the girl flew up in to the air, her arms outstretched as she created a violet force-field between the attackers and the members of the summit. She watched as few of the henchmen actually managed to fight their way through and reach the girl who served as a protector, only to be taken down by a chimera monster before they could even land a blow on the witch.

Jade tsked, annoyed. There was no mention that the team had a magic user. This might put a chink in the plan.

Well, no use crying over spilled milk. She'd think of something yet.

"You called your sidekick friends~" Hannah heard the voice of Cheshire through all the commotion "But didn't you tell me they weren't in your league?"

The brunette let out a huff under her breath and tried to ignore what was happening. Her orders were clear; protect the summit and protect Luthor. Roy and Kaldur were taking care of the heavy lifting, and if anyone managed to get past the two of them and the military forces of the two Rhelasian leaders, they would have to deal with Grigor in his chimera form.

So, there was really nothing for her to worry about. All she had to do was keep the force field strong.

She watched, amazed, how Cheshire moved. She was gorgeous! Her moves were fluid, each one pure poetry in motion. While Hannah was adept at fighting, she had always relied more on her magic. As a result, her skills at the martial arts were nowhere near Cheshire's. So seeing her in action…was breath taking.

"Not bad lad." another conversation reached her ears and Hannah turned her head to look, not even blinking as Grigor jumped right in front of her as he brought down another henchman that got to close. Her gaze locked on Kaldur and Sportsmaster; the later doing the talking "Better than your team did at Santa Prisca." wait, what? "Or Bialya." how did he…

"How did you-?" Kaldur voiced her thoughts, just as frazzled as she was.

She saw Sportsmaster narrow his eyes, pleased with himself "Let's just say, I have an inside source. Very inside."

Hannah felt her eyes widen.

Very inside.

Her mind wandered to hers and Klarions relationship momentarily. The two of them…they never really spoke of her missions, or of the teams' former missions, or anything of such interest. But, that time in Bialya, he did poke around her shattered memories.

Then again, a creature of chaos such as Klarion doesn't really have any interest in working with the likes of Sportsmaster. Or even the League of Shadows, for that matter.

But…he is chaos. Who knows what he might be up to!

Her mind faltered with such thoughts, fear clenching her tightly and a knot forming in her throat. He wouldn't!

Would he?

She couldn't be the…

…Could she?

As the thoughts bubbled at an alarming rate, numbing her, she didn't even hear as Roy called out to Kaldur. She was only awoken from her daze when it was too late to react. Before she knew it, the entire room was covered in thick, black smoke, causing her to gag and cough. She had no chance; the henchman clad in black, his face covered in linen and goggles shielding his eyes, literally tackled her on to the ground, like a drunk rugby player. Grigor must have missed him in all this commotion and smoke.

It didn't take Hannah more than a few seconds to turn the situation around; punching the man strong enough for him to lose focus so she could throw him off of her. But it was already long enough, seeing as this had broken her concentration and with it, brought down the force field as well.

During that moment, another one of the henchmen managed to get through to the men they were so keen on protecting.

Though, thankfully, it seemed Luthor came prepared. "Mercy." he called out calmly, and the lovely young woman who Hannah thought was his assistant stepped up, pointing her arm at the attacker and revealing in the process that it was cybernetic: it opened up, revealing an energy canon, which quickly took down the attacker.

She sat on the floor, Grigor already by her side and nuzzling her face in worry and affection. She was in a daze from everything that happened, her mind still buzzing from the revelations from moments before.

"I…I couldn't be the source. I couldn't be! Klarion has no affiliations with that man!"

"Hex!"

Hannah's head snapped upwards to face whoever was calling her. She was met with the perplexed faces of Kaldur and Roy. She squinted her eyes, her eyebrows arching, as if to show off her confusion at their expression. "What?"

"Are you alright? You have been out of it for a few minutes."

She put a hand to her forehead, trying to clear her thoughts. She felt like it has been barely seconds! "N…no, no, I'm okay. I just got hit on the head a bit too hard, so everything is a bit fuzzy, really." she lied, throwing on a frazzled smile. Kaldur reached out his hand and she accepted it, letting her leader pull her on to her feet.

Roy narrowed his eyes, taking hold of the girls head, examining her. Hannah tensed up as he did "Your pupils don't seem dilated, though your breathing is erratic." he let go of her, turning to Kaldur "You should get her checked out Aqualad, it might be a concussion."

Hannah put her hand on Grigor, still in his chimera form, running her fingers through the soft feathers "I've had a concussion, and trust me, this isn't a concussion."

"Neither the less, after we finish here, we will have to run a medical checkup. Just in case." Kaldur informed her, one hand already on her shoulder "Come. The summit is about to continue."

"It is over." Kaldur concluded as the three of them stood outside of the building. Hannah stretched her arms a bit, ecstatic.

"Thank god for that." she thought gleefully, this mission taking more out of her than she had hoped. Grigor, now back in his usual form and perched on her shoulder, cawed very softly, agreeing with her thoughts.

"Is it?"

Her glee fell at Roy's words "And mister buzzkill strikes again…"

"I heard what Sportsmaster said." Roy continued "Do you really think there is a mole on your team, feeding him intel?"

Hannah felt her shoulders stiffen.

"I can not rule out the possibility. I will investigate." he turned to Hannah, giving her a warning look "Quietly."

She narrowed her eyes "Wait, we're not going to tell the others?"

"No, we aren't." he spoke "I do not want the unit unraveling over baseless suspicion." he turned to Roy "And if there is a mole; I do not wish to tip him, or her, of."

For the first time that evening, Roy smiled "Good luck with that." he gave a small salute, before turning on his heel, ready to leave. Only to be stopped by Kaldur.

"One moment, my friend." the Atlantian spoke, his voice soft "Tonight, you could have called Green Arrow for help. Or the Justice League." Hannah listened to Kaldur's words, her eyes widening at the realization as to what he was implying "Instead, your first instinct was to call the cave."

Roy seemed to sigh "You're right." he turned back to face the two "The team deserves…has my respect." the redhead made his way back, standing in front of Kaldur "I am still getting used to this solo stuff. But if you need me…" he smiled "…I'll be there."

As the two friends shook hands, Hannah couldn't help but smile "I guess you're not as much of a jerk as I took you for, Spee-" she shook her head, stopping herself from calling him that "Red."

He chuckled, putting a hand on her head and ruffling up her hair, much to her distaste "Not as much?" he teased.

Hannah quickly swatted his hand away, pouting "You're still a jerk, Red." she exclaimed, much to Roy's amusement "But you're more bearable than you used to be."

"I'll take that as a compliment, then."

"You were right, it wasn't a concussion." Kaldur mussed, straightening his posture as he did.

The two of them had gone back to the cave, and immediately Kaldur had insisted he gave her a check up to make sure she hadn't suffered any serious damage to the head. So, as the situation evolved, Hannah had found herself seated on a bed in the medical ward as Kaldur checked her vital signs. And Hannah had, she had to admit, enjoyed every second of being showered with the Atlantians' undying attention.

"D'uh! I knew that from the start!" she announced, full of herself "He just took me by surprise, is all!"

Kaldur let out a short laugh as he packed away the medical equipment he had previously been using.

Hannah observed his actions carefully, studiously. Though, inside her mind, she felt the turmoil growing. The mole situation, ever since Roy brought it up again before he left, she had trouble getting it out of her head. She was so afraid of being the mole. There was a possibility. You never know with Klarion. Dealing with chaos means that you never know what you are up against. And in this case, it could mean him entering her mind when she was least aware of it and taking any info he wanted. He was more than capable of it, as proven in Bialya. Her eyes gazed over Kaldur's back as he put the supplies back on the shelves. Could he be doubtful of her, as well?

"Kaldur'ahm…" she started, the boy acknowledging her with a soft hum "…the whole mole situation…do you think it could be one of us?"

"I can't be sure." he muttered "But until I can prove or disapprove the information, I will have to act accordingly." he turned his head to glance at her over his shoulder "I expect you to do the same, Hannah."

"If the intel is true, any one of us could be leaking information." She bit her lips "Chances are, even I could be the mole." she watched as Kaldur's action seized at her words. Hannah could feel a dry laugh growing in her throat "I mean, it is not hard to come to that conclusion, especially if you were to look at how I stand in the eyes of the Justice League." a bitter smile rose to her lips, her head facing the floor "Emotionally unstable, power ridden, with more than one reason to turn sides, not to mention…"

Her tirade was cut short by Kaldur's hands firmly gripping her head, one at each side of her face, and forcing her to look up and at him "That is enough, Hannah." he ordered, his eyes stern. "I have known you for years, and I have seen the feats you are capable of when you are at your best." he spoke, his voice cutting through Hannah's being "And I have seen what you are capable of when you are at your worst. I will be the judge when it comes to how you stand in my eyes; the judgment of the League does not interest me."

Hannah bit her lip and tried to turn her head away, but Kaldur held it in place "Listen to me, Hannah. You, Robin, Wally, Roy…I have known you for so long, as you have all known me. We have been through many trials together. I have no doubt in my mind, and I am certain you are not the mole." his stern face soon melted in to a warming smile "Your flaring temper is only rivaled by your strong sense of loyalty."

Seeing her uncertain face, Kaldur's smile only grew more reassuring. Gently, he readjusted his hold on her face, his fingers grazing over to her scalp and lightly tipping her head forward. He moved in and placed a caring kiss on the top of her head, the girls' breath hitching up in her throat. Kaldur then backed away, his hands dropping down on to her shoulders as he locked eyes with her once again.

"Never doubt that I trust in you."

Hannah, still in shock, managed to smile back at him.

"But what if…" thoughts echoed in the back of her head "…I don't trust myself?"

A/n: Aah, I feel bad for such a horrible turn of events. Poor Hannah, I put her through hell sometimes uou

Klarion has been manipulating her consciously from the start. Hannah has been manipulating him, as well, though. But hers is done unconsciously. v
