Chapter 26: Family Emergency
Rae had suggested that they go to Olivia's place since she didn't have any fresh clothes with her. Plus, she'd never been to Olivia's apartment before and she wanted to see where she lived. Rae packed a bag with some clothes to wear to dinner as well as pajamas, toiletries, and clothes for school, in case she stayed the night. Rae loved Liv's place. It was simple yet elegant, very fitting for her. They showered together, which turned out to be a bad idea. They couldn't keep their hands off of each other. Rae ignored the soreness she had figuring it would go away as her body adjusted. She still didn't tell Liv about her pain, knowing she'd insist they take a breather. She definitely didn't want that. They finally left her apartment and made their way to dinner around eight o'clock, deciding to go to an arcade. They ate pizza and played all the games. Olivia won enough tickets to get Rae a stuffed animal. She picked a giant dog and named it Frances, after her father, because it's eyes reminded her of his. They left and went to pick up Rae's car from the bar where she'd left it the night before and headed back to Olivia's place. When they got upstairs they changed into pajamas and cuddled on the couch to watch tv. Rae's phone kept ringing and she finally gave in and answered.
"Hello." She waited but no one said anything. She looked at the caller id but it was unknown number. "Hello?" After another moment of silence, she hung up the phone and sat back down with Olivia.
"Who was it?" Olivia asked pulling Rae into her lap. "I don't know. Unknown number." She settled back down between Liv's legs and leaned back resting her head on her chest. Olivia kept her eyes on the tv while she played with Araeyah's hair. "What'd they say?"
"Nothing. They didn't say anything so I hung up." Just as Rae finished speaking her phone started to ring again. She picked it up off the table and saw the same unknown number. She rolled her eyes and pushed the answer button. "Hello" she said clearly annoyed. There was only silence on the other end of the phone. "Who is this?" Still no response. "Fine asshole. Don't bother calling back because your number will be blocked" Just as she was about to hang up the phone, she heard a voice on the other end say her name. She sat up and swung her legs around to put her feet on the floor. "Hello? Who is this?"
"Rae, it's Jimmy. I need you to come get me" Rae could tell from his voice that he was high. Jimmy had started doing drugs not long after they moved to the city. His dad was always working and he was really missing his mom. He started hanging out with these loser drop outs that would hang around the school and that was it. It started with drinking and smoking pot. It got progressively worse until he was shooting up and selling for dealers to pay off his debts. Charles finally had stepped up and sent him to rehab this past summer after Jimmy was arrested for possession. Of course, that was after he paid a lot of money to have Jimmy's arrest sealed and his record wiped clean. Before that it was Rae who had taken care of him. She wasn't ready for this to start again. "Rae? Hello?"
She got up from the couch and walked into the kitchen. "Yeah, I'm here." She leaned against the counter with her back to Olivia. "You need to call your dad Jimmy" she whispered into the phone. There was no way she wanted to drag Olivia into this drama. "No, I can't. He'll kill me. I messed up, Rae. I messed up. I'm sorry. Please come get me" Rae took a deep breath, running her hand through her hair. He sounded like a scared little boy. She couldn't just leave him stranded. "Where are you?" She put the address he gave her into her gps and told him she'd be there soon. She hung up the phone and walked past Olivia going straight into her bedroom. She put her jeans and sneakers back on and went back out into the living. Olivia sat up and turned the tv off when she saw that Rae was dressed and gathering her jacket, phone, and keys.
"What's going on? Where are you going?" she asked worriedly.
"I have to go. Ummm...I just have to go take care of something" Rae didn't want to give too many details. She didn't want Olivia involved.
"Well what is it? Who was that on the phone?" Olivia stood up and blocked Rae from heading to the door. "Uh, it's just a family emergency. It's fine. It won't take me long. I'll come back ok?"
"Well, why don't I just go with you?" Olivia wasn't buying Rae's "family emergency" excuse. She knew something else was going on. "No, Liv. I really should just go by myself. I'll be fine. I promise." Rae looked up at Olivia and waited for her to say something. "Ok. But you'll come back?" Rae was surprised that Olivia didn't push her to let her come along. "Yes I will. I promise." She stood up on her tip toes and kissed Olivia on the lips before heading out of the door.
With the light traffic and Rae's speed, it only took her about twenty minutes to reach her brother. She found him sitting on the landing of some old abandoned crack house. He was wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and sandals with no jacket. He was freezing. She quickly got him into the car and blasted the heat to get him warm. "What the hell were you thinking!?" she yelled as she sped away. She was furious. "A crack house, Jimmy?! You called me out here to get you from a crack house?!" She had flashbacks of what happened last time she had picked him up from a place like that. She pushed the images out of her head to focus on the road and on her brother. "Jimmy!" she yelled seeing he was nodding off. "I'm sorry" he mumbled. Araeyah rolled her eyes. They spent the rest of the ride in silence. She pulled up to their house and helped Jimmy upstairs to his room. Thankfully it was late and their parents were already in bed. She helped him into bed, laying him on his side with pillows behind him. She put a trashcan on the floor and water on the night stand and set his alarm clock. "Like he's even gonna hear this in the morning" she thought shaking her head. She turned out the light and left her brother to sleep it off.
It was almost one in the morning when Rae made it back to Olivia's to find that she had waited up for her. She walked tiredly through the door into her embrace. Olivia kissed the top of her head and held her tight. Rae burrowed into her warmth and breathed slowly in and out, calming her rattled nerves. After a minute like this, Olivia pulled away to look at Rae.
"Are you ok?" She wanted to know what had happened but Rae looked exhausted and she didn't want to push her. She just wanted to know if she was alright and get her to bed.
"Yeah. I'm fine", Rae said softly. "Can we just...go to bed?" she asked taking off her jacket and setting her keys down on the table by the door. She was in no mood to explain anything about what'd happened.
"Yeah, of course." Olivia took Rae by the hand and led her to the bedroom. Rae took off her shoes and her jeans and climbed into bed in just her underwear and t-shirt. Olivia shed her sweat pants and climbed into bed next to Rae, scooting in close and spooning her from behind. It didn't take long before they both drifted off to sleep. After a few hours, Olivia woke up to the sound of moaning coming from beside her. She saw that Rae was tossing and turning in her sleep. She sat up and turned on the bedside lamp before moving closer to Rae's side of the bed. "Rae...Araeyah" she said lightly shaking her...her..."We really have to talk about this", Olivia thought realizing she wasn't sure what to refer to Rae as. "Araeyah" she said louder, shaker her with a little more force. Rae shot up in bed gasping for air. It took her a moment to remember where she was but she relaxed as soon as she felt Olivia's hand on her back and her voice whispering in her ear, "It's ok. It was just a nightmare. Everything's ok." Rae gathered herself, taking deep breaths to slow her heart beat.
"I'm sorry" she said softly.
"It's ok. You don't need to apologize." Olivia continued to sooth Rae, rubbing her back and smoothing her hair. "You want to talk about it?" She hoped that Rae would tell her what happened tonight. Rae just shook her head. Talking was the last thing she wanted to do. She turned to Olivia and kissed her hard on the lips. Olivia was hesitant to respond at first, knowing Rae was just using this to get out of talking to her. Then Rae broke the kiss and took off her shirt and bra before straddling Olivia's lap. Rae grasped the bottom of Olivia's shirt and pulled it over her head resuming their kiss once it was discarded. Olivia had been braless underneath her shirt leaving them flesh to flesh. Olivia couldn't think clearly. She loved the feeling of Rae's tongue brushing against her own and the feeling of her skin pressed against hers. She was getting more and more aroused by the second. Then she thought about the fact that Rae had obviously gone through something tonight that she was trying to avoid dealing with. She felt Rae's hand slip into her underwear and start to massage her clit. She moaned into her mouth. As hard it was for her to do, Olivia grabbed Rae's wrist and pulled her hand from her panties.
"What? What is it? What's wrong?" Rae asked confused.
"It's ok if you don't want to talk but we shouldn't do this. Not if you're just trying to avoid whatever happened tonight" Olivia wanted to have sex with Rae but she didn't want to take advantage of her in a vulnerable moment. "I told you. I'm fine" Rae said trying to pick up where she left off. Olivia stopped her, grabbing hold of both of her hands to keep her from touching her. "You're having nightmares. You're not fine." Araeyah moved off of Olivia's lap and sat beside her, pulling the sheet up and covering herself. "If you don't want to have sex with me then just say that. You don't have to make up excuses" She laid down and pulled the sheet up higher over her body and turned her back to Olivia. "Of course I want to" Olivia said moving closer and wrapping her arms around her, "I just...I know something happened tonight." Rae laid still in Olivia's embrace and remained quiet. "I want you to talk to me about it but I understand if you're not ready to share." She planted kisses on the back of her neck before continuing, "but you don't have to use your body as a tool to distract me from having a conversation. That's not how I want us to be." Rae knew Olivia was right. She didn't want to talk so she tried to change the subject by getting her to have sex. She loved that Olivia recognized that and didn't allow her to do that to herself and to their relationship. She turned over and faced Olivia. "I...I'm not ready to talk about it" she said softly. "Ok", Olivia said simply before bringing their lips together. When the kiss ended, Rae snuggled into Olivia and closed her eyes, drifting back into sleep.
Rae woke to the feeling of kisses moving up her shoulder, then up her neck. She turned over on her back and felt lips connect with hers. She slowly opened her eyes to see Olivia kneeling on the bed next to her, already dressed. Her eyes went to the clock on the bedside table. It was just before seven thirty. If Olivia hadn't woken her, her alarm would have just a few minutes later.
"Good morning" Olivia said softly leaning down to kiss Rae again. Rae turned her head at the last second causing Olivia's lips to land on her cheek. She rolled out of bed and walked over to her overnight bag. She retrieved her tooth brush and tooth paste and went into the bathroom. Olivia laughed from her position on the bed, realizing why Rae hadn't allowed her to kiss. She sipped the coffee she'd made for her bedmate and waited. A couple of minutes later, Araeyah came out of the bathroom, void of any clothes except her panties, and crawled onto the bed. She met Olivia at her place on the bed and kissed her firmly on the lips. "Good morning" she said before kissing her lover again. "I made this for you" Olivia said offering Rae the cup in her hands. "Thank you." Rae accepted the cup and took a sip moaning at the feeling of the hot liquid going down her throat. "Ummm...I love coffee." Olivia chuckled and shook her head while climbing off the bed.
"Liv, can I ask you something?" Olivia nodded and sat back down on the bed. "Is it always so good?" she asked. Olivia looked confused, "Is what always so good?"
"Sex...with a woman. I mean you're experienced and I've only ever been with you. I know you said I'm good enough but I just can't imagine that it's as good for you as it for me. I mean, I hardly know what I'm doing." Rae hoped that her next question wouldn't be out of bounds but she couldn't help but ask. "So, I just want to know how good I am, you know, compared to other women you've been with" Olivia looked down and began tracing the pattern of the comforter. "Liv" Rae said causing her to look at her, "What about the last person you had sex with? Was she better than me? And if she was then how much better? What did she do that I don't do? And..." Rae was firing away with questions and Olivia was barely keeping up. She leaned over and kissed Rae to shut her up.
"It's different for everyone. Different women like different things. What pleases one woman may not please another" she explained. "If you're willing to communicate with your partner about what you want, then yes; it can always be this good. And you are more than good enough" she said playing with Rae's hair. "Ok, but how good? Like on a scale of one to ten, how good do I make you feel?" Olivia laughed, "Let's just say that if you hadn't told me that you were a virgin, I would never have known. You make me feel like you know exactly what you're doing." She gave Rae a quick peck on the lips and got up from the bed. "Now come on, I made breakfast" she said over her shoulder as she walked out of the bedroom. "Well I'd give you a ten" she said as she followed, coffee in hand, not even bothering to put on any clothes. Olivia laughed as she walked into the kitchen. Rae sat down at the dining room table as she brought over a plate and two forks. She'd made blueberry pancakes and they looked delicious.
"I remember that not eating breakfast was something we have in common so I thought we could break that bad habit together", she said handing a fork and settling the plate between them.
"I think that's a fine idea." She took the fork and cut out a section of the pancakes and took a bite. She closed her eyes and moaned inwardly. "These are really good" she said with her eyes still closed.
"Why thank you", Olivia said before taking a bite of her own. They ate and exchanged small talk about what they both had to get done that day and made plans to see each other later. When they were finished eating Olivia took the plate and Rae's empty coffee cup into the kitchen and sat them in the sink before returning to where Rae was sitting at the table.
"Olivia what do we call each other?" Rae asked abruptly. Olivia was a little caught off guard by the question and wasn't sure if she knew what Rae meant. "What do you mean?" she asked to gained some clarification. "I mean, what are we to each other? When I talk about you to someone or you talk about me, what do we refer to each other as?" Olivia realized that this was something she'd wanted to discuss too. She sat thinking for a moment, thinking about what label she wanted to apply to their relationship. Rae was getting restless waiting for an answer.
"Are you my girlfriend?" she blurted out. "My partner? Are we lovers or fuck buddies or..." Olivia's eyes snapped up at Rae's last suggestion. "Oh is that all I am to you? A fuck buddy?" she asked slightly offended.
"I don't know. Is that all you want you to be?" Rae asked seductively moving to stand beside Olivia where she sat in her chair. She leaned her right side against Olivia's left and brought her hand up cupping her face. Olivia wrapped her arm around Araeyah's waist and pulled her down to straddle her lap, bringing their mouths together in a hot, sensual kiss. Olivia moaned at the feeling of Rae's nipples hardening when she pressed against her. Rae ended the kiss in desperate need of air. "Is it?" she asked softly. "No."
"Then what are you?" she asked placing soft kisses on Olivia's lips. "I'm your girlfriend." Olivia's tone was firm and full of confidence as the words left her mouth. They sounded really good to her. "Good" Rae said, her lips still on Olivia's.
She gave a few more kisses before trying to get up from Olivia's lap. She was surprised when she felt Olivia tighten her arms around her waist stopping her from moving. "Was that just...I mean did I just..." Olivia understood what Rae was trying to ask. "Yeah, you did" she answered before Rae completely asked the question. "Oh. Ok. Wow" she said still a bit out of breath. Rae rested her head on Olivia's shoulder as she tried to gather the energy to move. "Are you ok?" Olivia asked running her hand through Rae's hair. "Um hum" was all she got back. "Ok well I have to leave for work and you have to get ready for school so...you better start moving or we'll both be late." Rae lifted her head from Liv's shoulder and lowered herself to the floor onto wobbly legs. She stood still for a moment to find her footing. "Yeah ok. Thanks for that. I guess it's lucky for me that you're such a show off" she said gaining a laugh from Liv. "Have a good day at work. I'll see you later." She gave Liv a quick kiss before picking up her underwear and heading toward the bedroom. Olivia laughed and shook her head as she watched her girlfriend retreat into the bedroom. She followed her, needing to get her badge and gun from the night stand. She heard the shower start as she clipped them to her belt. She walked toward the bathroom door and turned the knob to open it.
"Go to work Olivia" she heard Rae say from inside the bathroom. Rae heard the knob rattle and figured Olivia was trying to sneak into the bathroom with her. She knew if she let her come in, they would both definitely be late. Olivia groaned in disappointment and let go of the knob. She turned and walked out of the bedroom, continuing out the door of her apartment to head to work.
