Chapter 56: It's Over

Olivia cried her entire drive home. She cried in the shower and then got right into bed. She was so upset she couldn't eat anything. Then she cried herself to sleep. When she woke up the next morning her eyes were red and her head was pounding. It was lucky for her that she had the day off because their was no way she would've made it in to work. She sat up in bed, taking deep breaths to work through the pain coursing through her head. She went into the bathroom and took her Tylenol from the cabinet, popping four of the tablets in her mouth and cupping her hands together under the faucet for water to wash them down. She splashed water in her face and rubbed her eyes which were itching from dryness. After drying her face, she stared at herself in the mirror and thought about what she'd done the night before. "Alex was right" she thought to herself. "How could you be so stupid?" she said, talking to her reflection. She knew she had to do something to fix this. She went into her bedroom and picked up her jeans from the floor to pull out her phone. She hesitated for only a second before dialing Rae's number.

Rae woke to the sound of her phone rattling on the bedside table. She'd gone to bed right after she kicked Olivia out of her apartment. She did her usual thing; deep breathing, no tears. Just got in bed and went to sleep. She reached over and grabbed her phone, not bothering to look at the caller id. She rolled over on her back and put the phone to her ear after hitting the accept button.

"Hello". Her voice was heavy with sleep so Olivia knew she had woken her up.

"Rae" she said softly in the phone. Rae sat up on her elbows and took the phone from her ear. She looked at the caller id checking to see if the person calling was who she thought it was. Olivia's name on her screen confirmed that it was exactly who she thought. She didn't know why she thought she could be mistaken. She'd know that voice anywhere. "Hello? Rae?" Olivia repeated when she didn't hear a response. Rae said nothing, she just hung up the phone, returned it to the night stand and laid back down. It started to ring again and she grabbed it, this time checking the name. It was Olivia again. She hit the ignore button and turned the phone on silent before setting it back down and going back to sleep.

Two hours later she heard banging on her door. She checked her phone for the time, one thirty in the afternoon. Olivia had called her six more times and left three voicemails. She deleted them without bothering to listen. She got out of bed and grabbed the robe that she'd bought on their trip to the cabin, throwing it on and tying it as she walk to the door.

"Alright, I'm coming" she yelled as the banging continued. If it was Olivia she was going to lose it. She opened the door to find Ashley and Maureen standing in the hallway. They walked in past her even though she hadn't exactly invited them in. She shut the door and followed them to the living room. Ashley handed her a coffee before sitting down on the couch with Maureen.

"I called you twice on our way over here" Maureen said sipping her own coffee.

"Sorry. My phone was on silent". She took a healthy gulp of her coffee and relaxed into the comfort of her loveseat. "So, I'm guessing that means you forgot?" Ashley asked. Rae's look of confusion confirmed it for them. "We're supposed to hang out today, remember? Lunch, movies, whatever else we can get into. I can't believe you forgot" she said. "Sorry" she said again, "It's...been a long week. Just give me like twenty minutes. I'll go get ready". She got up from the couch and disappeared into her room. Sure enough, just shy of twenty minutes later she emerged again in black jeans, a white sweater and black vest with her black ugg boots. She'd thrown her hair up into a bun and put her glasses on. Her phone started to ring in her back pocket and she took it out and looked at the screen. It was Olivia...again. "Wow, she sure does know how to break up with a girl" she thought to herself. She hit ignore and returned the phone to her pocket. "I'm ready". The girls grabbed their coffees and headed out the door.

They decided to go to the movies first then to eat. Rae excused herself to the bathroom and Ashley and Maureen talked about her while she was gone. They could tell there was something different about her. She seemed sad one moment then not so sad the next. They couldn't quite put their fingers on it but something was definitely going on with her. She came back and sat down at the table just as their food was coming out. She looked in a daze, like her mind was somewhere else. Her phone started to buzz on the table and both Ashley and Maureen glanced at the screen and saw Olivia's name. They both took a relieved breath thinking that once she talked to the brunette she'd relax and be in a better mood. Instead of answering the phone, she hit ignore and dropped her phone in the bag hanging on the back of her chair.

"Ok, what's going on?" Maureen asked. It wasn't like Rae to be so pouty and moody and it definitely wasn't like her to ignore Olivia's phone calls.

"What do you mean?" Rae asked not knowing what Maureen was talking about. "I mean you're like...really sad today. You've been in a bad mood since we left your apartment and now you're ignoring Liv's calls. What's going on? Did you two get into a fight or something?" Rae didn't say anything. She sat quietly picking at the food on her plate. "Araeyah, come on" Ashley said jumping in, "What gives?".

"Olivia and I broke up" she said abruptly. Maureen choked on the water she'd just taken a sip of. Ashley pat her back to help her get her breath and gave her a napkin to clean up the spill. "Wha..Why? When? Why...What?" she asked in shock. "You broke up?" Ashley asked in disbelief. Rae just nodded her head and took small bites of the food on her plate. "But how? I mean when? I mean why?"

"This past weekend at the cabin, you two seemed so...so..." Maureen trailed off trying to think of the right words to use. "In love" Ashley said finishing her sentence for her. Maureen nodded her head, "Yeah" she said in agreement. "How can you go from that to "we broke up" in a week?"

"You're not just gonna break up with her. You're gonna try to work it out, right?" Ashley asked. Even though she still had feelings for Rae, she knew deep down that Rae and Olivia belonged together. She just wanted to see her friend happy. "I didn't break up with up. She broke up with me...last night. She ignored me all week and then I got home last night and she was sitting on my couch". Her voice was low and sad as she started to explain what'd happened between her and Olivia the night before. "First she said she wanted to take a break because we're getting too busy for each other. Then she tried to say that it was because of work and how people were treating her differently since her suspension but I knew she was lying. Finally, she admitted that she didn't just want to take a break and that she was breaking up with me because it'd be easier for both of us to just date people our own age". Ashley and Maureen listened in disbelief. "So that's it. We're done".

"Just like that? You're not gonna try to change her mind?" Maureen asked. Rae shook her head, "No. We're done" she said again.

"Rae...this is crazy" Ashley said, "I mean, she's calling you. Maybe she realizes that she made a big mistake and she wants to take it back. Maybe she wants to work things out".

"Yeah, Rae. I mean, after everything you went through to be together you can't let it end like this. Maybe you should answer the phone. Talk to her. I'm sure you two can work this out" Maureen said. She hoped they could persuade Rae to at least pick up the phone and talk to Olivia.

"She kissed Alex". She said it as if that was the deal breaker, as if that one event was what cemented her decision to not try to get her relationship with Olivia back on track. "She said that she thought that being with Alex would be easier than being with me. She kissed her. For the first half of our relationship she was so paranoid about my friendship with you" she said referring to Ashley, "and that I'd cheat on her with you and she ends up being the one wanting to be with someone else. I trusted her. From day one I trusted her and now...I just don't" she said shrugging her shoulders. "Plus she's lying to me. I know this isn't about what would be easier for us. That's just an excuse she came up with. Look, I appreciate that you guys care and that you want to see me happy but there's no point in talking about this anymore. When we got together the last time, I told her it was her last chance. She promised me that she wouldn't run away anymore and that she would be honest with me about everything. She's been planning to break up with me for at least a week. I don't know how long she's been lying to me, pretending that she wanted to be with me and I don't care. I don't trust her anymore. She said she would never do anything to hurt me. Now, she's hurt me more than ever. So, that's it. We're done". There was no hesitation in her voice. Maureen and Ashley knew she was absolutely serious about it being over between her and Liv. They couldn't believe it but when Rae made up her mind about something, that was it. They finished their lunch and left the restaurant. They decided to go out later that night so Ashley dropped Rae off at home so she could change and she and Maureen went back to her house to get ready. They talked about what they could do to get Rae and Olivia back together but came up with nothing. Their plan hit a dead end every time because every plan hinged on Rae being receptive to getting back together with Liv. They decided to let it go for now but would definitely be revisiting the issue later.

Rae was in her closet trying to decide on what to wear out tonight. She wanted to wear a dress but it was cold out and she didn't want to freeze. She went over to her drawer and pulled out sheer black stockings she'd found at a thrift store and pulled them on. Then she put on a yellow dress that fit her snug in all the right places. She finished the outfit with black and yellow pumps, black hoop earrings and a little gloss on her lips. She put in her contacts but decided not to put on any other makeup. She let her hair down which had curled slightly from being up in a bun all day. She took one last look in the mirror and decided she was satisfied with her appearance. As if on cue, there was a knock at her door. She grabbed her phone, wallet, keys and id, put them in her black clutch and headed for the door. When she opened it, it wasn't who she was expecting.

"What are you doing here?" she said annoyed. She got no response back, just staring. She let out a harsh breath and rolled her eyes, "Olivia" Rae said getting her to meet her eyes. "What are you doing here?" she asked again now that she had the brunette's attention. Rae could tell from her eyes, that were dry and red, that she'd been crying. She felt bad for a moment but then remembered that Olivia was one who'd broken up with her. She had nothing to feel bad about.

"I...I" Olivia was trying to put her thoughts together but she couldn't seem to do it fast enough. Rae looked beautiful. She was dressed like she was going out and ready to have a good time. It was like the break up hadn't even touched her. "I was hoping that we could talk" she said finally putting a sentence together. "I've been calling you all day".

"Yeah and I haven't answered. You're a detective. I'm guessing you can figure out what that means" she said harshly. It was like they were back to square one. She thought back to how she'd talked to Olivia on Halloween night when she saw her after a week of being ignored. She remembered how snide she'd been. Then she remembered how far they'd come from that night, how much they'd experienced together, how much fun they'd had, how in love they were. Now here they were, back to that starting place again. "I know that you don't want to talk to me but please I just...I'm sorry..."

"Yeah, you said that a lot yesterday" she said dismissively. "I know I screwed up. I was stupid. I don't want us to be over" she said desperately. "It's barely been twenty four hours and I'm already a mess without you. Please Rae, if you could just..."

"Olivia stop". She felt her phone vibrating in her purse and knew it was either Ashley or Maureen calling to tell her they were outside. "It's over" she said. Olivia opened her mouth to say something else but Rae stopped her. "No, Liv. Whatever you're gonna ask, it's a no. You're right. You screwed up. There's no going back now. It's over" she said again. She stepped out of her apartment and closed and locked the door behind her. "Stop calling, ok?". She didn't wait for Olivia to respond. She just turned and headed for the stairs. "Araeyah" Olivia called out after her. She stopped just as she reached the stairs and turned to look at her, "I won't stop trying" she said repeating what Rae had said to her months ago. Rae just turned and walked down the stairs and out of the building to the car.

A black town car was waiting out front of her building. A man in a black suit walked around and opened the door for her to get in the back seat. She heard the door to her apartment building open and shut and she turned around to see Olivia standing there looking at her. They held each other's gaze for a moment, then Rae turned and got into the car. Ashley handed her a glass of champagne and she drank it down in one gulp before holding it out to her for a refill. She hesitantly filled her glass again before returning the bottle to the ice bucket. Rae finished her second glass just a quickly as the first then set her glass in the holder on the door. She leaned over and grabbed the entire and took a huge gulp. Ashley and Maureen saw Olivia's mustang pull out of the parking lot and immediately figured out why Rae was going to town on the champagne. Just as she was about to take another gulp, Maureen grabbed the bottle from her and picked up her glass from the cup holder.

"Why don't you slow down with that" she said, not really asking. She poured a little into her glass and held on to the bottle. She put it on the side furthest from Rae so she couldn't reach it. "Why'd you get a car?" she asked looking at Ashley as she took another sip from her champagne glass. "I didn't want to drive and neither did Maureen and I figured by the end of the night none of us would be in any shape to drive anyway. So I got us a town car. He's ready to take us wherever you want to go. It's your night. Name the place and we're there". Rae looked out the window. "I don't care where we go as long as there's dancing" she said. Ashley nodded and opened the divider between the front cab and the back seat, giving the driver the name of the club they were going to.

They pulled up twenty minutes later and the driver came around to open the door for them. They showed their fake ids at the door and were let right in. Rae went straight to the bar and opened a tab for the night. She ordered three shots right away and gave one to Ashley and the other to Maureen. They tossed them back and then hit the dance floor. They danced for at least an hour before going back to the bar for more drinks. Rae ordered three rounds in a row and tossed them back. Ashley didn't know if she'd be able to keep up with her and Maureen knew that she definitely couldn't. She took her last shot and told Rae not to get anymore for her. Rae spotted a tall brunette guy watching her from the end of the bar. After a few minutes of staring, he finally walked over to talk to her.

"Hey" he said holding out his hand. "I'm Kyle". He had blue eyes and a beautiful smile. She took his hand in her own. "Araeyah" she said smiling back.

"Araeyah? That's different" he said. She smiled and nodded her head, "Yeah, I guess".

"You from here? New York, I mean" he said clarifying his question. She shook her head, "No. California, originally, then Texas. I moved here with my parents and my brother three years ago" she said. "So that's were you get such a beautiful tan from huh? Those nice, warm, coastal states?" he asked jokingly. She laughed, "No, this is...all natural" she said. He'd leaned in closer so he could hear her over the loud music and he smelled amazing. It was distinctly different from Olivia's scent but still really amazing. "So, you here alone tonight?" She shook her head again, "With friends". He looked behind him in the direction she was pointing. "The blonde is Maureen and the brunette is Ashley. We're celebrating" she said.

"Really? Celebrating what? Birthday, new job, new place?" he asked giving a few guesses. "No. I'm newly single" she said in his ear. He leaned back and locked eyes with her before bringing his mouth back to her ear, "Lucky me". He ordered them another drink and they talked for a little while longer. He stood up from his bar stool and offered his hand, "You wanna dance?". She nodded and took his hand. She handed her clutch to Ashley as he led them to a small free space on the crowded dance floor. Their bodies melded together almost as perfectly as hers did with Olivia's but not quite perfectly. "Close enough" she thought to herself. She danced with Kyle for the rest of their stay at the club. Ashley finally came over to get her, saying that they wanted to go somewhere else. She exchanged numbers with him, paid their tab, and then left the club.

They went to another club where they had more drinks and did more dancing. Rae met a girl named Haley. She was a short blonde girl with a nice athletic build. They danced together for most of time they spent at the club. They stumbled out of the club and back into the town car two hours later and found a pizza parlor that was still open to get something to eat. Rae tried to order beer but Maureen slyly gestured to the waiter to bring water. They ate and made sure Rae drank all of her water before leaving and going back to the town car to take them home. Maureen and Ashley practically had to carry Rae into her building and up the stairs to her apartment. They helped her out of her dress and tights and into pajamas before helping her into bed. Ashley grabbed the Tylenol and the trash can while Maureen went to the kitchen for a glass of water. They help her to swallow down the tablets and laid her down on her side with the trash can next to the bed. Fifteen minutes later, Rae was sound asleep.

"You go. I'll stay with her, make sure she's ok" Maureen whispered.

"Are you sure?" She nodded her head. "Ok. I'll come back in the morning. We can go out for breakf...lunch" she said correcting herself. "It'll definitely have to be lunch". They both laughed looking at their passed out friend. Maureen walked Ashley to the door, "Send me text when you make it in" she said giving her friend a hug goodbye. "Sure thing". She left the apartment and made her way back down to the car. Maureen shut and locked the door and went back to the bedroom. She found some clothes to wear in Rae's drawer and climbed in bed next to her. She stayed awake until she got the text from Ashley that she'd made it home safely. It didn't take long before she joined her friend in a deep sleep.
