Serena looked at herself once more in the mirror as she did up her rocket scrub cap, she couldn't help but feel the nerves in her stomach as she couldn't quite believe that this was happening, that she was here. But after the long conversation that she had with Kelly about this, Serena knew that she was doing the right thing by being here. Taking a deep breath Serena walked out of the women's changing room and headed down a hallway of the surgical wing to head towards the OR. But before she did that, there was something else she had to do or rather someone she had to see and that person was just by the doors or rather laying in a gurney by the doors marked medical staff only talking to his best friend. Saying their goodbyes before he was wheeled off to an experimental surgery that would save his career and his life. Serena felt more butterflies in her stomach as she walked over to Kelly and Shay, neither of them knew that she was going to be here but Serena was. Her and Kelly had their up and down but months ago she had promised him that she would always be there and Serena kept her promises. There was no way that she wasn't going to be here for Kelly on today of all days, there was no where else that she would be on this day than right by his side as Serena wasn't going to let him do this alone.

"Serena…" Shay began as she looked up and noticed Serena as she made her way over to them. The surprise was as clear as day on both Shay and Kelly's faces as Serena had led them to believe that she would be working today and as such she wouldn't be able to make it for the start of Kelly's surgery. But that was a lie, Serena just wanted to return the surprise after Kelly hadn't got on the plane to Madrid and came surprised her with news that he as staying here in Chicago and wanted to be with her. This time for good.

"What are you doing here Rocket? I thought you were at work…" Kelly asked and Serena let out a small smile as she reached the gurney and entwined her hand in one of Kelly's and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

"If you thought that you were going to do this without me then you were sorely mistaken Kelly. I had made some calls and it turns out that your surgeon knows my chief of surgery and I had him call in a favor in return of me doing some extra work for him. I promised you that I would be here every step of the way and now I will be. I won't be performing the surgery but I will be there with you in the OR making sure everything goes smoothly and along with Shay, right by your side when you wake up in recovery…" Serena said in a reassuring manner as after Kelly had surprised her at Lakeshore the two of them had gone to her apartment to talk. Clearly they had both wanted to do more than that but it was important that the two of them talk as there was a lot to talk about. One of them was this experimental surgery Kelly was about to have which would fix his broken neck and have him back to work in half the time.

Kelly had thought that Serena would be against it regardless of how it explained, he assumed that she would be worried about the risks, But Serena surprised him, that night when they had sat up all night on her couch she had told him that she understood why he wanted this surgery. Serena explained to Kelly that she knew his job was her livelihood just like he knew how much her job meant to her. God forbid if something happened to Serena's arm or hand, her career would be over. Sure she would still be able to practice medicine in some capacity but never would she be able to operate again. Serena told Kelly if that had ever happened and there was some experimental surgery that would fix her problem and allow her to continue to work then she would take the risk and have the surgery. Serena had told Kelly she would support him fully on this.

"I see your wearing my favourite scrub hat of yours…" Kelly couldn't help but point out as he glanced up at the rocket scrub hat that was covering Serena's hair.

"Well I couldn't very well be here with out it, I thought that it was only fitting that I wear my rocket scrub cap today, if not only for you but I do have a reputation to keep up as Rocket McArthur. Not only do I respond well to traumas that have garnered me a nickname and quite the reputation but I also have scrub caps to match. Plus it tends to make people laugh to see me wearing them, they get a couple of chuckles out it."

"You didn't have to do this Serena." Kelly said and Serena looked down into the blue eyes she adored so much. A part of Serena still couldn't believe that Kelly had decided to leave Renee and stay here in Chicago. Serena could remember just talking to Emma about how broken hearted she was about Kelly leaving when she heard his voice. Serena's heart had stopped in that precise moment and she couldn't believe Kelly was there, standing in front of her with that cocky smile and saying that he couldn't leave her.

"Yes I did, I hear it's what women do for their boyfriends." Serena quipped which caused Kelly to smile, hopefully it was easing some of his nerves as this was a big day. Hopefully things would go to plan but deep down they both know that something could go wrong. But they were both thinking positively.

"Boyfriend, huh?" Kelly questioned in amusement.

"You called me your girlfriend last night so I'm just returning the favor Kelly, there is no place I'd rather be or want to be here, so stop getting all sappy on me and just accept the fact that I'm not going anywhere. I'm right here, where I'm supposed to be." Serena replied in a matter of fact tone of voice.

"I have a confession to make…" Kelly began and Serena glanced at Shay as this sounded bad.

"Kelly you don't have to do this, nothing is going to happen so you can put your 'if anything happens to me' speech away as we're not hearing it." Shay firmly stated and Serena nodded in agreement as she had not asked for this massive favor from her boss for to hear some emotional speech from Kelly. Whatever he wanted to say could wait until after his surgery.

"No it's not that, it's just that I have something that I forgot to mention to Serena a few days ago when we were arguing about Madrid and what happened between us three years ago. It's about what I did after she had left for Boston." Kelly vaguely said to Shay and Serena couldn't help but pick up something in Shay's reaction to this information. Whatever had gone on after she had left for Boston was something that was apparently important.

"Kelly…" Serena began.

"Rocket. I need to say this before I go, you need to hear this." Kelly said stressing the fact that Serena needed to hear this before he went into surgery. Serena wasn't sure whether she needed to be worried about what exactly Kelly wanted to tell her.

"Okay Kelly, I cave… So what is so important that you can't wait until after your surgery to tell me, huh? Whatever it is I'm guaranteed that it can wait for a few hours but go ahead and tell me." Serena prompted.

"I came after you. When Andy told me that you were leaving Chicago for Boston and we had found out that you were already gone I came after you Serena. I was in love with you and I didn't want to lose you so I came after you, I came to Boston. But I saw you at your new hospital and you were so happy that I didn't do anything as I thought you'd be mad if you saw me so I went back Chicago. I figured you'd be happy without me…" Kelly announced and Serena was rendered speechless as she hadn't been expecting to hear this. All this time she had wanted Kelly to come after her all those years ago to convince her to come back with him and when he didn't she had thought that it was because he didn't feel the same way about her. But what Kelly was telling her now seemed to contradict this in every way possible.

"You're telling me this now? There were numerous times you could have told me this since I came home and you choose now to tell me? Serena eventfully replied after a few moments silence as it was a lot of information for her to take in.

"I know." Kelly replied with a small smile.

"Unbelievable, you do realize that the two of us are idiots? No wonder we couldn't get it right until now." Serena wearily said as she had left Chicago three years ago so Kelly could be happy and then he had followed her to Boston because he loved her. But then left so she could be happy without him. It was kind of a romantic in a way and it showed how much the two of them cared for each other but Serena couldn't help but note the stupidity of it all. If the two of them had gotten their acts together years ago, none of this would have happened and they would have still been together with less complications and drams in their lives. But the only thing that mattered was that they were together now.

"The firefighter and the doctor, it could only happen to the two of you…" Shay noted in amusement but before Kelly or Serena could reply, several nurses and Kelly's surgeon had arrived. Which meant it was time to go.

"You ready to do this?" Serena asked.

"You know me Rocket, always ready for anything…" Kelly quipped but the smile he gave her wasn't the biggest no doubt because he was slightly scared so she gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. Kelly was scared and Serena was less scared although she was incredibly nervous but she had to put on a confident front for Kelly. She need to reassure him and make him feel like this was routine surgery that was going in for despite the both knowing that this surgery was experimental.

"We'll get through this together."
