Chapter V: Into the Void

The lights of the many arcade games danced and flickered in the arcade as night rolled in. The store was closed up, and quiet as could be. The only sounds that echoed in the dark building were the beeps and songs of the different worlds living behind their thick glass screens.

Ralph may have been one of the bravest characters, good or bad, the arcade had ever seen, but he was no fool. Going alone on his search would be treacherous, and having become so used to a small girl keeping him company being alone scared a lost part of him.

The overall-wearing bad guy tried his best to find a companion or two. He spent hours asking around the arcade. He started at Tappers then tried the station. Ralph even asked the villains of BAD-ANON, but everyone kindly denied his pleas. Even the thought of the commandos or the unknown terrified the arcade.

The fact was looming over his head; Ralph was going alone.

-flashback-

Opening the grand entry doors sparkling with cane sugar, Ralph stepped into the throne room. Felix and Calhoun were not present, but Peppy and guards from multiple games still populated the foyer. The rabbit navigator's ears perked up at the sight of Ralph,

"'Bout time you got back. I knew you wouldn't leave without it," The hare grinned lightly pulling out the tracking device.

The giant man rose an eyebrow, "You're letting me take it?" He was shocked, since he knew the navigator cared greatly for his technology.

Peppy chuckled, handing Ralph the small machine, "You bet. You can take it as long as you bring Vanellope back! The GPS is yours, Ralph."

Grasping it in his massive hands, Ralph grinned the first smile that had visited his face in a long while. He nodded before placing the GPS carefully in his pocket. A flicker of white caught his eye. His brown eyes looked up.

There, gracefully stepping towards him, was the familiar haze of white,

"I see you are embarking on your quest." Chancellor Cane held her head high as she spoke in a soft yet deep tone.

Ralph cleared his throat before beginning to bow, but he kept his eyes on the divine woman in front of him.

"Y-yes," He managed. He wasn't sure where the stutter came from, for he did not fear the celestial being. There was an air, however, that filled the room from her presence that seemed to make his skin colder.

The chancellor's eyebrows rose slightly before she spoke again,

"I find it noble, this quest of yours. However, I must inform you of your true enemy on this journey," she looked down on him with piercing, but wise eyes. "Time."

His shoulders stiffened immediately and his face twisted into one of confusion and slight fear,

"What—"

"In forty-eight hours, this world will fall into a deep slumber. The denizens of this realm shall remain awake, but their bodies will be fully depleted of any sort of magic or power. To the outer world, we shall appear to be in a dark and frozen state."

The chancellor continued with a single huff,

"Then, when the world is awakened once more, their powers shall be restored. But then—"

Ralph inhaled sharply as Cane crossed her arms with a soft scowl.

"—the real race begins."

The two characters, white and red, gazed into each other's eyes.

"You will have a final twelve hours to return her majesty to this dominion"

"'a final twelve hours'—w-what is that? Some sort of joke?! Peppy, Peppy what does she—" Ralph couldn't even finish his sentence; his anger began to boil over.

Peppy trembled slightly due to his rabbit genes, "I-It must be the final part of the update. It's the portion that makes the new settings fixed."

Silence hovered menacingly in the room. The guards had gone quiet, and Cane uncrossed her arms effortlessly.

Ralph clenched his fists and, at a painfully slow speed, turned his attention to the goddess.

"What—will—happen—to—her." Ralph gritted his teeth, but he looked up at the woman with eyes filled with true emotion.

Chancellor Cane gazed into Ralph's big brown eyes, her amber ones glittering in the white hues of the room. No emotion touched those golden irises.

But Ralph didn't want to hear it, whatever 'it' was. He turned forcefully from her gaze and stepped quickly towards the great doors.

He wouldn't let anything happen to her. Nothing.

As the giant pulled the handle and proceeded to make his exit, Chancellor Cane calmly turned towards the throne before exhaling quietly,

"Good luck, Wreck-it Ralph."

-end flashback-

With his large pockets packed with supplies and provisions, Ralph sighed as he stood in front of his game's terminal in Grand Central Station. He pulled out the GPS Peppy gave him and pressed its main search button carefully.

'There she is,' he thought as the bright yellow light began to flicker to its own beat. It showed that he needed to take a right, enter the terminal for Hero's Duty, and then take a right from within the terminal…which didn't make any sense. There had never been another terminal. Nevertheless, Ralph proceeded to follow the GPS's directions and made his way over to Hero's Duty.

Flashbacks were flooding his head causing a small smile to appear on his lips as he thought of the time where he tried to fly that blasted spaceship with the cybug.

When he entered the terminal, the invisible security wall flashed red and beeped, and the infamous GCS guard appeared,

"Name?"

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"

"Name?" The guard repeated pushing up his glasses.

After being pestered by the pixelated cop, Ralph carried on into the tunnel. He arrived at the station, the hovering train awaiting any on-goers directly in front of him. The bad guy glanced from side to side, and as his head pulled back from looking to the right he did a double take. There, cut into the metal wall was a door. A small door hardly noticeable far too little in size for Ralph to fit through, but maybe if he squeezed…?

And that's just what Ralph did. With his head in first followed by a shoulder and then another—he managed to push and jam his way through that insufferable door. He fell out onto the other side before standing up, but as he dusted himself off he realized he could have just busted down the door. He rolled his eyes as his brain humored him and his gaming voice fluttered in his head "I could've wrecked-it!". He waved away the thought with an annoyed sigh, brushing the flecks of metal off his sleeves. The door slammed shut. Ralph jumped a bit with a grunt and then exhaled cooly.

Then he began to take in his actual surroundings. Standing in a shadowy, airy space, he could barely see a thing. If it weren't for a small blue light above the door, Ralph would be standing in utter darkness.

He reached into his pocket for the GPS and took a step forward, but as he did so a deep hum echoed in the room and something rumbled to life.

Ralph's eyes widened as he went stiff as a board, unsure of what to do or where to move.

Lights flashed and flickered, and within seconds the room was dimly lit by a thousand electric blue circuits running all around the places, fading and flashing all in rhythm. Ralph then realized that he wasn't standing in a room, but in another terminal. And there, hovering gracefully in between two boarding platforms was a jet black shuttle, much fancier than the ones used in the station. A single blue stripe that flickered like the other circuits ran along its side and around the seats inside it, which faced the front not the sides.

Ralph walked towards the platforms and stopped in front of the hovering shuttle. He watched the lights race around the black metal as the engine hummed like a motorcycle and smirked,

"Cool."

He pulled out the GPS and looked at the flashing light. It was flickering towards the end of the tunnel, towards the unknown.

Ralph wasn't going to lie—he was scared. His hand even shook a bit as he put the device back into his pocket, following with a gulp. If these commandos were all that Falco and the others said they would be, Ralph didn't stand a chance. But he was Vanellope's only hope. Heck, he was Sugar Rush's only hope of recovering their rightful ruler. This made Ralph think of Cane.

His brow furrowed and his chest rose. Ralph sucked in a breath and stood tall.

Grasping the edge of the station cart, he carefully stepped into one of the seats causing the shuttle to rock, but then he was seated and breathing normally again. The engine revved to life and Ralph was sitting forward, facing down the dark tunnel that was occasionally washed in a dim blue light from the hundreds of circuits.

Suddenly, a bar pixelated in front of him and was immediately attached to either side of the cart for each row of seats, five in total. Ralph instinctively placed his enormous hands on the bar and examined it with a questioning face and a raised brow,

"What the—"

His words were cut off as the shuttle darted from the boarding platforms without warning and shot down the tunnel at an incredible speed.

The sound of Ralph's screams and hollers echoed through the metal channel that turned and looped and dove under and up again. He gripped the bar fiercely, surprised his strength hadn't broken it yet, and his face contorted humorously as he soon began riding up and around the circular passage. And when he was upside down he had to close his pockets to make sure nothing fell out, though a banana was lost.

Just as Ralph thought he couldn't take it anymore, and his face began to turn as green as Luigi's overalls, the cart stopped abruptly thrusting him into the bar, which silenced his screams. He gripped his stomach, his face changing every second from sick to sicker to scared to even sicker. The bars disappeared into a fluttering pack of pixels and a small bell sounded signaling the end of the ride.

Ralph gripped the edge of the shuttle and stepped off and on to the new platform before curling over to hold his stomach, a hand racing towards his mouth to cover it. Luckily, the queasiness faded and Ralph shook it off,

"Man, I'd rather eat chocolate than go on that again."

But as the words left his mouth, he caught sight of another light, similar to the one above the door he squeezed through. And under this light, was another door. Luckily, this metal entrance was larger for him to fit through.

He didn't even check his GPS to see if this was the way to Vanellope. There was no other way out and he was not getting back on that shuttle.

Ralph stopped in front of the door. There was no handle, but a small diamond shape in the center of it. He reached forward and placed his hand on it, fully covering the shape. The door slid open, parting in the middle, revealing yet another dark tunnel, but this one was short and there was a light only a few feet away. Ralph made his way down the hall, the walls moist from some unknown moisture, and the smell changed drastically. It smelled of oil and rain, and most of all metalwork.

Squinting as the light got brighter, Ralph appeared in front of a large arch and painted within it was a black, solid wall. He blinked a few times at it before poking it causing it to jiggle. The character jumped back,

"Whoa!" he shouted softly, definitely not expecting the wall to move at all.

He quickly shook off the shock though and proceeded to touch the form again. It continued to jiggle and ripple like a gooey water.

Ralph sighed before mumbling, "Well, it's better than a roller coster…"

And he stepped through, the liquid consuming him completely. And as his foot took its large step, the jiggling ooze receded allowing him to cross through to the other side.

He stepped fully onto cold, wet brick. A strange air hit him in a small gust, and lights dashed in front of him flickering like those thousands of blue circuits from before.

And Ralph's eyes widened.

"Holy Konami…"
