It's really hard going from sleeping right next to your lover, to not having them around at all. It hit Santana the hardest on Sunday night, after Dani texted her that she'd finally gotten home. Even though she'd somehow managed to sleep the previous night, Santana just could not fall asleep. All she could think about was how she wasn't going to see Dani until her prom.
On Monday, Santana recalled that she still had yet to ask her parents about skipping a week of school to see Dani at the end of the year. Since they had already left for work, she sent them both a text about it, before grabbing her stuff and heading outside.
Quinn picked her up like normal, and while Santana was half listening to what the blonde was saying, she texted Dani.
To Dani- Good morning, beautiful! I know you won't be up for another couple of hours, but call me when you wake up, I'll probably be at lunch xx (:
She sighed, knowing that Dani was two hours behind her, and their talking schedule would have to be weird like that. Stupid sun. As if the distance wasn't long enough.
"S, are you even listening to me?" Quinn snapped.
"Huh? Oh yeah, something about a dance," Santana vaguely recalled.
"Uh, yeah a dance! Junior prom! Are you going?" Quinn asked.
Santana shrugged. "Dani's not here. I don't have anyone to go with."
"It'll be fun, though. Plus, you have to be there to vote for me for prom queen," Quinn insisted. "Plus, half of Glee is single and they're all still going. Actually, you don't have a choice. We're singing for it, remember?"
Santana huffed. Junior prom was stupid, if you asked Santana. It was an attempt to make the half of the upperclassmen, who were still really a sort of underclassmen, feel like they mattered as much as the seniors, and more than the freshmen and sophomores. When really, they were just as underclassmen as everyone else. Plus, why should a bunch of juniors have to sing at their own junior prom? "Whatever."
"Aren't you going to LA to be Dani's date to prom?" Quinn recalled. Santana had mentioned that to her on Sunday, when she'd been texting her in place of Dani, who'd been driving.
"Of course," Santana replied.
"So why can't she come here for your junior prom?"
"Because, she spent all her money flying here for spring break to fix us. Plus, she's going to be in Lima during my senior prom, which is the one I really care about," Santana explained. "Plus, junior prom here is like in two weeks, and she wouldn't just be missing a week of nothing like I'll be missing."
"Prom here is kind of early, isn't it?" Quinn commented, and Santana nodded in agreement.
It felt nice to be able to talk to Quinn about these things. She remembered doing it before Dani ever came to Lima, but a long time before. Sophomore year, really, before any of the bad stuff with Brittany. After that, she slowly pushed Quinn further and further away. She was glad, though, to finally be getting closer to her again.
They pulled up to the school and Quinn parked in her parking spot, before they both climbed out of the car and headed for the field.
Cheerios practice was hell, of course, and Santana couldn't stop thinking about Dani throughout the whole thing. She had a bad feeling that it was going to be like this until she got to see Dani every day again. She was Dani-Deprived. Ugh, how did people handle long distance? She was going to need some tips if she was going to survive this.
At lunch, her phone started ringing. Santana smiled, because she knew that Dani would've probably been awake only about half an hour or so. "Hey, babe," she greeted as she answered the phone, and everyone at the table gave her amused looks.
"Hey," Dani replied in her sleepy voice.
"You sound tired," Santana commented, ignoring her food and her friends now that Dani was on the phone.
"Well, I just woke up," Dani replied, but then she sighed. "I can't believe we have to do this distance thing. I'm going to die. I could hardly sleep last night."
"Tell me about it," Santana muttered. "Beats not being together at all though."
"Oh yes. We definitely learned that the hard way," Dani agreed, chuckling.
"Well, at least we learned," Santana answered, amused. "Hey, where will you be in four hours?"
"Umm, lunch," Dani answered. The time thing was weird, because they were at a two hour difference. Santana had the first lunch period at McKinley. Dani had the last lunch period at her school. It was a weird thing to work out, but they'd briefly discussed it the week before.
"Well perfect, because I'll be in Glee," Santana informed her girlfriend.
She heard the smile in Dani's voice as she answered, "Great, but if you text me the whole time, you're not going to be ready for Nationals in a month."
"Oh please, we have this in the bag, even without your voice," Santana insisted coolly.
"I know you guys do," Dani agreed. "I wish I could come see you guys in New York for that. It'd be lots of fun, but no way is my mom paying for that ticket, and I don't have any money left."
"Don't worry about it," Santana shrugged it off.
"I really wish I could, though, considering I was in the first two competitions. I feel like I'm obligated to at least be there for your National Championship," Dani muttered.
"Well, maybe you can schmooze your mom or dad into paying for the ticket," Santana suggested with a light laugh.
"Probably not, but if it involves seeing you, I'm obviously going to try it," Dani admitted, laughing as well. "Hey, I have to leave for school now! I love you! I'll text you when I'm at lunch."
"Okay, love you, too," Santana replied. "Drive safely." They hung up, and Santana set her phone down and looked up to see her friends' eyes on her. "What?"
Mercedes snorted as she broke into laughter, and Quinn gave Santana an amused look. "You're just so... different."
"What's wrong with that? I'm no longer having to pretend to be happy. Sue me," Santana snapped, but she smiled slightly.
Glee couldn't come fast enough. When she finally got to it, though, and turned on her phone, she immediately received a text from her girlfriend, who was probably halfway through her lunch period.
From Dani- Hey, babe! How was school?
To Dani- So not as good as it would've been if you were here. ):
From Dani- Aww baby ): Well, if it's any consolation, I'm not having a great day without you here either ):
To Dani- Your pain isn't going to make me feel any better, love. ;P
From Dani- Hmm, good point.
To Dani- But maybe a selfie of my favorite person in the world would help...
She received a text from Dani with a picture attached, and sure enough, it was a selfie of Dani grinning in her lunch room. The picture was funny, though, because it was obvious that someone had been trying to push their way into the picture.
From Dani- Sorry, Anna was pushing me trying to get into the picture. Also, I can't believe I just took a selfie in front of a ton of people for you...
To Dani- You're so whipped. ;)
She didn't get an immediate reply, so she looked up to see if everyone else was in the choir room yet. Most everyone was, talking loudly about something that Santana chose to ignore as she got another text message through.
From Dani- OH MY GOSH HI I'M ANNA AND I JUST STOLE DANI'S PHONE AND SHE'S CHASING ME THROUGH THE SCHOOL WHILE I'M TYPING THIS BUT GURL WE TOTES GOTTA START TALKING BECAUSE YOU MAKIN' DANI SMILE LIKE A CRAZY PERSON AND I GOTTA GET TA KNOW YA SO TEXT THIS NUMBER!
There was a phone number tagged at the end of the text message, and Santana had to try really, really hard not to laugh at Dani's best friend. Sure, she'd heard a lot about how nice and helpful Anna was to Dani, and she'd figured that the girl had to be pretty awesome if she was Dani's best friend. Now, though, she had a good feeling that she and Anna were going to get along great.
She texted the number.
To Anna- Girl, you're crazy. Nice to meet you, I'm Santana. :P
Then she got a text through from Dani.
From Dani- Oh my god. I can't believe that just happened. It's a freaking miracle that no teacher caught us. I just chased Anna through the entire f-ing school! UGH.
To Dani- Are you all sweaty now?
From Dani- Why?
To Dani- Umm because you're hot when you're sweaty.
From Dani- You're crazy. I gotta go, lunch is over ): Have fun in Glee! I'll FaceTime you after school! Xx
To Dani- Enjoy the rest of your day! Xx Love you, baby!
From Dani- Love you too!
"Dani's got you smiling like an idiot, even when she's not here," Puck teased Santana suddenly, who just scowled at him and locked her phone. Just in time, too, because Mr. Shue walked into the room bearing a letter.
"Over the break, I received a letter from the national show choir committee," he started. "They had a problem with the concert hall they booked for Nationals in New York."
"Oh no," Rachel muttered. "No, no! Nationals has to be in New York!"
"Calm down, Rachel," Mr. Shue insisted. "I think we'll be almost as pleased with the new location of Nationals..."
Santana bit her lip. She had a really weird feeling that Nationals were being moved to...
"Los Angeles, California!" Mr. Shue exclaimed.
Santana's eyes widened. Holy shit. They were going to be in LA for Nationals in a month. Dani was in LA. If there was a god above, he was definitely giving Santana some special treatment. Rachel muttered, "It's no New York, but I guess it's not half bad."
"I know what Ms. In Love is thinking right now," Mercedes stated, smirking as they all looked at Santana, who scowled.
"Screw all of you," Santana grumbled, but inside she was jumping for joy.
"You might want to put a lock on the hotel room doors when we're there, Mr. Shue. So Santana doesn't try to sneak out, or her girlfriend sneak in," Puck suggested.
Santana rolled her eyes. "Hey—"
"Oh come on, as if you two wouldn't do that," Quinn piped up. Santana hesitated, and then just rolled her eyes again and sat back in her seat, not able to help the half smile that appeared on her face.
Mr. Shue just shook his head and continued with something about Nationals. Santana, however, took out her phone and texted her girlfriend, even though she would be in class.
To Dani- Nationals location got moved. Kisses for the one who guesses where it is now... ;)
