So I figured, there has to be at least some awkward moments when a video game enters a world where people have merchandise of them, right? So that's where this chapter came from. Enjoy!
"I wish I could see their reactions to their stories…" Teddy told her uncle with a sad look on her face. The two were in the kitchen; Xandermon sitting at the dining table reading the newspaper, and Teddy by the kitchen counter mixing the batter for a second batch of pancakes, the first being on the table.
"You'll be able to."
"What do you mean?"
"The machine is recording them the entire time they're watching or playing or listening or whatever it is they're doing… No more, no less than that."
"Is that really necessary, Uncle?"
"I have to keep an eye on them, you never know with animated characters when they enter the real world. I have to watch their reactions and such before I trust them with anything. The machine won't be recording when the TVs and tablets are off, and it won't record anything inappropriate. So that's that. I'm going to be watching them, so it's your loss if you don't watch it with me."
"You really trust that machine that much, Uncle?"
"More than I trust you, Beatrice. You're human, you make mistakes. I programmed the machine to not make any mistakes. I won't hear anything else concerning this."
"Alrighty then…" Tedy answered with a sigh. "You know, I just realized that I never told them about when they need to eat or… when nature calls."
"The doors to the bathrooms are right there in their rooms, they each have their own! They can figure that out! And they don't need to be told that they will have to eat sometime in the next month! They can come here when they're hungry."
"But what if they think we'll tell them when to come eat or that we'll take them they're food?"
"I shouldn't have to tell you of all people that they are smarter and you think." Teddy nodded.
"I suppose you're right…"
And then, as if waiting for the perfect timing, Emmy came into the kitchen. Before she could even notice, Teddy swirled around so that her back faced the countertop. She then tried sitting at the edge of the counter, but in her haste to do so just made herself look weird.
"Morning, Xandermon, Teddy!" She said with a new morning glow in her eyes. "Those pancakes smell good! Are we allowed to have some!"
"Of course, Emmy." Xandermon answered.
"Morning." Teddy mumbled.
"Hey…" Emmy started. "Isn't that the Powerpuff Girls? Like younger or something?" Teddy looked down at her t-shirt which had green, pink and blue stripes and had a giant picture of five-year-old Powerpuffs on the front.
"Oh, yeah…" Teddy answered, embarrassed that she had to answer such a question.
"So cool! And that, that looks like Aang's necklace, only smaller." Emmy said as well, observing the necklace that looked just like Aang's if it was a choker.
"M-hm…"
"Beatrice," Xandermon started in his plain, emotionless voice. "stop sitting like that! It looks weird. And why don't you get something for Emmy to drink? Emmy, do you prefer hot chocolate or iced green tea?"
"Oh, hot chocolate sound heavenly, if you don't mind, of course!"
"Of course she doesn't mind! Beatrice?"
"Yes." Teddy stated, still with her back against the countertop. "But can I put on my trench coat first?"
"Beatrice, you know those trench coats are too toxic to take into the kitchen!" Emmy's face turned pale at the sound of the word 'toxic'.
"Don't worry, Emmy." Teddy said in a comforting voice. "It's just the food that can get messed up with the toxins! My uncle wouldn't let anything be done that could jeopardize anyone's health! He wouldn't hurt a fly! Actually, I'm not gonna say that. He would hurt a fly. He's hurt them many times before. He would also hurt all other kinds of insects; beetles, spiders… especially spiders. I hate spiders so much!" Emmy smiled.
"I like you!" She said as she turned to Xandermon. "And you're my new sister!" she turned to point at Teddy. Teddy went even paler than before, assuming that was even possible.
"Gee, th-thanks." Teddy found it hard to process the fact that her second favorite fictional character ever was not only here, talking to her, but calling her her new sister!"
"Beatrice," Xandermon started. "You're usually not this flustered! She doesn't even do this with her crushes…"
"UNCLE!"
"Can you please just start with the hot chocolate? And where's my coffee? By the way?"
"Working on it… Can you bring me my jacket first?"
"Beatrice, it's not even cold! … Oh, I see."
"What is it?" Emmy asked.
"Her back pockets." Xandermon answered with a sly smile.
"Her… back pockets?" Teddy turned even paler.
"Stop right there, Uncle!"
"You know that logo that Professor Layton has, Emmy?"
"You mean the one with the fancy top hat and L he uses to seal his letters and that he has on his office door?" Xandermon looked to Teddy for confirmation. She sighed and nodded.
"Beatrice here has sewn that logo onto the back pockets of her jeans, and now she's too afraid to turn around." Teddy gave her uncle a cold glare which he ignored. Emmy gave a sympathetic smile.
"It's ok, Teddy! I don't think it's weird at all!"
"But you'll still laugh at me!"
"I won't laugh at you, I promise!"
"…"
"I'll make sure Professor Layton and Luke don't see it."
"Fine." She turned around and began to make the hot chocolate for Emmy, and Emmy sat down to start chowing down on pancakes.
