TenTen stalked down the street, an almost tangible aura of anger emanating from her slouched-over body. The grip she had on her poor battered umbrella was turning her knuckles white. If anyone were to pass her by, they probably would've given her a wide berth. But no one passed by. Why you ask? Maybe because most people weren't forced to walk all the way to their work and back during a day smack-dab in the middle of monsoon season. But then again, most people didn't have a boss from hell that didn't care if the roads were closed and trains were shut down.
'Manhattan is a small city where barely anyone needs to drive. If this were the 1800s, you would not even think of complaining.'
"Yeah well, if this were the 1800s, I wouldn't be working at your STUPID LAW FIRM." TenTen yelled to the fast approaching bullets of water above her. A raindrop splashed right onto her indignant eye and she stumbled, almost falling into an open manhole.
TenTen was having a bad day.
Pursing her lips and trying to bury herself further into her favourite, but not waterproof, coat, TenTen dragged herself another three blocks to the apartment building. As she passed under the covering, the flap suddenly buckled, emptying all of the water it had been collecting all day along with dirt and leaves onto TenTen's already drenched head. She groaned and pushed open the door.
She hummed with relief as the incessant rain no longer pummeled her, but made musical sounds as it hit the metal pipes and balconies outside. She reached out to press the elevator button only to find that it was covered with a sign that said ' Out of order. Probably for the next few days. Do not attempt to get into the elevator. We mean you, Ms. Durham.' TenTen groaned, knowing she had to climb 8 floors, dragging her bag and battered umbrella with her.
The lock made a satisfying click as TenTen burst through her apartment door, drenched to the bone. But her key wouldn't come out the door. She jostled it and pulled it and wiggled it, until finally it just gave up and broke in the lock. TenTen began to turn red as she tried to contain her anger. Last time she'd gotten mad at her door, she almost threw it off its hinges and the landlord had to warn her about damaging the walls. She punched the nearby coat hanger, the loud noise of it falling over along with a couple of picture frames on the wall bringing her little comfort. She dumped her soaking bag and umbrella in the hallway, knowing she'd have to clean that up before it went into the floorboards. She closed the door and kicked the toppled coat hanger, managing to poke the webbed part in between her toes on the one pointy part of the whole rod.
"Mother fffuuuuuuuu-." TenTen took in a deep breath, only to start choking on her own saliva. Finally, she just gave up and ran into her room, dumping her soaked clothes into the hamper and clambering into the warm fluffy comforter. She drifted to sleep immediately, exhausted from her day of absolute horror.
The smell of something absolutely divine sizzling away in the kitchen woke TenTen up. She sniffed the air like a small dog and slowly sat up. The sky outside was finally clear for once and the sun was just setting as TenTen threw the covers off of her underwear-clad body. Even though TenTen was really tempted to skip taking a shower and just go towards the smells of heavenly food, she stopped herself and went into the shower. After a steamy shower that lasted a few minutes more than it should've, TenTen dried herself off and put on fresh underwear and a shirt that was too big and too sheer. But TenTen was tired, hungry, and didn't want to wear pants.
Finally, she followed her nose into the kitchen, where the table was all set up with some of TenTen's favourite rainy day foods. She felt a hug from behind and immediately smiled. She was no longer tired or cranky. She turned around and hugged Neji, breathing in the smell of fresh cotton.
"Good morning TenTen," Neji said amusedly. "How are you now?" TenTen murmured something into his chest and yawned. He guided her to the table and attempted to get TenTen to sit down. Instead, she refused to let go and looked at Neji from under her lashes.
"Couldn't we just eat while watching a movie? Please nejiiiiii, pleeeeeeease." Neji sighed. TenTen knew how much he hated people eating on their nice couch.
"Fine, but you're cleaning up!" TenTen immediately let go and squealed, rushing to the huge stack of dvds she'd accumulated over the years. Soon enough, TenTen and Neji were watching Roman Holiday while finishing off the chicken and fettuccine alfredo that TenTen so loved. TenTen murmured certain lines of the movie she knew by heart and soon found herself drifting again. She yawned and Neji turned off the tv. The clatter of forks and plates against the metal sink woke TenTen up again and she helped clean the rest of the dishes. Neji and TenTen talked in low volumes, their voices creating a melodious murmur amongst the slowly pattering rain that came back and the humming of the dishwasher.
"Alright, let's go to sleep. I think the roads will be open tomorrow. By the way, I got the landlord to come up, he took the key out of the lock and said he'll get the locksmith to come by in two days." TenTen groaned and got up from the kitchen chair, stumbling towards the bedroom. She flopped into her place and Neji got in on the other side, doing his normal routine. He kissed TenTen on the cheek and turned off the lights, settling his arm around her. TenTen stared at his face for a bit and smiled contentedly. Yes, this had been a very good day.
