"A motive?"

That was the question I wished I hadn't asked. Monokuma had gathered all of us in Centre Circle on our fourth day. We'd all fallen into routine at this point; almost as if we hadn't been kidnapped and shoved in a city simply for us to kill each other. I was standing towards the front in the center of our mush of 16 bodies. Sabi was standing next to me on the right, and Mason stood at my left. He had his arms folded, giving the stuffed bear a nice glare. She, on the other hand, stood there visibly intimidated. I was less infuriated or intimidated and more confused. Monokuma just laughed, before getting out 16 pieces of paper.

"Yes, Soriyu-chan, a motive. A nice, fresh incentive for murder!"

"Oh great, this nonsense again," grumbled Yo. He adjusted his fedora before yawning slightly. Akiyama gave him a rather hard pat on the back, making him grunt a little while she remarked on how she "woke him up".

"Quiet you, or else I'll give you your incentive last!"

Yo sighed loudly, and Akiyama raspberried him. Monokuma harrumphed, gathering the papers in alphabetical order. They were placed into small holders, each with our family names imprinted on the front. After that, he tossed them out amongst us with a one, two, three.

Surprisingly enough, they all ended up landing by the correct person. I bent down and picked mine up, ripping off the tape sealing the holder and took out the paper. It wasn't the wordiest thing I'd ever seen, but I felt my stomach drop as I read it.

Soriyu, Hikaru

Phobias

Phasmophobia, Fear of Ghosts. Nyctophobia, Fear of the Dark or of Night.

"W-wha..? I-I'm not-" All I could do was stammer for words. How would they even know that?! A-and it's not like it was true. But as everyone stood, staring at their papers with the same despairing expression, all Monokuma did was laugh.

"I see you all like the motive! If you don't want your fears to be released to the group, I suggest you stage a murder! The first fear will be revealed in the morning if you don't step up your game!"

With those words, Monokuma left the fountain stage and disappeared, leaving the group in an uncomfortable silence. I looked around me, hoping to get a good image. Nobody actually cared about this, right? This is such a stupid thing to kill over!

Then again, it was beyond my imagination what some of them could be scared of. I know everyone would think I was a gigantic baby if they knew, and I'd probably be subject to harsh treatment. That…didn't sound appealing at all. And some of the stuff could be pretty bad, now that I really think about it.

I took the scrap of paper and shoved it harshly in my pants pocket, creating a large, echoing crumpling noise. Without shooting any of the others a glance, I rushed over to my bike, kicking out the kickstand and getting on. The feeling of being watched got further away as I did as well, and the sinking feeling of nervousness only grew as the other shrank.

My bike was lazily thrown against the wall rather than being locked. I wasn't in much of a mood to lock it. I really wasn't in much of a mood to do anything. With a click, the door to the library swung open and my key ring went back to coat pocket. I gently shut it behind me and trudged to my office chair.

In all honesty? I was probably looking too far into the whole predicament. Nobody would kill for their fear, right? That would be stupid. Obviously.

The creaking of the library door was what snapped me out of my thoughts. I turned my attention to it, to see Atsushi walking out. He closed the door behind him and looked over to me while slightly scratching the back of his head.

"Ah, h-hello, Soriyu-kun."

"Hey, Atsushi-kun."

He wandered over to my desk, leaning against it awkwardly.

"I…um…what's up?"

I shrugged. "Nothing really. What brings you here?"

Atsushi scratched his cheek slightly with a laugh. "I didn't feel like…being alone? But I also don't want to die, y'know?"

"I see what you mean. Why not Carl-kun and Alicia-san, though?"

"You were closer."

I nodded, leaning back in my chair. I really didn't have any idea of what to say, but I also didn't want there to be an awkward air.

"Do you mind if I stay a while?"

I shook my head. "Not at all."

With a smile, he thanked me, and walked to one of the bookshelves, looking and skimming. After waiting a few moments to make sure he didn't need anything, I flipped open my Student ID and checked the time.

11:58. I had about an hour until lunch.

In all honesty though, I understood what he'd meant by not wanting to be alone, but also not wanting to die. Safety in numbers, but danger around others. It was chilling to say the very least.

In a moment of pure paranoia, my vision flicked up from my ID to him. He was standing in the science section, reading a book on medicine or something of the sort. He and I were alone in this library. Was he going to…?

No. The odds of that happening were…well…impossible.

Right?

No.

Just then, the door creaked open once more, revealing a small boy with a cat-eared beanie. Carl looked around prudently before setting his sights on Atsushi. With a big gulp of air, he looked prepared to yell out.

"SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

He looked at me and grumbled.

Atsushi was startled by my sudden shushing and popped up from his book. Seeing Carl, he shoved the book roughly back in the shelf, causing a few to tumble back down on him.

"Ack – god damnit!"

In a fit of what seemed to be rage, he took the books and once more shoved them in. A few more fell out and the ones that didn't were messed up completely. Something in me snapped, causing me to jump out of my seat and glare at him.

"CAN YOU NOT MONOKUMA WILL HAVE MY ASS ON A PLATTER!"

"I'M TRYING TO FIX IT!"

"WELL STOP BECAUSE YOU ARE FAILING-"

I jumped out of my seat and rushed over to the bookshelf, harmlessly shooing Atsushi away. With a sigh, I took out the books from that specific line of the shelf and placed them into a neat pile. Atsushi grumbled and walked over to Carl, the latter of which choosing to ignore our previous dilemma.

"Atsunyan, where have you been? We've been looking all over for you!"

"We?"

"Yeah, Alinyan has been helping me too! You rushed off after the announcement, so I got worried. Teinyan said he saw you going in the direction of the library, so I came here!"

I grumbled a disapproval. Nobody went chasing after me when I split.

"I'm flattered Carl-kun, really, I am! But you didn't have to…"

"But that's what friends are for, right?"

Atsushi turned a little pink, but smiled nonetheless. The two of them shared a laugh while the tension released itself from the atmosphere.

"Thanks, Soriyu-kun! See ya later!"

"Bye, Sorinyan!"

The two left as someone else entered the library, slightly confused by the continuous laughter from the boys. She looked at them and then to me, walking over to the reception desk and placing a book on it.

"D-do I even want to ask what h-happened there?"

She pointed to the mess Atsushi made, and I simply sighed.

"It'd be best if you didn't."

"Are you s-sure you don't need help?"

With a small smile, I nodded.

"Yeah. I appreciate the gesture though, Emi."

Despite being as shy as usual, Emi was what I could consider a regular at the library. She liked reading up on various topics, and has done that every day so far during her lunch period. I give her a ride back once the time's up. It's nice to have some company.

She picked up a new book from one of the other shelves and contently curled herself up in a chair. I finished cleaning what I needed to clean and went back to my own, though, I was rather bugged by the whole situation. Fear was such an odd motive to start out with. With information such as that, it would've been logically smarter to play it at a later date, yeah?

Unless they had something better up their sleeve? Either that or they're not that tactically brilliant, which I could see.

But even so, I was still worried.

That night was a lot colder than usual. It had occurred to me briefly that it did seem to be getting colder little by little as the week went on, but it was freezing that night. I wished I'd bought a heavier jacket, honestly.

I was wearing the same outfit I'd worn the day I'd arrived, shivering into my jacket. The janitor's closet probably wasn't insulated or something. So I hurried to grab what I needed and got out.

Today was a Friday, or so Monokuma had told us, so Mason decided to let the café stay open late. I decided a cup of coffee wouldn't be so bad at the moment, a swiftly made my way there. It was the same as it was in the daylight, except notably warmer, and smelled better. He had set up a lot of candles.

Mason himself was behind the counter with a plate in front of him. He was jotting down some notes on to a notepad and looking over them a few times. He blew his hair out of his face with a short but stern huff, placed his notepad down, and turned to cook whatever he was cooking. He did a double-take however, and his eyes landed on me.

"Hey, Soriyu-kun! Nice to see you! What can I get you?"

"Tall black if you've got it."

"Sure thing. Want some milk?"

"Please."

Swiftly checking whatever he was cooking beforehand, he made his way over to the machine and made my coffee. Though, curiosity did get the better of me.

"So, whatcha making?"

"Oh, a batch of croissants. Atsushi-kun preordered them. He should be here to pick them up soon. And here you are, that'll be 5 monocoins!" I handed him the coins and took the coffee, grabbing some napkins as well. "Thanks Mason-kun!"

He smiled heartily and waved. "Anytime my friend!"

On the way out, I noticed there was a line of water bottles that hadn't been there before. The lining was blue and the logo was a picture of Monokuma. Knowing his impressive naming skills, I'm sure the name is no better than Monowater. Picking one from the lineup, I twirled it in my hand to read the name. Despluid, by Monokuma. Good god, was a ten year old running this show?

"Those are the new water bottles Monokuma brought in about three hours ago." Mason cleaned a dish as he went on. "So far only Alicia-san and Yo-kun have had them. I haven't heard any complaints from them, so I guess they're safe." I nodded understandingly and put it back down. I had my coffee, so I'd be alright drink-wise.

"I suppose I'll be off then. Goodnight, Mason-kun!"

"Sweet dreams, Soriyu-kun! Don't let the ghosties getcha!"

God dammit.

With the impending doom of ghosties getting me on my back (not that they would, obviously) I hastily made my exit. The sooner I got my work done, the sooner I could go to bed.

About an hour – maybe a little over – passed before I started making my final stops. I honestly hated my job. The warm coffee was long disposed of and the chill of the night remained steadily – gross and freezing. I would give anything for some warmth and shelter from the dark, honestly.

The last section of the town was near the garage and the furniture store, which was to the far right of the town. The southernmost building was the furniture store and also my last stop. I only had a few more to go. The words echoed in my mind loud and clear.

But.

There was a light still shining in the furniture store window. The call for bedtime (except Soriyu, thanks Monokuma) was probably about fifteen minutes ago, maybe more. Who the hell could be up and about at this hour?

There was at first a feeling of confusion, but a small pang of doubt. Maybe Atsushi just left the light on by accident? Maybe he fell asleep there? No he wouldn't, he was too worried about the motive-

It was then that I realized I was making excuses not to go in there.

Because I knew that it wasn't a good sign.

I picked my pace up to a run, leaving the janitor's supplies in the dust. I felt the wind whipping my hair as I rushed down. It was further than I'd anticipated. When I reached the door I fumbled with the keys. Which one was the right one? For some reason I couldn't remember. Maybe it was because I was so focused on my shaking hands, or how warm the building felt. Why did it feel so warm? That didn't make sense. But I needed to stop thinking about it and just open the damn door-

The key was retrieved and shoved into the lock. With a clink, it turned, and I threw it open with everything I had.

And god, I wish I hadn't.

"Wha…? Why is…? What's…?"

Because in front of me,

"Why…who…"

Was the distorted corpse of Atsushi Hagiwara, the Super Duper High School Level Archer.

It was a blur after that, really. It wasn't the first time I'd seen a corpse. It wasn't the last. Maybe it was because the circumstances were different? Maybe it was because it was war? This wasn't war, though. This was an innocent guy who was laughing and smiling only hours earlier. And here he was. Dead. And someone killed him.

Based on his appearance, it wasn't a question that he was murdered. His hair was frizzed and sort of…wet? His body was covered in a black soot, and in the center of all of that, he was pierced with a broken table leg. There was blood everywhere, but the place was strangely warm. A broken plate was on the opposite side of the room, next to the wall I noted, and a table with a broken off leg was next to it. Judging on appearance alone, it was easy to see the killer did a pretty sloppy job. Did that mean the death wasn't planned…?

While all these thoughts circled in one part of my brain, the other was screaming at me to move. To wake him up, to do something, to get someone. But who could I get? Maybe, I'd be killed too…

I caught myself backing out of the doorway and back into the street. I lost all senses for that short period of time – I couldn't understand my jumbled thoughts, my vision was blurred, and to top it off, all I could hear was a sharp ringing in my ears. It felt like eternity. It was barely a minute.

What snapped me out of all my thoughts was the collision between me and a person. The ringing stopped as I heard the sharp yelp behind me, and laughter soon following. Though I couldn't make out who it was, I still spun around in a panic anyway.

Alicia looked up at me with her bright yet irritated violet eyes. Beside her was a boisterous Kimura, laughing his ass off.

"What's the big deal, Soriyu-kun? Didn't you hear this loud asshole?" She smacked Kimura's leg, leading him to stop laughing.

"Jeez, Davis! Lay off, that's a fine! Hmm? Soriyu-san, you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"DON'T! I-I mean…um…"

Alicia stood up, cocking her head slightly. "Soriyu-kun, is something wrong?"

I looked at the furniture store and back to them. Working up my courage, I gulped.

"It's Atsushi-kun."

"DING DANG DONG! A body has been discovered! After a certain amount of time, the class trial will begin!"

It was only a matter of time before the rest of the students gathered at the furniture store. I was sitting against the building with Alicia as they all showed up. There was something missing in her eyes that night – some lack of color or feeling that was usually there was gone, in an instant. Kimura was leaning against the wall, looking at the ground. Even he seemed a little bothered by the whole situation – or at least that's what he showed us.

"Oh my god…!"

"WHAT THE FUCK?!"

"Who could…?"

"Atsunyan…?"

"W-why is this happening?!"

"Oh god, Atsushi-kun…"

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!"

Carl eventually came and swapped out with me in taking care of Alicia. I found myself just wandering amongst the group, not really talking to anyone or saying anything until Monokuma showed up. His obnoxious voice silenced everyone immediately, causing him to laugh.

"PAH! You should see your faces, this is amazing! All the despair in your eyes, ugh, I could just die!"

Kagegami stood up. "This was you, wasn't it? You're the one that killed him, AREN'T YOU?!" He rushed over to the front of the group where Monokuma stood, his fist ready to throw.

Regulas grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back. "Don't do anything harsh – we don't need you dying too."

Dying. Death. Nobody had actually said it outright. Nobody had actually said that he was dead.

Kagegami was also clearly feeling the shock of this, as his face was written in horror. He simply stared at Regulas, void of anything but shock, and stepped back with his head down. Regulas kept a steady outlook, but it seemed that he'd come to terms with the situation better than most; though whether that was good or bad is debatable. Teiko, Soma, and Sabi also had a lack of expression on the manner, but unlike the former two, Sabi was frantically changing where she was looking and shifting her posture. Mason also held some ground, but he was biting his nails.

No one else had the same composure that they did, and fear was the only emotion I could feel in the room. Monokuma must've had the same understanding, because of his crude statements that followed.

"Aw, what's this? Are you all scared? It looks like one of you couldn't contain that fear, could you? Upupu, I'm so ready for another class trial!"

"Class Trial? I remember you mentioning that once…" Yo spoke up from the back, raising his hand slightly. "If you don't mind me asking…what's that?"

"On the contrary, Mister Yoshihiro, I'm very glad you asked!" He jumped and did a flip, grabbing a microphone out of thin air.

"You see, simply killing the guy? That doesn't get you out of here. That'd be too eaassyyy! What fun is that? So, in order to get out of here, you not only have to kill, you have to get away with it too!"

Akiyama piped up from next to Yo. "Get…away…?"

"That's right. You have to fool all of your classmates and lead them to pick someone else instead!"

Yo again. "What happens if you…fail?"

Monokuma simply smiled. "What happens when someone commits murder normally? After they get convicted, I mean."

Akiyama gulped. "They go to jail?"

"PSH. ONLY THE PANSY PLACES DO THAT. What's the other option?"

Yo and Akiyama shared a nervous glance. "That…"

"They get killed." Teiko deadpanned. "They're put on death row and killed."

"AND BINGO WAS HIS NAMEO!" Monokuma spun around and posed like the fucking anime trash weeb he is.

"But wait," Carl, who was next to Alicia and behind Monokuma, spoke up. "What happens if the killer successfully tricks everyone?"

Monokuma laughed. "Well obviously. They get to leave!"

Carl and the rest of the group held their breath.

"…And everyone else gets punished instead."

My stomach dropped.

"So, you better investigate and gather up that information as fast as you can! Make sure you have sufficient evidence to help prove the killer! And, well, don't bias yourself, obviously. You'll end up failing and, well, who wants that?"

With a whip of his hand, a small notification went off on all of our student IDs. With slow movements, I grabbed mine out of my pocket and flipped it open. It was saying it received new data.

"The data you've received is the Monokuma File 3.1! It'll give you all the basics for the murder: time of death, weapon, the locations of injury – well, I will be leaving out one that you'll have to figure out for yourself. Other than that, take a stab at it! Have fun!"

On the screen flashed what he'd dubbed it: the Monokuma File 3.1. After a short animation, it switched to the display.

First there was a picture of the body. Beneath that was a silhouette covered in pink spots. There was one in his stomach, one in his right hand, and a light pink coating all around his body, though darker on his right side. The time of death was 9:23 PM. As for the cause…

"The cause of death isn't here." Emi pointed to the screen, showing Monokuma what she meant. He simply laughed and walked away, leaving Emi to sigh and do the same. I figured it was time to start, then.

The first thing I investigated was the garbage can. Obviously there had to be something hiding in there, and I would find it. Hopefully.

And right I was.

Inside was an empty water bottle with most of the label ripped off aside from a small piece still sticking to the glue. The cap was sloppily put on as if the person had been in a rush to put it there – same with the rip. Although slightly insignificant, I decided it was enough for me.

Empty Water Bottle

"Why would someone rip off the label? That's kind of…pointless."

I could say whatever I wanted to, but it wouldn't change anything. So, with a sigh, I got up and walked over to the body.

The wooden floor surrounding the body was a blackish color; the rest of the room graced with a subtle brown. And, what I noticed about the black bits, was that they were strangely…wet. It wasn't from the blood either – they were just wet.

Damp Floor

The body itself was wet too, but I figured that was just the blood. As mentioned before, there was a black soot around him. His face looked quite distraught, and his body was poised in a very tense manner. And in the center of all that was a broken table leg. With a quick gaze around the room, I was able to find the broken table in the far left corner. It was in the midst of some broken things, so it was probably thrown.

Broken Table

Looking down at Atsushi one last time, I could see something on his hand. It was a burn mark, I realized. Kind of out-of-place if you ask me.

Atsushi's Hand

Beside the archer was a rolled-up carpet, tossed aside as quickly as it was picked up, it seemed. It was also covered in black soot and had a few holes in it. The carpet, if I remembered correctly, used to be on the left hand side – right about where the mess is.

Rolled Up Carpet

And speaking of around that area, there was another out-of-the-ordinary thing around that location, splattered on the wall. Blood. It looked as if someone had dragged their hand down the wall, leaving that streak of blood. That definitely wasn't good. And my guess was that the broken plate under it was the culprit of that one.

And, oddly, under the plate was a piece of black cloth.

Distant Blood Stain

Broken Plate

Black Cloth

Mason ticked from behind me. He pointed at the plate on the floor, a forlorn expression on his face.

"That's the plate from the croissants that Atsushi ordered," he murmured. "He'd picked them up from the shop at about 7." His eyes drifted over to the garbage, and his tone lowered. "He hadn't gotten a water bottle, though. Only Alicia-san, Carl-kun, and Soma-kun did."

I gave him a stunned look. He simply nodded slightly and walked away, leaving me to simply think.

Mason's Testimony

With that, I turned to ask other people if they possibly knew anything. Firstly, I turned to Sabi.

"Hey."

"Oh, hi Soriyu-kun."

I asked her if she'd seen something – anything, really – that could help with the case. She simply shook her head, but did point in Yo's direction.

"I didn't, but he did. You should talk to him if you want any answers."

I nodded and thanked her, turning to Yo.

"Evening, Yo-kun."

"Ah, hello Soriyu-kun. What can I do for you?"

"I need some information," I started. "I happened to hear that you have some that could be particularly useful to the case."

He blinked once before nodding. "Earlier, I saw Atsushi-kun leaving the apartment. It was probably around 7. I asked him where he was going, but he brushed it off." He thought for a moment. "He seemed…nervous. About what, I don't know. Maybe he knew he was going to be…?"

I nodded and thanked him for his time.

Yo's Testimony

I ended up asking a few other people, but no one knew anything I didn't know. I was just about to give up, when I'd saw it lying at my feet. It was a wire, disheveled and fried. One end looked like it'd exploded, and the other looked like it was forcibly removed from something. Either way, I knew good piece of evidence when I saw it.

Fried Wire

And, as I wrote down the words in my notebook, another bell rang. I felt a shiver run down my spine as it sunk in.

"Upupu, time's up! Please make your way to Centre Square so we can begin!"

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I left the building.

The fountain at Centre Square is where everyone gathered. Nobody said anything, we all just stood there, shuffling awkwardly until the entire group arrived. And when it did meet completion, Monokuma stopped pacing around the fountain and laughed. His voice was booming, being the only noise that night next to the fountain's trickling of water. He hopped off the fountain, whistling loudly.

The fountain wasn't a fountain after that.

It slowly shifted up into an elevator; a large, spacious, cold elevator. He beckoned us to enter, waving his arm.

"He~lloooo?"

Slowly, the group began to pile in. One by one, the space was filled, 15 bodies lumped together. I was the last to enter, standing in the far back. Mason stood in the top left, Emi in the top right. Sabi took the back left and Kimura took the back right. Standing in the vicinity of Kimura was Soma. Nikiyo was lumped somewhere in the middle with Kagegami and Izumi. Akiyama, Yo, and Teiko stood just outside the middle, closer towards the right. Alicia, Carl, and Regulas got the left.

The elevator started with a jolt; first crawling, then very quickly racing. I could barely hear it as it screeched on the way down, yet I knew it was screeching. Something in me just didn't want to hear it, so I wasn't going to.

It stopped the same way it started, with a sharp jolt. It hummed a little before it opened, leading the group to a circular trial stand. 17 places, 15 people. It was going swimmingly for Monokuma, I betted. The room in itself was decorated meticulously and carefully. I could tell there was a hint somewhere that would lead me to the killer, but I couldn't think straight at the moment. I could only observe, and so I did.

It was striped black and pink with the occasional neon green star that hung down from the ceiling. The lighting was very plain and had no fancy effects, but the lights adorning the monarch's chair that Monokuma placed himself in did. I didn't even feel like asking about that one. While he got to sit, we were forced to stand at the aforementioned trial circle with 17 places. There was a nameplate on every stand, even the one with the picture of Atsushi and a red X. Another thing I didn't feel like commenting on at the moment.

I stood off to the side, closer to the elevator. Next to me was Akiyama, and next to her was Teiko. Then came the spot where Kerry was supposed to be, but wasn't, which was right in front of the elevator, facing Monokuma. Beside her was Kimura, then Nikiyo. After that came Mason, Alicia, and Atsushi. Izumi, Kagegami, Sabi, Yo, Carl. Regulas and Soma followed suit, with Soma standing next to Emi. Emi was beside me.

It took another few moments for us to all gather, Moonokuma lazily laying down on the chair. When he saw we all filed in, he laughed once more, sitting up.

"Remember, boys and girls," he began with a grin. "Your goal here is to find out who killed your friend Atsushi! If you don't, you'll all follow in his footsteps, and the killer will go free! Any questions?"

No one said a word.

Monokuma smiled. "Then let the trial begin!"

Feel free to kill me bc I should've had this done months ago

I meant to make this a double update but I realised that would've been confusing and I wanted to have an update ASAP. So, a midst all my other projects, I will get the trial finished. As you are reading this I am probably working on it, if I'm not in school.

The play is this week! Which means I have rehearsal until 10 o'clock every night. On top of that is homework and Social Life. Also, I'm making a remix of one of my favorite songs, Dark Symmetry, by Giga-P. If you haven't heard it, go check it out.

In short? This school-year has been a smack in the face. I didn't do too hot last quarter, so I've been pulling it up this quarter. I'm getting to a comfortable spot, so once the play passes, I should have a lot more time.

Back in the day, the reason I avoided working on this until about November-December was because of DR:AE. I had to change a lot of stuff because of it, including some Mastermind stuff. I'm not going back and changing anything because I managed to make it work and still incorporate DR:AE, but it took a while. Thankfully, it's all good.

And speaking of things i'm planning on doing, Free Time and Special Events are probably going to be held off until AFTER the main story is finished. I figured that was the best way to go.

With that, I think I'm just about done here, and I'm going to keep working on WEID. I'll see what I can get done, and if the trial is easy, it might be later tonight!

Don't expect it though lmao
