"In the end, you will find out whether you made the right choices. If you really did what was best. It cannot lie. It is the moment of truth."
Katniss Pov:
Finnick really did make me feel better, since he always seems to know what to say. He knew what I was really thinking, even if his perspective is slightly different. The effect on me offset the horrible feelings that Gale gave me beforehand.
Gale isn't the same guy that I knew and loved.
He is different.
I am different.
It adds to my heartbreak, knowing that nothing will stay the same.
As I am being lead to the execution, Finnick's words echo in my head.
Will he really finish the other one, no matter which of the two I pick?
I can only imagine the hell Snow put him through, so I have no doubt that Finnick would kill Snow without a second thought.
But what about Coin?
I don't ever remember seeing those two in any sort of disagreement.
But then again, he might just do it for me.
Finnick is that guy. He would put aside his own wants and needs to take care of me. I have no doubt in that.
As I am thinking this, I am stopped right in front of my former nemesis.
Former President Snow.
Before I do anything else, I look for Finnick in the audience behind me.
It doesn't take long, as he is in the front row almost directly behind me. When his green eyes meet my gray, I feel my confidence rise as I know he is giving me thoughts of encouragement. As soon as I break the eye contact, I spot his trademark trident held securely in his hands.
My eyes return to his. He gives a subtle nod to me, reminding me of his promise. Letting me know that he will be there for me.
I know what I need to do.
I return my focus on the monster before me. Everything else fades into the black. Everything seems to slow down around me.
I attach the arrow to the bow.
I pull the arrow back.
I aim.
I release the arrow, sending it to the target.
And they fall.
Before I have a moment to realize who I aimed the arrow at, a trident almost grazes my shoulder as it flies directly into the other target.
I look back to see Finnick giving me his trademark smirk and a little mock salute as I mouth the words 'thank you'.
He looks like he is about to mouth something back, but I don't have the chance to see what he says.
Everything that had faded to the black suddenly began coming back. Everything begins to regain its normal speed. All sound has returned.
"They killed President Coin!"
"This is an act of treason!"
"Arrest them!"
Confusion overwhelms me, as I still cannot say which weapon killed which person. I turn towards the now dead bodies as I see which weapon is in which body.
Only then do I realize the culprit.
I killed Coin.
Finnick killed Snow.
As everyone else has been thrown into chaos, I realize that Finnick knew what I was going to do all along. Even before I did.
I thought that it was a split second decision, but now I realize that it was my goal all along.
In order to save Panem, I had to kill Coin.
My thoughts are interrupted by the soldiers arresting me and leading me away.
They escort me out of the room and out of the chaos.
The last thing I see before the doors shut is Finnick watching me be led away to my possible demise.
