As Niamh Egan entered the confessional she sighed, she hated herself for what she was about to do but she had to tell someone, she had a feeling Assumpta was about to make a terrible mistake.

"Bless me father for I have sinned, well I am about to sin actually, it has been three weeks since my last confession. "

"What is it you are about to do?" He asked registering Niamh's voice.

"Betray a friend, father, my best friend in fact."

Peter's ears pricked up at the mention of Assumpta.

"You see I found out completely by accident, you must understand."

"What have you found out?"

"That she's pregnant." All the blood drained from Peter's face.

"Are you sure?"

"Aye, I found the test in the bin, it was positive alright."

"So how are you about to betray her?"

"I promised to keep what she told me a secret, but I think she is about to make a mistake and she is going to hate me for this but I think if you spoke to her you might be able to make her see sense."

"What did she tell you?"

"She's going to have a termination today, at two o'clock; I found the name of the clinic written down in the kitchen."

Peter felt sick, not only had she lied to him but she was now about to abort his baby.

"She also made me promise not to tell Leo," she confessed.

"And have you?" Peter asked, restraining himself from snapping.

"No, I tried, I rang him on the number 'Sumpta called from when she was with him in Dublin but couldn't get through. Does this make me a bad person father?" Niamh could feel the lump in the back of her throat start to choke her.

"No of course not, you are doing what you believe is right for your friend."

"Will you go to the clinic and try and stop her, or at least check she is absolutely sure she is doing the right thing, I'm not sure that she is convinced herself." She pleaded.

"I don't think a catholic priest going to an abortion clinic will be well received, especially if it involves talking to Assumpta Fitzgerald." What was he doing? He should be running there to stop her.

"Well go undercover then, take off your dog collar and as for Assumpta, it's for her own good, please, you still have time, I'll give you the address."

"Aren't you worried she will stop talking to you?"

"Of course, but as her friend it is my duty to ensure she is doing the right thing."

"You are right, okay I will see what I can do."
