Ambrose Egan was driving back to Ballykissangel when he noticed the van several cars in front of him was going well above the speed limit. He overtook the cars in front and planned to flag the rouge driver down and book them for speeding. His heart sand when he recognised the vehicle's registration plate, it belonged to Assumpta. He had no choice but to pull her over. He turned on his sirens but realised that she couldn't hear him as the bass from her radio spilled out of the van as due to the windows being open.

Garda Egan could only watch helplessly after he slammed on his own brakes. The van in front of him collided into the front larger van which had swerved into the wrong side of the road. Ambrose knew that the vehicle belonged to his father-in-law's workers.

Ambrose jumped out of his car and ran to the crash scene. All three casualties were unconscious, despite the vehicles miraculously being almost unscathed. It was Assumpta who looked in a bad way, as the visible side of her head was covered in blood.

Once he had called for more Garda and the emergency services he telephoned his wife, to let her know what had happened to best friend.
