chapter 4 – a memory and diagon alley

He walked away from the school in disgust. There was no point in attending school if they only taught him what he already knew and the teachers took every opportunity they could to insult him. He fumbled around in the pocket of his green school uniform, bringing out a cigarette and lighter. He puffed on it as he steered himself towards his mum's house. He'd never think of it as home. Home was were he had lived with both of his parents. Home was were he had lived before the divorce. It was were he had been the smartest kid in the city. It was were he lived before they moved here, and most importantly, it was were he learnt to fight.

He approached the door to the small house, that his mum could barely afford after all

of her drinking binges. He found the door unlocked and sighed. Just great. Mum was home. He slipped his shoes off quietly hoping she was asleep so that he could drop his bag off and leave without having to deal with her.

"Make me some coffee." no such luck. He turned round to face her. She was leaning on her elbows in her pyjamas. A bottle of liqueur lay on it's side, what was left of it's contents creating a puddle on the floor and being soaked up by the carpet. He could smell it from here, she was starting to use stronger wine.

"What can't be bothered to get out of bed and do it yourself?"he said half heartedly. He didn't wait for an answer, walking into the kitchen to heat up some water. As much as he complained he did love her.

"You should be in school." her voice called from the other room, not content to leave well enough alone.

"I ditched!" he called back.

"Its not free you know, if your not going to attend quit and get yourself a job." He stopped listening. He always did now a days. He heard the kettle click as it finished boiling but he ignored it. He'd had enough and was already on his way out of the door.

He strolled through town and watched in amusement as shopkeepers hurried to block

doorways in a vain attempt at stopping him from coming in. fools. If he wanted to come in there would be nothing they could do to stop him.

"URAMESHI!" he groaned. There was only one person who would yell his last name out like that. He looked up as kuwabara and his 'gang' approached. They were still wearing there navy blue uniform. Pathetic. They called themselves a gang, yet they still followed the rules.

"kuwabara! Its unusual to see you conscious!" he mocked, enjoying the enraged look that crossed his wannabe rival's face.

"I'm going to mess up your face so bad that not even kittens will look at you." ah yes. He was a fan of cat's wasn't he? Bet he has a pet cat called eikichi. Poor thing having to put up with an oaf like him for an owner.

As usual the fight was over in less than 2 minutes. That was the 550th win against him, 0 loses.

A ball suddenly came flying from somewhere behind him. He caught it with one hand and turned to see kid no more than 5 by the looks of it, running towards him.

"hey kid you shouldn't be playing with a ball so close to the road, its dangerous." he scolded him. A habit that seemed to have come with him when he moved houses. The kid gave me an innocent look before holding his hands out for the ball. He pulled a funny face at him, making him laugh before passing over the ball.

The kid grinned and ran off, and he returned to his original path through the city. He spun around on his heels when he heard a shout further down the street. The kid it seemed hadn't taken his warning to heart and was now following his ball out into the street. This would have been fine if not for the car speeding down the street towards him. Stupid kid. Before his brain had registered the magnitude of what was happening his feet were already starting to move.

Harry's eyes fluttered open as the first ribbons of pale morning sunlight filtered in through dusty curtains, highlighting hovering particles in the air, before coming to rest on the uneven oaken floorboards. He struggled to remember why he was lying on a soft feather mattress instead of the hard cold floor and thread bare blanket he could of sworn he went to sleep on last night.

Then he remembered. He remembered being told that magic is real, that he was a wizard, that his parents had actually been killed by a dark wizard and then being taken away from the Dursleys, but that was just to good to be true. Right?

Now though, looking around at the room the supposed professor had rented for him, he had to face the facts. Last night was real and for the first time in his life, he had no chores to do, no one shouting at him to get up and no one to take away the happiness that was quickly filling his heart.

He gave a contented sigh and snuggled back into the huge pillows, content to just enjoy the peace and quiet of early morning London.

An annoying tingling sensation started in the back of his mind, and Harry couldn't help but feel like he should know what that meant.

"Impossible." yusuke muttered.

"What is?" Harry asked curiously. In all the years he had talked to yusuke he had never once felt him get surprised.

"Its nothing! Really! Like I said it's impossible!" yusuke said quickly, trying to cover up his momentary surprise. He could have sworn he felt... but no that was impossible they were living happily in Japan, and had probably forgotten all about him by now.

The tingling faded to a dull buzz, leaving a melancholy Yusuke and a frustrated Harry in its wake.

Peaceful moment gone, Harry heaved himself out of bed to the clothes he had piled neatly at its foot.

Harry couldn't help but think that it seemed this day would be full of firsts. He was standing in front of a mirror in the door of the wardrobe, noticing for the first time just how skinny his baggy clothes made him look and how his cheap glasses and messy hair made him look like he lived on a street.

Maybe the magic community had a way to fix his eyes or some magical contact lenses? Perhaps they had a long brand of hair gel that could tame his wild locks. One thing was for sure: Harry Potter was getting a new look.

Harry picked up the list that had come with his hogwarts letter. Curiosity getting the better of him, he unfolded it and read out loud:

'I wonder where we're going to get all of this.' Harry thought.

He was disturbed from his musing by a sharp knocking on the door. turning round, he was just in time to see professor mcgonagall step through the door and close it behind her.

"Good morning Mr. potter." She greeted turning round to face him. Despite his best efforts she still wouldn't call him Harry, claiming that teachers and students should always be formal with each other. "I hope your ready to get your school supplies, we're going to head out onto diagon alley straight after breakfast."

"Why so early?" Harry wondered out loud.

"So we can get a head start on the... crowds. After all you won't be the only one in need of school supplies." For some strange reason Harry couldn't shake the feeling she had wanted to say something else but had changed her mind at the last second.

The leaky cauldron was easy to navigate once you knew the layout. The top three floors were for the rooms. Their were 30 rooms on each of the lower floors, and 4 master suites on the top floor plus 1 slightly smaller room for tom the bar tender. The ground floor was the pub part.

It was dimly lit by candles at the tables. The only natural light in the room came from the large windows at the front, which if he was being honest, Harry thought they could do with a good cleaning. There were roughly 10 tables set up on a daily basis with a few more stacked along wall in-case business was really busy. A bar sat opposite the door which was usually where you could find tom.

Breakfast was a simple affair. Harry was to busy watching the chairs unstack themselves and the places being set by small green creatures wearing pillow cases to ponder on why the professor was so insistent that he sat at a table in a shadowy corner away from everyone else while she ordered their food.

Harry was a bit disappointed when he saw what she'd ordered. He'd been expecting... well he wasn't sure what he'd been expecting, but he knew he'd definitely been expecting something less mundane. It didn't change the fact that it was the best meal he'd ever had, it just wasn't what he'd been expecting. A full English breakfast wasn't what he considered magic at all. The beans didn't move, the sausage wasn't a different colour, the bacon still sizzled and the egg tasted like any other egg harry had ever been aloud to eat before, although it was a better quality compared to the small burnt ones the Dursley gave him. Well one at a time. Harry supposed he could try magic food later.

He barely had time to wipe his mouth with one of the napkins before he was being swept out of the back-door of the pub. He was dragged into a courtyard behind the pub. It didn't look anything special. Other than a few trash cans and an invasion of weeds there wasn't anything their at all except for a large brick wall.

"Why are we here professor? I thought we were going shopping for my school supplies!" Harry asked in frustration. He was starting to think this was just an elaborate set up.

Professor mcgonagall made a shushing action before turning to face the wall and pulling out her wall. She tapped it on certain bricks, and to Harry's amazement, the bricks started to move and rotate until there was an archway out onto a long road filled with shops.

"Welcome," She started "To Diagon Alley!"

Early morning shoppers walked along the cobble stone street. Shop owners and assistants stood by open doors advertising stock. Small bearded creatures, half a head shorter than Harry and dressed in scarlet and gold tail coats approached the white marble building at the end of the street.

The shops looked as if they'd been jammed in as tightly as possible whilst still trying to maintain a neat, organised look. Large colourful signs hung from metal poles above the doors proudly proclaiming the store names and their wares.

Nearest the arch way was Potages cauldron shop, cauldrons were stacked in towers against the shops wall. Cauldrons – All Sizes – Copper, Brass, Pewter, Silver – Self-Stirring – Collapsible said the sign above them. It's black and green colour theme matched nicely with the colour theme of the apothecary next door.

The apothecary had no sign, rather it had large peeling letters in varying shades of turquoise pasted to the wall just above the door and windows. A plump woman outside was shaking her head, saying, "Dragon liver, seventeen sickles an ounce, they're mad,"

Opposite them was Eeylops owl emporium and magical menagerie next to which was quality Quidditch supplies, its windows already surrounded by children with their noses pressed against the glass despite the early hour. As they approached Harry heard one of their number exclaim,

"look, the new nimbus two thousand – fastest ever -"

A large picture of an ice-cream cone beneath the golden writing claiming the shop as 'florean fortescues ice-scream parlour.' A second sign hung underneath from iron chains. 'chocolate, mint, liver and cod, if it's a flavour we have it.' Harry wondered if they really did fish flavour ice-cream but decided that he would find out later.

Opposite the ice-cream parlour was 'flourish and blotts' which, if the stack of books painted underneath the writing was anything to go by, was a book store.

Next to flourish and blotts was a shop with a large picture of an eye. 'Mr. Gamji's eye wear boutique' was written above in spidery faded bronze writing.

"What a coincidence! Weren't you saying you wanted to do something about your glasses! We can pop back here later once we ditch the professor!" exclaimed yusuke suddenly much happier. Harry was distracted from lecturing him about ditching teachers by professor mcgonagall who had obviously decided that he'd looked at shops for long enough and dragged him away from the steadily filling street

up a flight of white washed stairs and to the burnished bronze doors of the impressive white building he's seen the small bearded things disappear into earlier.

He stared at one of the creatures who was standing next to the doors they were approaching. Professor mcgonagall followed his gaze to the clever looking short before addressing Harry,

"That Mr. Potter is a goblin. They run Gringotts, the wizarding bank," She nodded her head towards the white building, "And you would be wise not to insult one." She said looking down at him sternly.

The goblin bowed at them as they entered the building, and found themselves facing a second pair of doors, silver this time, with words engraved upon them:

Enter, stranger, but take heed

Of what awaits the sin of greed,

For those who take, but do not earn

Must pay most dearly in their turn,

So if you seek beneath our floors,

A treasure that was never yours,

Thief, you have been warned, beware

Of finding more than treasure there.

A pair of goblins bowed them through the doors and they were in a vast hall. Goblins milled about, taking books and papers from 1 counter to another and showing other humans through side doors. The goblin they approached was weighing and examining rubys of different shapes and sizes.

They waited patiently until the goblin finally peered up from his work at mcgonagall.

"How can I help you?" He drawled, his lip scrunched up in a sneer.

"Mr. potter here would like to make a withdrawal from his vault." She said.

"And does Mr. Potter have his key?" The goblin asked turning his calculating gaze to Harry. Professor mcgonagall reached into the same pocket her wand was held in, and drew out a small golden key. She handed it to the Goblin to inspect, who turned it over several times and held it close to one eye before giving a stiff nod.

"All seems in order. Is that all?"

"No, I have a letter here from Dumbledore about the object in vault seven hundred and thirteen." She held out the letter in question to him and exchanged it for the vault key, which she in turn handed over to Harry. The goblin opened the envelope delicately with nimble, skilled fingers, before looking carefully at the contents of the parchment inside.

"Very well,"He said finally, "I will have Griphook take you to the vaults."

A goblin ambled forwards from the door he had been standing by.

"Follow me please." He said sharply, before heading back to the door he had come through without bothering to check whether they were following or not. Harry had to break into a jog to catch up to the brisk pace the two adults were setting despite the fact that one of them had shorter legs than him.

They passed through the door into a narrow stone passage lit by torches. There were tracks leading down the tunnel, set upon which was a cart, similar to the ones miners used except this one had seats and doors.

Harry followed the example of professor mcgonagall and sat on one of the seats. No sooner than he did so, the cart started speeding down the tunnel. He tried to keep track of all the turns they took; left, left, right, middle fork, left again, right, but he quickly lost track. The rattling cart seemed to know its own way because griphook wasn't steering.

Harry caught sight of other carts occasionally whenever they went around a turn. Down one passage he could have sworn he caught sight of a large beast covered in scales, large leathery wings and sending out more flames than a flame-thrower. However he blinked and they sped around another corner leaving him to wonder if he really saw that.

The cart reminded Harry of the roller coasters he'd caught sight of on TV, he imagined if he were to ride one it would feel a lot like this. Harry's eyes stung as the cold air rushed past them, but he kept them wide open. They plunged even deeper, passing an underground lake where huge stalactites and stalagmites grew from ceiling to floor.

When the cart finally slowed they were in front of a large golden door. Griphook took Harry's key and inserted it into the small lock. The door opened with a creak that wouldn't be out of place in a horror movie, and a billowing cloud of green smoke poured out from within the vault. It cleared to reveal stacks of bronze coins, piles of silver and heaps of gold.

Harry approached a pile and picked up the top coin to examine it. It gleamed in the light, making a golden spot dance around the room. On one side a picture of Gringotts was engraved in the precious metal, around which were a series of Latin numbers and words, the other side held a picture of a sneering goblins face.

"The gold coins are galleons, seventeen sickles to a galleon," Professor mcgonagall said pointing out the different coins. "twenty-nine knuts to a sickle." Harry nodded showing that he understood before gathering up some of each and placing them in the bag offered to him.

"This is of course just the trust vault, you will have access to the main vault when you come of age." Professor mcgonagall said noticing how he had only taken as much as he thought he needed.

"This is just the trust vault! We're rich. New clothes! New haircut and we can finally do something about these glasses!" rambled Yusuke completely ecstatic.

They headed back to the cart, where Harry sat in a state of shock and was only dimly aware that they were moving. Only shaking himself out of it when Griphook announced they had arrived at vault seven hundred and thirteen.

This vault was less impressive than the Harry's. He frowned when he noticed there wasn't a way to open it.

Vault seven hundred and thirteen had no key hole.

"Stand back," said Griphook importantly. He stroked the door gently with one of his long fingers and it simply melted away.

"If anyone but a Gringotts goblin tried that, they'd be sucked through the door and trapped in there," said Griphook.

"How often do you check to see if anyone's inside?" Harry asked.

"About once every ten years," said Griphook, with a rather nasty grin.

Harry leaned forward eagerly trying to see what was inside, wondering what could possibly need to be kept in such high security, expecting to see valuable jewels at least. Thus he was disappointed to see only a small grubby package. The professor pocketed it before steering him back to the cart.

One wild cart ride later, and harry found himself blinking in the sunlight outside of Gringotts. They headed to madam malkins first as it was closest.

Madam malkins was a squat, smiling witch dressed all in mauve.

"Hogwarts, dear?" she said, when harry started to speak. "Got the lot here – another first years being fitted up now, in fact."

In the back of the shop, a girl with frizzy brown hair was standing on a foot stall while a second witch pinned up her black robes.

"Hello, I'm Hermione Granger. And you are?" she asked in a haughty voice. By the looks of her, she was the type of person who held authority figures in the up most respect, believed in doing things by the book and thought studies were more important than being social. Basically an all round goody-two-shoes. Realising he hadn't answered yet and that she was starting to stare at him, he hastily said;

"My names Harry potter." Apparently that was the wrong thing to say because everyone who was within hearing distance suddenly shut up and stared at him. Then they suddenly broke out into excited whispers and rushed to shake his hand. Madam malkins who had been about to let another witch fit him, suddenly changed her mind and started to fit him personally. All of this sudden friendly behaviour confused Harry who had suddenly gone from being just another first year student to the most interesting person in the store.

"What did I say?" he asked yusuke in confusion as he shook yet another hand.

"You introduced yourself. I can only guess that in this world your famous for still being alive. O bāchan did say your parents were killed by a dark wizard. He probably tried to kill you to. Like I said earlier though, we'll ditch her and do some shopping by ourselves. There has to be a book on it."

Harry didn't comment on yusuke's use of Japanese words. He knew he didn't mean to. He just slipped up occasionally.

The girl, Hermione, was looking at him in amazement now. She leant over so that she could whisper in his ear.

"Why are the all so eager to meet you? All you did was introduce yourself." He sent her a side ways glance and shrugged.

They stood there in relative silence for a few minutes as people continued to shake Harry's hand and introduce themselves. Finally after what seemed like hours but was probably a few minutes, mcgonagall had enough of the commotion.

"Leave the poor boy alone! I'm sure you have better things to do than crowd around him. You can talk to him at a later date if he agrees." She snapped and that was the end of it. They stopped shaking his hand, made their purchases and left the store.

Harry looking back to Hermione.

"So who are you hear with?" He asked her in an attempt to break the uneasy silence that had replaced the chatter of wizards and witches introducing themselves. Hermione smiled.

"My parents who are muggles, and professor flitwick are future charms teacher. What about you?" Deciding that it was better than standing there in silence for who knows how long, Harry introduced her to mcgonagall. They asked each other questions such as where did they come from, what were their lives like so far and what accidental magic had they done. When Madam malkins finished fitting him he was sad to say goodbye but to excited to see the other shops to dwell on it.

They visited the book shop Harry had seen earlier next. The shelves were stacked to the ceiling with books as large as paving stones bound in leather; books the size of postage stamps in covers of silk; books of peculiar symbols and a few books with nothing in them at all.

Along with his school books, Harry added several extra to his basket. Among them were:

A beginners guide to alchemy by Nicholas flamel

A hundred and one pranks; annoy your family, tease your friends and get revenge on your enemies by the marauders(brought upon yusuke's insistence)

two way journals

pure blood cultures, expectations and rituals by alight loveday

greatest wizards of the 21st century by bathilda bagshot

the biggest inventions of this millennium by Qauxirx Troencyn

Professor mcgonagall literally had to drag him out so he would still have enough money left for the rest of his school supplies. For some reason she wouldn't let him buy a solid gold cauldron, insisting that the list said pewter but they got a nice set of scales for weighing potions ingredients and a collapsible brass telescope. Then they visited the apothecary's, which was fascinating enough to make up for its horrible smell, a mixture of bad eggs and rotted cabbage. Barrels of slimy stuff stood on the floor, jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders lined the walls, bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hung from the ceiling.

Outside of the apothecary mcgonagall cast a quick tempus, which harry was quite pleased to remember meant time in Latin.

"Mr. Potter do you think you will be okay getting your wand from olivanders by yourself? I have an important meeting back at hogwarts." upon receiving a nod from harry she gave him a few last minute details such as ways to get to kings cross and how to get onto the platform.

Harry watched as she waved her wand once more and then disappeared with a sharp crack. He grinned. He entered olivanders deciding to sort out the matter of getting his wand before he dealt with his glasses. He could get a pet after that. He'd get clothes tomorrow from a muggle store outside of the alley.

Olivanders was without the shabbiest and most mysterious store on the street. 'olivanders: makers of fine wands since 382bc' was written in faded writing over the door, the red paint of which was peeling off in flakes. The front windows were filthy with dust, and the ornamental wands in the window were connected to their matching boxes by thick spider webs.

A bell chimed somewhere in the shop as he entered. Boxes, sorted by the type of wood and core used, were stacked along the walls and behind the counter and if Harry leaned to the side a bit he could see more wands stacked in the corridors leading away from it.

"Hello?" He called.

"ah! Mr. potter, I wondered when I would be seeing you." Harry whirled around to face the oldest man he had ever seen. Misty blue eyes peered unblinking at him from behind metal spectacles. Frizzy white hair adorned his head giving him a mad scientist look and a scruffy Victorian style suit clung to his thin form.

"Hold out your wand arm." He instructed stopping harry from making further observations. Harry looked up in confusion.

"Which arm do you write with?" He explained patiently.

"Both of them. I'm ambidextrous." Harry said truthfully. Whilst he was right handed naturally, yusuke had been left handed, so he knew how to use both.

"How curious. A wand for each arm then. Hold them out please." He did so and watched as a tape measure floated around the measuring from elbow to wrist, shoulder to shoulder, shoulder to elbow. He stopped it though as it went to measure the width of his nostrils.

Mr Ollivander snapped his fingers and it fell limply to the floor. Whilst it had been measuring he had been happily browsing the many stacks of boxes and had pulled out a selection.

"Try this one in your right hand please. Unicorn tail hairs and oak wood. 12 inches. Extra firm good for charm work." He said holding out the wand. Harry took it in the right arm.

"Give it a wave then." Mr Ollivander said when harry just stood there. He did as instructed and quickly put it on the counter when a nearby vase broke.

"It was cracked anyway!" he said guiltily.

"lets try this one. Dragon heartstrings. Elm. 14 inches. Nice and swishy. Great for transfiguration." Harry took the wand and flicked it away from him. Wary after what happened last time. Nothing happened but it was quickly snatched away from him anyway.

This went on and on until the pile of tried wands was higher than harry, and yet strangely the more wands he tried the happier the old wizard became. Finally they found a wand that liked him.

"phoenix feather. Holly wood. 13 and a half inches. Flexible good for charms. How curious." pondered Mr Ollivander. So far curious seemed to be his favourite word.

"what's curious?" harry asked distractedly as he watched the blue phoenix that had erupted from his wand.

"it just so happens that the phoenix who gave a feather for that wand, gave another feather. Just one other. It's curious that you should be destined for this wand when its brother gave you that scar. It seems we can expect great things from you." he replied mysteriously. Mr Ollivander vanished into the other room seconds later to find another wand for him, leaving harry to stare dumbly at his new wand.

The dull tingling that had started this morning and had yet to fade, grew in intensity, becoming an annoying throb in the back of his mind. He felt himself suddenly being shoved back as yusuke took control of his body.

"Yusuke, what are you doing?" he asked in a panic yusuke had only ever done this once before, when uncle Vernon had beaten him to near unconsciousness. Yusuke had sent Vernon to hospital for a week and when he finally got back he was never beaten again.

"shush!" Yusuke snapped. He twirled on the spot, concentrating on keeping his eyes green. He looked out of the window, the dust doing little to handicap his spirit energy fused sight. He let his eyes trail over the faces roaming the streets. No, no, not there either, no. There!

A group of about 5 children were walking towards olivanders. An excited mini blue penguin was flying happily around their heads. A short annoyed looking boy near the back of the group would slap it occasionally when it got to close. A red head that seemed unsteady on his feet like he wasn't used to walking had a large grin pasted on his face as he tried to get his friends to laugh. A serious looking boy with silver and green hair stood next to him waving off the red head as he tried to discuss some serious matter with another red head and a carrot top.

The bell tinkled again as the door was pushed open and the group entered.

"It won't be that easy kuwabara. For all we know he might be blond with blue eyes now. We could be there for 3 years before we see so much of a hint of him." the second red head was saying.

"But why would he want to hide himself that long?" asked the 'kuwabara'. Or at least that was what he was called if the red head was to believed.

"well considering that when he last saw us we all looked at least fourteen, and we know are all eleven he'll probably want to make sure we are who he thinks we are before he does anything."

'it is them!' yusuke thought in amazement. But why did they look like eleven year old?

"JUST ONE SECOND!" Called Mr Ollivander called from the other room making everyone else in the shop jump and whirl around to face it. Yusuke bit his lip and hoped that him being in control wouldn't mess with the wand matching, but he wasn't going to risk harry ruining things with them.

"lets try this one first for your left arm shall we Mr potter? Phoenix feather, beach wood, 11 inches." he offered the wand to yusuke who took it cautiously not sure how it would react with him in control of Harry's body. He flicked in a random direction and angry red sparks erupted from the end of it.

"no? Lets try this one dementor bone and ebony. Good for charms." he offered a pitch black wand to yusuke, who took it gingerly. He dropped it only seconds later as it burnt his hand.

"How about this the talon of a spirit beast and wood from a death tree. Resilient. Good for defence." out of the corner of his eye, yusuke saw the group suddenly paying more attention. He took it carefully in case it tried to burn him again. He flicked it and suddenly a friendly warmth flowed through his body, the vase he broke earlier fixed itself, the wands he'd tried put themselves away, the candles in the lamps flickered and a phoenix identical to the one he got out of his other wand flew around the room, the only difference being that whereas the first phoenix was made of pure energy this one was made of hot blue flames that created dancing shadows on the walls of the cramped store. It nodded at him before fading out of existence.

"well done Mr. potter. You must have had a spirit beast at some point or that wand would not have accepted it. If you wouldn't mind waiting whilst I serve my other customers, we can settle the payment. Yusuke nodded eager to see what the others got for wands.

He wasn't surprised when the small mean looking member of the group got the ebony wand that burnt him earlier. He watched as the red head who had been talking to kuwabara was equipped with a silver birch wand with a fox hair core. He snorted when kuwabara whined about his wand (beech tree and unicorn hair) being made out of common materials. He grinned when a tornado burst out of the nimbus puff and pine wand that the other red head tried. He even managed to smile despite his teeth chattering when the Arctic wolf claw and fur tree wand sent out a miniature blizzard. Yusuke watched as the group left, only to stop about two shops away and turn to face the door to the shop obviously planning on talking to him. Good they'd listed him as a potential reincarnation.

He paid for his wands and two holsters so that he had some place to keep them, before copying the group and leaving the shop. They were leaning against the wall of the ice-cream parlour when he finally reached them.

"That was an interesting display you put on whilst choosing a wand." It was a red head who spoke first. Green eyes met green, and for a second yusuke felt like letting his eyes resume their natural colour, to let them know it was him. But in the end he decided to wait until he found out why they had tried to find him before now.

"I could say the same about you, those were some interesting wand choices. The names harry by the way." yusuke said remembering that it was Harry's body.

"I'm kurama, the boy next to him is kuwabara, the other red head is jin. The boy with silver hair is Toya, and the short boy next to him is hiei." said the red head, pointing out the members of the group as he in introduced them.

"Puu!" The blue penguin called out, flying in excited circles. Yusuke laughed at the familiar antics

"Isn't that a spirit beast?"He asked pretending to be clueless. He noticed the group exchanging what they obviously thought were secret hopeful glances. Kurama nodded.

"How did you know?" he asked.

"Does it really matter? What shop's have you got left to visit?" he replied changing the subject.

"Just the magical menagerie." kurama said though he had obviously noticed the sudden change of subject.

"I've the same, although I was planning on visiting Mr gamji's as well." yusuke said with a smile. He watched as kurama whispered something to the others who all appeared to agree with whatever he had said.

"we may as well go together then." kurama stated when he turned back around to yusuke. He nodded happily.

"Sounds good."

There wasn't much room inside of the magical menagerie. Every inch of wall was hidden by cages. It was smelly and very noisy because the occupants of these cages were all squeaking, squawking, jabbering or hissing. They separated once they were inside. Kuwabara and kurama went to look at the cats whilst the other looked at the birds. Yusuke found himself being drawn to a shadowed corner. Here large glass tanks replaced the cages. Large and colourful snakes hissed menacingly at him from within the confines of their prisons. Whatever had happened in the zoo came into play again and yusuke found himself listening to an impressive string of curse words. He moved on hurriedly after they started to list what they would to the 'stick waving two-legged's' once the got out of the tanks.

Once he passed the serpents, the corner was relatively quiet and empty. The only thing yusuke could make out was a lone wicker basket sitting in the corner. He drew closer, curious as to why it was so far away from the other animals. Peaking over the top, yusuke gasped.

Black ears twitched on a tiny head whilst ruby eyes blinked sleepily up at him. An unhealthily thin body coated in matted black fur shivered in the cold air of the dark corner and two ebony tails with silver tips were pulled closer in an attempt to conserve warmth, nearly hiding the tiny paws at the end of its shaky legs.

Yusuke's heart went out to the small kit, having lived through two life times worth of similar conditions. He carefully lifted basket being careful not to bump around the timid creature it held.

He waited patiently whilst the flustered looking witch behind the counter finished giving advice on the care of a double-headed puppy. When the customer in front of him finally left, yusuke placed the basket in front of the witch carefully. The witch jumped when she saw what was inside. She obviously hadn't been expecting anyone to but it.

"Are you sure you want this? Its extremely dangerous when it gets angry." she said hastily. Strange usually a shop keeper would do anything to sell stock they didn't want. Oh well.

"A lot like me then." yusuke said in a dangerously quiet voice, fixing the flustered shop owner with a deadly stare.

"er right. Erm." floundered she floundered. "fine take it, on the house, just keep it away from me!" she finally exclaimed. Yusuke smiled and took the care manual the woman was holding out.

He turned around and saw the others waiting for him out side. Kurama was holding a Siamese with white fur and pale purple highlights. Kuwabara was gingerly trying to remove a smoky Gray Siberian kitten. Hiei and Toya by the looks of had both decided to go without pets but jin was happily beaming next to an excited looking elf owl. They smiled at him, well all except for hiei anyway, but yusuke was still to angry and the shop keeper to give them anything in return over than a sharp nod.

Their smiles faltered when they noticed his sour mood.

"What's wrong?" kurama asked, trying to look in the carrier basket yusuke had exchanged with the wicker lidless one.

"The shop owner doesn't like animals that retaliate when they get angry." he replied trying to keep the growl out of his voice.

"oh, right." kurama said uncomfortably.

"Did ya not say ya wanted to visit Mr Gamji's?" Jin asked in a heavily accented voice in an attempt to lighten the mood. Yusuke nodded stiffly and started to head in the direction of the eye shop. The others followed him quietly sensing that he wasn't in the mood to talk.

Mr Gamji's eye boutique was painted in bright greens, blues, pinks and yellows creating optical illusions on every solid surface and even a few that weren't. Glass display cases were scattered around the room, filled with glasses and contact lenses with different magical features. Yusuke ignored the glasses and walked straight over to the contacts. A sign positioned above the display cases listed a few of the many types of lenses he could get.

Let your friends know exactly what mood your in with colour change contact lenses.

See through solid surfaces with x-ray contacts.

Know exactly where your friends are with these tracking lenses

pretend to be a werewolf with these amber coloured contacts

be the most colourful person in the building with Mr gamji's patented rainbow lenses

It was amazing how many types of contact lenses people had come up with.

"How can I help you?" asked some one to his left, yusuke jumped and turned to face him with a scowl. That was the second time today someone had managed to sneak up on him.

Mr Gamji or at least that's who he assumed the man was, had a tall lean figure, smooth brown curls and a moustache that he had a habit of twirling in his fingers.

"ah. I see! A potter. I wondered when I would have a visit from one. Their bad eye sight is legendary you see. Its a shame we only opened after your father died or we could have done something for him, but lets not dwell in the past shall we?" he said in a friendly tone. He walked over to a silver cabinet and pulled out a small case.

"lets try these ones." he held out two emerald lenses that matched his eyes. Yusuke took them and carefully slid them into his eyes. He smiled slightly as his vision cleared.

"Follow me if you please, so that we may make any minor adjustments needed. I'm sure you friends won't mind waiting." the minor adjustments it turned out was actually one big adjustment. Apparently the magic world had found a way to fuse contacts to your eyes so that your vision may as well have been fixed and you didn't have to worry about the contacts slipping out whilst you were bent over.

3 hours later, after he was sure the young kit was clean and fed, and that he had an agreement with the others to meet them on the train, yusuke sat down on one of the comfy beds in the leaky cauldron and let harry have control.

"just to let you know in advance i'm taking over when we're around them." he said.

"I know. You made that clear when you agreed to meet your new friends on the train." harry snapped.

They were so busy arguing that neither of them noticed one of their eyes going slightly darker.

An: woo! Finally finished. I think this is the longest chapter I've ever done. It took a grand total of 2 and half days so I hope you like it. Don't forget to comment. I want to know why you guys think one of their eyes has started to change colour.
