A loud thud was heard behind her and she frantically turns around to see the door she had come in earlier had close. She hurries back towards the door and tries to budge it open but it wouldn't. She pounds on the door and speaks loud enough for someone to hear.
"Hello?" She pounds again. "Is anybody out there?"
No response. She tries to shake the door but still it wouldn't open. She gives out a sigh and steps back a few steps. She inhales and exhales twice before running towards the door and using her body to break it down. It didn't even budge and she huffs out in defeat.
"Don't even bother."
She immediately turns and sees that no one was behind her. The voice sounded close to her though. She took cautious steps forward and searches for any signs of someone being in the room with her. The room was fairly lit but at the corners seems to be too dark for someone to be there. That's what she hopes.
"Who's there?"
Again, no response but she can feel a pair of eyes watching her. She wouldn't admit it but she was getting goose bumps from this. She searches the room again but finds no one. She might be hearing things due from the exhaustion earlier. She was about to dismiss the whole thing but she hears the voice again.
"Asami Sato, where is your Avatar?"
A man was using the wall to hold himself steady. He looks back and sees a trail of blood that leads straight up to him. He puts a hand on his chest and brings it back to his line of vision. His hands were covered with a red sticky substance. He curses under his breath as he continues walking down the hall slowly leaving bloody red handprints on the wall.
"I don't know how long I can keep going on like this…"
He stops to take a bit of breath and looks down on his bleeding chest. He could feel himself getting weaker as blood continues to seep out from his wound. He needs to find a way to close it before he dies from blood lost.
A loud thud immediately gets him to look up to the direction where the sound had come from. He then hears a faint pounding and a voice but he couldn't quite catch what the voice was saying. He hesitates at first but then later decides to continue on down the hallway.
"What do I have left to lose?"
He was about to make a turn on where he hears a few voices but was pulled right back immediately and a hand was placed over his mouth to keep him from either screaming or yelling. His eyes turn into shock as the woman ushers him to stay quiet.
"Joe, ssssh."
Asami takes on a defensive stance, thinking an attack would progress on her. She was right about the attack but she didn't act fast enough and she was now thrown across the room. She brings her back towards the wall and helps herself up. She doesn't dare to take a step forward though.
The person across her, however, doesn't seem to be in a hurry and just stood at the tip where the light doesn't hit. Asami couldn't help but look around the area checking if this person had friends or not. Asami hopes for the latter.
As if reading her thoughts, the figure answers her and she was now sure that it was a woman speaking to her.
"Don't worry. It's just you and me." She starts to move forward but stops right under the light. "No one's going to interfere this time."
She wasn't sure whose voice it was at first but all her doubts were removed when the person in front of her came underneath the beam of the light, she immediately knew who this woman was. Asami felt anger rising in her. She was clutching both her fists as she spoke through her gritted teeth.
"Rylai…"
She spat the name as if it were venom. This, however, amused the woman in front of her because the moment she said her name, a certain glow was seen in her eyes. If those eyes didn't give it away, her smirk certainly would have.
The woman holds Joe down to the wall and takes a cautious look around the corner. There were a few men stationed at the end of the hall. It didn't look like they notice their presence. A man catches her eyes though and she couldn't help but curse and unintentionally tighten the grip she had on Joe.
"Uh…Korra…you're hurting me."
Korra turns around and gave him a questioning look. Joe motions the grip she had on his chest and she quickly removes her hand off from him. He exhales and Korra gives him an apologetic look for the pain she had caused him.
"I'm sorry, Joe."
Joe looks at those azure eyes staring right at him. He could feel the weight on those words as Korra said it. If her voice didn't give it away, her eyes do. Her eyes were filled with sorrow, regret and guilt. There was a bit of anger in them too but he wasn't sure about it.
"Don't worry about it." Joe manages to say. "I'm glad you're back."
Korra gives him an appreciative look and a small smile. She then looks down at his chest and sees his wound. She tries to lift up his shirt to avoid any pain he might cause him as she checks it.
"We need to close the wound."
"Tell me something I don't know."
Joe manages out a small chuckle but soon regrets it as he winces in pain. He felt his knees go weak and was tumbling down to the ground but Korra catches him before he lands painfully. She carefully takes one of his arms over her shoulder to help him get up on his feet.
"Easy there."
"I'm…I'm not feeling so good, Cap."
Joe manages to slur out. He was getting a bit dizzy from all the blood he was losing. He could barely keep his eyes open now. Korra gives him a small slap to the face to get him to wake up.
"Hold on, I know where we need to go."
Korra made sure that Joe was leaning all his weight on her as she guided them back to where Joe had walked through earlier. She manages to bring them both into a room. Joe looks up and manages to see that Korra had brought them into a kitchen.
Korra slowly lets Joe lie down on the ground as she begins to search for something in the cabinets. Joe hearing the sounds Korra was making, he sloppily looks to the direction where she was.
"Now's not the time to be looking for food, Korra…"
Joe could hear her chuckling and he couldn't help but smile as well. He turns back to look at the ceiling and he begins to close his eyes for a while and he hears Korra speaking to him.
"Times like these, I wish I could just bend fire from the palm of my hands."
"If it were only possible…" Joe whispers out.
Joe could still hear her rustling from the counters, opening and closing cabinets with force. He was about to drift off when Korra's yell got him to open his eyes again.
"AHA!"
Korra was now heating her dagger at the tip of the flame she had produced after successfully finding the match sticks. She makes sure the dagger turns bright red before flipping it over to the other side. As soon as it was finish, she went to kneel beside a sleepy Joe.
"You better keep your mouth shut, Joe." Korra starts as she lifts his shirt up again. "This is going to hurt like hell."
"…What is goi-?"
A pair came running down the hallways and turning to whatever corners they felt like would keep them safe and out of harm. They pushed themselves back into a corner and heard a bunch of footsteps passing by them hurriedly. They could hear voices yelling in the distance.
"Here, they went down here!"
"They couldn't have gotten far!"
"Get them!"
They waited for a while and when they were sure they're pursuers had all gone down the hallway, one of the pair peeked out from the corner to confirm that they weren't being followed anymore. He nods at his companion, signaling that the coast was clear and they both let out a sigh of relief.
"That was close. You think we've lost them?"
"For now, we better keep moving if we want it to stay that way."
"JESUS CHRIST, KORRA!"
Korra had placed the heated the dagger over his open wound to get it to close and it sizzle a bit. Joe was struggling to get the dagger off of him but Korra would have none of it. After a few moments, she gets the dagger off of him and he shoots up into a sitting position, panting.
"Hey, I warned you."
Joe ends up glaring at Korra in which she just shrugs the glare off. She suddenly stands up and heads towards the door and peeks out a bit. She closes the door back quickly but cautiously.
"What's going on?" Joe asks, sensing a bit of tension coming out from his companion.
"We've got company."
"How many?" No response. "Korra? How many?"
Korra, however, ignores his question and begins to hide herself in the shadows. This leaves Joe dumbfounded and he tries his best to get himself to stand but couldn't. Before he could try again, the door opens to reveal three hooded soldiers pointing their guns right at him.
"Hands up." One of the men says.
Joe grunts out in frustration and one of the men pokes the barrel of his gun at the back of Joe's head. Joe sighed out and began to raise his hands slowly.
"Who were you talking to?" One of the men asks.
"What're you ta-"
Joe starts but was cut off immediately when Korra suddenly came out from the shadows and threw three daggers simultaneously, hitting all her targets. It looked like time went still for Joe as all three men fell into the ground with one thud.
"Did you…Did you just use me as bait?"
"Mmm."
Joe was in disbelief. Korra helps him up and he just ends up glaring at the back of Korra while she searches weapons from the three soldiers. Korra could sense the glare she's getting from the back of her head and she sighs.
"There wasn't enough time for me to get you up then get you and myself hidden."
"You could've at least told me about it." Joe pouted.
"Like I said, there wasn't enough time."
Joe just shakes his head and gives Korra a smile.
"Like I said earlier, it's good to have you back, Korra."
Korra stops searching and turns to look at Joe in the eye. She suddenly stared down at her feet as she spoke.
"Listen, Joe…About Joyce and the others…I'm so-"
"No, don't even start. I'm all behind that. I'm just glad you're back with us."
Korra couldn't help but give him a hug and he squeezes her back in return.
"Come on." Korra hands him a rifle and rushes out the door. "Those were the guards earlier and they seemed to be pretty keen to make sure no one's going through that door."
The pair had been wandering down the hallways aimlessly. They've run into guards a few times but were able to subdue them without any problems. They stopped in the middle of a hallway when three pathways were presented in front of them. One of them yells out in frustration which got it echoing in all three directions.
"Great, I bet a bunch of those Red Lotus soldiers are on their way here right now."
"If you haven't notice but they're the only ones we've been finding lately, Kai!"
"It's not my fault we lost her." Kai simply says.
"We? What do you mean by we?" Wei turns to glare at him and points an accusing finger at his companion. "You…You're supposed to know these areas better than me!"
"Hey! You should too and you've been here longer than I have." Kai huffs out at him. "And that doesn't even mean I know where Asami would run off to!"
They argue like this for a while and they hadn't even notice that two soldiers were sneaking their way up to them due to the heat of their argument. Both soldiers were readying their stealth arrows and were about to fire at both backs of the arguing pair.
Kai, however, notices his shoelace was untied and crouches down to fix the problem. In a split second, Wei notices the soldier behind Kai and he had already fired the arrow. Wei was able to evade the arrow due to his quick reaction time.
Both arrows ended up hitting the opposing soldiers in the chest and they fall down with a thud. Wei turns around behind him and only notices now that there was a soldier behind him as well. After Kai finishes tying up his shoelace, he gets up.
"So, what do you say?"
"What?" Wei looks at him dumbfounded.
"You…"
Kai doesn't continue his sentence and sighs in defeat. He turns around to proceed into the left pathway when he stops and notices the dead soldier lying on the ground with an arrow on his chest. He turns around to speak to Wei but then notices another soldier at the right pathway with the same predicament. He looks back and forth from the dead bodies then to Wei's face.
"Wait, what?"
"Exactly."
"Asami Sato, only daughter of the now deceased Hiroshi and Yasuko Sato."
Rylai slowly walks up in front of Asami as she spoke about her.
"Former girlfriend of the Avatar."
"Still girlfriend."
Asami couldn't help but hiss at the woman. She knows she was trying to get Asami to lash out but she was having trouble keeping her emotions checked in. Rylai raises an eyebrow at her and stops a few meters in front of a clearly fuming Asami.
"Oh? Do I sense a hint of jealousy?" Rylai says with amusement.
Rylai couldn't help but give out a sly grin at the woman in front of her and that was it. That was all Asami could take. She exploded.
Asami swings a cross to her opponent who steps back immediately. Rylai then gives out her own cross and it hits Asami right in her ribs. Asami yells out but immediately throws a blind swing at her opponent who manipulated the attack to stop and threw out another cross that hit Asami's cheek.
Asami stumbles back a bit but throws another blind swing in which Rylai ducks in time to avoid it and was now behind Asami. Asami crosses her again but this time, Rylai catches it and throws a jab right into Asami's face.
This fight wasn't going as Asami planned. Her emotions were getting the best of her and she knew better than to fight angry. Angry means your opponent could read your movements better. She calms herself down a bit and was able to throw a jab right at Rylai's stomach. It wasn't much but it was a progress but Rylai had other plans.
She holds Asami's arm in place and gives a sly smile at her opponent. The blond haired woman immediately flips raven haired over her. Asami falls flat on her back and pants in defeat. Rylai stands over the woman lying on the ground.
Asami struggles to get up but Rylai pushes her back down with the heel of her foot. She leaves her foot on top of the lying woman's chest to avoid her from getting up. She begins to pull out a dagger out from her jacket and twirls it over in her hand. She smirks at the woman below her.
"Asami Sato, it's a pleasure eliminating the last of your line."
Two pair of eyes was looking down on an unconscious woman. One of them bends down and shakes the woman slowly. The woman stirs a bit and mumbles something under her breathe. The person shakes her again but nothing.
The person bending down scratches the back of her head and lets out a sigh. She turns to look at her companion. Her companion rolls her eyes and bends down, she softly whispers into the unconscious woman's ear which earned them a small smile.
Out of nowhere, a hard slap was thrown at the unaware woman. This got her to wake up because now she was staggering to get up and was frantically looking around at her environment.
"Nice to have you back in the land of the living, Lin."
The pair chuckled but Lin, however, was not amused. She glared at the women in front of her.
"I didn't die, Kya." Lin rolled her eyes. "And who the hell slap me?"
Lin rubs the side of her face and checks her palm to see if it was actually bleeding.
"I did, Su tried to wake you up but it didn't work out to well so I had to do something."
Kya shrugged and Su tried to contain the smile that was attempting to escape. Lin lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding and begins to stretch her arms and legs.
"Where's everybody?" Lin asks her sister.
"No clue." Su sighs. "We were in pursuit on Amon and the others stayed behind to give us an opportunity."
"So, where is Amon?" Lin asks looking around.
"He got away." Kya answers. "But I know where he is."
"What?" Lin and Su exclaimed at the same time.
"I got a tracker on him earlier."
Korra runs up to the door and tries to open it. No budge. She tries turning the knob and it turns but the door doesn't open. She tries knocking the door back with her shoulder. No budge. She tries the door knob again and grunts out in frustration.
Joe walks up beside her and she begins pacing back and forth in front of the door.
"Have you tried open sesame?" Joe asks with a smile.
Korra stops and turns to glare at her friend and he holds his hand up in the air in defeat. He begins to inspect the door thoroughly, checking the bolts and screws on it while talking to Korra.
"So, who do you think is in the other side of the door?"
"I have a hunch…" Korra stops pacing. "Let's hope I'm wrong."
"Do you think it's Asami in there?"
Korra, however, was no longer listening to him. She had notice a vent nearby and saw that it had no screws on it. She remembered pulling out a gas grenade earlier from one of the guards earlier. If things didn't go their way, they would have gassed the people in it.
She stretches her arms and legs for a bit and then reaches into the vent and pulled herself up. She begins to crawl and make her way to the other end of vent. She reaches it after a few seconds and lets herself down to the ground.
She looks up to see two women going at it. She narrows her eyes and she notices it was Asami and Rylai and things weren't looking good for Asami. Rylai had her pinned down and she noticed Rylai pulled out a dagger out from her jacket.
Korra quickly grab her own dagger and immediately threw it to their direction. Korra could only hope she could get it there in time.
Kai and Wei walked up to another dead end. They look at each other and gave out a sigh of frustration.
"You know, for people who had been staying here for a long time, we really don't have any clue where we're going."
"Come on, we'll go back and take the other way."
They both make a full turn but stop when they see someone blocking their path. By the looks of him, he appeared to be one huge guy. He just stands there though and the pair takes a few cautious steps forward but a sound stops them in their tracks.
The "big guy" was cracking his knuckles and his neck. Kai could feel himself gulp down a lump on his throat. He turns to see his friend being calm and neutral but the slight twitch in his eye that he saw gave him an idea that Wei's feeling uneasy as well.
"Where do you think you're going?" He asks.
"We were…" Kai pulls his collar out to let some air out. "We were just heading out."
"Yeah, you know…duty calls." Wei continues with a nervous chuckle.
They continue down towards where the guy had been standing and moved as fast as they could. When they were actually beside the guy, they hear a sudden movement and in an instant, the guy's arm swings right at them but they were able to duck out of the way in time and made a run for it.
Joe wasn't sure if Korra wanted to talk but he was appreciating the silence between them as he figures out why the door wouldn't open. He then notices something at the top of the door. He narrows his eyes and then widens in realization.
"The door's been wedge!" He turns around in triumph as he pulls it out. "I guess they wouldn't expect us to…to…Korra?"
He notices that Korra was no longer present with him. He blinks rapidly and rubs his eyes to make sure he wasn't seeing things. Or more like, not seeing things properly. He looks around and searches for his missing companion until he notices a shadow lurking in the distance.
"…Korra?"
The shadow begins to walk slowly towards him. By the time he could clearly see who this person was, he was now sure that it wasn't Korra. It wasn't even a woman and he grits his teeth as a familiar face appears in front of him. Though the face was slightly bruised and had a few scratches here and there but that didn't stop a smirk forming on his face.
"Hello, Joe."
"…Mike." Joe hisses. "Looking good, as always."
That certainly wiped the smirk off of his face and he scowls at him. Joe tried to suppress a smile that was trying it's best to form but he soon let it go when Mike spoke to him.
"Laugh all you want." Mike gives him a glare. "You won't be laughing long."
Before Joe could initiate an attack, Mike tackles him towards the door. The door instantly gives way and they came rolling in to the room, Mike pinning Joe on the ground.
Kai and Wei were running down a hallway and when they made their last turn it lead them to another dead end. Wei lets out an exasperated sigh and they were about to go back when the "big guy" was now blocking the way again. This time, it didn't look like they had any chance of escaping.
"Fight or flight?"
"Fight."
Wei charges forward and was surprisingly able to knock the giant down on to his back. He gets on top and starts throwing punches at the guy's face. One, two, three, four, five, six. He got six punches out before his opponent grabs his left arm, twists it and starts hammering punches on to Wei's shoulder.
Wei grunts in pain and loosens his hold on to the man below him. His opponent rolls him off and pins him down. Kai, however, approaches him and he gets off of Wei and was able to duck out in time from a cross thrown at him.
Wei gets up immediately and gets the giant's attention back to him. He throws a big cross right at his opponent's cheek and he stumbles back but Kai uses his weight to slam him into the wall. In doing so, the "big guy" throws a cross right back at Kai and he falls back to the ground.
Wei tries to get his companion up but the giant blocks his way and pushes him to the side. Wei uses the momentum to twirl around and give a roundhouse kick on to his opponent's face and he stumbles back but the pair wouldn't let up.
Kai throws a hard cross right at their attacker's cheek and he stumbles back. He begins to throw another but it gets caught and he holds his arm in place. The giant began to bring an elbow down on to Kai's arm and he gets a scream of pain as a reward.
The giant twists his arm more and got him into a hold. Kai tries to breathe out the pain but he doesn't know how long it was going to last. Wei, however, kicks the back of the giant's knees and he stumbles forward and let's goes of Kai's arm in the process.
Kai sees a gun on the floor, which the giant must have had but got off of him somehow, and scrambles to get it immediately. He calls out to Wei before throwing the gun to his direction.
"Wei, heads up!"
Wei turns just in time to catch the gun. He clicks it and aims it right at their opponent's head who had his hands help up in defeat.
"Asta La Vista, assbutt."
The three women were running down as fast as they could down the hallways and out from the building. They know where Amon was heading and they had to hurry before he escapes and they may never see him again.
After a few minutes, they were able to spot him running towards an open field. They picked up their speed when they realize he was heading towads a Blackbird Chopper but Kya was lagging behind due to her injury. Lin notices and slows down to help out her friend.
"There are more important things that need to be taken care of!" Kya yells.
"Nonsense." Lin gives her a small smile.
Su knew that they weren't going to make it even if the odds were on their favor but they were close enough to stop the chopper from taking off. They could at least try or regret it later. She quickly scans around in their surroundings and conveniently, she found a few weapons that would help them out.
Su throws two M16A1 at her friends who caught it easily. She begins to pick up a bow and arms herself with an arrow. They only had a few minutes or seconds to get this done right.
"How good of a shot are you?"
Su asks her companions as she aims her weapon at her target. Kya and Lin look at each other before aiming their weapons at the pilot's side.
"We'll find out soon enough."
Lin and Kya began to fire their weapons at the glass where the pilot was sitting. He was surprised by the shots fired at his direction but felt safe when he knew the glass was bullet proof. That didn't stop the women from firing though.
They completely unloaded their magazine into the glass at a certain point. A small crack was visible but it didn't look threatening. Amon was able to get on the chopper and he signals the pilot to go. The pilot starts to get his vehicle up in the air.
"Whenever you're ready, Su."
"Shut up."
In Su's point of view, it would seem that time had slow down. She was holding her breath in and steadying her aim at her target. She slowly releases small amounts of air before firing her arrow. It soars fast and true to its target.
The arrow crashes into the glass and hits the pilot square in the chest. The chopper goes out of control. It goes round and round before crashing back to the ground into a big explosion.
A/N:
Hey, how's everyone? Everything going fine in your end? I'm all good here, I have a few problems and I could use some help. If you know how to make people disappear, I would really appreciate it if you reach out to me about it. I would very much like to move a certain family into oblivion.
Anyway, this story is about to come to an end but don't worry. I'm hitting up on a new story once this one is over. Here's a preview and yes, it's KorrAsami.
Asami Sato is the top investigator in the Republic City Police Force. She has been for the past year but there's a small problem, she gets too caught up with her work. What happens when dead bodies start piling up under her watch and she doesn't know how to stop it? Is she going to drive herself off of the edge from work or will the killer do it for her?
Love it? Hate it? Let me know. It's AU. And once again, I thank everyone for following and adding this story in their favorites. I appreciate all the reviews as well. Gu3st, I actually got the names Rylai and Lina from a game called DOTA 2. And I believe you pronounce it as Rye-Lie. :P
