Becoming who we are

"Caroline. You're awake?"
She doesn't hear him. Is the casket sound proof? Can she even see him? Elijah consideres it. When her eyes widen and she looked at him in panic, he has his answer. She can definitely see him. But what's with the casket?
"I'm getting you out. Hold on." Comes his soothing reply, trying to calm her down. She doesn't. He sighs. Pointing at her, he captures her attention, and she finally stills, eyes wide.
Elijah proceeds to point at himself, and then tries to mimic a hacking motion, indicating he intends to liberate her from the casket.
She nods, slowly, eyes still wide and full of fear.
He supposes that she never expected that. Fear will do funny things to you.

"What's that noise?" Bonnie asks, sitting down on the couch of the Salvatore mansion. Elena rubs her forehead.
"Damon's throwing stuff again. He's still upset."
"Did he hit you?" Bonnie asks, lips pursed, looking at Elena's tender skin, that takes longer to heal than it should.
"He tried to stake me. It was horrifying. Stefan didn't do anything to stop him."
"Well, Caroline did sacrifice herself so that you could live a human life." Bonnie ponders, opening her tome, which contains a lot of notes on the alternate universe she set up.
"And I feel really bad for it, but you have to understand I had no idea she would have done that. If I had known…" Elena starts, tearing up at the mention of Caroline, and Bonnie can do nothing but roll her eyes.
"We discussed this. There's no way you could have stopped her. She was determined."
"But you're working on getting her out, right?"
"I'm almost done." Bonnie assures her. Because that's what she'll always says.
Yes, she got Caroline into this huge mess. Yes, that was all on her part. She created the alternate universe, so that brave, selfless Caroline didn't actually have to die. But now the prospect of bringing her back has given them all some sort of absurd hope that Bonnie could be able to accomplish a feat so impossible it gives her immense headaches.
But she smiles, telling them all she's almost got it figured out, because what else can she do? Damon is volatile and dangerous right now.
She's heard Stefan and Alaric throw around the term 'unstable'. She can't help but agree. Damon is a tortured soul, awakening from a long slumber to find out the love of his life sacrificed herself for nothing.
Had Bonnie been in his position, she would have done far worse than try and stake Elena.
But Bonnie isn't Damon. Bonnie is cool and calculating. And she's failing at keeping it cool right now. So she leaves Elena, sitting on her couch all alone. Alone with the life she made for herself by carrying on with two brothers.
It's always the same with those doppelgangers, she hears Caroline's voice whisper sometimes.
She tries contacting Caroline through the portal she arranged, but over the months, no signal has been received, and it's made her wonder whether Caroline might truly be dead.
But today.
Today she will try again, like she does every day, and today she might succeed.
Imagine her surprise, when after 4 months, she finally sees Caroline's face outside her nightmares.
