Chapter Four

Bella

She had spotted me, standing among the brush at the edge of the clearing. I had watched as her eyes trailed down my body, flickering back up to stare deep within my eyes. My beast had positively purred at her actions, contentedly lying dormant in my mind. She had smiled at me, smiled at a monster.

The thought had me sprinting away.

I was a monster. She may not have realized who, no what, I was, but the truth of the matter was the same. I was a beast who had single-handedly slaughtered thousands of innocent souls. I shouldn't be near her.

And so I had remained in the shadows, continuing to watch over her. It was the least I could do for falling for the beauty that had brought my thoughts back to me. Even more so when I came across sickening scents in the forest, none that I recognized. The three trails made my beast think of my girl's two companions, except these were unknowns, so they were a threat.

I tracked them, noting when they crossed my girl's scent. My beast snarled within me, shaking on its restraints when I finally came across what we had both been dreading.

The three trails crisscrossed each other through the trees, before making a sharp turn, following after the invisible trail of raspberries and sunshine. My beast and I were in agreement when I felt the tug on my skin. I would protect what was mine.

Alice

It had been two days since I had seen the beautiful girl who haunted my every thought. Two days. I had searched all throughout the forest the rest of Monday, but never caught a glimpse of her. I tracked her every move all of Tuesday continuing into today, at this very moment, but she always remained one step in front of me, or I guess behind me.

I still felt eyes on me wherever I went. Watching my every move, they made shivers run down my spine, knowing whose eyes they were.

I paused in my tracking, resigned in my thoughts. It was slowing sinking in that I wouldn't be able to find her again unless she wished to be found.

I shook off the haze that had settled in my mind while I had tracked, to discover that my throat was on fire and my eyes were pitch black. I normally don't go this long without hunting, but because of the werewolf last week, I missed my normal hunting time.

Sighing, I took in a deep breath, analyzing all the different scents on the air. Reminiscent of my last attempt at a hunt, I could detect many animals along with the two scents that mingled together, musky bear covered by powdered sugar. As I continued scenting, the musk seemed to grow stronger, melding with the sweetness until they were the perfect mix of strong and sweet.

I opened my eyes. What was happening to my beautiful stalker?

Before I could think on it, I heard a chuckle from behind me.

"Well, well, well, what have we here," a male voice said as I spun around.

There were three vampires, two male and one female, who had managed to sneak up on me. It seems that my focus on my stalker was not a very good thing, especially since her scent overpowers any in the area.

The blond male, the one that spoke, smirked at me.

"Hello Mary-Alice," he said. "What a coincidence that I would run into you. I didn't realize you were still alive."

I shivered. "How do you know my name?"

His companions chuckled, as if I had said a joke. He started to walk towards me, but I matched each of his steps.

He made a heartbroken expression. "You mean you don't remember me? I'm heart," he said, clutching above his heart.

I studied his face, before I pulled into a hazy memory of a man towering above me, sinking his teeth into my throat. My eyes widened as I stumbled backwards, away from the man that had killed me the first time.

He smirked when he saw my expression. "Well Mary-Alice, allow me to introduce myself and my coven." He gestured to his companions who stood submissively off to the side. "This is Laurent and Victoria. And my name is James."

James seemed to be thinking. "Now, I killed you before because I simply had to have your blood. It smelled absolutely amazing." He smiled. "So, imagine my surprise coming across the very girl I know I drained of blood 90 years later. And even though you are no longer alive, you are still captivating," he said, blatantly looking up and down my body.

I shivered in disgust, barely resisting the urge to wrap my arms across my chest, knowing it would only spur him on. I felt the familiar tug on the back of my mind as I tried to see what would happen, and my sight was sucked into the future.

'A beast plowed through James, immediately ripping his head from his shoulders. I was lying on the forest floor with my arm several feet from me, Victoria pinning me down, but she jumped away when James went down. She screamed before leaping at the Monster.'

My eyesight slowly faded back to the present, revealing that in my minds absence, James had decided to approach me. He was less than a foot from me, looking curiously into my eyes.

His closeness startled me, and without thinking I swung my foot up, hitting him square in the jaw. He flew backwards and landed several hundred yards away, creating a large crater in the ground.

My head whipped up at the sounds of snarls and growls, to be met with two very pissed off vampires, both with glowing eyes and bared fangs, crouched low to the ground. Oh shit.
