Chapter 8

Sherlock wanted to interview the suspects first thing. We started with the victims widow. We went into the study to conduct the interviews. Mrs Spencer was clearly in shock, her face was pale yet it seemed she hadn't been crying. The first thing Sherlock wanted to know about was the vault

"Did you ever tell anyone the combination to your vault, Mrs Spencer?" He asked.

"No, never," she replied. "My husband and I were the only ones who knew."

"Was there any place you had it written down, perhaps?"

"Well Johnathan was always forgetful," she replied sadly. "I'm sure he had it written down somewhere in the study."

"Is she still a suspect?" I asked when she had left.

"No, of course not," Sherlock said. "She hasn't been crying because she's in shock. If she killed her husband she would have faked crying."

As we searched the room for the paper with the combination. We interviewed the maids and butler.

none of them had much to say until we got the the second maid, Clara.

"Can you think of any reason anyone working here might want to steal from the Spencer's?" Sherlock asked her.

"No. Well actually, Maria Roberts, the gardener has a son with cancer. He doesn't have much money so she's been giving him everything, but she wouldn't kill anybody. I just know she wouldn't."

"I think I found it, Sherlock." Julie said, holding up a sheet of paper.

"Good. Get it sent to be examined," Sherlock said. "And we need Ms Roberts in here."

I scanned the study. "Julie!" I said, to get her attention "Is that blood?"

"What?" Julie said. "Yeah that looks like blood."

"I knew it!"

"A fair amount of it too," Julie said looking closer. "John, come look at this."

"That is a lot," John said. "Too much for it to be from any normal injury."

"I thought he wasn't found in here."

"no," said Sherlock. "He was found in the parlor. So why move the body?"

"That is a very good question." I said getting closer

And they didn't even clean up the blood," Julie said. "They just left it here under the desk."

"Maybe they didn't see it."

"But how could you not see the blood of the man you just stabbed to death?" John asked.

"You have a good point." I sighed.

Just then Ms Roberts walked in. "You wanted to interview me?" She asked shakily.

Sherlock led her to a chair.

"Your son has cancer?" He said

"Yes." She answered

"Would you steal to pay for treatment?"

"I- no- I would n-never- do you suspect me of murder? I would never kill for anything."

"I never said anything about murder."

"but that's what this is about, catching the person who murdered Jonathan Spencer."

"Yes, and the person who stole from him."

"But aren't they the same person?"

"Are they?"

"W-why should I know?"

Sherlock said nothing. was clearly distressed, perhaps too distressed for an innocent woman. But then again, she was an old lady being accused of theft, of course she was worried.

"You seem rather worried." He said in a less pressuring tone.

"You're accusing me of stealing from my dear friends."

"Yes I am." He said "And you're being very suspicious."

"I-" She said

A police officer walked into the room before anyone could say anything else. "We know who had the paper," he said.

Ms Roberts looked like she was about to faint

"So do I," said Sherlock. At this point Ms Roberts fell to the floor.
