Chapter 13: Sakura, and the Precious Friend
Syaoran had gotten the phone call on his way home. His father had heart attack.
Leiyun was rushed to hospital, but he was in unstable condition. Sitting in front of the doctor he felt numb as the doctor explained his father's condition.
"He has an unstable angina," the doctor explained. "You should be lucky his attack he had was not serious, but this disease can usually lead to a more serious heart attack."
Syaoran nodded and found himself asking, "Will he need a stent or will be just be treated with nitroglycerin?"
The doctor looked at him in approval. "So you are medically inclined I see. As of right now we are just going to be treating him with nitroglycerin. However, he will need to be on bed rest, and not be stressed out. I recommend that he stops work immediately."
Yelan stared at her son in admiration while Syaoran looked down at the floor with a clenched fist.
Later, the whole family gathered outside of Leiyun's room. Yelan sobbed into her handkerchief. "I can't believe he didn't tell any of us about his condition. I should have known."
"How long will he be in the hospital?" Fujitaka asked.
"He will need to be on bed rest for quite some time," Yelan hiccupped. Sakura came up and hugged her close.
She had been beyond scared when she got home only to see an ambulance in front of the house. She had ran up the drive only to see Leiyun being carted in. Before she even knew what she was doing she was dialing Syaoran and telling him to get to the hospital.
"Who's going to take over the company?" Feimei asked. She had been very quiet up to this point.
"I'll do it," Syaoran said speaking up for the first time. Everyone gasped and stared at him. Sakura looked at him shocked.
"But I thought you needed to think about it?" Yelan asked confused.
Looking down he said, "It's all my fault. Father knew about his condition, and he was trying to tell me. That's why he was pushing me to be his successor," looking at Sakura he said, "I'll save the company."
Sakura blinked back angry tears. This was all so unfair. He had just realized his dream was to become doctor, but now he had to give it all up.

Sakura stirred the pot in front of her sadly. It had been a couple of days since Leiyun had gone to the hospital. In these short few days Syaoran had decided to take a leave of absence from school, and take over his father's company officially. He had also decided to move back in order to make things easier.
Yelan was constantly at the hospital so Sakura took it upon herself to help Syaoran as much as she could. She made his meals, cleaned the house, and did his laundry for him. She also did this in part to help out Yelan and poor Feimei. She escorted Feimei to school every morning, and made sure Feimei had her meals.
The way she looked at it was the faster Syaoran could get the company stable the quicker Leiyun could get better. It had seemed that Leiyun was hiding a lot more then what they had initially thought. The company was in trouble, and was almost going into a financial crisis. It had seemed that Leiyun had been stressed out for so long because of this, but he never told anyone.
So Sakura did her best to help out anyway she could. She would never give up on Syaoran becoming a doctor. She would support him until the very end so he could go back to school for his dreams.
Sitting down the food in front of Syaoran and Feimei she proudly stated, "Tonight we have Tofu soup with a side of baked chicken."
Feimei stared down at her plate warily. The Tofu soup looked okay but the 'baked' chicken looked more like charcoaled chicken. Sipping on the soup tentatively she made a face and spat it out. "Ugh! It's way too salty."
"But I just put a pinch of salt in," Sakura whined taking a sip of her own soup only to make a ghastly expression. Her eyes widened seeing Syaoran reach for his soup bowl. "No! Syaoran-kun it's too salty!"
However, he sipped on his soup calmly, and also took a bite of chicken. Feimei watched him in shock, and Sakura's mouth almost hit the table. It tasted terrible, but he forced himself to finish it. Looking at Feimei he said, "Eat your food. Stop whining."
Both continued to stare at him in shock as Syaoran continued to eat his entire meal. She couldn't help but to think of a time back when she first moved in when she had made dinner. At the time, Syaoran had refused to eat it, and had chided her for her horrible cooking skills. Now here he was eating her food without complaint.
Feimei shook her head picking up her charcoaled chicken. "Just because you like her doesn't mean I should have to eat it-" she grumbled but stopped at getting kicked in the shin. Syaoran glared at her out of the corner of his eye.
Later Sakura washed the dishes and hummed lightly to herself. She stopped at seeing Syaoran walk in. "Oh? You're still up I thought you would be in bed," she said drying off her hands. When he didn't say anything she asked, "Would you like some water? Or coffee?"
He nodded and watched as Sakura sat about the kitchen making him coffee. He stared at her with sad amber eyes. He really didn't know why he walked into the kitchen. He tried to tell himself it wasn't because he wanted to see her, but he was starting to think he was lying to himself. He had actually been watching her for awhile by the door to the kitchen. He forgot how much he enjoyed seeing her dance around in her teddy bear apron.
Seeing his sad expression Sakura asked, "Are you really going to take over your father's company? I thought you wanted to become a doctor…."
Staring at the floor he said, "I do. And I still do," turning to her he said, "I never thought my father would get sick, but I can't run away from responsibility. I promised you I wasn't going to run away anymore remember?" he asked grinning. Sakura smiled at him. "Anyways, once he gets back to better health I'll go back to school after that. School will always be there."
Smiling at him sweetly she said, "Let me know if there is anything I can do for you okay? I promised you that I would support you 100% remember?" she said grinning.
They both smiled at each other for a moment before the timer on the coffee went off. Sakura scrambled to assemble the coffee, but stopped at feeling warm arms surround her. Stunned, her heart hammered in her chest as he whispered softly into her ear, "Thank you Sakura."
They stayed like that for awhile with Syaoran leaning on her almost for support. She couldn't see because her back was to him, but a look of longing was written on his face.
Once he was back in his room he slumped up against his door frame. Earlier that day he had met his father's advisor Wei. Wei had been surprised when Syaoran had already read through all the papers, and looked at the company's numbers from the past couple of years.
Wei confirmed his fears. "Yes we've been in trouble for awhile now. We might have to consider merging with another company. We really need financial support."
Syaoran had known that the company was in trouble financially, but he didn't realize just how desperate the situation actually was. The Li Clan was such a proud clan that if it came to asking for help Syaoran knew they had to be in trouble.

Over the next couple of weeks Syaoran worked tiredly for his father's company into the wee hours of the morning. Sakura tried her best to help him anyway she could. With Yelan being at the hospital most of the time she couldn't help but to think they were acting like newlyweds.
She would be there to send him on in the mornings, and be the first to greet him at night. However, as the days wore on Syaoran started to come home and less and less. His dinner would set untouched, and his bed would remain made.
When he did finally come home he would be so tired that he would sometimes just collapse on the couch. She would carefully cover him with a blanket.
One night as she was doing this his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. Surprised she turned around to see him staring at her tiredly through his messy bangs. "Stay," he whispered.
Nodding she sat down beside the couch on the floor, and the two were able to catch up on the events over the past couple of nights. When he was finally asleep she brushed his bangs back and whispered, "Keep fighting Syaoran-kun."

The next day Sakura gave her leave of absence to Kai-kun. "I'm sorry," she said bowing.
Kai shook his head. "No need to apologize. So his Li-san still sick?"
Sakura nodded sadly, but then put on a bright face. "But getting better every day!"
"Well both of you should take your time, and just focus on family for right now," Kai said smiling.
Sakura was about to leave when her shirt was tugged on. Turning she was surprised to see Meilin. "Do you have a moment?"
The two girls walked in silence for awhile. Finally Meilin said, "Hey I'm sorry for what happened over Christmas. It was stupid. I was just jealous."
Sakura nodded. She still wasn't for sure completely what happened, but she had forgiven Meilin long ago. Sakura smiled at her. "I know that you really love and care for him. I understand that because I love and care for him as well."
Meilin stopped shocked. "You're not angry?"
Shaking her head Sakura said, "I know you're a good person Meilin. I know you would never intentionally put me in harm's way," laughing she added. "I was the stupid one that tried to go find it in the snow anyway."
"Still I apologize," casting her eyes down Meilin asked, "So how's Leiyun?"
"He's recovering. Yelan said he should be able to come home by next month," Sakura said. She had been very happy when she heard the news. Hopefully Syaoran would be able to go back to school soon.
"Oh that's good to hear," Meilin sighed in relief. She hadn't really talked to Syaoran since Christmas. It was too painful.
"He needs you Meilin," Sakura said making Meilin stop. "You're a good friend to him. He needs all the support he can get right now. Syaoran is working very hard."
"But he has you," Meilin said more coldly then what she meant to.
"Yes but he needs you as well. I'm afraid my lunches are probably making matters worse," Sakura laughed. "I bet he would appreciate your bentos for awhile."
Meilin stared at Sakura surprised. Was this the same girl she had met a year ago? Seeing Sakura smile up at her with that sweet smile, and breeze slightly ruffle her golden hair Meilin could see what Syaoran saw in Sakura. He needed her. He needed someone like Sakura in his life.
Smiling genuinely Meilin said, "I will."
Sakura went to leave but Meilin stopped her again, "Hey! Sakura!" she turned. "Would it be okay if I considered you my friend?"
Sakura gave her a joyful smile and nodded.

Leiyun was finally allowed visitors and the doctor okayed' for the visitors to be work related as long as the visits were stress free.
Wei walked down the hall with Yelan, and Syaoran and praised the latter's hard efforts. "Syaoran has been great. He's really helped us out. It's hard to believe he's still a college student."
"My Xiao Lang is the best after all," Yelan said laughing.
Syaoran stared at the floor not saying anything. News was that his father was feeling better. Hopefully soon his father would get better, and he could return to school. Suddenly, the three stopped at hearing loud noises come from Leiyun's rom.
"What in the world? I thought we were the only visitors to day," Yelan said confused.
Opening the door they saw two men standing beside Leiyun's bed. Both wore very fine suits, and the one that was laughing loudly looked to be very rich. He had patented leather shoes, and a well tailored suit. His artificially whitened teeth flashed in the sun as he laughed with Leiyun.
"Father!" Syaoran scolded walking into the room, and standing protectively by his side. "You shouldn't be up."
Wei gasped recognizing the well dressed man. "Chairman Oizumi!" Chairman Oizumi smiled and inclined his head to the new arrivals. "Syaoran-san this is Hokueisha's Chairman Oizumi and his secretary Mr. Yokoyama."
The well dressed men bowed their heads. Syaoran remembered his manners, and bowed deeply. "Forgive me for not introducing myself sooner my name Li Syaoran."
"Li?" Chairman Oizumi asked eyes flitting between the very good looking, tall, well built young man before him, and the portly Leiyun on the bed in confusion.
"Yes this is my son Li Syaoran. He's been taking my place at the company while I've in the hospital," Leiyun explained proudly saying his son's name in the Japanese way.
"Ah," the chairman said. "I heard rumors about your son, but now I see that they are correct."
"If I may sir since we are all gathered," Mr. Yokoyama said politely "Perhaps we could discuss the plan?" Reaching for a briefcase he opened it, and withdrew some papers. Lying them down in front of Leiyun he said, "We would like to invest in your company."
"Yokoyama we are in a hospital," the chairman reprimanded. Turning to Yelan he said, "I apologize for his rudeness."
Mr. Yokoyama bowed as well. "I apologize I just thought it would be the right time because perhaps his wife, son, and Mr. Wei would like to hear about the plan as well."
"Of course I would like to hear about it now," Leiyun said sitting up straighter in bed, and reaching for the papers in front of him.
Syaoran narrowed his eyes. Quickly he walked around the bed and said, "I'm sorry to be rude, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave today."
"Xiao Lang-"Leiyun scolded. "He came all the way to see me-"he tried to say but Syaoran cut him off.
"I'm really sorry but my father needs bed rest. He is not in the condition to be working right now," seeing the fear on his father's face he added, "I would like to discuss the investment with you on behalf on my father."
Mr. Yokoyama scoffed. "You've been very rude young man-"
Syaoran squared his shoulders, and stood up to his full height. Looking down at the secretary with is cool amber eyes he said, "I am acting president right now," turning from Mr. Yokoyama Syaoran regarded the chairman. "I would like to visit your company tomorrow, and discuss it with you then. I would like it if you could please leave now. It's not good for my father's health," he said bowing deeply.
Suddenly the chairman laughed breaking the silence. He stared at Syaoran a little bit more. Even though he was young he had a good head on his shoulders. The rumor was true then not only was he a genius, but he also seemed to have good business sense as well. "I'll see you at 11 tomorrow. Yokoyama clear my schedule," he said before making his leave.
Mr. Yokoyama gaped like a fish before hurriedly rushing after his boss.
Leiyun and Wei stared at Syaoran in wonder. "The chairman never makes time for anyone."
"Sugoi Syaoran-sama," Wei breathed.

The next day Syaoran met with the Chairman as scheduled. The Chairman sighed as Syaoran talked with him. The girls of the office kept walking by the glass windows and giggling.
"So as you can see I think if you invest in our company it would make you a profit," Syaoran finished.
The Chairman nodded. Mr. Yokoyama, whom was still seething from the previous day sneered, "Well it was a nice presentation. As good as it can get from someone who has only heard about lectures in management through class."
"Actually I'm in the science department," Syaoran said wiping Mr. Yokoyama's smirk right off.
"Do you not plan on being your father's successor?" The chairman asked confused.
"I believe to be a well rounded person a person needs a broad range of knowledge," Syaoran explained. "Knowledge is key and in order to be a good leader I feel like a person needs to be knowledgeable in all aspects."
Again the chairman found himself staring at the young man before him. He was smart, good looking, business oriented, and came from a good family. It was perfect. When Syaoran had excused himself to restroom he took it upon himself to call his granddaughter. "Do you have time to see me today?" he listened in on the phone and smiled. "Very good I'll see you around 1," he hung up the phone and smiled triumphantly.
Syaoran sighed waiting for the elevator. He really didn't like Mr. Yokoyama, but he liked Chairman Oizumi. He seemed like a very smart businessman, and he really did think with his financial backing the company could get on its feet again.
He watched as the numbers lit up with the elevator coming to his floor. Soon his father would get better, and he would get to back to school. He was imagining the door in his head opening up once more just as the elevator doors opened as well. Behind the door in his head Sakura was there smiling again, and in the doors of the elevators was another girl. The girl carefully exited the elevator, but got knocked out of nowhere from the person behind her. She squealed falling forward.
With his years of training, Syaoran immediately caught her before she could hit the floor. Her heart slammed in her chest looking up at the guy before her who had caught her in a deep dip. The elevator door closed. "Are you okay?" he asked her.
The girl was very beautiful. She was a traditional Japanese beauty with pale skin, dark hair, and a heart shaped face. Her almond eyes stared up at him round. "Hai," she whispered out prettily.
Standing her up carefully Syaoran retrieved her purse that had been knocked from her hands. "Are you sure you're okay?" he asked handing her the purse.
She stared at him in awe before slowly nodding. "Please be careful," he said again before getting on the elevator.
The girl watched him go as the doors slowly closed. Who was her knight in shining armor?

Meilin cried as she hit the tennis balls. Each ball swerved hard and nailed the fence far across from her. With each new tear that slid down her cheek a new tennis ball was hit with force.
She had started to give up on Syaoran in December. All this time his words had echoed in her head. "I do feel something for her. I'm not for sure if it's love yet, but I do care for her."
When Meilin had asked to be her friend she had truly meant it. But it was harder than she thought meeting Syaoran at work. She brought him a bento, and sat in front of him as he ate it. She mused he looked so grown up in his suit and tie.
"I heard Kai-kun asked you out," he said in between bites. "Are you going to go on a date with him?"
Meilin scoffed. "With that punk? Someone will probably think we're going to rob the place."
"I think you should give him a chance."
Meilin's heart clenched. Finally she asked the question she had always been scared to ask. "Did you ever love me like I loved you?"
He stopped chewing for a moment, but then seemed to swallow and make up his mind. "I've always cared for you," he began. Meilin's heart skipped. "But always like a sister."
Her heart plummeted. So he had never loved her. Not even once. He stood to tell her goodbye, and Meilin made up her mind. "I can't give up on your Xiao Lang," she said her lip wobbling. "I've tried all these months and I can't," she said with a broken voice. Looking up at him with fiery eyes she said, "Let me kiss you once. Just one kiss."
Syaoran sighed and shook his head. "I'm sorry Meilin, but I don't want to do something like that with you."
"But you do with Sakura?" she asked in a small voice.
"Yes," he said simply making her stare at him in shock. "I've kissed Sakura."
She cried in frustration as she hit the ball again. She had been at this for 5 hours straight now. Finally her arms and legs could do no more and she collapsed. She hadn't even noticed that her pig tails had come undone.
"You've kissed her?" she had asked him.
"Yes," looking at her sincerely he said, "Meilin do you remember our date?"
How could she not? "Yes…"
"What did you feel on our date? Was it everything you ever wanted?"
She thought about it for a moment. She recalled him being a gentleman, but mostly she recalled being bored. Seeing the look on her face he added, "Meilin I don't doubt that you love me. But I think you just love me out of comfort. I'm all you've ever known. How do you know that you don't want something different?"
She cried punching the pavement ignoring the cracking sound in her knuckles. "BAKA!" she screamed. She wasn't for sure if she was calling herself that or him. Suddenly she stopped at seeing a bottle of water in front of her face. Through tear soaked lashes she looked up only to see a very good looking young guy before her.
The boy crouched down, and sat down next to her. He was in tennis clothes, but he wasn't someone she had ever seen before. He had beautiful auburn hair that was slightly wavy, and stormy, expressive, grey eyes.
"Thank you," she whispered drinking the water.
"I come here too when I'm upset," he said leaning back on his arms. "But I've found it's always good to talk to someone as well."
She looked at him doubtfully. Why would she talk to a stranger? Seeing her confused expression the boy grinned, and produced his flaming tennis racquet. Her eyes widened in shock "Kai-kun?!"
It was true it was him. It was him but without all the hair gel, hair dye, piercings and sunglasses. "The one and only," he said tipping an invisible hat.
"What happened to you?" she gasped.
He laughed. "This is what I look like on lazy days," he explained. "Sure I like to dress all crazy, but sometimes it's fun to just be normal too," looking at her seriously he asked, "So why are you so upset?"
She sighed. "I've just realized what a fool I've been."
"Is it about Syaoran-kun?" he asked shrewdly.
She looked at him surprised but nodded her head. "Yes," she said deciding to be truthful.
"If it helps that guy doesn't deserve you. You need someone that will treat you well, and love you unconditionally. You don't need anybody Meilin. Look for somebody that needs you."
Meilin blinked at the boy before her before laughing the first true laugh that she had since December. Looking at him once more she said, "Still want to go for that coffee?"
"Sure," he said happily "But not right now." Seeing her crestfallen expression he laughed. "Not with you smelling like that. Maybe after a shower," he said grinning.
Meilin slapped him on the arm, and the two bickered about who smelled more.

Syaoran was confused when his mother called him to the hospital almost directly after his meeting. "Mother what's the matter?" he asked alarmed walking up to her seeing her crying.
"Oh Xiao Lang," she sniffed. "Thank you for coming. I need you here with me."
"What's going on?" he asked again.
"We need to go talk to the doctor," she explained.
Later that same day Syaoran walked home in a cloud. His ears buzzed, and he almost felt light headed. This was it. He imagined the door in his head being closed forever. Sitting down on a swing set he ran his hands through his hair frustrated. Reaching into his bag he pulled out a copy of Harper Collin's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. He stared at the book for a moment before angrily throwing it into the trash next to him.
"Syaoran-kun?" he looked up in a fog only to see Sakura staring at him scared. How had she known where he would be? "Are you okay?" she asked approaching him.
Something had told her that she needed to be at the park that day. It was like the universe had pulled her to him in a time of need.
"My father's not doing well," he said finally. "Mother and I met with the doctor today. It seems like his condition is stable now, but they ran an extensive test on him. They found out he has a heart disease. He needs an operation."
Sakura stared at him in disbelief. "Is it a difficult operation?" She asked finally once she found her voice.
Syaoran shook his head, and ran his fingers through his hair again. "It's his heart," he said sighing. "Even if the operation goes well… he won't be returning back to work for awhile."
She let his words sink in. Not return to work for awhile? Then that meant….
"His disease is caused by stress and anxiety," Syaoran explained. "Because he's been sick for so long the company has really suffered. That's why he wanted me to take over soon," Syaoran sighed.
Sakura stared at him and willed him not to say the next words. "I'm going to take over the company. That way all the problems will be solved."
"But you want to be a doctor," she whispered tears stinging her eyes.
Putting on a brave face he said, "It was just a silly dream. I hadn't even thought about it that seriously."
Sakura shook her head. "So you're just going to give up then?"
"I have to," was all he said not looking at her directly.
All their conversations flitted through her mind:
"I sometimes wonder if you didn't come into my life would I have followed their path for me exactly? Gone to Tokyo University, still be at home, and taking over my father's company," She blinked at him. "You make me want different things for myself Sakura. I wanted to live on my own to discover what I wanted to do with my life."
"I want to be a doctor," he said again. Just saying it out loud felt good. "I'm thinking about taking the exam to switch my majors. I'm not for sure if I'm even suited for it, "he said standing making Sakura stand with him. "But it's the first job that has ever interested me."
Tears were falling freely now. "Oh Syaoran," she said staring at his sad profile. Finally she couldn't stand it anymore she rushed behind him, and threw her arms around his shoulders.
Syaoran sat there and for a moment he let himself enjoy her arms around him. Inside he was carefully packing away all his dreams, and sealing up all his emotions. He needed to be strong for his father. He needed to save his father's company. But for moment he would just let himself enjoy Sakura's arms around him.

The next morning Sakura and Syaoran stared at each other as he left for work. "Here's your bento," she said handing him his lunch box.
He seemed to want to say something to her for a moment, but at the last minute he changed his mind and left. Sakura smiled watching him leave. She finally felt like they were connected. There were plenty of times where she had needed Syaoran, but last night was the first time she truly felt he needed her.
She smiled waving, but then stopped frowning up at the sky. It had looked so blue a moment ago, but now dark grey clouds were swirling in.
Syaoran was surprised to see the Chairman waiting for him at work. "I was in the area," the chairman explained.
"Are you here by yourself?" Wei asked him.
The Chairman suddenly coughed, and fidgeted in his eat. "Actually I'm kind of here on a personal matter," looking at Syaoran he said "Syaoran would you like to have an arranged marriage meeting?"
Syaoran blinked looking at him in surprise. Wei also stared in shock.
"I'm sorry if this is not coming at the best time seeing as your father is in the hospital. However, I have a granddaughter, and she's your age and goes to a Seishin Women's college."
"That's very prestigious," Wei breathed looking at Syaoran.
Syaoran sat blankly in his eat. "So what do you think Syaoran? Will you at least meet her?" When Syaoran didn't give him an answer the Chairman laughed and stood. "You're young. Please take your time and discuss it with your parents. Just let me know your answer in the next few days." He said bowing and making his leave. "Oh," he said stopping and turning. "We'll talk about the investment afterwards."
Wei showed the Chairman to the elevator. Once there the Chairman turned to Wei and said, "Please make sure he considers this carefully."
Wei bowed deeply. "I will." Walking back into the room Wei stared the young man before him. He had known Syaoran ever since he was small. He had always worked for Leiyun, and had got the privilege to see Syaoran grow up. However, the boy standing before him did not look like a young man anymore he looked like a boy aged well past his years. "Syaoran-"he began but he was cut off.
"It will be good for the company," Syaoran said a monotone voice. "The meeting will be a great advantage for the company."
Wei stared at the boy sadly.
Back at the house Sakura stared up at the sad grey sky. Syaoran did the same looking out his office window into the grey sky.
Suddenly an uneasy feeling came over Sakura making her clutch her Starkey necklace. Looking down surprised she was shocked to see that the chain had broke.

Author's Note:
So Meilin did some big leaps in his chapter. For some reason I've had a very tough time writing her. I didn't want to make her whiney, but I also didn't want to make her an exact clone of Matsomoto Yuko. I love Meilin, and I wanted her to keep as much as her fiery personality as I could. So it was nice to finally have her recognize Sakura, and move in a more positive direction. Also now you all know why I included Kai-kun. For those of you that haven't read The New Trials of Card Captor Sakura by Wish-chan please do. Not to give spoilers but Kai and Meilin are so cannon to me now that I can't imagine her with anyone else. I tried to write a Sudo type character for her but I couldn't do it.
So lots of sadness in this chapter, but we are moving fast into the climax. These next 3 chapters are going to be crazy. Hope you're all ready!
Also P.S. for those of you that are worried I have the rest of this story typed out and ready to go. So no worries about me not finishing.
Please read and review! I really appreciate it!
