One Year's Eternity

Chapter 28

Thursday, January 16, 5:21 P.M.

The second he turned around, my face twisted into one of astonished confusion. I mean, I already knew who he was, but he wasn't wearing what he was before we got to the Temple.

Somehow, that blue light had given him a green tunic, boots, gauntlets, and a better, less beat up, version of his precious hat.

"Well, I didn't think it'd do that again," Shade called from the opposite side of the room. Link simply smiled at his brother.

Brother? I'll just say 'brother'.

Link stepped down from the pedestal, not taking his eyes off of his new weapon.

Are we really trusting him with a sword? Midna asked.

I trusted you with that Shackle, Shade said back.

Link walked out of the small room, Shade and I in tow.

"Now what?" Ruto whined.

I shot a glare at her, making her flip her silver-blonde-blue hair back in frustration. I looked back at Link, who looked at me worriedly.

How am I supposed to do this? He asked me directly.

I looked down for a second to think. He sheathed his sword onto his back.

Wait, when did he get a sheath?!

"Ms. Dragmire," I turned to the old woman, "how do we get back to the school from here?"

She raised her eyebrow at me. "I always thought that the Wisdom Bearer was supposed to be royalty…"

I didn't know how to feel: confused, insulted, angered, or intrigued. I felt my eyes widen.

"Wasn't expecting that question, were you?" Impa asked, crossing her arms.

"Harkinian is an uncommon name, that's for sure," Ms. Dragmire chuckled. "Zelda, you know how Saras stole anything he wanted?"

I nodded.

"And what was your mother's name?"

"I-" I stared at her, dumbfounded, "Her name was Zelda."

Link looked at me confused. Midna's eyes widened.

"'Every first-born princess of the Royal Family of Hyrule is to be named 'Zelda', in honor of the Princesses of Destiny'," Ms. Dragmire quoted. "Who says Saras couldn't have stolen himself a princess as his wife?"

"And those rumors from about twenty years ago," Impa stepped up, "about the eldest Royal being kidnapped and never found."

My heart rate accelerated. Link placed his left hand on my shoulder to try to calm me, his touch feeling as light as ever, even with his new gauntlets. I gently touched his with my right, a small purr next to my ear.

Impa looked at me strangely. She stepped up next to me, her towering figure forcing me to look up. "As a descendant of the Tribe of old that served the Royal Family, I say that I believe what Genin is saying." She bowed slightly, forcing herself down with a hand next to her stomach.

"You… Well, I guess that's the only thing that's made sense today," I mumbled. "Your last name is Sheikah."

"That it is," she smiled a little, if at all.

"Let's get back to the school," Ms. Dragmire walked to the huge doors on the opposite side of the sanctuary. I heard a kind of glimmer, and I saw the whiz of purple that was Vaati grow. He stood tall as he materialized, as tall as me or taller. There was a scar on his pale face.

"You're that Vaati?!" I screamed, my voice being carried by an echo.

He smirked. "I told you, I knew before you did. Old habits die hard, I guess."

I felt the tips of my long ears burn. I felt my ankle pulse from the thought.

He swirled up again into an indigo gust of wind. He flew out of the double doors, leaving no trace of his existence.

"We better leave, too," Link said from my side. We stepped down the steps in sync. "I've had enough excitement to last a lifetime."

"And in one evening," Shade said, taking his place next to Link.

"And it's not even over yet," I murmured.

"Not even close," Midna said, nudging into our line, placing herself on my left side. There was an unmistakable smirk on her face.

We stepped out into the night of Castletown, owls and bugs the only sounds besides our footsteps on the stone. We mostly took back alleys, Shade's idea, since he knew Castletown like the back of his hand. Must have been his memories.

We got to the school by around six.

Link burst into a sprint once we neared the dorms.

That little outfit a bit embarrassing? I heard Midna laugh.

Shut it, he replied. I heard Shade chuckle.

I guess it was more in style when I was Hero.

SHUT IT! Link yelled.

Ruto, Saria, Midna, Shade, and I all laughed.

I hate all of you, Link grumbled.

Aw, I 'spoke' up, but you told me that you love me!

Okay, I hate all of you and dislike Zelda.

We all laughed again. I thought I heard Impa and Ms. Dragmire chuckle a bit, too.

Link! I heard Midna sarcastically scold him. Not only are Zelda and I women, but we're Royal women! You better watch what you think.

Oh, I'm sorry, 'Princesses', but right now, you are both annoying me. You're being a royal pain in my ass.

Shade yelled at his brother. I know for a fact that neither Midna nor Zelda like being called 'Princess'. Right?

Right, Midna and I replied in unison.

I'm blocking you out, Link murmured.

I felt him building his wall, but I found one space that he left thinner than the rest.

Link? I tried to get to him.

What is it? he asked stoically.

I need to talk to you.

Why?

Just… I need someone who understands what I'm going through.

Well, then, where do we meet?

I bit my lip in thought. I'm not sure.

I felt his wall crumble a bit. Meet me in the parking lot in front of the auditorium in ten.

Got it.

I turned around completely, getting myself an odd look from Midna. I sent her a 'Just-Trust-Me' face, and she rolled her eyes and continued onto to the dorms.

.

10 minutes later…

I had quickly stopped into my room to grab a jacket before I came back. As I neared the auditorium, I saw someone else walking to the huge building in the dark. The person had a hoodie on, hands in the pockets, and was fast-walking as if they were late for something. They passed by a lamppost, so I got to see what color their hoodie was.

Green.

I started to sprint to the person, their steps slowing as they heard my feet slap down on the concrete sidewalk. They stopped at the next lamppost, leaning against the thin, strong, and cold metal.

"Which one of us is late?" he asked.

"Neither," I replied, walking up to him. I stopped in front of him, panting for air, each of my breaths a puff of cloud.

He smiled sadly at me, his mouth the only part of his face I could see. I grabbed the fabric on his head after I caught my breath and pushed it down to his neck. His eyes looked like that of a feral beast, almost wolf-like in the soft light. They shined brighter in the dark, I took.

"Why us?" I asked hopelessly.

"The Goddesses know, Zelda," he said, not moving anything but his mouth and his eyes. "All I know is that if we don't do anything about Nabu, things are going to go to absolute shit."

My teeth clenched at mention of Nabu. "Maybe he's just a minion; not the Dark King himself," I tried to reason with the obvious.

"He isn't named 'Ganondorf', so maybe."

"I believe you have dealt with him before, but I do not know what he is called. I only know that he does not share the name of past Evil Kings."

Dammit, Vaati, I cursed the Picori-Mage-student from afar. Link looked at me confused.

"Did he know…?"

"All he knows," I turned back to Link, slowly stepping closer to him, "is that this Evil King doesn't have the same name as the past Kings."

"Of course," Link stated flatly, "because the world isn't against us enough already, right?"

I huffed as I pushed some hair behind my long, pointed ear. Link pushed himself off of the pole to stand straight in front of me. I looked up to see him putting his hood back up.

"Don't worry," he said, running a strong hand down my arm, "we'll get through this."

"How can I not worry?" I asked, resting my head on his shoulder. "One of us could get hurt, or…"

"Zelda," he grabbed my shoulders and bored into my eyes, his piercing mine, "don't think that. We will get through this. Every past Hero and Princess pair has before, right?"

"Not unscathed, though," I added ruefully.

"Scratches and scars are going to happen," he said, wrapping his arms around me. "They happen to everyone."

I dug my nose into his warm shoulder. "Thanks. I needed an escape."

"I probably won't get one," he said laughing. "Beck'll probably have some broken bones if Midna has anything to say about it."

"Yeah." I rested my hands on his chest, him laying his head on mine. For a second, I felt nothing but warmth. I knew of nothing except Link's existence. Nothing else mattered, not the Triforce, not magic, not powers, not secrets, not even the Goddesses. It was just Link.

Just him. Just perfect.
