A/N: Well here is the last chapter on the vampire round up. Enjoy

Damon POV

When I awoke I noted that I was lying on the sofa downstairs in the sitting room. I looked around and spotted Stefan sitting looking lost. I immediately leapt to my feet, wobbling a little as I felt the pain in my head.

"Where is she?" I said to Stefan who snapped out of his trance to look at me.

"Damon I'm so sorry. I didn't...I didn't know he would do this. I went to father to try and convince him that maybe the vampires weren't all bad. He gave me a drink. He had put vervain in it. I should have known better. I'm so, so sorry." So it was his fault. Stefan had finally confirmed what father had suspected all along; that Elena and Katherine were vampires. I shook myself. I would deal with my anger at my brother later. I needed to find Elena and get her back.

"Stefan I don't care about that right now. Tell me, where have they taken her?" I shouted and finally he stood.

"I'm not sure but they didn't leave too long ago. We should be able to catch up to them. I promise Damon, I will help you get her back." He was looking at me pleadingly, begging for forgiveness. I merely nodded at him and followed him out of the house. Forgiveness could wait until she was safe in my arms again.

Stefan was right. It did not take long to find them. There was a horse drawn carriage being guarded by two men with guns. It seemed they had converted the police carriages into vampire transportation.

"Okay I'll go distract them and you go get her out." Stefan said quietly. I nodded and he moved out of the cover of the trees towards the men. He chatted to them for a while, I couldn't hear what was said but soon he was leading the men away. As soon as they were out of sight, I rushed out of hiding and approached the carriage. I examined the lock. Thankfully it was only a bolt lock. I opened the door quietly and peered inside. There were a number of vampires inside, looking afraid and angry. I wanted to help them, I really did but I was only looking for one vampire in particular and it wasn't long until I found her. I heard a weak voice.

"Damon?" I felt my whole body relax. I had been worried that Stefan had taken me to the wrong place. I immediately moved into the carriage, gathering her into my arms. I carried her out and lay her on the ground gently. Stefan soon returned sounding out of breath.

"I told them I saw a vampire in the woods. That should keep them away for a while. Oh my God, Elena!" he finished, finally noticing the frail looking vampire on the ground. His look of guilt intensified. Good. He should feel guilty; this was all his fault. I returned my attention to Elena. I gently removed the infernal device they placed over her mouth and then turn to the bindings on her hands. I got them undone quickly and she smiled up at me and reached up to stroke my face. I smiled down at her in response.

"It's okay. You're safe now." I told her softly. I leaned down and kissed her forehead. I had been so afraid that I would never see her again. They needed to get out of here. I helped her to her feet and she clung to me for support.

"Thank you for saving me. I love you." She murmured drowsily, the vervain obviously still affecting her.

"I told you I would never let anything happen to you. I love you too." I began leading her away from the scene. We didn't get far though. I could hear the shouts now. I turned around and could see the groups appearing out of the line of trees. My eyes darted around looking for an escape route. I would have to distract them. I turned to where Stefan was standing, not too far from me. I handed Elena over to him and he took her from me with a look of confusion. I started to try to explain but I heard someone cocking a gun. I turned in time to hear the gunshot and then I was falling to the ground.

I heard Stefan shout my name and I heard Elena make a weak cry. Everything felt strange and there was a sharp pain emerging from my chest. I felt someone touching my face and I looked up into the eyes of my brother. He looked horrified and upset. I tried to speak but nothing would come out. Soon I heard another gunshot and I blearily watched as Stefan went down. Perhaps if I was well I would have had a more emotional reaction but I didn't feel anything. All I could feel was pain and the sensation of fading. The urge to close my eyes came upon me but before I could give in, another face appeared before me. She was pale and looked so weak. There were tears in her eyes and she was saying something but I couldn't hear it. The last thing I saw was her being dragged away by a group of men. My eyes closed and my heart stopped.

A/N: Oh dear! Next chapter will be the aftermath of the vampire roundup and Stefan and Damon in transition.
