Chapter 9
Jason's P.O.V
…ooo00ooo…
Magic and wizards, Jason thought he'd treated the whole situation nicely, he wasn't exactly new to magic, it was more the wizard part of the equation that took him by surprise, of course he wouldn't admit that to anyone. By the time they'd gotten onto the Hogwarts express they could've all passed as just another group of first years, between the books their resident researcher Annabeth had went through and the time they spent just hanging out at Diagon Alley hotspots they were all pretty confident they would fit in, until they opened their mouths that was, their accents were still painfully American and made them stick out like a sore thumb.
Their trip had passed by as quietly as they could hope for, only a few people dropping by here and there looking for one thing or another and then there was the trolley lady, Leo almost burnt down the whole train when he caught sight of all the food; that was one disaster that they'd narrowly evaded. Other than that the trip was calm, it was getting on the son of Jupiter's nerves, between all the action they'd been through and his ADHD he was just about ready to jump off the train and fly all the way to Hogwarts.
That's why he was thankful when the chance for him to release all the pent up energy came in the form of Percy trying to goad him into a race as soon as they'd set foot on the boats, he also suspected the son of Poseidon was trying to distract him from the last leg of what was now a very long trip.
"Not very confident now that you're not flying now are you Grace?" by that point all fear was forgotten and all his concentration was on summoning enough wind to make them go faster without attracting too much attention. His aim was to win, and win he did, the only reason he did though was because Percy had gotten a bit too confident and was distracted by the sight of Hogwarts. Jason found the sight absolutely magnificent but decided he'd exploit the moment. He summoned just enough wind to let them be the first to set foot at the docking bay but not enough to attract any unwanted attention.
The man they knew as Hagrid led them up a series of stairs that ended with gigantic oak doors, reaching towards them he ended retracting his hands as they burst open of their own accord. Their official Hogwarts experience started in the form of a stern lady in emerald green robes and a pointy matching hat which Jason thought added so much to the strict witch persona she seemed to be emitting.
Thanking and dismissing the ground keeper the stern lady led them to another set of doors before turning around and introducing herself "I'm Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall, in a minute you will be sorted into your respective houses".
Asking them to wait, everyone erupted into groups chattering away about all the different theories they had heard or came up with of what the sorting ceremony would consist of. A voice cut through the din of the noise, looking up Jason saw that it was directed towards one of the kids who tagged along with Percy's group.
"I heard Harry Potter was coming to Hogwarts this year." Said a blond boy whose sneer seemed plastered to his face.
So THAT was the boy who could one day save the world!
Before he could get a good look and faster than the blond could get another word in, Frank jumped between them. I feral growl escaped Franks gritted teeth, it might have been scarier if Frank didn't look like his chubby old self but it was still effective, the blond stepped back with his arm half outstretched for a shake. His foot caught on his tailored robes and he started to trip but was caught by two relatively bulky kids standing behind him. Just as he was straightening up again the professor walked back in preventing any more trouble.
They filed into a single line as they followed her back through the door she'd went through earlier. Jason found himself standing with Piper looking back at him every once in a while and sounds of metal scrapping against metal came from Leo behind him as he tinkered the time away.
The kids in front of them walked into to the hall as slowly as they could, trying to postpone the moment where they would have to face which ever monster their imagination had decided they would be pitted against. If only they knew it was just a hat, they were going to help them out but they had decided as a group, as soon as they had gone back in time that they were not going to change the minor details of history, which was going to be hard because they were changing things that could have a ripple like effect just by being in the time and place they were at now.
The hall they found themselves walking into was magnificent, the ceiling was almost non-existent as it showed the sky, floating candles helped the stars and the moon aluminate the darkness of the night. Four tables stood parallel to each other and their occupants, students who openly stared at them. Each table wore their house robes and colours, but all emitted an air of anticipation as they waited for their younger peers to be sorted into their family for the next seven. Another table stood on higher ground, overlooking all the others, that was a great position for the teachers to keep the order of all the students.
As soon as they all marched in McGonagall disappeared into another door and returned almost instantly with a dusty old hat and a stool. She placed them down, took out a scroll of parchment from inside her robes but before she did much else a rip opened in the hat and it started singing.
Even if they weren't so separated it would've been easy to identify the first years just from the mystified looks that dawned their faces as the hat belted the notes of its made up rhyme.
A heartbeat after it finished thundering applause filed the hall but died down as McGonagall came up again and said:
"When I call your name sit on the stool and place the sorting hat on your head so you can be sorted."
As each students name was called a polite applause echoed through the hall, while after they were sorted a deafening sound would come from their new house.
Jason barely heard the names of his friends called as he waited for his turn.
Chase, Annabeth – Ravenclaw
Would he be sorted into the same house as his friends? as Piper?
Diangelo, Nico – Slytherin
Would he be alone in a house? Before he knew it what was happening he felt Pipers hand on his shoulder and saw that everyone was looking at him expectantly, it was his turn now. The walk to the stool was an excruciatingly slow one. As soon as the brim of the hat touched the top of his head Jason heard a voice in his head, a quick glance around the hall confirmed that it was indeed in his head. "Another one eh, you group have a dangerous task ahead of you" "How…?" Jason was flabbergasted. "I am inside your head, my job would be quite a bit harder if I couldn't at least have some insight into a person life now wouldn't it?" "I guess…" it kinda made sense. "Your group seems to have come to terms with time travel, unlike the other one, it took him months and many visits to the headmasters office." "Who are you talking about!? Another time traveler?" Was he a friend or a foe? Jason's thoughts wandered to his friends and how they might be in trouble as they spoke. "Well, that answers the house question, I think you'll fit nicely in…" "GRYFFINDOR"With that Jason was forced to push the thoughts of danger aside along with the hat as he stood up and started walking to join the table that cheered the loudest, that was bond to be Gryffindor.
As he sat down Jason tried to pay attention to his friends being sort but again he was distracted, at least this time it was by a real threat.
Jackson, Percy – Gryffindor
Was the other time traveler here for the same reason as them?
Levesque, Hazel – Slytherin
Did they know who it was?
McLean, Piper – Hufflepuff
Was the other time travelers arrival here what caused problems in the first place?
Valdez, Leo – Hufflepuff
Did the traveler know who they were?
Zhang, Frank – Hufflepuff
When everyone was sorted the attention of the students reverted to the teachers table as an aged figure rose from its midst. Introducing himself as Professor Dumbledore he gave a speech of sorts before asking them to dig in, with a wave of his hand all tables were laden with all kinds of foods and delicacies. While it wasn't like camp half-blood and New Rome's eat-what-you-wish the quality of the food was just as good if not better at points, and the diversity of the plates made sure everyone found one that they enjoyed.
Jason did his best to look as unaffected as possible. He wasn't going to hide it from the other demigods but he wasn't about to blow their cover by discussing the not so slight hiccup. He would've thought that after all the nasty surprises they'd been through he would be prepared for anything but the fates seemed to enjoy spinning their yarn in the most 'exciting' ways.
