Nat POV
"Officer, you cannot possibly believe that my boys are involved in this-"
"Please, sir! I can personally vouch for all of these boys I've been their babysitter since they were practically toddlers!" The station was a jumbled mess. There were papers on every desk, policemen pacing, and people shouting things from the door, glaring the Naked Brothers Band. In the middle of the mess, there was Jessie and my dad, loudly protesting. I narrowed my eyes.
Despite menacing threats about "getting to the bottom of the case," the police officers weren't doing much outside of the station. At least, not that I could see… I saw no witnesses being questioned, no evidence being brought in, no dogs being unleashed to track a missing girl. Weren't these the things that helped find people who were kidnapped?
"Look, let me prove to you that my sons and their friends didn't do anything. Despite any misunderstandings between them, they do love Rosalina."
"I'm sorry sir, but we'll be keeping the Naked Brothers Band here until we can get to the bottom of the case."
"No, no you won't. You can't keep anyone in prison for more than twenty-four hours without hard evidence against them, and you certainly shouldn't be treating minors this way. I am not letting you keep my sons and their friends locked up like murderers!"
"Ah, yes. Well, you see, our department has already gathered evidence. A rather large piece of evidence against them. We decided not to release the news to the public yet, but considering your familial ties, we'll be more than happy to reveal the evidence."
"You won't find anything! Absolutely nothing!"
"But Mr. Wolff, we already have. We found DNA samples belonging to Rosalina Tai on a piece of cloth used as a gag, and some on this length of rope." A menacing police officer had brought out the "evidence" and laid it on a table. I scoffed. There was no way that could connect the kidnapping to us, because we didn't do it. I narrowed my eyes and watched closer, straining to hear.
"Then why aren't you finding the owners of those objects," Jessie interjected angrily.
"Well, miss, we believe we have. This cloth is actually torn from a shirt, and in fact, it one other DNA sample on it."
"Really, well, then whose would that be?" The officer raised his eyebrows in response to my dad's question.
"Well, Mr. Wolff, it would appear that the shirt belongs to your eldest son." He raised his hand against all of the protests.
"As for the rope, well, we identified it as a piece of jump rope, and we have also found another sample of DNA besides Rosalina's." He turned toward our cell slowly. "How long ago did you misplace your jump rope, Alex Wolff?"
"This is absolutely absurd! None of this has a real basis for kidnapping! I demand to speak to a real police officer!"
"Mr. Wolff, my name is Officer Deagan, and I am fully qualified to handle such a case as this one. The investigation is under my jurisdiction, and therefore I am the most knowledgeable of any new circumstances, so I am confident I can answer any of your questions.
"Those things…they're just old things of Nat and Alex's! Do you know how many yard sales we've had? How many times their friends have nicked stuff to sell to adoring fans! To hold children at a real police station for a crime they didn't commit is ludicrous!
"Ah, of course Mr. Wolff, you have a point. These two pieces could still be considered circumstantial evidence, except for the location it was found is incredibly odd. You see, these two objects were discovered in the back of an abandoned van: Relatively old, white, large enough to carry band equipment, but too small to house more than a few members of a band at a time. Tell me, Mr. Wolff, at one point; you were also pursuing a music career alongside your sons? You and a woman, you called yourselves the what again?"
"How dare you accuse my family of such a terrible kidnapping!"
"That van is still in your possession, is it not? Are you not still paying rental fees for it?" My dad spluttered and argued.
"Mr. Wolff, you and your sons are under arrest for the kidnapping of Rosalina Tai, and the rest of the Naked Brothers Band will be marked as accomplices to this present crime. Officer Markson will read you your rights."
Rosalina POV
"Ah, excellent. You've managed to capture their father as well. This will explain the transportation of Rosalina out of town. Perfect, you've done well Markson. Tell Deagan to call me back as soon as possible. If we're to put this off on the Naked Brothers' Band, we'll need much harder evidence for their case."
Deagan…Deagan…Oh no. The policeman on the news! He's supposed to be overseeing the investigation. Of course, of course he works for him. They probably all do.
I lifted up my head and winced. I wondered how many bruises were on my body. My legs were cramped and my wrists, still red. I wiggled again, and rolled myself into a wall. The thump caused several things to fall from the shelf about me, and I closed my eyes as I heard the crash.
"Quick! You! Get the girl. She must begging for some fresh air, and aching to talk to her dear old friends. Deagan will put us in touch with them soon. I opened my eyes to see two hands reaching down and grabbing my shoulders. I tried to shake them off but they just squeezed harder.
"What's the matter girlie? You don't want to talk to any of your friends? Afraid they'll be mad? Scared that they'll be angry at little Miss Rosie for not warning them about the danger they're in. How unfortunate."
Nat POV
"You have a phone call. You can approach the door calmly, or I can come inside and escort you out by force. If any of your cellmates there form a nasty little plan in their heads…well, let's just say I have a strong reason for you to think that over." Officer Deagan revealed the gun on his hip, and the Lisa and Christa inhaled sharply.
"If you think we're letting you two be alone together then,"
"If any of you think you actually have a choice in the matter, then I suppose you have not been taught what real authority means. However, if he so wishes, Mr. Wolff can refuse the phone call."
"I'll take it instead." I shook my head and stopped my dad from standing up.
"The caller has specifically asked for Nat. Either Nat comes and the rest of you stay back, or no one takes the call. And this caller would be especially disappointed." He smirked.
"Yes. Yes I want to talk to them." Cooper grabbed my arm.
"Nat, you don't know who this is,"
"Cooper, they might be able to help us. Maybe it's some lawyer or some crazy powerful fan or someone who knows anything that can help us." I shook him off and followed Deagan into a sealed room with a phone.
I looked down at the blinking button – There was a line on hold. I looked up at the mirror. They had these all the time on crime movies, two-way mirrors. I knew the rest of those policemen were behind there.
I took a breath and picked up the line.
"Hello Mr. Wolff. I do believe I have something you seem to be missing, as of late. Why don't you say hello, dear?" On the line I could hear frenzied whispering and a scuffle, as well as a yelp. I clenched my fists and looked up again.
There was no way Deagan didn't know who this was, and I had the odd feeling that neither of them were on what I'd call the "good side" of this investigation. There was a growl and a sob and I could hear the phone being picked up again.
"Nat?" The voice froze me. I was in shock, and my body let out a thousand breaths it had been holding since the end of the concert. It was her, she was alive.
"Nat, it's me." I closed my eyes and rocked back and forth. I was glad that no one else was here, because I feel a tear run across my face.
"Oh god, Rosalina. Are you alright?"
