Nat POV
Three whole days. When we were by Rosalina's side, we were watching the waiting room's TV: We watched Matt Pinfield get arrested. We re-watched phony news reports about us, We watched as our fans slowly came back, admitting that they never really thought we were killers – It turned out Pinfield had gotten out a lot of publicity about us, and Cooper and Trina were working overtime to set everything straight. The only problem was that no one could say for sure who was lying until the one person who knew everything woke up.
And it had been three long days.
They tried to make us leave, at first. Waiting rooms weren't supposed to hold two whole bands, especially when the press was constantly trying to enter. Eventually they opened up a closed waiting room in the hospital, giving us blankets and food. The nurses there understood, and were always patting us on the back or trying to hug us.
It was more disconcerting for the doctors, because every time they left Rosalina's room, at least four of us bombarded them with questions. But each one responded with a sad frown and a glance that looked over our heads.
Except this time, the presence of the doctor had us all on alert.
"Excuse me, is Rosalina Tai's parents here?" I clenched my fists, hearing his words. But before I could react, Cati cut in swiftly.
"We tried contacting her father, but he has not responded to our calls. We can only hope that he'll see the news and come as soon as he possibly can." Dr. Pelletier's mouth formed a thin line.
"I see, well. I understand her mother has passed away; is there any other family members we can contact?"
"What's wrong? Is she awake? What happened?" We all started screaming questions, not even caring that he was trying to talk above us.
"Ms. Tai is awake. But protocol insists that I inform a family member immediately,"
"Can we see her?" I made direct eye contact with Dr. Pelletier, and the look in his eyes was filled with sorrow.
"I'm sorry, but hospital protocol says that a patient in this extreme of conditions needs an immediate family member or guardian to oversee the visitors of the patient, to ensure that the right people are taking care of her,"
"We are her family. I don't think anyone quite understands that, but it is her bands that are her family." Thomas interjected angrily, hugging a furious Lisa.
"You can't stop us."
"Please. I'm trying to protect all of you. Rosalina is tired…and she's not in any state to handle a large amount of visitors. We have multiple people trying to keep her vitals stable, and she may be awake, but she is very weak.
It is unlikely that she will have enough strength to even talk."
"Trust me sir, we know. But I wouldn't want to wake up in a room full of strangers. I'd be scared and jumpy and I know I would want anyone near me except people I can trust." Alex had stood up, and I could tell he was holding back all of his energy to keep from screaming.
"But when her dad's not around, Rosalina's family becomes her friends. We're the people who know her best, and care about her the most. Please, just let us see her awake. We need to know she'll be okay, and we have to see that with our own eyes."
The doctor sighed, and the familiar look of sympathy settled over him. I hated that look, but I would pull the sympathy card a thousand times over if that were what it took.
"Okay, but be very careful – Mr. Wolff! Please! This is still a hospital!" I was gone.
Tearing down the hallway I sprinted. Her door was only at the end of the hallway, but it felt like miles.
She's okay. She's fine. She's all right. She's awake.
I skidded to a stop, standing at the edge of the door, watching a nurse adjust the wires. There were more IV lines and wires attached to Rosalina than yesterday. I gulped.
"Excuse me? Can I see her?" The nurse turned around, arching her eyebrow, before she settled on my face. I must have looked desperate.
"Yes, of course Mr. Wolff." By now the rest of them had caught up to me, and we slowly made our way into the room. There were gasps and sighs of relief and squeals – The Star Rockers ran towards the bed, hovering, wanting to hug their band mate, but not sure where she wouldn't hurt. They settled for grabbing her hands in a mess of rings and bracelets, and tears.
The guys inched forward more slowly, unsure of whether to break up the girls' reunion, even though I knew they were desperate to talk to Rosalina. We all were. She turned and made eye contact with us, offering up an apologetic smile. She squeezed the girls' hands once more before letting go, muttering a promise.
But she raised her voice an inch, and with the quiet it rang as clear as day. She held up her arms, and I knew what she was asking. Alex was the first to comply, rushing in without a thought. His hug enveloped her tightly, around the shoulders, the only place untouched by wires or bruises.
"I missed you Rosalina."
"I missed you too Alex. I'm so sorry for everything – And I mean that. Everything that's happened this tour…I didn't mean to mess it all up. I was just trying to protect you guys."
"Yeah, but you didn't have to do this alone. Rosalina, we love you like a sister…but you don't have to protect us like were in third grade anymore. We would've helped." David and Quassim cut in exasperatedly.
"Typical Rosalina. Assuming I couldn't help fight off bad guys, when we all know I'm the most macho man here!" Thomas' weak joke made everyone groan, earning him a punch from Lisa. The only person who seemed to be smiling still was Rosalina.
"Typical Thomas," she teased. "Assuming the wrong things, as always." He opened his mouth to retort, but he was close enough to her that she could reach out to him.
"Just hug me already, dork." He complied, smiling slightly, and I knew he'd never let it slip how much Rosalina meant to him, but they both seemed to understand it themselves.
I hovered, waiting. I felt her eyes on me, and I met them uneasily. She looked at me for a moment, and then slid her eyes to Christa, and then to the empty spot on my right side.
I shook my head, and she nodded.
"Do you know where my phone is?" The unease settled again, everyone trying to decide what was best to tell her. Cati opted for the truth.
"It's probably still in the warehouse." I saw Rosalina tense, and I clenched my fists. If I ever got a hold of Matt Pinfield… She only nodded.
"Do you…um, well," Trina and Cooper stuttered uncomfortably.
"Remember?" She whispered, "I remember everything."
"Can you tell us?" A clearing of the throat behind us startled everyone. We turned, and Dr. Pelletier was standing, clipboard in hand, mouth curved in another apologetic smile.
"I'm sure whatever Ms. Tai needs to say can be said tomorrow. Her body's still recuperating, and she needs as much rest as possible before there is any long story telling going on." Especially when it may bring back bad memories for her. He didn't say that last part, but I could read what was going on in his mind.
"Of course. Thank you sir, for letting us see her. It means a lot." I waited until everyone filed out of the room, before silently asking for one more moment.
"She's very weak and tired, Mr. Wolff."
"I'm fine." A small mumble came from the bed, and it took all I had not to tackle hug her right there. She shifted her position on the bed, and tried to sit up carefully. I held my hands out, unsure where we actually stood after all this time.
"Nat, I'm sorry. For everything. I…I'm sorry." I smiled, before grabbing her hand and squeezing it gently.
"Hey, it's okay. I know you were just trying to help everyone, but Rosalina. I'm always there for you. And I've been a jerk in the past, but I will always be there for you. You can talk to me about anything."
"He said he was going to kill you, Nat. I couldn't let that happen." The worry etched lines on her forehead. She took her other hand and brushed my hair from my face.
"But, you're okay now." I smiled, chuckling.
"Yeah, and now you need to be okay, alright? You need to get better, so you can keep playing music and so," My throat tightened. Now was not the time for a conversation about us, and what we could be.
She laughed lightly. I missed that laugh so much.
"You're right. I need to get better so I can have two really important conversations. One needs to happen as soon as possible – Tomorrow." She coughed, and I tightened my grip.
"Don't push yourself too hard, you just woke up." She shook her head.
"It's fine. I need to tell everyone what happened, the entire truth, especially you and the guys. You deserve to know." I nodded. The truth and the whole story would be nice.
"And the second conversation?" She smiled, before looking directly in my eyes. She took my hand in both of hers, and held on tightly.
"Ask me when I'm back in my hotel room, the next time it's just the two of us. I nodded. I had forgotten what that phrase sounded like. When it's just the two of us.
"Promise me, Nat. The second conversation…It should've happened a long time ago."
"I agree. But you need to sleep." She nodded slowly, leaning back into her pillow.
"Goodnight Nat." I smiled, unable to resist the urge to kiss her forehead as her eyes already fluttered to sleep.
"Goodnight Rosalina. See you tomorrow."
