The Elements of Discord

Chapter 16: Welcome to the New Age

In the weeks following the defeat of the Elements of Harmony, darkness quite literally spread throughout Equestria as Dark Sky's black cloud continued to grow. News of Nightmare Moon's victory was carried on the backs of the brainwashed royal guards who quickly subjugated Canterlot, Ponyville, and Cloudsdale and were rapidly spreading throughout the rest of the kingdom. While some ponies did try to resist at first, without the radiance of Celestia and the hope of the Elements of Harmony most of the citizenry merely gave up and bowed down to their new Empress.

Which of course made Nightmare Moon very happy. In fact she was positively giddy as she strode down the hallway to attend to one of her new daily chores. Though this was one of her own choosing and one she took particular joy in performing. She would say it was the best way to start her day if the concept of "day" was still relevant. She stopped in front of the regally decorated doors and nodded to the two mind-controlled guards standing on either side to let her in. They nodded back then pushed on their respective sides to allow her access to Princess Celestia's bedroom.

When she stepped inside the spacious room the first thing she noticed were the plates of untouched food sitting on the nightstand near the bed. After a further glance around the room she spotted her sister sitting in front of a window and staring forlorn up at the blackened sky.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Nightmare Moon asked as she sat down next to her.

Celestia gave no reply nor made any indication she had heard her at all, much to the dark mare's annoyance.

"You know it's no fun to gloat if you don't react," she grumbled.

It was only then that the stripped down princess turned to glare at the twisted version of her sister with a small, satisfied smirk on her muzzle.

"Good," she spat contemptuously.

Unfortunately, Nightmare Moon merely grinned back at her.

"Ah now there's the fire I know from my dear sister," she cooed, caressing Celestia's chin with an armored hoof. "So full of passion and righteous fury. Just like the sun she controls. Or rather controlled."

Celestia snapped her head away from the other mare's touch and stepped back a bit, the wrappings holding her wings down chaffing just a bit.

"Why do you continue to torment me so Nightmare?" she demanded. "Why not just turn me into stone like you did with Twilight and her friends? Or banish me to the moon for the irony. I'm sure that's something you'd love to do!"

"First I would never allow your mangy hooves to sully the beautiful ground of my moon. Second, I haven't turned you to stone because I want you to feel the same helplessness I did when you trapped me. Betrayed. Alone. Unable to move or feel."

"But I do feel!" Celestia barked back. "I feel the pain and regret and sadness of not being able to help you." She sighed and lowered her head. "And the loss of Twilight and her friends. The only real friends I've known in a 1,000 years. Another friend lost. Another student I failed. I feel all this and more."

Nightmare Moon simply stared at her for a few seconds before she leaned forward to whisper into Celestia's right ear.

"Good," she hissed, throwing word right back at her.

The white Alicorn merely closed her eyes and let out a long, sorrowful sigh. The dark empress chuckled back at her before she started to leave the room. Just before she stepped out, however, she gave the cold, stale food another glance.

"You should eat though," she advised, looking over her shoulder. "I wanted you defeated, not dead."

Celestia's eyes popped open and she looked up just in time to see Nightmare leaving the room and the doors closing behind her. Something about the tone she just used sent a glint of hope racing through the captive princess' heart.

"Luna?" she asked softly.

( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - )

After her "chat" with Celestia, Nightmare Moon made her way towards the throne room, her throne room, to officially begin her day. There she was met by three of her "Moon Guards" as she had dubbed them. Three Pegasus ponies she had physically altered with a spell along with brainwashing them to make them her personal Royal Guard. It was an especially satisfying action as two of the three had been the ones that had made some rather...inappropriate remarks to Luna just before her return. Double Speak and Misfire were their names if she remembered correctly. The third one was just a pony hanging out with them that wanted to be part of the group for whatever reason. She believed his name was "Train" which she thought was a very odd name for parents to give to their colt but then again she was behind the times. While they weren't the best at their jobs, their incompetence did help aid in her resurrection so she had to reward them in some way for that. Mutating them into bat winged ponies with her own serpentine like eyes seemed like the best way to do that. She even changed their armor to shades of light and dark blue with a scaled fin on top in place of the usual guards' golden armor with its feather adorned helmet. She kept their blue colors intact as she felt they complimented her own coat rather well but if she were to make any more in the future she might go with a light grey. Something to resemble the lighter shades of the night as well.

"All hail Empress Nightmare Moon!" they declared in unison as she took her newly claimed throne.

"Oh I do so love hearing that," she beamed.

"It suits you well," Dark Sky smiled as she stepped up to the throne.

"Ah Sky what news do you bring of my growing empire?"

The unicorn used her magic to levitate a scroll in front of her before she spoke again.

"Well the subjugation of Ponyville continues to go well. Not surprisingly Stampede was able to get most of the townsponies under control rather quickly. And with Hammer and the contingent of guards we sent there they should have the rest under hoof in no time," she reported.

"Excellent," Nightmare Moon replied with a satisfied smile. "How about Cloudsdale?"

Dark Sky a slight sigh even as she read the report, "According to this going very well. But considering who wrote it, I'm not sure we can really believe it."

"You don't like Crimson Sky much do you?" the dark mare asked with a slightly devious smirk.

"It has nothing to do with liking her, I just don't trust her," Dark Sky clarified. "She is the Element of Treachery after all. I don't think it's wise to give her free reign over one of the more influential cities in the area."

"And who said I gave her free reign?" Nightmare quipped.

Dark Sky stared at her for a second in confusion.

"But you didn't send anypony with her," she pointed out.

"Didn't I? Why do you think I allowed her to take the Shadowbolts with her?"

"Oh," the unicorn gasped then developed a mischievous smirk of her own. "Very sneaky."

"Yes I'm rather proud of it myself," Nightmare Moon replied proudly. "So you can be reassured I am keeping quite a few eyes on her. Now is there anything else to report?"

"Well the trains are helping carry our troops all over Equestria and they're already making good headway in Manehattan and Phillydelphia. In fact there are a group of ponies running a tavern in Phillydelphia who offered to, and I'm quoting here, 'Torture the manure out of ponies' for us."

Even Nightmare Moon seemed surprised by that message.

"How...charming," she said uncertainly. "We'll...look into that one later."

"Good idea," Dark Sky said, putting the scroll away. "For now that's about it but it seems everything's going quite well."

"Excellent," the dark empresses grinned as she settled into her throne. "So nice to know the peasants know who their true ruler is now."

"There are still some pockets of resistance though," Dark Sky reminded her. "We're going to have to deal with them sooner or later."

"Yes, yes I know," she waved off. "But at the moment I want to enjoy my victory."

"Very well."

A silence enveloped the room as Nightmare Moon closed her eyes and let out a content sigh. After dreaming of this moment for far too long it seemed hardly real that she actually had overcome her sister and her beautiful night would rule from here on out. Well maybe not at the moment but once all ponies finally realized she was their rightful ruler she would part the clouds and let them bath in her marvelous moonlight. A light that would last for a thousand years, if not longer. This was her time. This was her world.

And yet, despite her victory she could feel something was...off. Not out there in the world with the few ponies still resisting her but rather in the room itself. The silence had turned from one of comfortable victory to awkward tension. She opened her eyes and glanced down at Dark Sky who was the only other pony in the room who could feel tension at the moment. While she sat diligently by the throne, the look on her face told Nightmare Moon that something was weighing heavily on her mind.

"Sky," she said softly, earning her friend's attention.

"Hm?" the unicorn replied.

"What's wrong?"

"I..." she started then sighed and lowered her head a bit. "Can I talk to you about something?"

"Of course."

"In private?" she asked, tilting her head towards the guards.

"Leave us," Nightmare Moon ordered.

"Yes Empress," they replied before walking out of the room.

Once the doors were closed, Nightmare turned back to her companion with genuine concern in her serpentine eyes. With one smooth motion she flew from the throne to land gently beside the smaller unicorn so she could look into her eyes to the best their size difference would allow.

"Now, what's the matter?" she asked gently.

Dark Sky looked deeply into her friend's eyes and for a moment seemed like she was able to speak but instead she merely sighed and turned her head away.

"No. Nevermind it's not important," she said quietly.

Nightmare Moon narrowed her eyes a bit then placed a hoof under the unicorn's chin and carefully tilted her head back up to look at her again.

"Tell me," she encouraged in soothing voice.

Again Dark Sky hesitated but after seeing the genuine concern and worry in the Alicorn's eyes she knew she couldn't draw the question out any longer.

"When you first came back, why didn't you free me as well?" she asked, ending her question with a heavy sigh as if great weight had been lifted off her back.

A weight the seemed to immediately attach itself to Nightmare Moon as she lowered her head at the question. She closed her eyes and let out her own, sorrowful sigh before she looked back at her one, true friend.

"Because I was a fool," she answered honestly. "I was so caught up in the feeling of being free and getting my revenge that it clouded my judgement."

"So you forgot about me?!" Dark Sky snapped, slapping her hoof away and taking a few steps back.

"No! Of course not!" Nightmare Moon cried out desperately. "I could never forget you! I merely had my priorities out of order."

"No kidding," she muttered as she turned around and started to walk off.

The Alicorn Empress merely sighed before she closed her eyes and hung her head in shame.

"I can understand if you're mad at me," she said weakly. "You have every right to be. And I won't stop you. But please...please don't hate me. Out of all of the ponies of Equestria, I couldn't take it if you hated me as well."

That statement made Dark Sky stop in her tracks with an audible gasp. She looked over her shoulder at her friend with a horrified expression. She then quickly spun around and ran back over to her where she wrapped her forehooves around her neck in a comforting hug.

"No," she whispered into her ear frantically. "No I may be a little mad right now but I could never hate you! You're my best friend, my only friend and I can't even imagine my life without you now."

Nightmare Moon held up a forehoof to hug her back and let out another sigh, though this was one of relief and contentment.

"Nor I you," she whispered back then pulled away just enough to look Dark Sky in the eyes. "Thank you."

Dark Sky nodded in return then stepped back to put all her hooves on the floor.

"So...now what do we do?" she asked a bit awkwardly.

"Well being that I am the exalted ruler of this land I can do whatever I please," Nightmare Moon replied in a somewhat mock, regal voice. "And I think to make up for that horrible oversight I shall do something special for you my friend." She tilted her head towards the ceiling as she rolled some ideas over in her head. After a few seconds her eyebrows arched a bit and she smiled as she looked down at Dark Sky again. "I know! I shall take you for a spa day!"

"'Spa day'?" the unicorn repeated in confusion. "What is this word 'spa'? It's like you're starting to say something and then stopping. Do you mean that 'spaghetti' stuff I've heard about? Are you taking me for a spaghetti day?"

Nightmare couldn't hurt but chuckle at her friend's confusion.

"No nothing like that," she mused, wrapping a wing around her and leading her towards the door. "It is much more enjoyable. Something Celestia showed me, I mean Luna, when she first came back. It is a most enjoyable way to relax and forget your troubles for a few hours."

"I suppose I'll take your word for it," Dark Sky replied, still a bit unsure even as she followed along with her.

"You won't have to for long," the dark mare remarked as she pulled open the doors with her magic. "Guards!"

"Yes mistress!" the three night guards immediately snapped to attention.

"Bring the chariot around!" she commanded. "My companion and I require transport to the nearest spa!"

"At once mistress!" they all saluted before flying off.

Dark Sky looked up at Nightmare Moon in confusion.

"Couldn't you just teleport us there?" she asked.

"Yes but what good is being a ruler if you can't enjoy the perks?" the empress replied with a smirk.

As they rode in the royal chariot down the dark and mostly empty streets of Canterlot, Dark Sky couldn't help but notice that those few ponies who were out would immediately run away as they passed.

"They're still afraid of us," the unicorn muttered in a somewhat disappointed voice.

"Yes, isn't it wonderful?" Nightmare Moon gloated.

"But they've always been afraid of us," Dark Sky pointed out. "How is this any different from before?"

"Because now we control their fear," she clarified. "Before their fear was based on their own ignorant superstitions. But now they know what we are capable of and what we can do to them if they dare oppose us."

"But I thought you wanted them to appreciate your beautiful night sky?"

"And they will. Once I remove the cloud cover they will revel in seeing the stars and the moon again. Then once they have accepted me as their rightful ruler I will return their precious sun to them. Then with you by my side, we shall be the beloved rulers of this land." She paused and chuckled a bit. "It's all very layered you see."

"Mmm," Dark Sky muttered, nodding absently.

"What is it?" Nightmare Moon asked in concern.

The smaller pony merely sighed and glanced up at her friend with a forlorn look in her violet eyes.

"What you said about removing the clouds. Do you think you could...?" she finished her sentence by merely nodding up to the single black cloud traveling along with them.

Nightmare Moon's expression fell to match her friend's before she extended a wing to pull her close into a comforting hug. Dark Sky was a bit surprised by the action at first, but quickly relaxed and rested her head against the other mare's shoulder.

"Yes," the Alicorn answered her question softly. "I will find away to remove that cloud from over your head. I swear you'll be able to enjoy my moon before we think about giving back these peons their sun."

"I like the sound of that," Dark Sky mumbled happily.

Nightmare Moon smiled again and pulled the unicorn even closer to further enjoy the rest of the trip to the spa.

( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - )

When they arrived at the spa they were, of course, met with a pair of trembling owners who bowed as hard as they could to their empress. Nightmare Moon cast a knowing glance to Dark Sky before she addressed them.

"You may rise peasants and serve your ruler," she declared.

"Th-thank you Empress," the sky blue earth pony whimpered as she pulled herself up on her trembling hooves.

"And thank you for blessing us with your majesty," the pale blue stallion added as he stood as well.

"The pleasure is all yours," Nightmare Moon scoffed as she walked down the single step platform, Dark Sky following close behind her. "Now, shall we begin?"

"Of-of course," the stallion said then motioned a hoof behind him. "Please walk this way."

With that, the duo was led further into the spa where they were met with a few other nervous earth ponies and unicorns. After several seconds of intense silence and awkward shuffling, one of the attendants finally worked up the courage to step forward.

"May...may I take your armor ma'am? I mean majesty?" the pink unicorn offered.

"And why would I allow you to do that?" Nightmare Moon asked, giving her a suspicious look.

"Well...it would make it easier for us to properly pamper you," she pointed out.

The dark Alicorn mused on that thought for a moment before a wide smile spread out over her muzzle.

"Very well," she relented in then used her magic to strip off her silver armor then floated it over to the waiting attendant.

The smaller unicorn gave a surprisingly thankful nod before levitating the pile of armor with her own magic then started to walk off.

"I shall have this polished and waiting for you once you have finished your treatment," she explained, in a professional and noticeably more even tone.

"Yes you do that," Nightmare Moon muttered before she turned her attention to other staff members. "Now as for the rest of you, pamper us! Pamper us as we have never been pampered before!"

"But I haven't been pampered before," Dark Sky pointed out.

"Then this is the perfect time to start," the dark mare remarked with an amused smirk.

Before she could say anything else, Dark Sky found herself swept up by the spa staff and led even deeper into the building. Soon enough both she and Nightmare Moon where neck deep in two pools of warm mud with their manes wrapped up in towels. Although it took the spa ponies quite a bit of effort to get Nightmare's ethereal hair into the towel. Once they completed that task they brought the pair two glasses of their house specialty iced tea before sneaking away to somewhere safe. Dark Sky barely noticed the glass as she was too invested in watching the mud slop off the hoof she brought up out of the bath.

"I don't get it," she commented, shaking the rest of the mud off her hoof.

"Get what?" Nightmare Moon asked absently as she levitated the glass towards her muzzle.

"How is lying in mud supposed to be a luxury? Before...well before mud was everywhere! A bath was a luxury! Now it seems to have reversed."

"Yes it is quite strange but you have to admit it is rather soothing," the Alicorn Empress said back.

"Well...yes but it's still weird," Dark Sky mumbled as she sunk into the mud a bit more and levitated her own drink to her mouth.

Her eye widened in pleasant surprise.

"The tea has gotten a lot better though! This is amazing!" she beamed.

"It's their own special blend," Nightmare Moon informed her. "Celestia once took me-I mean Luna-here soon after her 'official' return. Just as you she was confused by the whole ordeal at first but ended up enjoying herself. Especially this lovely tea here."

"I can see why," the unicorn smile before she took another sip.

She finished the drink rather quickly and set the empty glass down with a disappointed frown. She then leaned her head back on the surprisingly comfortable pillow just above the bath and let the mud sooth her troubles away. Well most of them at least.

"So what are we going to do after this?" she asked, looking at Nightmare Moon out of the corner of one eye.

"Oh I believe they wash the mud off first in a very soothing shower massage before drying us off to move onto an actual massage then hooficure and optional shampooing if you like," she listed off.

"No I meant about the rest of Equestria and the rebel factions that seem to be popping up here and there?"

"Ah matters of state, yes, yes," Nightmare Moon waved off dismissively. "We'll worry about that once we're back at the castle."

"You're being too lax about this! If we don't stamp out rebels right now then others will start to stand up to us and soon enough we'll have a coup to worry about! Plus you left Crimson Streak in charge of Cloudsdale so who knows what she's doing up there?!"

"Are you questioning me?!" the dark mare snapped, glaring angrily at her surprised friend.

"N-no, of course not," Dark Sky shrank back a bit. "It's just that we worked so hard for this and I don't want to see it taken away so suddenly."

Nightmare Moon sighed and sank into the mud again.

"I know. I'm sorry I snapped at you, I just want to be able to relax for a bit. While it is satisfying to finally have usurped my sister, I never knew taking over a country would be quite this much work," she confessed.

"It's partly my fault. If I was strong enough to cast my hypnosis spell over everypony in the land it would make this much easier," Dark Sky said with a sigh of shame.

"And the effort might kill you," Nightmare Moon reminded her with a stern and worried look. "I'd much rather deal with this stress than lose you."

"I feel the same way about you," the unicorn replied with a small smile. "Which is why I don't want to see you get hurt from being a bit careless. We still have a lot of work to do."

"Yes I know. But for now...how about we relax, eh?" she smiled.

Dark Sky rolled her eyes just a bit but her own smile widened and she nodded.

"Alright," she agreed then looked back at her glass. "You know what would help with that? More of this delicious tea."

"Then you shall have more. ATTENDANT!" she bellowed at the top of her lungs.

"Y-yes mistress?" the frightened earth pony nearly whispered.

"We demand more tea immediately!"

"Yes ma'am! Right away!"

After the attendant zipped off, Nightmare Moon smiled wickedly as she finished off her first glass of tea.

"It's good to be the Queen," she remarked to herself.

( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - )

Once they were finished with the mud baths, they were indeed led to a shower stall where they were hosed down with pulsing water that not only cleaned their coats but also worked on easing out their muscles. Although Dark Sky found the varying water pressures more nerve racking than soothing. A feeling she still had when they were moved to two flat beds and told to lay down while two other ponies poked and prodded at them. Apparently this was a "massage" and supposed to be relaxing but she just found it added to her tension.

"This is-ow-supposed to be-oh-pleasant?" she grunted in dismay.

"It would be if you would let go of your tension," the masseuse remarked.

"And am I supposed to do that while you keep poking me?" she shot back.

He sighed then studied her prone form for a moment then moved his hoof to the area just above her tail.

"How about...here?" he asked just before he pressed down on it with a small amount of pressure.

Dark Sky's eyes widened then nearly rolled back into her head as the tension she had been carrying for over 1,000 years suddenly seemed to melt out of her.

"Ooooh yeeeaaahhh..." she purred and laid her head limply on the bed.

"Hmm. And this is why I'm considered the best," the Pegasus smirked over or this partner.

The pink unicorn just rolled her eyes and continued to pad and rub Nightmare Moon's back.

"Always the show off," she muttered.

"Oh trust me I know all about that," Nightmare Moon mumbled.

The unicorn flinched back a bit from her presumed gaff.

"I-I'm sorry I didn't mean to..." she stuttered. "Please don't hurt me!"

"Hurt you?" she asked with a quirked eyebrow. "My dear girl, I assure you I was quite genuine in my comment. I do know what it's like to be outshone by certain show off ponies. So fear not, you are quite safe. Especially if you continue that lovely treatment of yours."

"Yes-yes ma'am." she nodded then went back to her ministrations.

"Talk all you want but if you do anything to this one you'll have to answer to me," Dark Sky jokingly threatened.

"While I do appreciate the save ma'am, don't say too much until you've experienced my speciality," the Pegasus masseuse quipped.

He then flew up over the bed and gently lowered himself onto her back just enough so he could kneed her with all four of his hooves at once. Dark Sky let out a delighted moan and felt like she was going to turn into a puddle under his expert touch.

"Yes this one is definitely a keeper," she cooed. "I haven't felt this good in...forever."

"Very happy to hear that ma'am. Though I am just doing my job. Which I am very, very good at," he remarked, casting another look at his co-worker and sticking his tongue out slightly.

The unicorn scrunched her nose up at him before turning back to her customer.

"Is there anything else you require ma'am?" she asked.

"Actually yes. I would love if you styled my hair!" Nightmare Moon exclaimed.

The masseuse seemed taken aback by this comment.

"Okay. Well I'm not much of a stylist but I can go bring you the best one we have!" she said before quickly running off.

Shortly afterwards she returned with another unicorn who was levitating a brush, a small tub of water and shampoo behind her. She set the latter two items down then went to work running the brush through Nightmare Moon's star field of a mane while the original unicorn went back to the massage. Of course taming the seemingly sentient hair was easier said then done as every time she tried to brush it, it would squirm out of the way. A quick wink and smile from Nightmare Moon towards Dark Sky revealed that these movements weren't as involuntary as they seemed. The silver haired unicorn suppressed a giggle then when back to enjoying her massage.

( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - ) ( - )

After another hour or so, the duo were finished with their pampering and returned to the front of the spa where the pink unicorn from before was standing waiting with Nightmare Moon's armor.

"Here you are, uh, your majesty," she greeted, levitating the now shining armor over to her.

"Thank you spa peasant," Nightmare Moon remarked then took the armor and snapped it back onto herself. "You and all your staff have pleased your Empress. And so you all shall be allowed to continue your services unimpeded."

"Very generous of you, your grace," the stallion owner said with a bow.

"Yes, I know. Now we shall be off. Ta-ta for now!" she said with a wave.

"Indeed most enjoyable for us both. I think I'll return here soon," Dark Sky noted.

"Please return anytime," the Pegasus masseuse invited with a wave of his own, earning him annoyed glares from his co-workers.

They kept themselves silent though until the duo left at which point they all let out heavy sighs of relief, some of them even falling onto the floor from exhaustion. Save of course for one particular Pegasus.

"What? I didn't think they were that bad. I mean for tyrannical despots who overthrew our beloved Princess Celestia that is," he commented.

"You're an idiot," the stallion owner grumbled.

Thankfully for their sake, the subjects of their conversation couldn't hear them on the other side of the door. They were also engrossed in their own conversation.

"Well that was nice," Nightmare Moon mused as she walked towards the waiting chariot.

"You're right. Thank you for convincing me to go," Dark Sky said.

"Of course. I wouldn't dream of going without you."

Dark Sky smiled at her before they both climbed back into the chariot. Nightmare Moon then gave the guards the signal to go and they were on their way back to the castle. They stayed quiet for most of the ride as they basked in the afterglow of their most pleasant afternoon. It didn't last much longer, however, as Nightmare Moon's "business face" soon returned.

"Do you think you are rested enough now to do a bit of traveling for me?" she asked her friend.

Dark Sky gave her an odd look but still nodded.

"Yes I believe so but why?" she asked.

"Just remember something you said back there. Something, or rather somepony, I need you to look in on for me."

"You mean...?"

The Alicorn nodded before she could finish her sentence.

"Oh then it will be my pleasure," Dark Sky replied with a wicked smiled.

To Be Continued...

Author's Notes: Well once again this chapter took much longer than I figured it would. Of course this time some of that was because of the holidays and being around family, with the drama that usually entails, along with some car problems that took up some time. Then I had a bit of writer's block that stalled things a bit. Then there was just being plain lazy!

The biggest issue that slowed down this chapter though was that it took a completely unexpected turn on me. Originally I wanted to explore some more parts of Equestria to show off the effects of Nightmare Moon and the Discord 6's take over but then the idea of Nightmare and Sky in the spa happened and I knew that was too good an idea to pass up so I had to come up with this chapter from scratch! Funny how that can happen, huh? So maybe it's not as long or in depth as I would have liked, but I do think it's a nice breather chapter that allows the villains to have some fun for a change. And get some levity in before we get back to the darker parts of this fic.

That will start happening next chapter. Whenever that will be. Got some smaller, none connected to this story fics I'd like to work on here before that one. So we shall see what happens.

Until then guys!
