Recap: Most of the Justice League and a good number of the team had been captured by the Light have they took over the world. Anyone not in prison thinks that the League abandoned them. Roy, Jade, Lian, their son Jake, Artemis, Artemis and Wally's daughter Irey, Paula, and Ollie and Dinah's daughter Anna are all hiding out in a bunker in Star City. Every hero in the world has been summoned to Central City to organize an attack. Nightwing and Zatanna's children are John and Cara, John is 9, Cara is 6 and Zatanna is pregnant with a baby named Katrina.
When the Arrow family heard about the plans for attack they made haste to get to Central City.
"Jade, you know Jake and I will only slow you down. Let us stay." Paula asked sympathetically.
"Mom, I don't want to have him out of my sight." Years of motherhood had certainly changed the once vicious member of the League of Assassins.
"Jade, maybe your mom is right. They would be safer here." Roy tried.
"I'm coming and there is nothing you can do to stop me." Lian interjected.
"You're your mother's daughter. We're not stopping you." Roy started to pack their belongings into a car that he had modified slightly to make it work better.
Artemis walked in with her rucksack. "Irey, I want you to stay here with Gran and Jake, you too Anna."
"No! If Lee gets to go we do too." Anna exclaimed.
"I heard what they said." Irey's eyes were the same bright emerald of her father and they too were shining with rebellion. "My dad is alive and if there is a chance we can get him back I will be there."
"This is our fight too, you know." Anna was blonde like both of her parents and had her father's blue eyes and aim, but the rest was all her mother. She was stubborn and quick like Dinah and had the Canary cry of her mother. She barely used it because she was too afraid to hurt someone she loved. Anna Charlotte Lance-Queen hadn't had any training to control her Meta gene since she had manifested after her parents abandoned her. She was only 7 with very few memories of her parents.
Artemis frowned. "Fine." She then turned to look at all of them. "You all know there isn't a chance in hell you're going to combat right."
There was a chorus of "no" and "but mom". One look from Jade shut them up.
So the little family packed up. {AN: Okay really stupid transition but necessary} Jade relented and they left Paula with Jake.
"I will miss you, girls." Paula said a tearful goodbye to her daughters. They looked at each other.
"If this so called rebellion doesn't work I want you to go to dad." Artemis's face was tense. It was obvious that this was hard for her. "Surrender to him. I know he still loves you. It won't be much of a life but he will keep you safe and hopefully Jakey."
"Oh he will, he owes me a lot. Say what you will about dad, he always pays his debts." Jade had her Cheshire smirk on.
"Mom, please." Artemis's eyes were filled with emotion.
Paula pursed her lips. She had worked so hard to get away from her Huntress days and now, after everything, she could be forced to give it up. But it was for her beloved grandson, she would do anything for her family. "I wonder if Lawrence would offer sanctuary to the girls as well." She said after a thought.
Artemis shook her head, "As much as I want Irey out of the line of fire it would be too risky. They will probably be with Dick's kids not to mention the twins. Their best bet would be to blend in with some of the crowds in the refugee cities." Her gray eyes turned stormy. "There are plenty of parentless children there."
Jade smirked. "Lian can hold her own out there and look after Anna and Irey." She looked at Roy who was chasing Anna and Jakey around. He caught up to them and tackle them smoothly while the kids erupted into a fit of giggles. She didn't want to lose this. It was barely a life but it was better than hers was when she was a child. At least her babies had a father who loved them deeply. Jade knew there was a very good chance neither of them would come out of this alive.
Her sister too was watching them with a bought of sadness. This was one of the reasons Jade knew she needed to fight. While she could survive with her family around her, her little sister needed this. Artemis needed to have a scrap of a chance that her daughter's father, the man she loved more than anyone else in the world would come home.
Artemis, in contrast to Nightwing, had reacted to the "death" of her boyfriend by convincing herself that he was never coming home. She couldn't give herself false hope. She had slipped into depression with only her daughter as an anchor.
"You ready to go?" Roy pulled Jade out her thoughts.
"Yeah." Her voice cracked. She barely knew Wally West but she knew how much Artemis loved him.
"Good bye baby." Jade kissed her son on the forehead.
"Where you go, mama?" Jakey asked innocently. "When you come back?"
Jade smiled. "Hopefully soon." That was all she could choke out before she passed her child off to his father.
After another round of hugs and kisses, the three young girls and three adults set off on motor bikes that they had been trying to restore for years. Irey rode behind her mother, Anna behind Roy, and Lian behind Jade.
Irey whispered in Artemis's ear, "Do you think that Donnie and Dawn and Uncle Dick and Aunt Zee will be there?" Artemis was stunned. Irey had been not even five the last time she saw any of them. And even before the Light took over, Dick and Zatanna had rarely come for a visit. Dick always said he was done with everything. Artemis was in communication with Barry and Ollie. He didn't want them to stop by while he was there and alert Batman. They had had a falling out a bit before the war. Artemis was pretty sure that Irey had never met John.
"Yeah, sweetie, I'm sure they wouldn't miss this for the world."
:::
Dick Grayson loved his kids. He really did. But with the sudden arrival of a whole lot of people plus the hyperactive imagination of a six year old with sporadic magic ability, a sneaky nine year old with quite the mind, and the twins that speak for themselves with the magnificent influence of Bart who might as well be a nine year old as well did cause a little bit of trouble. He could only imagine what would happen when Irey, Lian, and Anna got here. Although the Arrow family was still off the grid, he knew that the three of them wouldn't miss it for the world.
The one good thing about this arrangement, other than the fact that he was in charge of a large scale invasion that could potentially save the world, was that he was seeing people he hadn't seen in years. Dick hadn't expected this much response. Some civilians had even come armed with pans and pipes. Zatanna was very glad to have her friends around her for the impending birth. She was having the time of her life. Rocket and she were especially glad to see each other, because before the Reach invasion and her pregnancy with Johnny they had been the closest of all of her friends.
This all made Nightwing on the other hand happy, yet sad and nostalgic for the good old days. He and Tim had barely exchanged nods before being ushered into the tent where the rebellion had set up shop.
Among the opposition, the leaders were Nightwing, Barry, Superboy, and Miss. Martian, for their experience in planning things like this, Batgirl and Robin for their skill, and Iris for her expertise in evading the Light capture. She had spent three weeks running from a Light patrol right after the initial attacks before she found M'Gann and Connor. The twins had been only five with a large price on their heads. The Light believed that they would be powerful assets.
"Still no word from Atlantis?" Batgirl asked at their most recent meeting.
Superboy shook his head from his place studying the map on the wall. "Radio silent," he sighed, they had been at this for a few days. While they had a lot of troops, support from the Atlantians would make an astronomical difference. "As usual." The Amazonians from Wonder Women's island had disappeared as well when she left.
"How much longer are we going to wait before we march down there and kick Orin's scaling ass back into action?" Barry asked.
M'gann gave a short, bitter laugh. "Like we have the funding for that."
Barry looked down sadly. "I just can't imagine him doing something like that. Even if he was that scared Kaldur or someone would slap him back into sense."
Nightwing flinched. That was a sore spot for him. Aquaman had closed the gates of Atlantis long ago, forcing Kaldur and La'gann into hiding as well. Kaldur had left Conner and M'gann a note explaining that when he disappeared. All of Atlantis was being shut down. That was when Conner and M'gann decided to call in the cavalry, Dick and Zatanna.
"We are not going to get anywhere without some outside force's aid." Barry continued. "We need the Atlantians to come out of their shell."
"What we need is a plan of attack." Nightwing said finally.
Iris nodded, "You're right, but they're too well guarded for a straight fight. Maybe a raid on an ammunition warehouse. Start small and gather support and firepower, then work our way up."
"It would be easier with a man on the inside." Conner pointed out.
"There isn't anyone that they haven't verified as having a connection to the rebellion." Robin said.
"Aww, I feel left out." A voice said from the doorway. A snort followed quickly behind it.
Jade Harper was the source of the voice flanked by her husband and sister. She was leaning on one foot with her arms crossed cockily. Her raven black hair was as wild as ever and her green tunic was adorned as usual with her knives. She had the trademark Cheshire smirk playing lightly on her face. At first glance she looked like nothing had changed, but she shared what they all had, the look of a veteran.
Standing next to her was Roy Harper's clone. He was tall, probably over six feet. His red hair had been flattened to an extent, changed from its original spiked nature. Unlike Cheshire, he was not dressed in his traditional Red Arrow uniform, but an old leather jacket and combat pants.
The look in his eyes had softened over the years, which was odd, given that the opposite had happened to the rest of them. His worry lines had grown considerably which gave the illusion that he was far older than he actually was. Not surprising for any of them. The only thing familiar that he had retained from back when the League was at large was his bow and quiver along with the tall boots that were perfect for hiding his back up bow.
Finally, Artemis. She had changed the most. Gone was the long girlish ponytail that both Artemis and Tigress had shared. A black hood that was no doubt homage to her former mentor, the douche bag he may be, had replaced it. The hood covered her hair and had a pool of fabric meant to be pulled over her mouth and nose during stealth situations. The rest of the costume was black as well, with a Kevlar material that was most likely doubled at a jacket or a poncho. Around her waist was a collection of different smoke bombs and other gadgets she had picked up from years working with Robin and as Tigress.
Her eyes had changed as well. They were the same gray color that they had always been but they were like blank slates. While Dick could always tell what she was thinking from her eyes back when they were on the team, now they were emotionless.
She was as skinny and fit as ever but now her face was gaunt and her body had become fuller from her pregnancy. She had the slightest ghost of a smile as she surveyed the group assembled there. Her eyes flickered over each of them as she pulled back the hood showing the bright blonde hair chopped short that had lost its sheen.
"Artemis!" M'gann flew into said girl's open arms.
Artemis laughed, the mask still up but she had tendered a bit. "Hey, M'gann!" Her eyes flitted to the ring and wedding band on the Martian's finger. "You guys got married! I'm so happy for you two. How long?" She looked between Conner and M'gann, her smile fell. "I mean…I'm assuming—"
"Yes, yes, of course!" M'gann was grinning as Conner rested his hand on hers. "Nearly seven years now. Not many people knew. We were trying to keep it quiet. As well as…umm…our daughter."
The old Artemis would have squealed but she just nodded excitedly.
Conner jumped in. "Marina."
Artemis smiled. "What a beautiful name!"
"Here's a picture." M'gann was giddy on her best friend coming back into her life after all these years.
"Not to intrude on this wonderful reunion but can we get back to business?" Robin interrupted before the giggling overcame his pride.
"Who the hell put you in charge, short stuff?" Artemis ruffled his hair.
"As I was saying," Jade began with as much gusto as before. "I'm the perfect candidate for this supposed undercover op. I've had a history of off and on allegiances to different teams and I've never been loyal to the "good guys"." She really did use air quotes. "At least not on paper. I believe I was considered a docile threat in your databases, not that I have any idea what exactly that means."
"That's actually a very good idea." Barry said, he continued to speak but it was all mumbled as he got too excited and slipped into speed speak.
"Barry!" Artemis and Roy said together when he finished his high speed speech. With it obvious that they weren't going to get anywhere anytime soon, the group disbanded.
Artemis threw herself into Barry's arms. "He-hey. It's okay." He said when he noticed she was crying. "I'm here."
Over the years that Wally had been gone, before Barry's disappearance, she had gotten particularly close to the red clad speedster. He and Iris helped her through the worst years of her life. While she was pregnant they made sure she got three meals a day and still stayed active. Iris was a lifesaver with the baby advice and for a while her go to babysitter.
"I'm fine." She sniffled as she turned to Nightwing. "Hey, Dick."
"Long time." He pulled her in for a hug. Everyone might have known about Dick and Wally's friendship, but Artemis and Dick's bond was almost as strong, even more so after Wally's death. They had been there for each other. Dick was Irey's godfather and she was John's godmother.
Barry, strangely enough, was the one to usher everyone except the original members of the team present out of the tent. He asked exuberantly about Roy and Jade's children which was met with a weary sigh from the couple.
Left alone, the four superheroes, although none said it out loud, each though of their absent friends. No one blamed Kaldur for leaving, Atlantis was still his home and Orin his king.
They all blamed themselves for Wally death though, hem hem…disappearance. But of course the entire League and team had a habit of blaming themselves for the sorrows of their friends, even if they didn't have anything to about it. Damn, superhero selflessness.
"Do you remember the first mission we had together with everyone?" M'gann said.
Artemis nodded. "Roy brought it to us, right? Wow he was an asshole back then."
"You're one to talk." Dick laughed. "As I recall he wouldn't stop checking out Connor."
"Dude, that's what you remember about that?" The man in question turned bright red. "All I can remember is Wally and Artemis never stopped arguing."
"We started then and never stopped." Artemis smiled sadly as she remembered her daughter's father.
"I remember because it's seared into my brain. I was a 13 year old listening to someone flirt for the first time that wasn't Wally, and come on that wasn't really flirting. I was traumatized."
M'gann laughed fondly. "Wally came in decked out in beach clothes and tripped right in front of Batman."
Artemis giggled. "Not the greatest first impression."
"You know, I figured out that you weren't Green Arrow's niece pretty quickly." Dick said cockily.
"Sure you did." She raised an eyebrow.
"But the first time we really worked as a team was in Byalia." Connor pointed out.
M'gann groaned. "Ugh, hardly. That didn't end well for me in the teamwork column."
Dick suddenly doubled over in laughter. "Ninja dad, ninja boyfriend…rival ninja clan." He choked out, pointing at Artemis.
For a moment, if they squinted, nothing had changed. They old friends were teenagers again, giggling and complaining about their last mission.
"How do you remember that?" She said incredulously.
"Everything makes so much sense now." Connor frowned. "How did we not figure that out then?"
"We were idiot teenagers, all trying to be the leader, all trying to prove ourselves to the League and the rest of the team. I don't think we were really looking too deeply into each other's souls. We were all too invested in our own needs. Come on all of us had secrets." M'gann pointed out.
"Except Wally, you could read him like an open book and that was it." Artemis remembered. "He wore his heart on his sleeve."
Dick glanced at her. "We will find him, Artemis."
She huffed. "I don't doubt that. But it has been ten years, and if it happened the same as Bart and Barry he hasn't aged a day. We've changed, he hasn't."
"I don't really think that's how it works." Connor said.
M'gann nodded. "Physically they're still the same, but mentally he aged those ten years there. Even if it wasn't conscious he still knew on some level time was passing." She placed a hand on her long lost friend's shoulder. "And Artemis, he's Wally and you're you. If you're worried that the spark won't be there anymore, you're kidding yourself."
"Yeah." Dick added. "The two of you have liked each from the first time you met. When he literally fell for you."
Artemis rolled her eyes.
"And Irey." He continued. "She's his kid, and even at the end he still acted like a ten year old sometimes, so don't worry, they'll bond."
With a glance at her friends she nodded solemnly. "I know, but we still have to get him out."
Dick turned with a smirk like his Robin grin. "I had a thought."
Why hello, long time no see. I have been working on this off and on for sooooooo long and I am sorry for you having to wait. I hope the recap helped. Hopefully I can get the the next chapter done quickly. It was fun focusing on the original team and them reminiscing about the past. I hope that wasn't too out of character. Thank you for reading this if you did. Please review, constructive criticism welcome and encouraged, but be kind.
